1. Anyonic statistics and slow quasiparticle dynamics in a graphene fractional quantum Hall interferometer

Abstract

Anyons are two dimensional particles with fractional exchange statistics that emerge as elementary excitations of fractional quantum Hall phases. Experimentally, anyonic statistics manifest directly in the edge-state Fabry-P\'erot interferometer geometry, where the presence of $N_{qp}$ localized anyons in the interferometer bulk contributes a phase $N_{qp} \theta_a$ to the observed interference pattern, where $\theta_a$ is twice the statistical exchange phase. Here, we report a measurement of $\theta_a$ in a monolayer graphene Fabry-P\'erot interferometer at $\nu$ = 1/3. We find a preponderance of phase slips with magnitudes $\Delta \theta \approx 2 \pi / 3$, confirming the result of past experiments in GaAs quantum wells and consistent with expectations for the tunneling of Abelian anyons into the interferometer bulk. In contrast to prior work, however, single anyon tunneling events manifest as instantaneous and irreversible phase slips, indicative of quasiparticle equilibration times exceeding 20 minutes in some cases. We use the discrepancy between the quasiparticle equilibration rate and our measurement speed to vary the interferometer area and $N_{qp}$ independently, allowing us to precisely determine the interferometer phase and monitor the entry and exit of individual anyons to the interferometer loop in the time domain. Besides providing a replication of previous interferometric measurements sensitive to $\theta_a$ in GaAs, our results bring anyon dynamics into the experimental regime and suggest that the average `topological charge' of a mesoscopic quantum Hall device can be held constant over hour long timescales., Comment: Main Text: 9 pages, 4 figures. We examine an economy in which interactions are more productive if agents can trust others to refrain from cheating. Some agents are scoundrels, who always cheat, while others cheat only if the cost of cheating, a decreasing function of the proportion of cheaters, is sufficiently low. The economy exhibits multiple equilibria. As the proportion of scoundrels in the economy declines, the high-trust equilibrium can be disrupted by arbitrarily small perturbations or infusions of low-trust agents, while the low-trust equilibrium becomes impervious to perturbations and infusions of high-trust agents. Abstract

We demonstrate experimentally non-equilibrium transport in unipolar quasi-1D hot electron devices reaching ballistic limit. The devices are realized with heterostructure engineering in nanowires to obtain dopant- and dislocation-free 1D-epitaxy and flexible bandgap engineering. We show experimentally the control of hot electron injection with a graded conduction band profile and subsequent filtering of hot and relaxed electrons with rectangular energy barriers. The number of electron passing the barrier depends exponentially on the transport length with a mean free path of 200 - 260 nm and reaches ballistic transport regime for the shortest devices with 70 % of the electrons flying freely through the base electrode and the barrier reflections limiting the transport to the collector.

4. A Categorical Treatment of Open Linear Systems

Abstract

An open stochastic system \`a la Willems is a system affected two qualitatively different kinds of uncertainty -- one is probabilistic fluctuation, and the other one is nondeterminism caused by lack of information. We give a formalization of open stochastic systems in the language of category theory. A new construction, which we term copartiality, is needed to model the propagating lack of information (which corresponds to varying sigma-algebras). As a concrete example, we discuss extended Gaussian distributions, which combine Gaussian probability with nondeterminism and correspond precisely to Willems' notion of Gaussian linear systems. We describe them both as measure-theoretic and abstract categorical entities, which enables us to rigorously describe a variety of phenomena like noisy physical laws and uninformative priors in Bayesian statistics. The category of extended Gaussian maps can be seen as a mutual generalization of Gaussian probability and linear relations, which connects the literature on categorical probability with ideas from control theory like signal-flow diagrams.

Abstract

We introduce Graphical Quadratic Algebra (GQA), a string diagrammatic calculus extending the language of Graphical Affine Algebra with a new generator characterised by invariance under rotation matrices. We show that GQA is a sound and complete axiomatisation for three different models: quadratic relations, which are a compositional formalism for least-squares problems, Gaussian stochastic processes, and Gaussian stochastic processes extended with non-determinisms. The equational theory of GQA sheds light on the connections between these perspectives, giving an algebraic interpretation to the interplay of stochastic behaviour, relational behaviour, non-determinism, and conditioning. As applications, we discuss various case studies, including linear regression, probabilistic programming, and electrical circuits with realistic (noisy) components.

