Abstract Background The objective of this systematic review is to identify characteristics, trends, and gaps in measurement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education research. Methods We searched across several peer-reviewed sources, including a book, similar systematic reviews, conference proceedings, one online repository, and four databases that index the major STEM education research journals. We included empirical studies that reported on psychometric development of scales developed on college/university students for the context of post-secondary STEM education in the US. We excluded studies examining scales that ask about specific content knowledge and contain less than three items. Results were synthesized using descriptive statistics. Results Our final sample included the total number of N = 82 scales across N = 72 studies. Participants in the sampled studies were majority female and White, most scales were developed in an unspecified STEM/science and engineering context, and the most frequently measured construct was attitudes. Internal structure validity emerged as the most prominent validity evidence, with exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) being the most common. Reliability evidence was dominated by internal consistency evidence in the form of Cronbach’s alpha, with other forms being scarcely reported, if at all. Discussion Limitations include only focusing on scales developed in the United States and in post-secondary contexts, limiting the scope of the systematic review. Our findings demonstrate that when developing scales for STEM education research, many types of psychometric properties, such as differential item functioning, test–retest reliability, and discriminant validity are scarcely reported. Furthermore, many scales only report internal structure validity (EFA and/or CFA) and Cronbach’s alpha, which are not enough evidence alone. We encourage researchers to look towards the full spectrum of psychometric evidence both when choosing scales to use and when developing their own. While constructs such as attitudes and disciplines such as engineering were dominant in our sample, future work can fill in the gaps by developing scales for disciplines, such as geosciences, and examine constructs, such as engagement, self-efficacy, and perceived fit.

Summary: It is widely believed that hematopoiesis after birth is established by hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the bone marrow and that HSC-independent hematopoiesis is limited only to primitive erythro-myeloid cells and tissue-resident innate immune cells arising in the embryo. Here, surprisingly, we find that significant percentages of lymphocytes are not derived from HSCs, even in 1-year-old mice. Instead, multiple waves of hematopoiesis occur from embryonic day 7.5 (E7.5) to E11.5 endothelial cells, which simultaneously produce HSCs and lymphoid progenitors that constitute many layers of adaptive T and B lymphocytes in adult mice. Additionally, HSC lineage tracing reveals that the contribution of fetal liver HSCs to peritoneal B-1a cells is minimal and that the majority of B-1a cells are HSC independent. Our discovery of extensive HSC-independent lymphocytes in adult mice attests to the complex blood developmental dynamics spanning the embryo-to-adult transition and challenges the paradigm of HSCs exclusively underpinning the postnatal immune system.

Meaningful learning resources for earthquake safety and survival have become an increasingly important topic among geoscientists, especially educators and researchers. Various members of the public, especially K-12 (ages 5-18) learners, continue to depend on scientific trade books available at their local public and school libraries for information about earthquake concepts. To our knowledge, no research has empirically examined how trade books represent earthquake safety and survival actions. In this research, we combine an iterative qualitative inductive and deductive analysis to explore the representation of earthquake safety and protective actions in 50 trade books. We categorize these actions into time-based practices related to preparedness before an earthquake, protective actions during an earthquake, and recovery after an earthquake. These trade books emphasize preparedness by means of building earthquake-resistant structures and urban planning, and efforts toward community resilience and keeping home supplies. The recommended personal protective action during an earthquake in the United States ("Drop, Cover, and Hold On") is emphasized in the majority of the trade books, as well as other protective actions related to emotional actions and current technological automated actions such as earthquake early warning systems. Finally, the books highlight actions such as damage evaluation and support as ways to recover after an earthquake. Our findings highlight the issues between accepted earthquake safety and survival actions and the limited and/or inaccurate knowledge represented in some trade books. We provide interpretations of how presentation of limited or inaccurate information may increase confusion about appropriate protective actions. The inclusion of accepted and recommended protective actions in future trade books and the use of earthquake drills in public libraries as a supplement for trade book users may improve understanding and implementation of appropriate actions. We further demonstrate the potential of trade book contents in fostering earthquake education through library-community partnerships.

