Hundreds of exoplanets between 1-1.8 times the size of the Earth have been discovered on close in orbits. However, these planets show such a diversity in densities that some appear to be made entirely of iron, while others appear to host gaseous envelopes. To test this diversity in composition, we update the masses of 5 rocky exoplanets (HD 93963 A b, Kepler-10 b, Kepler-100 b, Kepler-407 b, and TOI-1444 b) and present the confirmation of a new planet (TOI-1011) using 187 high precision RVs from Gemini/MAROON-X and Keck/KPF. Our updated planet masses suggest compositions closer to that of the Earth than previous literature values for all planets in our sample. In particular, we report that two previously identified ``super-Mercuries'' (Kepler-100 b and HD 93963 A b) have lower masses that suggest less iron-rich compositions. We then compare the ratio of iron to rock-building species to the abundance ratios of those elements in their host stars. Emerging from the intricate interplay of topology and magnetism, the giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is the most known topological property of the recently discovered kagome ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co_3Sn_2S_2 with the magnetic Co atoms arranged on a kagome lattice. Here we report that the AHE in Co_3Sn_2S_2 can be fine-tuned by an applied magnetic field orientated within ~2 degrees of the kagome plane, while beyond this regime, it stays unchanged. Particularly, it can vanish in magnetic fields parallel to the kagome plane and even decrease in magnetic fields collinear with the spin direction. This tunable AHE can be attributed to local spin switching enabled by the geometrical frustration of the magnetic kagome lattice, revealing that spins in a kagome ferromagnet change their switching behavior as the magnetic field approaches the kagome plane. Our results also suggest a versatile way to tune the properties of a kagome magnet.

The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. Cyclic ozone additives have the potential to significantly increase the specific impulse of rocket fuel, which would lead to greater efficiency and reduced costs for space launches, allowing up to one third more payload per rocket. Although practical attempts to capture this isomer have not been successful, cyclic ozone might be stabilized within confined geometries. However, the required synthetic methods are challenging to design and need theory-driven inputs that exceed the capabilities of classical methods. Quantum computation could enable these calculations, but the hardware requirements for many practical applications are still unclear. We provide a comprehensive analysis of how quantum methods could aid efforts to isolate cyclic ozone using fullerene encapsulation. Our discussion goes beyond formal complexity analysis, offering both logical and physical overhead estimates for determining ground state energies based on quantum phase estimation (QPE). Together, these data outline a plausible scale for realistic, computationally-assisted molecular design efforts using fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Non-iid data is prevalent in real-world federated learning problems. Data heterogeneity can come in different types in terms of distribution shifts. In this work, we are interested in the heterogeneity that comes from concept shifts, i.e., shifts in the prediction across clients. In particular, we consider multi-task learning, where we want the model to adapt to the task of the client. We propose a parameter-efficient framework to tackle this issue, where each client learns to mix between parameter-efficient adaptors according to its task. We use Low-Rank Adaptors (LoRAs) as the backbone and extend its concept to other types of layers. We call our framework Federated Low-Rank Adaptive Learning (FLoRAL). This framework is not an algorithm but rather a model parameterization for a multi-task learning objective, so it can work on top of any algorithm that optimizes this objective, which includes many algorithms from the literature. FLoRAL is memory-efficient, and clients are personalized with small states (e.g., one number per adaptor) as the adaptors themselves are federated. Hence, personalization is--in this sense--federated as well. Even though clients can personalize more freely by training an adaptor locally, we show that collaborative and efficient training of adaptors is possible and performs better. We also show that FLoRAL can outperform an ensemble of full models with optimal cluster assignment, which demonstrates the benefits of federated personalization and the robustness of FLoRAL to overfitting. We show promising experimental results on synthetic datasets, real-world federated multi-task problems such as MNIST, CIFAR-10, and CIFAR-100. Denoising autoencoders for signal processing applications have been shown to experience significant difficulty in learning to reconstruct radio frequency communication signals, particularly in the large sample regime. In communication systems, this challenge is primarily due to the need to reconstruct the modulated data stream which is generally highly stochastic in nature. In this work, we take advantage of this limitation by using the denoising autoencoder to instead remove interfering radio frequency communication signals while reconstructing highly structured FMCW radar signals. More specifically, in this work we show that a CNN-layer only autoencoder architecture can be utilized to improve the accuracy of a radar altimeter's ranging estimate even in severe interference environments consisting of a multitude of interference signals. This is demonstrated through comprehensive performance analysis of an end-to-end FMCW radar altimeter simulation with and without the convolutional layer-only autoencoder. The proposed approach significantly improves interference mitigation in the presence of both narrow-band tone interference as well as wideband QPSK interference in terms of range RMS error, number of false altitude reports, and the peak-to-sidelobe ratio of the resulting range profile. We develop confidence sets which provide spatial uncertainty guarantees for the output of a black-box machine learning model designed for image segmentation. To do so we adapt conformal inference to the imaging setting, obtaining thresholds on a calibration dataset based on the distribution of the maximum of the transformed logit scores within and outside of the ground truth masks. We prove that these confidence sets, when applied to new predictions of the model, are guaranteed to contain the true unknown segmented mask with desired probability. We show that learning appropriate score transformations on a learning dataset before performing calibration is crucial for optimizing performance. We illustrate and validate our approach on a polpys tumor dataset. To do so we obtain the logit scores from a deep neural network trained for polpys segmentation and show that using distance transformed scores to obtain outer confidence sets and the original scores for inner confidence sets enables tight bounds on tumor location whilst controlling the false coverage rate.