Abstract

Quantum point contacts (QPCs) are an essential component in mesoscopic devices. Here, we study the transmission of quantum Hall edge modes through a gate-defined QPC in monolayer graphene. We observe resonant tunneling peaks and a nonlinear conductance pattern characteristic of Coulomb-blockaded localized states. The in-plane electric polarizability reveals the states are localized at a classically-unstable electrostatic saddle point. We explain this unexpected finding within a self-consistent Thomas-Fermi model, finding that localization of a zero-dimensional state at the saddle point is favored whenever the applied confinement potential is sufficiently soft compared to the Coulomb energy. We define a monoidal category $\operatorname{\mathbf{W}}$ and a closely related 2-category $\operatorname{\mathbf{2Weyl}}$ using diagrammatic methods. We show that $\operatorname{\mathbf{2Weyl}}$ acts on the category $\mathbf{TL} :=\bigoplus_n \operatorname{TL}_n\operatorname{-mod}$ of modules over Temperley-Lieb algebras, with its generating 1-morphisms acting by induction and restriction. The Grothendieck groups of $\operatorname{\mathbf{W}}$ and a third category we define $\operatorname{\mathbf W}^\infty$ are closely related to the Weyl algebra. We introduce a compositional framework for convex analysis based on the notion of convex bifunction of Rockafellar. This framework is well-suited to graphical reasoning, and exhibits rich dualities such as the Legendre-Fenchel transform, while generalizing formalisms like graphical linear algebra, convex relations and convex programming. 12. Learning Practices in a Museum Art Studio: Designing a Learning Framework for an Arts-Based Learning Team

This design case explores the design of a learning framework at a museum. Specifically, the case explores the development of learning practices (LPs) for an arts-based learning space and uses these practices to explain and design for learning and deepening engagement. These LPs represent a means for developing a common language across studio educators for the kinds of learning and engagement they sought to support in the museum Art Studio. This framework aligns with the mission and vision of the museum, and the development process helped form the team's common language. In all, this work contributes to research on educator professional teams as well as works attempting to articulate what it means to engage in arts-based learning within a museum setting.

15. Use of Expected Utility (EU) to Evaluate Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Rule-Out Devices for Mammography Screening

Abstract

Background: An artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled rule-out device may autonomously remove patient images unlikely to have cancer from radiologist review. Many published studies evaluate this type of device by retrospectively applying the AI to large datasets and use sensitivity and specificity as the performance metrics. However, these metrics have fundamental shortcomings because they are bound to have opposite changes with the rule-out application of AI. Method: We reviewed two performance metrics to compare the screening performance between the radiologist-with-rule-out-device and radiologist-without-device workflows: positive/negative predictive values (PPV/NPV) and expected utility (EU). We applied both methods to a recent study that reported improved performance in the radiologist-with-device workflow using a retrospective U.S. dataset. We then applied the EU method to a European study based on the reported recall and cancer detection rates at different AI thresholds to compare the potential utility among different thresholds. Results: For the U.S. study, neither PPV/NPV nor EU can demonstrate significant improvement for any of the algorithm thresholds reported. For the study using European data, we found that EU is lower as AI rules out more patients including false-negative cases and reduces the overall screening performance. Conclusions: Due to the nature of the retrospective simulated study design, sensitivity and specificity can be ambiguous in evaluating a rule-out device. We showed that using PPV/NPV or EU can resolve the ambiguity. The EU method can be applied with only recall rates and cancer detection rates, which is convenient as ground truth is often unavailable for non-recalled patients in screening mammography.

Abstract

This report presents the takeaways of the inaugural Workshop on Generative AI and Law (GenLaw), held in July 2023. A cross-disciplinary group of practitioners and scholars from computer science and law convened to discuss the technical, doctrinal, and policy challenges presented by law for Generative AI, and by Generative AI for law, with an emphasis on U.S. law in particular. We begin the report with a high-level statement about why Generative AI is both immensely significant and immensely challenging for law. To meet these challenges, we conclude that there is an essential need for 1) a shared knowledge base that provides a common conceptual language for experts across disciplines; 2) clarification of the distinctive technical capabilities of generative-AI systems, as compared and contrasted to other computer and AI systems; 3) a logical taxonomy of the legal issues these systems raise; and, 4) a concrete research agenda to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing on emerging issues at the intersection of Generative AI and law. In this report, we synthesize the key takeaways from the GenLaw workshop that begin to address these needs. All of the listed authors contributed to the workshop upon which this report is based, but they and their organizations do not necessarily endorse all of the specific claims in this report.

