This book reports the proceedings of the International Congress on the Education of Teachers of Physics in Secondary School, held in Egar, Hungary, during September, 1970. It reviews the recruitment and education of prospective physics teachers in secondary schools, considers the solutions found by some countries, and attempts to aid others in solving the problems of their local situations. The 151 participants from 28 countries represented many different educational systems. The conference's location made possible the attendance of teachers from the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Africa, the United States, and the United Arab Republic, in addition to a large group from the host country. In presenting the material, the editors have attempted to retain the conversational tone--the "free flow of information"--of the conference. (Author/CP)

In May, 1970, a group of educators, scientists, industrial and government representatives, and scientific manpower specialists met at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to discuss the current employment situation for scientists and engineers, and to assess its future implications, particularly its effect on graduate education. This book is a report on the papers presented and the accompanying discussions at that conference. Chapters are included on manpower projections, national planning, research and university finances, getting information about the job market to students, and finally the implications for graduate education. A list of selected references is appended. The conclusion of the authors is that there is an urgency for manpower planning on a national scale and a necessity for universities to restructure their graduate programs toward a much greater sensitivity to society's utilization of the products of their educational programs. Proceedings of the 1971 Career Seminar for M.I.T. Alumni are presented in this volume for the purpose of providing information about changes in career orientation in the engineering, scientific, and managerial fields. The material is given in the style of discussions between speakers and audience. The headings are: Opening Remarks; The Effect of Changing Federal Spending on Employment Opportunities; Forecast of Overall Needs in the Coming Decade; Changing Careers in Electronics, Aerospace, and Reprography; Career Opportunities in Computers and Information Processing; Career Opportunities in the Medical Fields; Career Opportunities in Ocean Engineering and Electric Power Engineering; Career Opportunities in Finance, Consumer Goods, and Housing; and Changing Careers. Emphases are placed on long-range personal career planning and training rather than on immediate job placement. Personal adjustment problems of shifting careers are also dealt with. The volume indicates that new opportunities appear for engineers and scientists in such fields as environmental protection, urban affairs, housing, education, health care, and ocean engineering. Included are illustrations of recent employment trends and a list of invited speakers. (CC)