We report the observation of the hyperfine spectrum of the weak P(63)4-4 line of the B-X electronic transition of molecular iodine 127I2 near 652.4 nm, using frequency-modulated saturated absorption spectroscopy. Through the precise measurements of the absolute frequencies of hyperfine components, we estimate electric quadrupole and magnetic spin-rotation constants. Additionally, we determine the center of gravity of the P(63) transition of the 4-4 vibrational band, resulting in a 250-fold improvement in the precision of its position. We also note an interesting overlap of the hyperfine transitions of P(63)4-4 line with the UV 1S0-3P1 narrow intercombination transition of cadmium atoms, which occurs near the second harmonic of the master laser radiation, corresponding to 326.2 nm. This study contributes to updating the iodine atlas, improving the precision of the empirical formulae, and providing an important frequency reference for precision spectroscopy of the narrow intercombination transition of atomic cadmium.

Recent work has suggested that nanoconfined water may exhibit superionic proton transport at lower temperatures and pressures than bulk water. Using first-principles-level simulations, we study the role of nuclear quantum effects in inducing this superionicity in nanoconfined water. We show that nuclear quantum effects increase the ionic conductivity of nanoconfined hexatic water, leading to superionic behaviour at lower temperatures and pressures than previously thought possible. The embedding of complex networks into metric spaces has become a research topic of high interest with a wide variety of proposed methods. Low dimensional hyperbolic spaces offer a natural co-domain for embeddings allowing a roughly uniform spatial distribution of the nodes even for scale-free networks and the efficient navigability and estimation of linking probabilities. According to recent results, the communities of a complex network after optimization can be naturally mapped into well-defined angular sectors of the hyperbolic space. Here we introduce CLOVE, an embedding method exploiting this property based on iterative arrangement of the communities in a hierarchical manner, down to individual nodes. A crucial step in the process is finding the optimal angular order of the communities at a given level of the hierarchy, which is solved based on the Travelling Salesman Problem. Since CLOVE outperforms most of the alternative methods regarding different embedding quality measures and is computationally very efficient, it can be very useful in related down-stream machine learning tasks such as AI based pattern recognition.

Statistical data heterogeneity is a significant barrier to convergence in federated learning (FL). While prior work has advanced heterogeneous FL through better optimization objectives, these methods fall short when there is extreme data heterogeneity among collaborating participants. We hypothesize that convergence under extreme data heterogeneity is primarily hindered due to the aggregation of conflicting updates from the participants in the initial collaboration rounds. To overcome this problem, we propose a warmup phase where each participant learns a personalized mask and updates only a subnetwork of the full model. This personalized warmup allows the participants to focus initially on learning specific subnetworks tailored to the heterogeneity of their data. After the warmup phase, the participants revert to standard federated optimization, where all parameters are communicated. We empirically demonstrate that the proposed personalized warmup via subnetworks (FedPeWS) approach improves accuracy and convergence speed over standard federated optimization methods.

The far-infrared (FIR) - radio correlation (FRC) is one of the most promising empirical constraints on the role of cosmic-rays (CRs) and magnetic fields (\textbf{B}) in galaxy formation and evolution. While many theories have been proposed in order to explain the emergence and maintenance of the FRC across a gamut of galaxy properties and redshift, the non-linear physics at play remain unexplored in full complexity and cosmological context. We present the first reproduction of the $z \sim 0$ FRC using detailed synthetic observations of state-of-the-art cosmological zoom-in simulations from the FIRE-3 suite with explicitly-evolved CR proton and electron (CRe) spectra, for three models for CR transport and multi-channel AGN feedback. In doing so, we generally verify the predictions of `calorimeter' theories at high FIR luminosities (\Lsixty\, $\gtrsim$ 10$^{9.5}$) and at low FIR luminosities (\Lsixty\, $\lesssim$ 10$^{9.5}$) the so-called `conspiracy' of increasing ultraviolet radiation escape in tandem with increasing CRe escape, and find that the global FRC is insensitive to \textit{orders-of-magnitude} locally-variable CR transport coefficients. Importantly, the indirect effect of AGN feedback on emergent observables highlights novel interpretations of outliers in the FRC. In particular, we find that in many cases, `radio-excess' objects can be better understood as \textit{IR-dim} objects with longer-lived radio contributions at low $z$ from Type Ia SNe and intermittent black hole accretion in quenching galaxies, though this is sensitive to the interplay of CR transport and AGN feedback physics. Concept erasure in language models has traditionally lacked a comprehensive evaluation framework, leading to incomplete assessments of effectiveness of erasure methods. We propose an evaluation paradigm centered on three critical criteria: innocence (complete knowledge removal), seamlessness (maintaining conditional fluent generation), and specificity (preserving unrelated task performance). Our evaluation metrics naturally motivate the development of Erasure of Language Memory (ELM), a new method designed to address all three dimensions. ELM employs targeted low-rank updates to alter output distributions for erased concepts while preserving overall model capabilities including fluency when prompted for an erased concept. We demonstrate ELM's efficacy on biosecurity, cybersecurity, and literary domain erasure tasks. Comparative analysis shows that ELM achieves superior performance across our proposed metrics, including near-random scores on erased topic assessments, generation fluency, maintained accuracy on unrelated benchmarks, and robustness under adversarial attacks. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with increasing prevalence among the aging population, necessitating early and accurate diagnosis for effective disease management. In this study, we present a novel hybrid deep learning framework that integrates both 2D Convolutional Neural Networks (2D-CNN) and 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (3D-CNN), along with a custom loss function and volumetric data augmentation, to enhance feature extraction and improve classification performance in AD diagnosis. According to extensive experiments, AlzhiNet outperforms standalone 2D and 3D models, highlighting the importance of combining these complementary representations of data. The depth and quality of 3D volumes derived from the augmented 2D slices also significantly influence the model's performance. The results indicate that carefully selecting weighting factors in hybrid predictions is imperative for achieving optimal results. Our framework has been validated on the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) from Kaggle and MIRIAD datasets, obtaining accuracies of 98.9% and 99.99%, respectively, with an AUC of 100%. Furthermore, AlzhiNet was studied under a variety of perturbation scenarios on the Alzheimer's Kaggle dataset, including Gaussian noise, brightness, contrast, salt and pepper noise, color jitter, and occlusion. The results obtained show that AlzhiNet is more robust to perturbations than ResNet-18, making it an excellent choice for real-world applications. This approach represents a promising advancement in the early diagnosis and treatment planning for Alzheimer's disease.