17. Minimal quantum dot based Kitaev chain with only local superconducting proximity effect

Abstract

The possibility to engineer a Kitaev chain in quantum dots coupled via superconductors has recently emerged as a promising path toward topological superconductivity and possibly nonabelian physics. Here, we show that it is possible to avoid some of the main experimental hurdles on this path by using only local proximity effect on each quantum dot in a geometry that resembles a two-dot version of the proposal in New J. Phys. 15 045020 (2013). There is no need for narrow superconducting couplers, additional Andreev bound states, or spatially varying magnetic fields; it suffices with spin-orbit interaction and a constant magnetic field, in combination with control of the superconducting phase to tune the relative strengths of elastic cotunneling and an effective crossed-Andreev-reflection-like process generated by higher-order tunneling. The brain evolved as a sensory-motor machine that drives behavior while being linked to the world through sensors. Human cognition abstracts from these sensory-motor roots but retains intimate ties. The brain's structure reflects this history. How do neural processes at different distances from the sensory and motor surfaces integrate to achieve meaningful and grounded cognition? This is a challenge given the time-continuous and graded nature of sensory-motor processing, which enables continuous online updating. It is also a major challenge to understanding development and autonomous learning, in which the coupling across functional boundaries evolves under the influence of online activation patterns.

19. Similarity in object properties supports cross-situational word learning: Predictions from a dynamic neural model confirmed

Abstract

Learning names for novel objects has been shown to be impacted by the context in which they appear. Manipulations of context, therefore, provide a key pathway to explore these learning dynamics. Here we use a neural process model that instantiates the details of ‘context' to generate novel, counterintuitive predictions about how similarity in object properties influence learning. Specifically, we use a dynamic field model, WOLVES, to simulate and predict learning in a cross-situational word learning task in two conditions: one where the two objects presented on each learning trial are metrically similar in a property (‘NEAR') and another condition where the two objects are always dissimilar (‘FAR'). WOLVES predicts—counterintuitively—that participants should learn better in the ‘NEAR' condition (where objects are potentially confusable) than in ‘FAR' condition (where objects are distinctive). We then tested this prediction empirically, finding support for the novel prediction. This study shows the utility of process models which instantiate the details of ‘context' during learning and provides support for WOLVES. We know of no other theory of cross-situational word learning that captures these novel findings.

20. Foraging distance distributions reveal how honeybee waggle dance recruitment varies with landscape

Abstract Honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies use a unique collective foraging system, the waggle dance, to communicate and process the location of resources. Here, we present a means to quantify the effect of recruitment on colony forager allocation across the landscape by simply observing the waggle dance on the dancefloor. We show first, through a theoretical model, that recruitment leaves a characteristic imprint on the distance distribution of foraging sites that a colony visits, which varies according to the proportion of trips driven by individual search. Next, we fit this model to the real-world empirical distance distribution of forage sites visited by 20 honeybee colonies in urban and rural landscapes across South East England, obtained via dance decoding. We show that there is considerable variation in the use of dancing information in colony foraging, particularly in agri-rural landscapes. In our dataset, reliance on dancing increases as arable land gives way to built-up areas, suggesting that dancing may have the greatest impact on colony foraging in the complex and heterogeneous landscapes of forage-rich urban areas. Our model provides a tool to assess the relevance of this extraordinary behaviour across modern anthropogenic landscape types.

21. Natural killer cell effector function is critical for host defense against alcohol-associated bacterial pneumonia

Abstract Alcohol use is an independent risk factor for the development of bacterial pneumonia due, in part, to impaired mucus-facilitated clearance, macrophage phagocytosis, and recruitment of neutrophils. Alcohol consumption is also known to reduce peripheral natural killer (NK) cell numbers and compromise NK cell cytolytic activity, especially NK cells with a mature phenotype. However, the role of innate lymphocytes, such as NK cells during host defense against alcohol-associated bacterial pneumonia is essentially unknown. We have previously shown that indole supplementation mitigates increases in pulmonary bacterial burden and improves pulmonary NK cell recruitment in alcohol-fed mice, which were dependent on aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signaling. Employing a binge-on-chronic alcohol-feeding model we sought to define the role and interaction of indole and NK cells during pulmonary host defense against alcohol-associated pneumonia. We demonstrate that alcohol dysregulates NK cell effector function and pulmonary recruitment via alterations in two key signaling pathways. We found that alcohol increases transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling while suppressing AhR signaling. We further demonstrated that NK cells isolated from alcohol-fed mice have a reduced ability to kill Klebsiella pneumoniae. NK cell migratory capacity to chemokines was also significantly altered by alcohol, as NK cells isolated from alcohol-fed mice exhibited preferential migration in response to CXCR3 chemokines but exhibited reduced migration in response to CCR2, CXCR4, and CX3CR1 chemokines. Together this data suggests that alcohol disrupts NK cell-specific TGF-β and AhR signaling pathways leading to decreased pulmonary recruitment and cytolytic activity thereby increasing susceptibility to alcohol-associated bacterial pneumonia.

