Pygmaeorchis Brade (1939: 42) is a rare genus endemic to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The two known species are exclusively found in the montane areas of the Minas Gerais (MG) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ) states (Withner 1990, van den Berg 2006). The first species to be recognized, Pygmaeorchis brasiliensis Brade (1939: 43), was described on the basis of collections made in the rainforests at Serra dos Órgãos and Itatiaia (RJ). While the second, P. seidelii Toscano de Brito & Moutinho Neto (1981: 194), was found as an epiphyte on Velloziaceae in Ouro Preto (MG) (Fig. 1).

Mapping diversity patterns is important to clarify its causes and is essential information for conservation policies. We map the distribution of vascular epiphytes from the Southern block of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (SBAF) to understand the main factors responsible for the richness and species turnover, as well as to generate information for the conservation of this functional group. We gathered a data set of vascular epiphytes, mapping the richness and weighted endemism using cells of 0.5° × 0.5°, and performed two Generalized Dissimilarity Models (GDM) using a filter of 18 and 54 species in cells of 5 km × 5 km to evaluate the species turnover and correlation with the climatic and topographic factors. We found four sites presenting both a high richness and endemism. A gradient of richness and species turnover between the coastal and inland regions was confirmed, as well as between the lowlands and the mountainous regions. The main predictors obtained from GDM were geographic distance, cloud cover, and temperature seasonality. The topographic heterogeneity and the resulting climate changes are responsible to enhance the richness and species turnover of vascular epiphytes in the SBAF. It is important to conserve the coastal areas and the mountainous gradients due to the high richness and strong species turnover, but also the inland areas since their composition is quite distinct from previous environments.

Urbanization is a disturbance process that can select species and result in biodiversity homogenization. Despite this, urban green areas shelter nature and are also important to human welfare. Epiphytes are an important functional group present in such areas, that are rarely studied. We evaluated the vascular epiphytic component in 26 urban green areas in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and tested hypotheses related to the anthropogenic disturbances: 1) the community of epiphytes in urban green areas presents low richness and diversity of species; 2) there is low beta diversity due to flora homogenization represented by a reduced set of more tolerant species to disturbance. A total of 2288 trees (1563 representing phorophytes) and 110 epiphytic species were sampled. Six species were dominant, resulting in low diversity values, but some green areas had relatively high richness. The similarity found between the majority of the sampled areas suggests that epiphytic flora is subject to homogenization due to environmental filters. We found a high richness of species without adaptations to the epiphytic lifeform (accidental epiphytes) (42% of total sampled). Some results suggest that more comprehensive ecological and/or floristic studies about the epiphytes in the urban environment are necessary, such as Orchidaceae as the second richest family (since it is often poor in urban areas). More information about the species distribution patterns are necessary, both regarding the anthropized environments and the relationships with exotic or native phorophytes, as well as to enhance the knowledge of the ecological functions played by the epiphytes in these places.

Epiphytes enrich the vegetation cover and provide relevant ecosystem services, which are very important in the urban environment for mitigating air pollution and effects such as heat islands. The majority of tree species used in the urban aforestation are exotic, and their capacity to provide a substratum for epiphytes is not thoroughly exploited. We tested an eventual preference of vascular epiphytes for exotic or native phorophytes in an urban area inside the Atlantic forest domain, evaluating the structure and composition of the studied community in four tree species. There was no preference for native or exotic trees, and the community showed a generalistic pattern in the choice of phorophytes. We hypothesized about other features which could be responsible for the distribution of epiphytes in the urban environment. This study showed that both exotic and native phorophytes can act as satisfactory substratum for the urban vascular epiphytes.

Epiphytes are an important component of the diversity of tropical forests, and they also have several ecological functions. Vegetation heterogeneity is one of the features responsible for the high biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest, especially in the domain’s seasonal semideciduous forest (SSF). This biodiversity presents as high endemism and species richness. Owing to the seasonal nature of SSF, organisms that require high humidity (e.g. epiphytes) would be expected to show low species richness in these forests. The aims of this study were to conduct a survey of the vascular epiphytes in remnants of montane SSF in the Serra do Ibitipoca, Brazil, and to evaluate the importance of habitat heterogeneity for the richness and composition of species in these areas. We also evaluated whether the intrinsic characteristics of the SSF phytophysiognomy and fragmentation could result in low species richness and a high number of accidental epiphyte species. The study was conducted in the course of 18 expeditions undertaken between September 2013 and December 2016, covering five fragments of montane SSF (totalling 23.6 ha). We recorded 96 species (only one of which is an accidental epiphyte), distributed across 41 genera and 10 families. This is the highest epiphytic species richness recorded in Brazilian SSF to date. The results refuted the initial hypothesis and reinforce the importance to the epiphytic community of conservation of fragments with different structures.