Traditionally, neural network training has been primarily viewed as an approximation of maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). This interpretation originated in a time when training for multiple epochs on small datasets was common and performance was data bound; but it falls short in the era of large-scale single-epoch trainings ushered in by large self-supervised setups, like language models. In this new setup, performance is compute-bound, but data is readily available. As models became more powerful, in-context learning (ICL), i.e., learning in a single forward-pass based on the context, emerged as one of the dominant paradigms. In this paper, we argue that a more useful interpretation of neural network behavior in this era is as an approximation of the true posterior, as defined by the data-generating process. We demonstrate this interpretations' power for ICL and its usefulness to predict generalizations to previously unseen tasks. We show how models become robust in-context learners by effectively composing knowledge from their training data. We illustrate this with experiments that reveal surprising generalizations, all explicable through the exact posterior. Finally, we show the inherent constraints of the generalization capabilities of posteriors and the limitations of neural networks in approximating these posteriors.

High-end ARM processors are emerging in data centers and HPC systems, posing as a strong contender to x86 machines. Memory-centric profiling is an important approach for dissecting an application's bottlenecks on memory access and guiding optimizations. Many existing memory profiling tools leverage hardware performance counters and precise event sampling, such as Intel PEBS and AMD IBS, to achieve high accuracy and low overhead. In this work, we present a multi-level memory profiling tool for ARM processors, leveraging Statistical Profiling Extension (SPE). We evaluate the tool using both HPC and Cloud workloads on the ARM Ampere processor. The use of deep neural networks in reinforcement learning (RL) often suffers from performance degradation as model size increases. While soft mixtures of experts (SoftMoEs) have recently shown promise in mitigating this issue for online RL, the reasons behind their effectiveness remain largely unknown. In this work we provide an in-depth analysis identifying the key factors driving this performance gain. We discover the surprising result that tokenizing the encoder output, rather than the use of multiple experts, is what is behind the efficacy of SoftMoEs. Indeed, we demonstrate that even with an appropriately scaled single expert, we are able to maintain the performance gains, largely thanks to tokenization.

The sensitivity of electron EDM experiments has been increasing at a rapid pace, and could yield indications of new physics in the coming decade. An intriguing possibility is that an EDM signal could be generated by new, electroweak-charged particles at the TeV scale that couple to the Higgs and contribute to the electron EDM at two-loop order via Barr-Zee diagrams. A high-energy muon collider could decisively search for new physics at this scale. In this work, we explore this complementarity between colliders and EDM experiments, and note that Barr-Zee diagrams from the aforementioned particles are closely related to vector-boson scattering processes at a muon collider. These loop corrections lead to kinematic features in the differential cross sections of these processes, dictated by the optical theorem. We demonstrate this connection in the context of the singlet-doublet and doublet-triplet extensions to the SM, explore the detectability of these features at a muon collider experiment, and discuss how these measurements can be used to ascertain the underlying model parameters., Comment: 22 pages + appendices, 9 figures