22. Obtaining and Interpreting Students' Attitudes -- Some Methodological Considerations and a Case Study

Obtaining students' attitudes, opinions, feedback, etc., plays an essential role in the higher educational process because it makes it more bidirectional and engaging for the students. Including larger populations in surveys often calls for informational structuring/standardization for subsequent statistical post-processing. Moreover, it brings along some well-known methodological issues (e.g., the central tendency in Likert scale-based surveys). Here we build upon a relatively large student survey case previously presented more extensively in [1]. That survey was devoted to various aspects of economics and business-related education offered on an elective basis to electrical engineering and computer science students. Here we focus on the interference between the intrinsic information (that is, the "true type" student responses) and the processing method that, if not designed carefully, can increase incentives for students to conceal their true type and recourse to the neutral ("central") answers. We also discuss our new practical approach currently tested in a similar population.

A survey with 53 questions was carried out among the second-year students of the Faculty of electrical engineering and computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia, in June 2020, to acquire feedback about the motives of engineering students to elect economics/business-related courses when they have alternatives, their previous knowledge of economic topics, and basic financial literacy. The gender differences in the answers were statistically tested, showing no important differences. However, the structure of the population implied that the female students were less interested in the economics/business courses.

25. Tuning Learners to Linguistic Diversity using the “Your Words” Activity

The “Your Words” activity invites students to explore how they vary the ways that they communicate in their various speech communities (Morgan, 2014; Rampton, 2020). Students may consider their speech communities in only general terms, such as “I am a speaker of English and Cantonese because I am a resident of Hong Kong.” Or “I am from Miami, so I speak English and Spanish at home. Or “I like to skateboard, and I share some jargon with my skate mates that I don’t use in other situations.” To help them reflect more deeply on communities for which they may not have names, the “Your Words” activity invites them to reflect on and share a word or phrase that they only use in specific social groups that form part of their lives. The discussion that follows encourages students to consider how they modify the way they communicate as they move through the different speech communities that are part of their daily lives. The activity is useful for raising awareness of speech communities before introducing discussions about language attitudes and beliefs that can help prepare pre-service teachers for working with students whose linguistic and cultural diversity is unfamiliar to them.

26. Nanoscale electrostatic control in ultraclean van der Waals heterostructures by local anodic oxidation of graphite gates

Abstract

In an all-van der Waals heterostructure, the active layer, gate dielectrics and gate electrodes are assembled from two-dimensional crystals that have a low density of atomic defects. This design allows two-dimensional electron systems with very low disorder to be created, particularly in heterostructures where the active layer also has intrinsically low disorder, such as crystalline graphene layers or metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers. A key missing ingredient has been nanoscale electrostatic control, with existing methods for fabricated local gates typically introducing unwanted contamination. Here we describe a resist-free local anodic oxidation process for patterning sub-100 nm features in graphite gates, and their subsequent integration into an all-van der Waals heterostructure. We define a quantum point contact in the fractional quantum Hall regime as a benchmark device and observe signatures of chiral Luttinger liquid behaviour, indicating an absence of extrinsic scattering centres in the vicinity of the point contact. In the integer quantum Hall regime, we demonstrate in situ control of the edge confinement potential, a key requirement for the precision control of chiral edge states. This technique may enable the fabrication of devices capable of single anyon control and coherent edge-state interferometry in the fractional quantum Hall regime.

