Abstract

With the recent growing interest in improving fruit and vegetable intake for better health and limited research resources in many settings, simple-to-administer and low-priced indicators are essential tools for monitoring fruit and vegetable intake at the population level. A potential candidate indicator is the fruit and vegetable component of the Global Dietary Recommendation score (FV-GDR) based on data collected using the Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ). We investigated the relative validity of FV-GDR collected with the DQQ to measure fruit and vegetable intake by comparison with a 24-h recall (24hR) as a reference collected from 620 Vietnamese and 630 Nigerian adults in 2021. We found proportional differences in the prevalence of intake of vitamin A-rich vegetables, other vegetables and other fruits in Vietnam and all vegetable food groups in Nigeria. In both countries, we found a small difference in the total FV-GDR from DQQ compared with the 24hR, and the percentage of agreement between the two methods was quite high for the majority of the food groups. The FV-GDR calculated from the DQQ correlated with the actual intake, although less strongly than the FV-GDR from 24hR. The DQQ is a promising low-burden, low-cost and simple tool to calculate FV-GDR and to monitor fruit and vegetable consumption at the population level. 8. Significant variations in feeding practices and choice of guidelines for the management of late preterm infants among healthcare professionals in Nigeria

Abstract

Aim: We aimed to gain insights into current nutritional management practices of late preterm infants (34–36 weeks gestational age) in Nigeria. Methods: Purposive sampling was employed to recruit 19 healthcare professionals (neonatologists, paediatricians, general practitioners and nurses) involved in the care and nutritional management of late preterm infants in Lagos and Ogun states, Nigeria. Data were collected using interviews, either individually or in small focus groups, between 15 August and 6 September 2022. Thematic analysis of interview transcripts was carried out to interpret the data. Results: Ten distinct themes emerged across the research questions and objectives. For growth monitoring, 11, 6, 1 and 1 of our participants preferred to use the 2006 WHO growth standards, Fenton preterm growth chart, Ballard score and Intergrowth-21, respectively. Regarding the growth velocity of late preterm infants, most healthcare professionals aimed for 15 g/kg BW/day or more during hospitalisation. Breastmilk was unanimously the primary feeding option for late preterm infants. Most healthcare professionals preferred to use international guidelines over local guidelines. Conclusion: Our study shows that there is a wide divergence in the nutritional guidelines used in managing late preterm infants in Nigeria. Regarding growth monitoring, healthcare professionals tended to aim for a growth velocity higher than necessary for late preterm infants, which may be disadvantageous for their long-term health.

15. Nutrient composition, functional and sensory properties of gruel made from local rice

Abstract

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the nutrient composition, functional and sensory properties of complementary diets (gruel) developed from local rice.Methods: Local rice grains and paddy rice were fermented and malted respectively, oven dried, milled and sieved into flour. The samples including the control sample (maize 'ogi') were analyzed for proximate, vitamin, mineral composition, as well as their functional properties using standard methods.Results: The protein value ranged from 5.13-7.90%, while the fat was between 0.22-0.48%, carbohydrates: 82.63-87.77% and ash between 0.25% -0.92%. The calcium and iron content ranged between 56.8-359.7ppm, and 37.61-69.99ppm respectively. Vitamin composition showed Vitamin A ranged between 160.0-341.79I.U, and Vitamin B 0.69-6.57mg. The 2 functional properties ranged from 0.58-0.95g/ml for bulk density, and swelling index 4.66-18.01%. Fermented maize gruel (control) had the highest values for peak viscosity (2549 cP). Samples were significantly different in organoleptic properties.Conclusion: The fermented rice gruel was more accepted than the malted counterpart although the malted rice sample had higher nutritional content, low bulk density and formed thinner and a less viscous gruel.Key words: Local rice, malting, fermentation, paddy rice, maize 'Ogi'

16. Feeding problems in infancy and early childhood: A case study of selected Primary Health Centres in Ibadan North Local Government of Oyo State