A fully Bayesian treatment of complicated predictive models (such as deep neural networks) would enable rigorous uncertainty quantification and the automation of higher-level tasks including model selection. However, the intractability of sampling Bayesian posteriors over many parameters inhibits the use of Bayesian methods where they are most needed. Thermodynamic computing has emerged as a paradigm for accelerating operations used in machine learning, such as matrix inversion, and is based on the mapping of Langevin equations to the dynamics of noisy physical systems. Hence, it is natural to consider the implementation of Langevin sampling algorithms on thermodynamic devices. In this work we propose electronic analog devices that sample from Bayesian posteriors by realizing Langevin dynamics physically. Circuit designs are given for sampling the posterior of a Gaussian-Gaussian model and for Bayesian logistic regression, and are validated by simulations. It is shown, under reasonable assumptions, that the Bayesian posteriors for these models can be sampled in time scaling with $\ln(d)$, where $d$ is dimension. For the Gaussian-Gaussian model, the energy cost is shown to scale with $ d \ln(d)$. This study investigates efficient deduplication techniques for a large NLP dataset of economic research paper titles. We explore various pairing methods alongside established distance measures (Levenshtein distance, cosine similarity) and a sBERT model for semantic evaluation. Our findings suggest a potentially low prevalence of duplicates based on the observed semantic similarity across different methods. Further exploration with a human-annotated ground truth set is completed for a more conclusive assessment. Immunohistochemical (IHC) stains play a vital role in a pathologist's analysis of medical images, providing crucial diagnostic information for various diseases. Virtual staining from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained whole slide images (WSIs) allows the automatic production of other useful IHC stains without the expensive physical staining process. However, current virtual WSI generation methods based on tile-wise processing often suffer from inconsistencies in content, texture, and color at tile boundaries. These inconsistencies lead to artifacts that compromise image quality and potentially hinder accurate clinical assessment and diagnoses. To address this limitation, we propose a novel consistent WSI synthesis network, CC-WSI-Net, that extends GAN models to produce seamless synthetic whole slide images. Our CC-WSI-Net integrates a content- and color-consistency supervisor, ensuring consistency across tiles and facilitating the generation of seamless synthetic WSIs while ensuring Sox10 immunohistochemistry accuracy in melanocyte detection. We validate our method through extensive image-quality analyses, objective detection assessments, and a subjective survey with pathologists. By generating high-quality synthetic WSIs, our method opens doors for advanced virtual staining techniques with broader applications in research and clinical care.

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) convey energy at subwavelength depths along surfaces. Using interdigital transducers (IDTs) and opto-acousto-optic transducers (OAOTs), researchers have harnessed coherent SAWs with nanosecond periods and micrometer localization depth for various applications. However, the utilization of cutting-edge OAOTs produced through surface nanopatterning techniques has set the upper limit for coherent SAW frequencies below 100 GHz, constrained by factors such as the quality and pitch of the surface nanopattern, not to mention the electronic bandwidth limitations of the IDTs. In this context, unconventional optically-controlled nano-transducers based on cleaved superlattices (SLs) are here presented as an alternative solution. To demonstrate their viability, we conducted proof-of-concept experiments using ultrafast lasers in a pump-probe configuration on SLs made of alternating AlxGa1-xAs and AlyGa1-yAs layers with approximately 70 nm periodicity and cleaved along their growth direction to produce a periodic nanostructured surface. The acoustic vibrations, generated and detected by laser beams incident on the cleaved surface, span a range from 40 GHz to 70 GHz, corresponding to the generalized surface Rayleigh mode and bulk modes within the dispersion relation. This exploration shows that, in addition to SAWs, cleaved SLs offer the potential to observe surface-skimming longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves at GHz frequencies. In the shift towards human-centered manufacturing, our two-year longitudinal study investigates the real-world impact of deploying Cognitive Assistants (CAs) in factories. The CAs were designed to facilitate knowledge sharing among factory operators. Our investigation focused on smartphone-based voice assistants and LLM-powered chatbots, examining their usability and utility in a real-world factory setting. Based on the qualitative feedback we collected during the deployments of CAs at the factories, we conducted a thematic analysis to investigate the perceptions, challenges, and overall impact on workflow and knowledge sharing. Our results indicate that while CAs have the potential to significantly improve efficiency through knowledge sharing and quicker resolution of production issues, they also introduce concerns around workplace surveillance, the types of knowledge that can be shared, and shortcomings compared to human-to-human knowledge sharing. We prove a symmetric version of B\'ezout's theorem. More precisely, we show that the symmetric orbit type of a transverse intersection of complex symmetric hypersurfaces in projective space is determined by the degrees. In the projective plane, we fully classify the possible orbit types of such intersection loci using completely elementary methods. From this classification, we obtain strong restrictions on the number of real points in the intersection of real symmetric curves. Generative AI, in particular large transformer models, are increasingly driving HPC system design in science and industry. We analyze performance characteristics of such transformer models and discuss their sensitivity to the transformer type, parallelization strategy, and HPC system features (accelerators and interconnects). We utilize a performance model that allows us to explore this complex design space and highlight its key components. We find that different transformer types demand different parallelism and system characteristics at different training regimes. Large Language Models are performant with 3D parallelism and amplify network needs only at pre-training scales with reduced dependence on accelerator capacity and bandwidth. On the other hand, long-sequence transformers, representative of scientific foundation models, place a more uniform dependence on network and capacity with necessary 4D parallelism. Our analysis emphasizes the need for closer performance modeling of different transformer types keeping system features in mind and demonstrates a path towards this. Social media posts are frequently identified as a valuable source of open-source intelligence for disaster response, and pre-LLM NLP techniques have been evaluated on datasets of crisis tweets. We assess three commercial large language models (OpenAI GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5-flash-001 and Anthropic Claude-3-5 Sonnet) capabilities in zero-shot classification of short social media posts. In one prompt, the models are asked to perform two classification tasks: 1) identify if the post is informative in a humanitarian context; and 2) rank and provide probabilities for the post in relation to 16 possible humanitarian classes. The posts being classified are from the consolidated crisis tweet dataset, CrisisBench. Results are evaluated using macro, weighted, and binary F1-scores. The informative classification task, generally performed better without extra information, while for the humanitarian label classification providing the event that occurred during which the tweet was mined, resulted in better performance. Further, we found that the models have significantly varying performance by dataset, which raises questions about dataset quality.