Cerrado sensu stricto (a physiognomy of the Cerrado domain, the Brazilian savanna) is subject to the annual occurrence of fire. Data on the epiphytic community in this physiognomy is scarce, as is evaluation of the influence of fire on its structure and composition. The aim of this study was to describe the structure of the vascular epiphyte community and its relationships with phorophytes in the Cerrado domain, Southeast Region of Brazil, after the passage of fire. We found the greatest abundance of epiphytes in the upper strata (65% of the individuals occurring above 3 m in height) and the dominance of three generalist species (Tillandsia streptocarpa, T. recurvata and Epiphyllum phyllanthus), suggesting that fire has an influence on the structure and composition of the epiphytic community.

Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the plant richness, protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of Parque Nacional do Caparao (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website Catalogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservacao do Brasil. Here, we provide and discuss additional information about plant species richness, endemism and conservation in the PNC that could not be included in the List. We documented 1,791 species of land plants as occurring in PNC, of which 63 are cited as threatened (CR, EN or VU) by the Brazilian National Red List, seven as data deficient (DD) and five as priorities for conservation. Fifity-one species were possible new ocurrences for ES and MG states. New information Parque Nacional do Caparao houses 8% of the land plant species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, including 6% of its angiosperms, 31% of its lycophytes and ferns and 14% of its avascular plants. Twelve percent of the threatened species listed for the State of Espirito Santo and 7% listed for the State of Minas Gerais are also protected by PNC. Surprisingly, 79% of the collections analysed here were carried out in Minas Gerais, which represents just 21% of the total extension of the Park. The compiled data uncover a huge botanical collection gap in this federally-protected area. Part of this biodiversity is within protected areas. The development of online databases in the last years greatly improved the available biodiversity data. However, the existing databases do not provide information about the protected areas in which individual plant species occur. The lack of such information is a crucial gap for conservation actions. This study aimed to show how the information captured from online databases, cleaned by a protocol and verified by taxonomists allowed us to obtain a comprehensive list of the vascular plant species from the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, the first national park founded in Brazil. All existing records in the online database JABOT (15,100 vouchers) were downloaded, resulting in 11,783 vouchers identified at the species level. Overall, we documented 2,316 species belonging to 176 families and 837 genera of vascular plants in the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia. Considering the whole vascular flora, 2,238 species are native and 78 are non-native. New information The Parque Nacional do Itatiaia houses 13% of the angiosperm and 37% of the fern species known from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Amongst these species, 82 have been cited as threatened, following IUCN categories (CR, EN or VU), seven are data deficient (DD) and 15 have been classified as a conservation priority, because they are only known from a single specimen collected before 1969. This study aimed to characterize the floristic composition and community structure of vascular epiphytes in 13 green areas of Juiz de Fora, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The calculated parameters were relative and absolute frequencies, Shannon diversity (H') and Pielou evenness (J) indices. 56 species belonging to 22 families were recorded, with the richest species being Bromeliaceae (eight spp.). Tillandsia tricholepis, T. recurvata, Microgramma squamulosa, and Rhipsalis lindbergiana were dominant (comprising 79.5% of relative frequency). Most species were accidental epiphytes (26 spp.), probably due to an effect of the disturbed environment. The richest and most diverse area was the Parque Halfeld (26 species and H’=2.2), which is also the oldest sampled area. There was a higher concentration of epiphytes in the tree crowns, possibly representing a response to anthropic actions. The results highlighted the importance of thorough studies to achieve a better understanding of this ecologically relevant synusia in such disturbed environments.

