1. Loss-induced performance limits of all-dielectric metasurfaces for terahertz sensing

Abstract

Metasurfaces providing resonances arising from quasi-bound states in the continuum have been proposed as sensors in the THz band due to the existence of strong resonances characterized by high quality factors. Controlling geometrical parameters, the quality factor can be adjusted and, theoretically, designed at will. However, losses in materials critically bound the metasurface performance and limit the quality factor of the resonances. For this reason, all-dielectric metasurfaces have been proposed as an alternative to metal-dielectric structures to reduce losses and achieve extreme functionalities. When implemented by low-loss materials, these structures are usually considered lossless and proposed as ultrasensitive sensors in the THz band. In this paper, we examine the effect of losses in all-dielectric metasurfaces considering realistic materials and study the limitations in the quality factor. In addition, we compare the performance of these structures as sensors with a nanostructure supporting extraordinary optical transmission. Our results show that material loss, even in low-loss materials, severely limits the sensing performance in all-dielectric metasurfaces, and that their performance can be surpassed by structures supporting extraordinary optical transmission., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Location-specific patterns of regulated and non-regulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were detected in tap water samples of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. However, it remains unclear if the detected DBPs together with undetected DPBs and organic micropollutants can lead to mixture effects in drinking water.To evaluate the neurotoxicity, oxidative stress response and cytotoxicity of 42 tap water samples, 6 treated with activated carbon filters, 5 with reverse osmosis and 9 bottled waters. To compare the measured effects of the extracts with the mixture effects predicted from the detected concentrations and the relative effect potencies of the detected DBPs using the mixture model of concentration addition.Mixtures of organic chemicals in water samples were enriched by solid phase extraction and tested for cytotoxicity and neurite outgrowth inhibition in the neuronal cell line SH-SY5Y and for cytotoxicity and oxidative stress response in the AREc32 assay.Unenriched water did not trigger neurotoxicity or cytotoxicity. After up to 500-fold enrichment, few extracts showed cytotoxicity. Disinfected water showed low neurotoxicity at 20- to 300-fold enrichment and oxidative stress response at 8- to 140-fold enrichment. Non-regulated non-volatile DBPs, particularly (brominated) haloacetonitriles dominated the predicted mixture effects of the detected chemicals and predicted effects agreed with the measured effects. By hierarchical clustering we identified strong geographical patterns in the types of DPBs and their association with effects. 7. VETTONIA PROJECT: A VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT FOR THE EDUCATIONAL DISSEMINATION OF THE IRON AGE

Abstract

The VETTONIA project aims to disseminate the rich heritage from the Iron Age of the western Iberian Peninsula and the archaeological investigations carried out on this topic in recent years. The project utilizes new technologies such as virtual tours, 3D models, and impressions to create interactive and stimulating ways to access the results of the most recent archaeological research. Using these resources, lectures and seminars are being given in various forums with diverse types of audiences to present the virtual tours and the rest of the dissemination initiatives. In addition, the project presents its different initiatives during the annual archaeological interventions developed in the oppidum of Ulaca (Solosancho, Ávila, Spain), with good reception by the attending public. The VETTONIA project represents a pioneering dissemination experience that takes advantage of the educational opportunities offered by new technologies. In the future, tools such as virtual tours to archaeological sites may prove essential in classroom teaching at different levels and could promote sustainable tourism in fragile natural environments such as those that constitute the major settlements of the Late Iron Age (ca. 400–50 BC).