We identify a $ 2 \to 3 $ exclusive process, where collinear factorisation is broken, namely the exclusive photoproduction of a $ \pi ^{0}\gamma $ pair with large invariant mass. This occurs because the process suffers from gluon exchanges trapped in the Glauber region. Using an explicit example, we show that the Glauber gluon, which is exchanged between a collinear spectator parton from the nucleon sector and a soft spectator parton from the outgoing pion, has both of its lightcone plus and minus components pinched. Therefore, it cannot be deformed to collinear/soft regions, as is often the case for processes that do factorise. We further confirm the leading power behaviour of the identified Glauber region, highlighting that this is the case although it relies on extracting a soft parton from the outgoing pion. We stress that the Glauber pinch for this process is of the leading power, due to the possibility of having two-gluon exchanges between the collinear nucleon sector and hard partonic scattering sub-process. In fact, the Glauber gluon that we identify is one of these two active gluons, and therefore, its effects are observed already at leading order. A direct consequence of our work is that collinear factorisation breaks in the same way for other $ 2 \to 3 $ exclusive processes, where two-gluon exchanges in the $ t $-channel are possible, like in the exclusive production of a photon pair from $ \pi ^{0} N $ collisions. However, we highlight that in cases where such two-gluon exchanges do not exist, like in the exclusive $ \pi ^{\pm}\gamma $ photoproduction, the Glauber exchanges that we discuss here do not occur, and hence they do not suffer from factorisation breaking effects., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, Presented by S. Neutral sodium (Na I) is an alkali metal with a favorable absorption cross section such that tenuous gases are easily illuminated at select transiting exoplanet systems. We examine both the time-averaged and time-series alkali spectral flux individually, over 4 nights at a hot Saturn system on a $\sim$ 2.8 day orbit about a Sun-like star WASP-49 A. Very Large Telescope/ESPRESSO observations are analyzed, providing new constraints. We recover the previously confirmed residual sodium flux uniquely when averaged, whereas night-to-night Na I varies by more than an order of magnitude. On HARPS/3.6-m Epoch II, we report a Doppler redshift at $v_{ \Gamma, \mathrm{NaD}} =$ +9.7 $\pm$ 1.6 km/s with respect to the planet's rest frame. Upon examining the lightcurves, we confirm night-to-night variability, on the order of $\sim$ 1-4 % in NaD rarely coinciding with exoplanet transit, not readily explained by stellar activity, starspots, tellurics, or the interstellar medium. Coincident with the $\sim$+10 km/s Doppler redshift, we detect a transient sodium absorption event dF$_{\mathrm{NaD}}$/F$_{\star}$ = 3.6 $\pm$ 1 % at a relative difference of $\Delta F_{\mathrm{NaD}} (t) \sim$ 4.4 $\pm$ 1 %, enduring $\Delta t_{\mathrm{NaD}} \gtrsim$ 40 minutes. Since exoplanetary alkali signatures are blueshifted due to the natural vector of radiation pressure, estimated here at roughly $\sim$ -5.7 km/s, the radial velocity is rather at +15.4 km/s, far larger than any known exoplanet system. Given that the redshift magnitude v$_{\Gamma}$ is in between the Roche limit and dynamically stable satellite orbits, the transient sodium may be a putative indication of a natural satellite orbiting WASP-49 A b., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters (2024 August 2)

Following significant progress in the visualization and characterization of hybrid superconducting-semiconducting systems, greatly propelled by reports of Majorana zero modes in nanowire devices, considerable attention has been devoted to investigating the electronic structure at the buried superconducting-semiconducting interface and the nature of the induced superconducting correlations. The properties of that interface and the structure of the electronic wave functions that occupy it determine the functionality and the topological nature of the induced superconducting state. Here, we introduce a novel hybrid platform for proximity-inducing superconductivity in InAs$_{0.6}$Sb$_{0.4}$ nanowires, leveraging a unique architecture and material combination. By dispersing these nanowires over a superconducting Indium film we exploit Indium's high critical temperature of 3.7~K and the anticipated high spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings of InAs$_{0.6}$Sb$_{0.4}$. This design preserves the pristine top facet of the nanowires, making it highly compatible with scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Using this architecture we demonstrate that the mechanical contact supports Cooper-pair transparency as high as 90\%, comparable with epitaxial interfaces. The anisotropic angular response to an applied magnetic field shows the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the parent superconductivity in the Indium film and the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the induced superconductivity in the nanowires. Entanglement plays a central role in fundamental tests and practical applications of quantum mechanics. Because entanglement is a feature unique to quantum systems, its observation provides evidence of the quantum nature on the system. Hence, if gravity can generate entanglement between quantum superpositions, this indicates that quantum amplitudes are field sources and gravity is a quantum phenomenon. I study the dual spin-one-half Stern-Gerlach interferometers proposed to test the quantum nature of gravity and show that the Pancharatnam phase displays features that provide a qualitative distinction between semiclassical and quantum signatures of gravity. The semiclassical evolution of the system is equivalent to that of a single interferometer (a two-level system) in an external field. In this case, a phase jump was observed, as expected from the geodesic rule, which dictates the noncyclic evolution of the superposition in the Bloch sphere. In contrast, in the quantum case, the two interferometers are coupled (two two-level systems) and I find that the phase is continuous., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