Biological communities vary in composition and structure according to changes in the environment, such as in mountainous areas where temperature and moisture change with elevation, leading to gradual changes in vegetation. The altitudinal gradient is considered mirrors of the latitudinal gradient, although the richness peak can occur in the middle of the gradient, due to the greater total availability of moisture and/or due to the mid-domain effect. We aimed to test whether there was an intermediary peak in the richness of vascular epiphytes in two environmental gradients represented by elevation (around 1200–1700 m.s.m.) and by three subphysiognomies of cloud dwarf-forest in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. For this purpose, 24 plots of 10 × 20 m were established and divided into eight sets in each subphysiognomy, along the altitudinal gradient. The community structure was analyzed by calculating the Shannon diversity index (H′), the Pielou uniformity index (J), and taxonomic diversity indices (Δ+ and Λ+). In total, 568 phorophytes were sampled, resulting in 3771 occurrences of epiphytes, distributed in 146 species. The diversity was different between the physiognomies of dwarf-forest and along the elevation gradient, and was specifically greater with higher elevation. The value of Δ+ was lower than expected in one plot, and represented a potential human impact. The obtained results highlight the diversity of this region and the important contribution of the epiphytes, as well as the sensitivity of epiphytic communities to the different vegetation physiognomies and the climatic variations caused by the elevation.

O Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca (PEIB) está localizado a sudeste na zona da mata mineira, nos municípios de Bias Fortes, Santa Rita de Ibitipoca e Lima Duarte. Destaca-se por apresentar um mosaico de vegetação com o campo rupestre como fisionomia principal. É um dos parques mais visitados do país e sofre, por isso, uma intensa ação antrópica. Foram encontradas na área 23 espécies de Laeliinae e uma de Ponerinae (Isochilus linearis (Jacq.) R.Br.). O gênero Epidendrum é o mais rico em espécies (11 spp.), seguido por Prosthechea (3 spp.), Cattleya, Hoffmanseggella e Isabelia (2 spp. cada), Encyclia, Hadrolaelia, Isochilus e Scaphyglottis (1 sp. cada). Entre os estudos realizados com as duas subtribos em Minas Gerais, a Serra Negra e a Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural do Caraça são as localidades que apresentam o número de espécies similar ao PEIB, embora ambas com maior extensão. Dentre as espécies listadas, seis encontram-se enquadradas em alguma categoria de ameaça de extinção em Minas Gerais: Cattleya bicolor, C. loddigesii, Hadrolaelia coccinea, Hoffmannseggella caulescens, H. crispata e Isabelia violacea. No Livro Vermelho da Flora do Brasil estão citadas Hoffmannseggella caulescens e Isabelia virginalis. Foi encontrado um novo registro para o PEIB, Epidendrum aff. filicaule na borda da nanofloresta nebular. São apresentadas chave de identificação, descrições, ilustrações e comentários sobre forma de vida e particularidades morfológicas, distribuição geográfica e habitat.

This study aims to analyse the available distributional data about epiphytic Angiosperms of the Brazilian Atlantic forest (BAF) in order to define geographic distribution patterns, areas of higher species richness and endemism, and locate knowledge gaps regarding the epiphytic flora. Thus, we seek to enhance the knowledge of the biogeography of these species and highlight priority areas for their conservation. Distribution data from literature and collections housed in 51 herbaria were compiled and submitted to analyses of richness (species count per distribution grid), similarity and parsimony analysis of endemicity. The regions of higher richness and endemism, chiefly in Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo, overlap with those found for trees and animal groups, while the location of some areas of endemism coincide with the supposed existence of Pleistocene forest refuges in Brazil’s Northeastern and Southeastern regions. The Doce River seems to be responsible for the division of the Angiosperm epiphytic flora into north and south sectors of the BAF. In addition, the existence of a discontinuity named here as ‘Falha de Conde’ (Conde’s Gap) situated in the northern corner of the State of Bahia was highlighted. Such gap divides the north sector of the BAF into two segments. It was also found that the hydrographic basins influence the delimitation of those areas. Subsampling of parts of the range leads to information gaps that need to be addressed by further data collection to ensure an improved understanding of the biogeographic relation between some of the regions, and also to fully clarify their delimitation.