Recent advances in developmental immunology have revealed a hematopoietic stem cell (HSC)-independent origin for various innate immune lineages, including mast cells (MCs). It is now established that adult bone marrow (BM) long-term HSCs do not regenerate MCs but, instead, the physiological production of MCs starts before the emergence of HSCs in the aorta-gonad-mesonephros (AGM) region and is mostly completed before birth. However, while the AGM region represents a major site of MC generation during ontogeny, whether the first emerging HSCs in the AGM or fetal liver (FL) possess the potential to regenerate MCs is unknown. Here, we combined three fate-mapping mouse models with detailed HSC transplantation assays to determine the potential of AGM and FL HSCs to produce MCs. We show that HSCs from E11.5 AGM and E12.5 FL efficiently repopulated MCs in recipients. In stark contrast, HSCs from ≥E14.5 FL failed to reconstitute MCs. An Endothelial (EC) fate-mapping study confirmed the EC origin of the majority of MCs. Additionally, our HSC-labeling showed that HSCs do not produce MCs in a physiological setting. Hence, although most MCs are generated and maintained via an HSC-independent pathway, the earliest HSCs to emerge in the AGM and seed the early FL can produce MCs, but only during a minimal time window. Our results challenge the stem cell theory in hematology and EC-derived mast cells may contribute to the pathogenesis of postnatal mast cell disorders.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created numerous disruptions for educators and researchers, especially in 2020 and 2021. Critical in-person activities, including research, have been postponed or canceled throughout the academic and professional communities of the world. The Project SEED (Summer Experiences for the Economically Disadvantaged) program for high school students in the Ecohydrology Lab at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis was no exception. The 2020 and 2021 programs, originally scheduled for in person (2 months in the summer) was moved online with a similar time frame. The goals of Project SEED are to provide high school students with the opportunity to explore a career in the sciences and be involved in research at industries and universities. The goals remained the same during the virtual years and we had a total of two students who participated in the program in 2020 and 2021. In this commentary, we outline the experiences of moving the program to a virtual environment, and reflect on the experiences that motivated students' participation and success in the program with adjusted project designs. According to student reflections and our discussions with the students, changing the research experiences to include data gathering and analysis (data mining) from published literature rather than the usual hands-on experiments, regular online interactions, enhancing student independence, and making mentors easily accessible were effective in fostering students' participation and success in the program. With these new practices, the educational outcome of the virtual version of the Project SEED program is similar to the pre-pandemic program based on the quality of the final products (i.e., presentations) and students' reflections. Informed by these experiences, this commentary makes recommendations for developing virtual research environments to assist students in realizing their potential and research goals. The suggested practices have implications for other educational settings (e.g., international programs through virtual environments).

Geoscience employers have increasingly called for the future workforce (students) to demonstrate competence in non-technical skills, including teamwork. This descriptive qualitative study contributes to ongoing efforts to identify the specific practices, skills, habits, and knowledge that make up these desired teamwork competencies in the geosciences. We collected interview data from three online focus group discussions centered around teamwork. Focus group participants (n = 12) were hydrogeology and environmental geology employers and team managers from government, private industry, and nonprofit organizations in the United States. Using a teamwork skills taxonomy model as our conceptual framework, we coded the transcripts to generate three categories of teamwork skills specific to environmental geoscience teams. First, our data indicate that these employers value team transition skills related to specifying goals, interpreting team tasks, identifying resources, and planning. The second category of desired teamwork competencies included action skills such as metacognition, coordination, and mentoring. These skills directly impact successful task completion. The third category captured interpersonal skills such as emotional intelligence, proactive communication, and organization. A fourth category of desired teamwork competencies emerged from data analysis and include ethical skills related to trust, integrity, and humility. This study provides a detailed description of teamwork competencies desired by environmental geoscience employers. We recommend that geoscience instructors consider using techniques such as intentional teaching of teamwork skills, experiential learning, professional development, and teamwork awareness in order to prepare students for workforce expectations.

Teamwork has been identified as an essential employability skill and learning outcome in the geosciences, especially during fieldwork. Although specific teamwork skills have been identified in prior research, few studies to date have addressed how students develop or use these skills during their educational preparation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, including the geosciences. In this paper, we use a descriptive, qualitative embedded, single-case study to explore how geoscience students develop teamwork skills during a hydrogeology field course in the absence of any explicit instruction about teamwork, using a theoretical lens of input-process-output taxonomy of teamwork skills. We collected data using the Geoscience Teamwork Observation (GTO) protocol and verified findings against focus group discussions held after each week of team observations. We identified that students do use a wide range of teamwork skills in the absence of instruction on teamwork, and these skills changed across different teams and under different contexts during fieldwork. Student teams most frequently used skills of communication, leadership, peer-mentoring and teaching, and coordination. Skills related to goal identification, information synthesis and organizational management were utilized least often. We recommend instructional strategies that explicitly treat teamwork skills as learning outcomes, prior teaching of teamwork as part of fieldwork, and using observations as a strategy for teaching and assessing teamwork during fieldwork. We also provide a shared approach for evaluating teamwork skills to enhance workforce preparation and draw attention to key issues relating to creating effective teamwork outcomes during fieldwork.