SM use in medicine has seen adoption in parallel to its general ascendancy, even though the platforms are products with purposes misaligned with the practice of medicine. Objective.--To (1) characterize premises and forces that propel professional SM platform adoption and use, and (2) examine wide-ranging literature, both medical and nonmedical, that substantiates the premises and to find counteracting perspectives and evidence. Data Sources.--Review of the literature using relevant keyword searches in PubMed, Google Scholar, Dimensions, and Web of Science for articles that study/ describe professional SM use in pathology and medicine. Additionally, we examined business, technology, and social sciences literature and high-quality gray literature (newspapers, books, blogs) that addressed questions in relation to the topic of professional SM adoption. Conclusions.--We identified 6 major premises as motivators of professional SM use and highlight significant counteracting factors. Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

Direct thermal-to-electric energy converters typically operate in the linear regime, where the ratio of actual maximum power relative to the ideal maximum power, the so-called fill factor (FF), is 0.25. By increasing the FF one can potentially increase maximum power by up to four times, but this is only possible in the nonlinear regime of transport and has previously rarely been considered. Here we show, based on fundamental symmetry considerations, that the leading order non-linear terms that can increase the FF require devices with broken spatial symmetry. To experimentally demonstrate such a system, we study nonlinear, thermoelectric transport across an asymmetric energy barrier epitaxially defined in a single semiconductor nanowire. We find in both experiment and theory that we can increase the FF above the linear-response limit of 0.25, accompanied by a drastic increase in short circuit current, open-circuit voltage and maximum power. Our results show that geometric symmetry breaking combined with the design of nonlinear behaviour represent a design strategy for increasing the performance of thermal-to-electric energy converters such as in hot-carrier photovoltaics, thermophotovoltaics or in anisotropic thermoelectric materials., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

In the past decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms have made promising impacts to transform healthcare in all aspects. One application is to triage patients' radiological medical images based on the algorithm's binary outputs. Such AI-based prioritization software is known as computer-aided triage and notification (CADt). Their main benefit is to speed up radiological review of images with time-sensitive findings. However, as CADt devices become more common in clinical workflows, there is still a lack of quantitative methods to evaluate a device's effectiveness in saving patients' waiting times. In this paper, we present a mathematical framework based on queueing theory to calculate the average waiting time per patient image before and after a CADt device is used. We study four workflow models with multiple radiologists (servers) and priority classes for a range of AI diagnostic performance, radiologist's reading rates, and patient image (customer) arrival rates. Due to model complexity, an approximation method known as the Recursive Dimensionality Reduction technique is applied. We define a performance metric to measure the device's time-saving effectiveness. A software tool is developed to simulate clinical workflow of image review/interpretation, to verify theoretical results, and to provide confidence intervals of the performance metric we defined. It is shown quantitatively that a triage device is more effective in a busy, short-staffed setting, which is consistent with our clinical intuition and simulation results. Although this work is motivated by the need for evaluating CADt devices, the framework we present in this paper can be applied to any algorithm that prioritizes customers based on its binary outputs.

Abstract

Abstract The metal ion transporter SLC39A8 is associated with physiological traits and diseases, including blood manganese (Mn) levels and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The mechanisms by which SLC39A8 controls Mn homeostasis and epithelial integrity remain elusive. Here, we generate Slc39a8 intestinal epithelial cell-specific-knockout (Slc39a8-IEC KO) mice, which display markedly decreased Mn levels in blood and most organs. Radiotracer studies reveal impaired intestinal absorption of dietary Mn in Slc39a8-IEC KO mice. SLC39A8 is localized to the apical membrane and mediates 54Mn uptake in intestinal organoid monolayer cultures. Unbiased transcriptomic analysis identifies alkaline ceramidase 1 (ACER1), a key enzyme in sphingolipid metabolism, as a potential therapeutic target for SLC39A8-associated IBDs. Importantly, treatment with an ACER1 inhibitor attenuates colitis in Slc39a8-IEC KO mice by remedying barrier dysfunction. Our results highlight the essential roles of SLC39A8 in intestinal Mn absorption and epithelial integrity and offer a therapeutic target for IBD associated with impaired Mn homeostasis.