Considerando a importância ecológica das epífitas vasculares e a escassez de estudos em áreas verdes urbanas, objetivou-se avaliar a flora epífita através do estudo da composição florística e sua estratificação vertical na praça Barão de Ayuruoca, no município de Mar de Espanha, Minas Gerais. Os parâmetros calculados foram frequências relativa e absoluta, índice de diversidade de Shannon (H’) e uniformidade de Pielou (J). Foram registradas 49 espécies distribuídas em 17 famílias nas 229 árvores amostradas. As famílias mais ricas encontradas foram Bromeliaceae (nove espécies), representando 52% das ocorrências e Polypodiaceae (sete espécies) e 33% das ocorrências. As espécies mais frequentes foram Tillandsia recurvata e T. tricholepis (Bromeliaceae) encontradas em 186 e 182 forófitos, respectivamente e Pleopeltis pleopeltifolia (Polypodiaceae) em 144. A maioria das espécies se enquadrou na categoria epífita acidental (18 espécies) e a maioria das ocorrências foi na copa das árvores. Desse modo, os resultados reforçam a capacidade de algumas espécies de Bromeliaceae e Polypodiaceae ocorrerem em ambiente com intervenção humana, além da provável interferência da perturbação antrópica nas categorias ecológicas (onde se destacam as espécies acidentais) e estratificação (com maior ocorrência na copa das árvores).

The diversity of montane environments is dictated by a variety of environmental conditions. Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca is located in the Serra da Mantiqueira, between ~1,000-1,800 m, and harbors approximately 300 ha of cloud forests. The composition of vascular epiphytes was determined by analyzing data from expeditions conducted between July 2014 and July 2015, and specimens deposited at herbaria. The 224 species were distributed into 82 genera of which Pleurothallis s.l. was the richest (13 spp.) and 23 families of which Orchidaceae was the richest (87 spp.). This richness corresponds to approximately 9.5% of the vascular epiphytic flora of the Atlantic Forest concentrated in an area that comprises 0.00085% of this phytogeographic domain, which represents one of the largest diversities ever sampled in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This fact is more relevant given that 13 species are threatened at the country level and 23 at the state level. Resumo A diversidade dos ambientes montanos é condicionada por inúmeras variáveis ambientais. O Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca está localizado na Serra da Mantiqueira, entre ~1.000-1.800 m, e abriga cerca de 300 ha de florestas nebulares. A composição de epífitas vasculares foi determinada pela análise dos dados de expedições, realizadas entre julho de 2014 e julho de 2015, e espécimes depositados em herbários. Foram registradas 224 espécies distribuídas em 82 gêneros dos quais Pleurothallis s.l. foi o mais rico (13 spp.) e 23 famílias das quais Orchidaceae foi a mais rica (87 spp.). Esta riqueza corresponde a aproximadamente 9,5% da flora de epífitas vasculares da Floresta Atlântica concentrados em uma área que compreende 0,00085% deste domínio fitogeográfico, representando uma das maiores diversidades já amostradas na Floresta Atlântica brasileira. Este fato é ainda mais relevante tendo em conta que 13 espécies estão ameaçadas a nível nacional e 23 em nível estadual.

Montane environments create unique conditions that favour the development of remarkably rich and endemic biotas. The Serra da Mantiqueira is an important Brazilian mountain range and is recognised globally for certain groups of living organisms, whereas gaps in knowledge exist for other groups, such as epiphytes, which have been poorly studied in the region. The Serra da Mantiqueira contains rare fragments of a vegetation formation, the mixed ombrophilous forest (MOF), which is typical of the Southern Region of Brazil and is very threatened. The present study aimed to analyse the epiphytic communities occurring on individuals of Podocarpus lambertii Klotzsch ex Endl. (Podocarpaceae) in two biotopes: natural patches and continuous alluvial forest. We sampled 60 phorophytes, equally divided between the sites, and established five strata according to stem ramification. This phorophyte species is ecologically relevant, since it harbours 92 species and 19 families, and a single individual may support up to 30 % of the total richness of the studied community. The Shannon diversity index was 3.86, which is comparable to that found in other studies dealing with several phorophyte species and is the highest found to date for the MOF. The biotopes and strata did not show significant differences in the calculated diversity indices, except in richness (80 species in the alluvial forest and 60 in the patches). The most representative ecological categories were characteristic holoepiphytes (73 species) and accidental holoepiphytes (nine species). The present study shows the importance that a single species can have in an ecosystem and contributes to our knowledge concerning epiphytic synusia in mountainous environments.