In fragile watermarking, a sensitive watermark is embedded in an object in a manner such that the watermark breaks upon tampering. This fragile process can be used to ensure the integrity and source of watermarked objects. While fragile watermarking for model integrity has been studied in classification models, image transformation/generation models have yet to be explored. We introduce a novel, trigger-based fragile model watermarking system for image transformation/generation networks that takes advantage of properties inherent to image outputs. For example, manifesting watermarks as specific visual patterns, styles, or anomalies in the generated content when particular trigger inputs are used. Our approach, distinct from robust watermarking, effectively verifies the model's source and integrity across various datasets and attacks, outperforming baselines by 94%. We conduct additional experiments to analyze the security of this approach, the flexibility of the trigger and resulting watermark, and the sensitivity of the watermarking loss on performance. We also demonstrate the applicability of this approach on two different tasks (1 immediate task and 1 downstream task). This is the first work to consider fragile model watermarking for image transformation/generation networks.

The generalization error (risk) of a supervised statistical learning algorithm quantifies its prediction ability on previously unseen data. Inspired by exponential tilting, Li et al. (2021) proposed the tilted empirical risk as a non-linear risk metric for machine learning applications such as classification and regression problems. In this work, we examine the generalization error of the tilted empirical risk. In particular, we provide uniform and information-theoretic bounds on the tilted generalization error, defined as the difference between the population risk and the tilted empirical risk, with a convergence rate of $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ where $n$ is the number of training samples. Furthermore, we study the solution to the KL-regularized expected tilted empirical risk minimization problem and derive an upper bound on the expected tilted generalization error with a convergence rate of $O(1/n)$., Comment: 49 pages

This paper proposes an optimization-based task and motion planning framework, named ``Logic Network Flow", to integrate signal temporal logic (STL) specifications into efficient mixed-binary linear programmings. In this framework, temporal predicates are encoded as polyhedron constraints on each edge of the network flow, instead of as constraints between the nodes as in the traditional Logic Tree formulation. Synthesized with Dynamic Network Flows, Logic Network Flows render a tighter convex relaxation compared to Logic Trees derived from these STL specifications. Our formulation is evaluated on several multi-robot motion planning case studies. Empirical results demonstrate that our formulation outperforms Logic Tree formulation in terms of computation time for several planning problems. As the problem size scales up, our method still discovers better lower and upper bounds by exploring fewer number of nodes during the branch-and-bound process, although this comes at the cost of increased computational load for each node when exploring branches.

For heterostructures formed by a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) placed in proximity to a superconductor (SC), no external magnetic field is necessary to drive the system into a phase supporting topological superconductivity with Majorana zero energy states, making them very attractive for the realization of non-Abelian states and fault-tolerant qubits. Despite considerable work investigating QSHI edge states, there is still an open question about their resilience to large magnetic fields and the implication of such resilience for the formation of a quasi-1D topological superconducting state. In this work, we investigate the transport properties of helical edge states in a QSHI-SC junction formed by a InAs/GaSb (15nm/5nm) double quantum well and a superconducting tantalum (Ta) constriction. We observe a robust conductance plateau up to 2 T, signaling resilient edge state transport. Such resilience is consistent with the Dirac point for the edge states being buried in the bulk valence band. Using a modified Landauer-Buttiker analysis, we find that the conductance is consistent with 98% Andreev reflection probability owing to the high transparency of the InAs/GaSb-Ta interface. We further theoretically show that a buried Dirac point does not affect the robustness of the quasi-1D topological superconducting phase, and favors the hybridization of Majorana Kramer pairs and fermionic modes in the QSHI resulting in extended MKP states, highlighting the subtle role of buried Dirac points in probing MKPs., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, and 2 tables

We give a condition for absolute continuity of self-similar measures in arbitrary dimensions. This allows us to construct the first explicit absolutely continuous examples of inhomogeneous self-similar measures in dimension one and two. In fact, for $d\geq 1$ and any given rotations in $O(d)$ acting irreducibly on $\mathbb{R}^d$ as well as any distinct translations, all having algebraic coefficients, we construct absolutely continuous self-similar measures with the given rotations and translations. We furthermore strengthen Varj\'u's result for Bernoulli convolutions, treat complex Bernoulli convolutions and in dimension $\geq 3$ improve the condition on absolute continuity by Lindenstrauss-Varj\'u. Electricity markets currently fail to incorporate preferences of buyers, treating polluting and renewable energy sources as having equal social benefit under a system of uniform clearing prices. Meanwhile, renewable energy is prone to curtailment due to transmission constraints, forcing grid operators to reduce or shut down renewable energy production despite its availability and need. This paper proposes a ``dual pricing mechanism" which allows buyers to bid both their willingness to pay for electricity, and additionally, their preference for green energy. Designed for use in deregulated electricity markets, this mechanism prioritizes the dispatch of more renewable energy sources according to consumer preferences. Traditional uniform clearing prices, which treat all energy sources equally, do not reflect the growing share of green energy in the power grid and the environmental values of consumers. By allowing load-serving entities to bid their willingness to pay for renewable energy directly into the clearing market, our proposed framework generates distinct pricing signals for green and ``black" electricity.