Abstract

This Indigenous-led project aims to better understand historical and contemporary ways in which Alaska Native Peoples steward salmon and the values connected to salmon stewardship. Indigenous Peoples have stewarded Alaska lands and waters for thousands of years yet have been largely excluded from western science and management systems. In this project, we utilize a participatory approach that allows for the equitable valuing of ideas and knowledges to document the breadth and depth of Yup'ik and Athabascan knowledge and governance systems in southwestern Alaska. We reshape research methodologies by centering Indigenous frameworks and methodologies, including circle dialogues and multi-generational interviews led by Indigenous scholars and students in their home communities and regions. In this paper, we share the Yup'ik and Athabascan values, knowledge, management, and governance mechanisms that can improve the long-term sustainability and equity of Alaska salmon systems. This research elevates the voices of Alaska Native salmon stewards and experts from the Kuskokwim Bay and the Kuskokwim River. We elaborate on five key themes that emerged from this research, including traditional Indigenous ways of life, Indigenous stewardship, self-determination, food and livelihood sovereignty, and ecosystem changes, and identify a more equitable and sustainable path forward for salmon and people in Alaska.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: This study reports the results of a set of discrimination experiments using simulated images that represent the appearance of subtle lesions in low-dose computed tomography (CT) of the lungs. Noise in these images has a characteristic ramp-spectrum before apodization by noise control filters. We consider three specific diagnostic features that determine whether a lesion is considered malignant or benign, two system-resolution levels, and four apodization levels for a total of 24 experimental conditions. PURPOSE: The goal of the investigation is to better understand how well human observers perform subtle discrimination tasks like these, and the mechanisms of that performance. We use a forced-choice psychophysical paradigm to estimate observer efficiency and classification images. These measures quantify how effectively subjects can read the images, and how they use images to perform discrimination tasks across the different imaging conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The simulated CT images used as stimuli in the psychophysical experiments are generated from high-resolution objects passed through a modulation transfer function (MTF) before down-sampling to the image-pixel grid. Acquisition noise is then added with a ramp noise-power spectrum (NPS), with subsequent smoothing through apodization filters. The features considered are lesion size, indistinct lesion boundary, and a nonuniform lesion interior. System resolution is implemented by an MTF with resolution (10% max.) of 0.47 or 0.58 cyc/mm. Apodization is implemented by a Shepp-Logan filter (Sinc profile) with various cutoffs. Six medically naïve subjects participated in the psychophysical studies, entailing training and testing components for each condition. Training consisted of staircase procedures to find the 80% correct threshold for each subject, and testing involved 2000 psychophysical trials at the threshold value for each subject. Human-observer performance is compared to the Ideal Observer to generate estimates of task efficiency. The significance of imaging factors is assessed using ANOVA. Classification images are used to estimate the linear template weights used by subjects to perform these tasks. Classification-image spectra are used to analyze subject weights in the spatial-frequency domain. RESULTS: Overall, average observer efficiency is relatively low in these experiments (10%-40%) relative to detection and localization studies reported previously. We find significant effects for feature type and apodization level on observer efficiency. Somewhat surprisingly, system resolution is not a significant factor. Efficiency effects of the different features appear to be well explained by the profile of the linear templates in the classification images. Increasingly strong apodization is found to both increase the classification-image weights and to increase the mean-frequency of the classification-image spectra. A secondary analysis of Unapodized classification images shows that this is largely due to observers undoing (inverting) the effects of apodization filters. CONCLUSIONS: These studies demonstrate that human observers can be relatively inefficient at feature-discrimination tasks in ramp-spectrum noise. Observers appear to be adapting to frequency suppression implemented in apodization filters, but there are residual effects that are not explained by spatial weighting patterns. The studies also suggest that the mechanisms for improving performance through the application of noise-control filters may require further investigation.

Abstract

The natural biological occurrence of menstruation occurs among half of the world’s population, yet the experience of those who menstruate is not commonly discussed. Challenges related to menstruation include stigma and shame around menstruation, access to menstrual health services, the invisibility of menstrual pain, management of menstrual flow, lack of menstrual education, the menstrual experiences of trans and non-binary people, period poverty, and early menopause among other issues. Current conversations and education around menstruation are inadequate and do not address the root cause of menstrual marginalization: shame and stigma that is deeply ingrained in our shared cultural experience from myriad sources. This Special Collection seeks to address this entrenched stigma by highlighting research conducted in a variety of disciplines, among diverse groups in a variety of cultural traditions, and throughout the reproductive life course.

Abstract

We explore the deliberate infusion of ambiguity into the design of contracts. We show that when the agent is ambiguity-averse and hence chooses an action that maximizes their minimum utility, the principal can strictly gain from using an ambiguous contract, and this gain can be arbitrarily high. We characterize the structure of optimal ambiguous contracts, showing that ambiguity drives optimal contracts towards simplicity. We also provide a characterization of ambiguity-proof classes of contracts, where the principal cannot gain by infusing ambiguity. Finally, we show that when the agent can engage in mixed actions, the advantages of ambiguous contracts disappear.