(Diversity, vertical structure and floristic relationships of vascular epiphytes in an urban remnant of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest). This study was conducted in a fragment of montane seasonal semi-deciduous forest (Minas Gerais State) with a history of anthropogenic disturbance. Our goals were to characterise the composition, structure and floristic diversity of vascular epiphytes and to investigate the floristic similarities of the community with other areas of urban seasonal forests in Brazil. We sampled 61 phorophytes with 47 epiphytic species. The richest families were Bromeliaceae (seven) and Polypodiaceae (seven). The most common ecological category was accidental holoepiphytes with 21 species - an unprecedented result for the Neotropical region. The Shannon index was 2.95 and the Pielou evenness index 0.77, showing a relatively high diversity with a few dominant species and numerous rare species. Similarity analyses showed a longitudinal gradient and strong influence of the distance from the ocean on floristic relationships as well as influence of dense ombrophilous forests on the composition of the vascular epiphytes of the surveyed area.Keywords: accidental holoepiphytes, biodiversity hotspot, multivariate analyses, taxonomic diversity, urban forestRESUMO - (Diversidade, estrutura vertical e relacoes floristicas de epifitas vasculares em um remanescente urbano da Floresta Atlântica brasileira). Este estudo foi realizado em um fragmento de floresta estacional semidecidual montana (Minas Gerais) com historico de perturbacao antropica. Os objetivos foram caracterizar a composicao, estrutura e diversidade floristica das epifitas vasculares e investigar a similaridade floristica da comunidade com outras areas de florestas estacionais urbanas no Brasil. Foram amostrados 61 forofitos e registradas 47 especies de epifitas. As familias mais ricas foram Bromeliaceae (sete) e Polypodiaceae (sete). A categoria ecologica mais comum foi a de holoepifitas acidentais com 21 especies - um resultado inedito na Regiao Neotropical. O indice de Shannon foi 2,95 e o indice de uniformidade de Pielou foi 0,77, mostrando diversidade relativamente alta com certa dominância de poucas especies, enquanto as especies raras foram numerosas. Analises de similaridade mostraram gradiente longitudinal e forte influencia da distância do oceano sobre as relacoes floristicas, assim como influencia das florestas ombrofilas densas sobre a composicao das epifitas vasculares na area estudada.Palavras-chave: analises multivariadas, diversidade taxonomica, floresta urbana, holoepifitas acidentais, “hotspot” de biodiversidade

Community ecology of epiphytic Bromeliaceae in a remnant of Atlantic Forest in Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The present study aimed to document the composition, richness, diversity as well as horizontal and vertical distribution of epiphytic Bromeliaceae in a fragment of submontane seasonal semideciduous forest in Minas Gerais State (-21°38'15''S, -43°10'55''W). Three plots (semicircles with a radius of 25 m) were marked and we found 72 phorophytes that harbor 15 species of epiphytic Bromeliaceae, distributed in nine genera. Nidularium azureum (L.B.Sm.) Leme is local endemic, and considered critically endangered. In general, the richness is higher than other larger areas of seasonal semideciduous or even ombrophilous forests. Some differences concerning composition, diversity and richness among the plots were found and must be due to microhabitat conditions. Trunks supported most occurrences (101 out of 246) and Tillandsia stricta Sol. ex Sims had the highest frequency on the phorophytes. The values of H' = 2.34 and J = 0.87 must be considered similar or even higher than some ombrophilous forests.

A new species of Stelis from Brazil is described and illustrated. Stelis concava is the third species of the S. sect. Humboldtia known in Brazil and the first described in the Atlantic Forest.

O Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca esta localizado no sudeste de Minas Gerais, entre os municipios de Lima Duarte, Santa Rita de Ibitipoca e Bias Fortes (21o40’-21o44’S e 43o52’-43o55’W). Compreende uma area de 1.488 ha, com altitudes entre 1100 e 1748 m.s.m., e vegetacao com predominância de campos rupestres. O objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar um levantamento de Cactaceae no PEIB. A familia esta representada na area por quatro generos e sete especies, listados a seguir: Arthrocereus melanurus subsp. magnus , Hatiora salicornioides , Rhipsalis elliptica, Rhipsalis floccosa subsp. pulvinigera , R . juengeri , R . pulchra e Schlumbergera opuntioides. Sao apresentadas chave de identificacao, descricoes, ilustracoes, comentarios taxonomicos e ecologicos para as especies.