In the last few years, economic agent-based models have made the transition from qualitative models calibrated to match stylised facts to quantitative models for time series forecasting, and in some cases, their predictions have performed as well or better than those of standard models (see, e.g. Poledna et al. (2023a); Hommes et al. (2022); Pichler et al. (2022)). Here, we build on the model of Poledna et al., adding several new features such as housing markets, realistic synthetic populations of individuals with income, wealth and consumption heterogeneity, enhanced behavioural rules and market mechanisms, and an enhanced credit market. We calibrate our model for all 38 OECD member countries using state-of-the-art approximate Bayesian inference methods and test it by making out-of-sample forecasts. It outperforms both the Poledna and AR(1) time series models by a highly statistically significant margin. Our model is built within a platform we have developed, making it easy to build, run, and evaluate alternative models, which we hope will encourage future work in this area.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) due to their remarkable potential in various tasks integrating different modalities, such as image and text, as well as applications such as image captioning and visual question answering. However, such models still face challenges in accurately captioning and interpreting specific visual concepts and classes, particularly in domain-specific applications. We argue that integrating domain knowledge in the form of an ontology can significantly address these issues. In this work, as a proof of concept, we propose a new framework that combines ontology with MLLMs to classify images of plant diseases. Our method uses concepts about plant diseases from an existing disease ontology to query MLLMs and extract relevant visual concepts from images. Then, we use the reasoning capabilities of the ontology to classify the disease according to the identified concepts. Ensuring that the model accurately uses the concepts describing the disease is crucial in domain-specific applications. By employing an ontology, we can assist in verifying this alignment. Additionally, using the ontology's inference capabilities increases transparency, explainability, and trust in the decision-making process while serving as a judge by checking if the annotations of the concepts by MLLMs are aligned with those in the ontology and displaying the rationales behind their errors. Our framework offers a new direction for synergizing ontologies and MLLMs, supported by an empirical study using different well-known MLLMs.

Simulation studies are commonly used in methodological research for the empirical evaluation of data analysis methods. They generate artificial data sets under specified mechanisms and compare the performance of methods across conditions. However, simulation repetitions do not always produce valid outputs, e.g., due to non-convergence or other algorithmic failures. This phenomenon complicates the interpretation of results, especially when its occurrence differs between methods and conditions. Despite the potentially serious consequences of such "missingness", quantitative data on its prevalence and specific guidance on how to deal with it are currently limited. To this end, we reviewed 482 simulation studies published in various methodological journals and systematically assessed the prevalence and handling of missingness. We found that only 23.0% (111/482) of the reviewed simulation studies mention missingness, with even fewer reporting frequency (92/482 = 19.1%) or how it was handled (67/482 = 13.9%). We propose a classification of missingness and possible solutions. We give various recommendations, most notably to always quantify and report missingness, even if none was observed, to align missingness handling with study goals, and to share code and data for reproduction and reanalysis. Using a case study on publication bias adjustment methods, we illustrate common pitfalls and solutions.

We present a generative AI algorithm for addressing the challenging task of fast, accurate and robust statistical computation of three-dimensional turbulent fluid flows. Our algorithm, termed as GenCFD, is based on a conditional score-based diffusion model. Through extensive numerical experimentation with both incompressible and compressible fluid flows, we demonstrate that GenCFD provides very accurate approximation of statistical quantities of interest such as mean, variance, point pdfs, higher-order moments, while also generating high quality realistic samples of turbulent fluid flows and ensuring excellent spectral resolution. In contrast, ensembles of operator learning baselines which are trained to minimize mean (absolute) square errors regress to the mean flow. We present rigorous theoretical results uncovering the surprising mechanisms through which diffusion models accurately generate fluid flows. These mechanisms are illustrated with solvable toy models that exhibit the relevant features of turbulent fluid flows while being amenable to explicit analytical formulas., Comment: 71 pages, 30 figures

The deposition of a two-dimensional material on the surface of a three-dimensional crystal can generate superlattices with electronic properties modified through the proximity spin-orbit effect. In this study, we found that Kekul\'e graphene superlattices are obtained by placing graphene on Cd-terminated (001)-(1$\times$1) cadmium sulfide (CdS) surface. From an effective model of Kekul\'e superlattices, which is corroborated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we identified that the puckered surfqace of CdS modifies the on-site energies (staggered potential) and C-C bonds, giving rise to two possible $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ hexagonal superlattices, which are known as Kekul\'e-O graphene and Kekul\'e-Y with a quadratic band crossing point. Both Kekul\'e superlattices present spin-orbit coupling due to the interaction of graphene with the CdS surface. To guide the experimental realization of Kekul\'e superlattices based on graphene/CdS heterostructures, we simulate electron diffraction patterns, as well as images from High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy in the mode of High Angle Annular Dark Field (STEM-HAADF)., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Much of Earth's charismatic megafauna is endangered by human activities, particularly the rhino, which is at risk of extinction due to the poaching crisis in Africa. Monitoring rhinos' movement is crucial to their protection but has unfortunately proven difficult because rhinos are elusive. Therefore, instead of tracking rhinos, we propose the novel approach of mapping communal defecation sites, called middens, which give information about rhinos' spatial behavior valuable to anti-poaching, management, and reintroduction efforts. This paper provides the first-ever mapping of rhino midden locations by building classifiers to detect them using remotely sensed thermal, RGB, and LiDAR imagery in passive and active learning settings. As existing active learning methods perform poorly due to the extreme class imbalance in our dataset, we design MultimodAL, an active learning system employing a ranking technique and multimodality to achieve competitive performance with passive learning models with 94% fewer labels. Our methods could therefore save over 76 hours in labeling time when used on a similarly-sized dataset. Unexpectedly, our midden map reveals that rhino middens are not randomly distributed throughout the landscape; rather, they are clustered. Humans naturally obtain intuition about the interactions between and the stability of rigid objects by observing and interacting with the world. It is this intuition that governs the way in which we regularly configure objects in our environment, allowing us to build complex structures from simple, everyday objects. Robotic agents, on the other hand, traditionally require an explicit model of the world that includes the detailed geometry of each object and an analytical model of the environment dynamics, which are difficult to scale and preclude generalization. Instead, robots would benefit from an awareness of intuitive physics that enables them to similarly reason over the stable interaction of objects in their environment. Towards that goal, we propose StackGen, a diffusion model that generates diverse stable configurations of building blocks matching a target silhouette. To demonstrate the capability of the method, we evaluate it in a simulated environment and deploy it in the real setting using a robotic arm to assemble structures generated by the model.