Abstract

One dimensional conductors are described by Luttinger liquid theory, which predicts a power-law suppression of the density of states near the Fermi level. The scaling exponent is non-universal in the general case, but is predicted to be quantized for the chiral edge states of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Here, we report conductance measurements across a point contact linking integer and fractional quantum Hall edge states. At weak coupling, we observe the predicted universal quadratic scaling with temperature and voltage. At strong coupling, the conductance saturates to e^2/2h, arising from perfect Andreev reflection of fractionalized quasi-particles at the point contact. We use the strong coupling physics to realize a nearly dissipationless DC voltage step-up transformer, whose gain of 3/2 arises directly from topological fractionalization of electrical charge., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects 30 million Americans. Previous epidemiologic work has shown that diet can impact pulmonary function in those with and without COPD. Diet is also a major driver of gut microbiome composition and function. Importantly, the gut microbiome has also been associated with lung health (i.e., the gut-lung axis) in both preclinical and clinical studies. Despite this growing body of evidence, many questions remain regarding the gut-lung axis. Specifically, how the microbiome impacts the relationship between diet factors and spirometry or stage of disease in people with COPD is little understood. We hypothesize that there are taxonomic differences in the gut microbiome among the different stages of COPD and that diet microbiome interactions influence pulmonary function. This study aimed to identify how the GI microbiota correlated with the severity of respiratory disease in COPD patients and how the microbiome may mediate the relationship between diet, including fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, and lung function outcomes.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The cyst wall of the eye pathogen Acanthamoeba castellanii contains cellulose and has ectocyst and endocyst layers connected by conical ostioles. Cyst walls contain families of lectins that localize to the ectocyst layer (Jonah) or the endocyst layer and ostioles (Luke and Leo). How lectins and an abundant laccase bind cellulose and why proteins go to locations in the wall are not known and are the focus of the studies here. Structural predictions identified β-jelly-roll folds (BJRFs) of Luke and sets of four disulfide knots (4DKs) of Leo, each of which contains linear arrays of aromatic amino acids, also present in carbohydrate-binding modules of bacterial and plant endocellulases. Ala mutations showed that these aromatics are necessary for cellulose binding and proper localization of Luke and Leo in the Acanthamoeba cyst wall. BJRFs of Luke, 4DKs of Leo, a single β-helical fold (BHF) of Jonah, and a copper oxidase domain of the laccase each bind to glycopolymers in both layers of deproteinated cyst walls. Promoter swaps showed that ectocyst localization does not just correlate with but is caused by early encystation-specific expression, while localization in the endocyst layer and ostioles is caused by later expression. Evolutionary studies showed distinct modes of assembly of duplicated domains in Luke, Leo, and Jonah lectins and suggested Jonah BHFs originated from bacteria, Luke BJRFs share common ancestry with slime molds, while 4DKs of Leo are unique to Acanthamoeba.IMPORTANCEAcanthamoebae is the only human parasite with cellulose in its cyst wall and conical ostioles that connect its inner and outer layers. Cyst walls are important virulence factors because they make Acanthamoebae resistant to surface disinfectants, hand sanitizers, contact lens sterilizers, and antibiotics applied to the eye. The goal here was to understand better how proteins are targeted to specific locations in the cyst wall. To this end, we identified three new proteins in the outer layer of the cyst wall, which may be targets for diagnostic antibodies in corneal scrapings. We used structural predictions and mutated proteins to show linear arrays of aromatic amino acids of two unrelated wall proteins are necessary for binding cellulose and proper wall localization. We showed early expression during encystation causes proteins to localize to the outer layer, while later expression causes proteins to localize to the inner layer and the ostioles.

Abstract

Objective: Diabetes-related care makes up approximately 24% of outpatient clinic visits. Therefore, confidence and understanding of diabetes management is necessary for family medicine residents. Methods: We developed a combined lecture and simulation lab curriculum utilizing a registered nurse and pharmacist to deliver education to 20 family medicine learners. Pre and post surveys of the educational material were completed in 2 sections including one gauging medical knowledge and a second part gauging level of comfort. Results: Of the learners who participated, fourteen completed the pre-post surveys. Most (53%) respondents improved their scores, while 20% scored the same 27% scored worse. The overall average score increased 57% to 70% and improvement was statistically significant ( P
