Three-dimensional geological and groundwater flow models of a submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) site at Hanko (Finland), in the northern Baltic Sea, have been developed to provide a geological framework and a tool for the estimation of SGD rates into the coastal sea. The dataset used consists of gravimetric, ground-penetrating radar and shallow seismic surveys, drill logs, groundwater level monitoring data, field observations, and a LiDAR digital elevation model. The geological model is constrained by the local geometry of late Pleistocene and Holocene deposits, including till, glacial coarse-grained and fine-grained sediments, post-glacial mud, and coarse-grained littoral and aeolian deposits. The coarse-grained aquifer sediments form a shallow shore platform that extends approximately 100–250 m offshore, where the unit slopes steeply seawards and becomes covered by glacial and post-glacial muds. Groundwater flow preferentially takes place in channel-fill outwash coarse-grained sediments and sand and gravel interbeds that provide conduits of higher hydraulic conductivity, and have led to the formation of pockmarks on the seafloor in areas of thin or absent mud cover. The groundwater flow model estimated the average SGD rate per square meter of the seafloor at 0.22 cm day−1 in autumn 2017. The average SGD rate increased to 0.28 cm day−1 as a response to an approximately 30% increase in recharge in spring 2020. Sensitivity analysis shows that recharge has a larger influence on SGD rate compared with aquifer hydraulic conductivity and the seafloor conductance. An increase in recharge in this region will cause more SGD into the Baltic Sea.

The impact of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) on coastal sea biogeochemistry and water quality has been demonstrated in many recent studies. However, the isotopic behavior of terrestrially-derived solutes in the groundwater-seawater mixing zone of coastal aquifers (the subterranean estuary, STE) has been less studied, although solutes such as Li, S and Sr are commonly used as tracers of weathering and biogeochemical processes taking place in aquifers and in coastal sea sediments.This study investigated the behavior of 87Sr/86Sr, δ7Li and δ34S in the STE and three seafloor pockmarks with different degrees of groundwater influence, as constrained based on δ2H and δ18O, at the Hanko SGD site in Finland, in the northern Baltic Sea. These data were supplemented by groundwater and seawater measurements. 87Sr/86Sr showed non-conservative behavior with values elevated up to 0.0167 units above that expected for the conservative mixing in the STE and in the most groundwater-dominated pockmark (up to 100% groundwater), but the deviation was masked by much stronger seawater contributions in the other pockmarks. δ7Li values were shifted down to −1.75‰ below that expected for conservative mixing in the STE and in groundwater-influenced pockmark porewaters, whereas δ7Li was elevated up to 1.53‰ in the porewater of organic-rich mud in a pockmark where groundwater influence had ceased. δ34S deviated between −16.78‰ and 10.51‰ from the conservative mixing in the STE and porewaters of groundwater-influenced pockmarks, while δ34S was elevated up to 16.85‰ in the porewater of the pockmark with no groundwater influence.In the Hanko STE, the isotopic fractionation of Sr and Li was explained by chemical weathering of silicate minerals and clay minerals, respectively, whereas δ34S was fractionated by complex interactions of microbial sulfate reduction and sulfide reoxidation. In the pockmark porewater with no groundwater influence, δ7Li and δ34S isotopes were enriched in the heavier isotopes as a consequence of early-diagenetic mineral formation in the organic-rich muds. The measured 87Sr/86Sr and δ7Li were higher than the previously estimated isotopic compositions of their groundwater-derived fluxes to the oceans, and partly higher than the global riverine values. The heterogeneity in the seafloor biogeochemical environment, caused by the focusing of SGD in pockmarks, resulted in strongly variable δ34S of groundwater-derived S flux to the coastal ocean at a spatial scale of a few hundreds of meters.Original publication: Ikonen, J., Hendriksson, N., Luoma, S., Lahaye, Y. and Virtasalo, J. The study illustrates the critical role of accurate geological structural mapping to delineate crystalline aquifer zones more prone to high health risk due to elevated dissolved As in drinking wells. The analysis revisits the results from more than 1200 groundwater samples collected over ten years from domestic wells across the Tampere region (Finland). It is demonstrated that the highest dissolved As concentrations in the region (up to 2230 μg/L) are exclusively found near major faults and deformation zones (FDZs) detected via geophysical and geological surveys, and that a clear correlation exists between dissolved concentrations and the distance from the FDZs (r). Almost all values exceeding the drinking water limit (10 μg/L) occur at r < 8 km, while concentrations above 100 μg/L occur at r < 4 km. Solid-phase As concentrations in bedrock show less dependency on FDZ than aqueous concentrations. This behavior is explained considering different mechanisms, which include enhanced sulfide oxidation and fracture connectivity, promoting preferential transport of dissolved As to FDZs and mixing of waters from different redox zones, mobilizing preferentially As(III) or As(V). Fe hydro-oxides may also precipitate/dissolve preferentially because of FDZs, while residence time may influence the contact time between water and As-bearing minerals. It is concluded that the accurate mapping of FDZs, and in general of structural geology, provides an important preliminary information to identify where localized, site-specific characterization of hydrogeology and geochemistry is more urgent to reduce As-related health risk from groundwater intake. The ability of a coastal settlement to adapt to climate change is largely dependent upon access to a range of resources, which many coastal towns and small cities lack. Coastal small towns of less than 10,000 are therefore at a significant disadvantage compared to larger settlements when it comes to adaptation. One way to begin to overcome this disadvantage is to compare coastal small towns in order to identify efficiencies and support knowledge sharing. In this article we present and analyse five case studies of coastal small towns: Fuvemeh, Ghana; Kiyu, Uruguay; Hanko, Finland; Lemvig, Denmark; and Nome, Alaska, USA. A number of key outcomes and lessons were identified which highlights the need for a formal network of international coastal small towns to encourage and develop knowledge sharing practices going forward. A further lesson is the importance of using a range of indicators in order to establish the regional/national importance of a town. Basing this solely on population size can result in an erroneous interpretation of the significance (and therefore adaptive capacity) of a coastal small town. Finally, despite many barriers to adaptation in coastal small towns, being small offers some potential advantages, such as the possibility of being able to form a community consensus more easily, using 3D visualisations for adaptation planning, and having managed realignment as a realistic management option. It is imperative that climate change resilience in coastal small towns is increased by focussing on overcoming barriers and developing appropriate adaptation approaches by governments, non-governmental organisations, business, and researchers.