Abstract

Objective: This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of feeding problems among children 6 to 24 months of age in Ibadan, Nigeria.Methodology: Two hundred and seventy five mother-child pairs were recruited from four selected Primary Health Centres in Ibadan North Local Government Area. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect information on socioeconomic characteristics, feeding patterns and feeding behaviour of children as well as maternal perception and coping with children's feeding behaviour.Results: Mean age of the children was14.1 ±5.6 months with 55.3% of these being females. On average, mothers were approximately 28 years of age (28.0±5.2 years), married (89.1%), with secondary school education (53.1%).The mostcommon feeding problems observed among the participants were picky eating, food neophobia and intake of limited variety of food. Overall, 52% of the children had one or more feeding problems. Maternal coping strategies with their child's feeding behaviour were majorly use of rewards and force feeding.Conclusion: There exists a spectrum of feeding problems in infancy and childhood in this study population. There is need to provide infant and young child feeding support to mothers to prevent negative impacts of feeding problems on thenutrition and development of their children.Key words: Feeding problems, nutritional status, picky eating, food neophobia

Abstract

Understanding dietary patterns and their determinants can steer efforts to food systems transformations required to provide sustainable healthy diets. Based on 24-hour recall data and using latent class analysis, we characterized dietary patterns of adults from low-income neighborhoods in Hanoi, Vietnam and Ibadan, Nigeria (n=385 and 344, age 18-49 years). We examined sociodemographic determinants and diet quality (diversity, non-communicable disease risk, and micronutrient adequacy) of these patterns. Three dietary patterns were identified in each country. Vietnamese patterns differed in sociodemographic characteristics and diet quality. Nigerian patterns differed in diet quality but not in sociodemographics. Understanding different consumer groups and the drivers of consumption helps to identify tailored interventions to diversify diets and improve diet quality.

Abstract

This cross-sectional study assessed the risk of zinc deficiency in randomly selected children, aged between 7 and 11 years, living in a poor, peri-urban informal settlement in South Africa. Dietary intake of 149 respondents was evaluated by 24-hour recall and quantitative food frequency questionnaires. Anthropometric and biochemical indices of a subset of 113 were determined. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and Pearson correlations were computed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 14.0. Anthropometric data were analysed using the World Health Organization Anthro plus version 1.0.2 statistical software. Dietary data were analysed with FoodFinder® version 3. The mean age of the children was 9.0±1.1 years. Few zinc-rich sources appeared in the diet that was predominantly plant-based. Mean dietary zinc intake was 4.6±2.2 mg/day. The mean value of serum zinc was 66.4±21.5 µg/dL, with 46% of the children having values less than the 70 µg/dL cut-off. The findings indicate a high risk of zinc deficiency and suboptimal zinc status for the majority of this study population of children, possibly as a result of low consumption of food sources with high bioavailability of zinc, which invariably is a direct consequence of poverty and food insecurity., Die doel van hierdie dwarsdeursnitstudie was die bepaling van die risiko van ’n sinktekort in ’n ewekansige steekproef van 7 tot 11 jaar-oue kinders, woonagtig in ’n arm, voorstedelike informele woonbuurt in Suid Afrika. Background: Low fruit and vegetable (FV) intake in low- and middle-income countries, which is associated with noncommunicable diseases and micronutrient deficiencies, requires food system interventions addressing FV accessibility, affordability, and acceptability. Periodic FV intake monitoring during interventions informs progress toward achieving increased intakes and contributes to understanding the effectiveness of these interventions., Objectives: This study evaluates the trend in FV intake before, during, and after implementation of a set of nutrition-sensitive food system interventions addressing accessibility, affordability, and acceptability to increase FV consumption over a 1-y period in Vietnamese and Nigerian low-income urban and periurban females., Methods: We used the Diet Quality Questionnaire to assess FV food group consumption among 600 Vietnamese (Hanoi) and 610 Nigerian (Ibadan) females before, during, and after the interventions (Vietnam: July 2020-September 2021; Nigeria: November 2020-December 2021). A FV score was compared between exposure groups with (mixed) count modeling. The trend in consumption of individual FV groups was analyzed with mixed logistic regression., Results: The FV score was stable over time, and a small increase was observed after the intervention period especially in Nigeria and in urban Vietnam. A decrease in the total score was observed in periurban Vietnam. Fluctuations were detected in the probability of consumption of individual FV groups over time especially within the fruit groups, probably due to seasonal availability. The degree of exposure could not explain differences in FV intake., Conclusions: We found a marginal increase in the proportion of females consuming FV during the interventions in both countries. The FV score appeared to be a simple, quick, and easy-to-use indicator for monitoring diversity, variety, and consumption., (© 2023 The Author(s).)