Phylogenetic networks describe the evolution of a set of taxa for which reticulate events have occurred at some point in their evolutionary history. Of particular interest is when the evolutionary history between a set of just three taxa has a reticulate event. In molecular phylogenetics, substitution models can model the process of evolution at the genetic level, and the case of three taxa with a reticulate event can be modelled using a substitution model on a mixed graph called a 3-sunlet. We investigate a class of substitution models called group-based phylogenetic models on 3-sunlet networks. In particular, we investigate the discrete geometry of the parameter space and how this relates to the dimension of the phylogenetic variety associated to the model. This enables us to give a dimension formula for this variety for general group-based models when the order of the group is odd.

Discontinuous reception (DRX) is a key technology for reducing the energy consumption of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices. Specifically, DRX allows the devices to operate in a low-power mode when no data reception is scheduled, and its effectiveness depends on the proper configuration of the DRX parameters. In this paper, we characterize the DRX process departing from a semi-Markov chain modeling. We detail two ways to set DRX parameters to minimize the device power consumption while meeting a mean delay constraint. The first method exhaustively searches for the optimal configuration. In contrast, the second method uses a low-complexity metaheuristic to find a sub-optimal configuration, thus considering ideal and practical DRX configurations. Notably, within the DRX parameters, the inactivity timer (IT) is a caution time that specifies how long a device remains active after the last information exchange. Traditionally, a device implementing DRX will restart the IT after each data reception as a precedent to a low-power mode. The usual approach lies in restarting the IT whenever new data is received during this cautious period, which might sometimes needlessly extend the active time. Herein, we propose a more efficient method in which the transmit base station (BS) explicitly indicates restarting the timer through the control channel only when appropriate. The decision is taken based on the BS's knowledge about its buffer status. We consider Poisson and bursty traffic models, which are typical in IIoT setups, and verify the suitability of our proposal for reducing the energy consumption of the devices without significantly compromising the communication latency through extensive numerical simulations. We performed time- and polarization-resolved extreme ultraviolet momentum microscopy on topological Dirac semimetal candidate 1T-ZrTe$_2$. Excited states band mapping uncovers the previously inaccessible linear dispersion of the Dirac cone above the Fermi level. We study the orbital texture of bands using linear dichroism in photoelectron angular distributions. These observations provide hints on the topological character of 1T-ZrTe$_2$. Time-, energy- and momentum-resolved nonequilibrium carrier dynamics reveal that intra- and inter-band scattering processes play a capital role in the relaxation mechanism, leading to multivalley electron-hole accumulation near the Fermi level. We also show that electrons' inverse lifetime has a linear dependence on their binding energy. Our time- and polarization-resolved XUV photoemission results shed light on the excited state electronic structure of 1T-ZrTe$_2$ and provide valuable insights into the relatively unexplored field of quantum-state-resolved ultrafast dynamics in 3D topological Dirac semimetals.

Recognizing the challenges with current tornado warning systems, we investigate alternative approaches. In particular, we present a database engi-neered system that integrates information from heterogeneous rich data sources, including climatology data for tornadoes and data just before a tornado warning. The system aids in predicting tornado occurrences by identifying the data points that form the basis of a tornado warning. Evaluation on US data highlights the advantages of using a classification forecasting recurrent neural network (RNN) model. The results highlight the effectiveness of our database engineered system for big data analytics on tornado climatology-especially, in accurately predict-ing tornado lead-time, magnitude, and location, contributing to the development of sustainable cities.

Active perception enables robots to dynamically gather information by adjusting their viewpoints, a crucial capability for interacting with complex, partially observable environments. In this paper, we present AP-VLM, a novel framework that combines active perception with a Vision-Language Model (VLM) to guide robotic exploration and answer semantic queries. Using a 3D virtual grid overlaid on the scene and orientation adjustments, AP-VLM allows a robotic manipulator to intelligently select optimal viewpoints and orientations to resolve challenging tasks, such as identifying objects in occluded or inclined positions. We evaluate our system on two robotic platforms: a 7-DOF Franka Panda and a 6-DOF UR5, across various scenes with differing object configurations. Our results demonstrate that AP-VLM significantly outperforms passive perception methods and baseline models, including Toward Grounded Common Sense Reasoning (TGCSR), particularly in scenarios where fixed camera views are inadequate. The adaptability of AP-VLM in real-world settings shows promise for enhancing robotic systems' understanding of complex environments, bridging the gap between high-level semantic reasoning and low-level control.