Training students to become ethical geoscientists has generated significant interest, particularly when confronted with the need to consider geoscience practice in light of geo-technological advances and environmental issues associated with resource extraction, pollution, and climate change. In this research, we examine from the perspective of student geoscientists what it means to be an ethical geoscientist. As part of a sedimentology course that explicitly taught ethics through experiential learning, students reflected on what it meant to be an ethical geoscientist. The student reflections (N = 37) collected at the beginning and end of the semester were analyzed using thematic analysis and interpreted. We used an ethics of care framework to generate three themes which described attentiveness to care, responsibility for care, and competency to provide care. First, attentiveness to care described the act of recognizing one's own need and the need of others and making intentional efforts to address those needs. Student reflections revealed that attentiveness to one's integrity and reflecting on one's own actions in their interactions are important characteristic of an ethical geoscientist. Second, responsibility for care described the recognition of the need to care for the things with which we interact. Students described that being responsible for societal and environmental needs, such as promoting scientific literacy and guarding other species, are the hallmarks of an ethical geoscientist. Finally, competency to provide care described the availability of effective knowledge, skills, and materials to ethically provide care. Student reflections captured competencies related to scientific practice in ensuring data precision, accuracy, and maintaining caring and ethical relationships with colleagues as ethical geoscience characteristics. We suggest instructional strategies that explicitly teach ethics and critical reflection to foster students' sense of care and interest in geology both as a science and ethical practice.

Current science education efforts emphasise the need to train students to understand the nature of scientific work. In geosciences, training students to understand how science works does not only promote their interest and community engagement in the field, but also has the potential to promote awareness and ethics. However, instructional activities using an explicit and reflective approach to promote students' learning of the nature of science concepts remain scant. In this paper, a two-class unit intervention using an explicit reflective approach to the teaching of nature of science was used in an undergraduate lesson on the history of plate tectonics. We measured the influence of the lesson on students' nature of science knowledge using the Student Understanding of Science and Scientific Inquiry instrument. We collected parallel quantitative and qualitative pre- and post-intervention data from 37 community college students involved in a physical geology course. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis indicated that students' nature of science knowledge related to the tentativeness of scientific theories and the role of society and culture in science improved after the intervention unit. Results imply that geoscience educators should consider using explicit and reflective approaches when using the history of science to teach about the nature of science.

Training a scientific workforce in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change drives an international need for climate science education, including in Ghana. How preservice teachers understand climate change, and the often misunderstood relationship between ozone depletion and global warming, critically impacts the students they will teach. This mixed method, descriptive study explores preservice teachers' climate change and ozone depletion knowledge, and documents the sources of their ideas. Elementary preservice science teachers from three colleges of education in Ghana completed a survey (N = 255) and interview (n = 30). Exploratory factor analysis yielded six factors related to ozone depletion and four related to climate change knowledge. Survey and interview responses revealed that the preservice teachers could explain that stratospheric ozone is a layer of gas in the atmosphere that prevents ultraviolet radiation from reaching Earth. Yet, they could not describe how ozone forms and the mechanism of ozone destruction. The preservice teachers confused climate change with changes in weather and seasons, but could explain how anthropogenic activities like deforestation and burning fossil fuels contribute to climate change. About 88% of the participants thought climate change and ozone depletion were causally linked -- either ozone depletion caused climate change, or climate change caused ozone depletion. The participating preservice teachers identified textbooks (80%), instructors (64%), and the media (62%) as the main sources of their ozone depletion and climate change knowledge. We identified a mix of knowledge gaps and coherent ideas that offer scaffolds on which to improve teachers' knowledge of climate change and ozone depletion.

As much as we think of a geologic map as objective, it is filtered through the experiences of individual geologists and the larger geology community. Thus it is important to understand how geologists become proficient at geologic mapping. As part of a naturalistic study of mapping strategies, 67 geologists ranging from undergraduates to professionals described experiences that promoted personal competence. These interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded and interpreted. Using Lave and Wenger's (1991) theory of situated learning, we generated three categories that captured how learning to map is "situated" relative to the instructional, physical, and cultural environments. First, "content" described how learners acquire skill and knowledge through engaging in practices of experts. Participants reported successfully learning to map through structured progressions that taught content and skill while providing mentored practice. Second, "participation" captured how learners interact with experiences. Participants described long-term, purposeful immersion in the field during which they learned from experiences that encouraged self-reflection and productive struggle. Finally, "community of practice" described meaningful relations that allowed learners to become full members of the professional community. Participants reported how working in peer groups, learning from mentors, and teaching others helped them to learn to map. We present a model of how these themes interact in the context of learning to map, and suggest how mapping instruction might leverage influential experiences. Results suggest that the community of practice was a crucial contributor and that learning was defined as much by the professional community as by the physical environment.

This study examines the outcomes of a four-year faculty learning community (FLC) that aimed to transform departmental ethics curriculum by supporting Earth Sciences faculty members as they ethically inquired into their teaching of ethics and refined existing courses in alignment with an Integrated Community-Engaged Learning and Ethical Reflection (ICELER) framework. We present ethnographic case studies that unpack processes through which three faculty members transformed undergraduate courses. We assembled case studies by triangulating interview data, course artifacts, and faculty reflections. We examine how faculty (1) built awareness around teaching ethics, (2) took responsibility for and made judgments about teaching ethics, (3) experimented by designing and implementing ICELER-inspired courses, and (4) interrogated the outcomes of their ethics teaching, utilizing findings to enhance awareness and revise courses. The paper closes by introducing a model detailing how instructors inquire into ethics teaching and how model components might inspire future educational practice and research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