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has been implicated as a significant source of nutrients and other potentially harmful substances to coastal sea. Although the number of reported SGD sites has increased recently, their stratigraphical architecture and aquifer geometry are rarely investigated in detail. This study analyses a multifaceted dataset of offshore seismic sub-bottom profiles, multibeam and sidescan sonar images of the seafloor, radon measurements of seawater and groundwater, and onshore ground-penetrating radar and refraction seismic profiles in order to reconstruct the detailed stratigraphical architecture of a high-latitude SGD site, which is connected to the Late-Pleistocene First Salpausselkä ice-marginal formation on the Hanko Peninsula in Finland. The studied location is characterized by a sandy beach, a sandy shore platform that extends 100–250 m seaward sloping gently to ca. 4 m water depth, and a steep slope to ca. 17 m water depth within ca. 50 m distance. The onshore radar and offshore seismic profiles are correlated based on unconformities, following the allostratigraphical approach. The aquifer is hosted in the distal sand-dominated part of an ice-contact subaqueous fan foreset. It is interpreted that gravel and coarse sand interbeds and lenses in the distal foreset, and, potentially, coarse couplet layers in the overlying glaciolacustrine rhythmite, provide conduits for localized groundwater flow. The SGD takes place predominantly through pockmarks on the seafloor, which are documented on the shore platform slope by multibeam and sidescan sonar images. Elevated radon-222 activity concentrations measured 1 m above seafloor confirm SGD from two pockmarks with fine sand surface sediment, whereas there was no discharge from a third pockmark that was covered with a thin organic-rich mud layer. The thorough understanding of the local stratigraphy and the geometry and composition of the aquifer that have been acquired in this study are crucial for successful hydrogeological modeling and flux studies at the SGD site.

The groundwater in a shallow, unconfined, low-lying coastal aquifer in Santala, southern Finland, was chemically characterised by integrating multivariate statistical approaches, principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), based on the stable isotopes δ2H and δ18O, hydrogeochemistry and field monitoring data. PCA and HCA yielded similar results and classified groundwater samples into six distinct groups that revealed the factors controlling temporal and spatial variations in the groundwater geochemistry, such as the geology, anthropogenic sources from human activities, climate and surface water. High temporal variation in groundwater chemistry directly corresponded to precipitation. With an increase in precipitation, KMnO4 consumption, EC, alkalinity and Ca concentrations also increased in most wells, while Fe, Al, Mn and SO4 were occasionally increased during spring after the snowmelt under specific geological conditions. The continued increase in NO3 and metal concentrations in groundwater indicates the potential contamination risk to the aquifer. Stable isotopes of δ18O and δ2H indicate groundwater recharge directly from meteoric water, with an insignificant contribution from lake water, and no seawater intrusion into the aquifer. Groundwater geochemistry suggests that local seawater intrusion is temporarily able to take place in the sulfate reduction zone along the freshwater and seawater mixed zone in the low-lying coastal area, but the contribution of seawater was found to be very low. The influence of lake water could be observed from higher levels of KMnO4 consumption in wells near the lake. The integration of PCA and HCA with conventional classification of groundwater types, as well as with the hydrogeochemical data, provided useful tools to identify the vulnerable groundwater areas representing the impacts of both natural and human activities on water quality and the understanding of complex groundwater flow system for the aquifer vulnerability assessment and groundwater management in the future.

Concern over arsenic (As)-rich drinking water has gained worldwide attention since the 1990s, when the problem was discovered in West Bengal in India and in Bangladesh. Since then, authorities and research institutes have focused on risk assessment and management for As in Finland. Nationwide geochemical mapping projects determined background levels and revealed regions with a higher than average As content in bedrock and soil. Approximately 10% of the citizens in Finland use drinking water from private wells. Groundwater, especially from drilled bedrock wells, may contain As concentrations higher than 10 μg/L, the European Union quality guideline for As in drinking water. Here, we present the outcome of two European Union projects, RAMAS and ASROCKS, which based their conclusions on nationwide databases and thousands of samples. Both RAMAS and ASROCKS focused on the Tampere-Hame region of Southern Finland, where bedrock and soil contain more As than in other parts of Finland on average. Over 1000 groundwater samples revealed that drilled bedrock wells may contain As-rich water in certain geological units. Naturally occurring As in bedrock and soil may also cause the mobilization of As during rock aggregate production and construction activities, potentially impacting on groundwater aquifers, surface waters, and biota. Arsenic concentrations in aggregate production and construction exceeded the regional background levels in some bedrock and aggregate product samples, but during leaching tests As concentrations were found to be low. Based on the results, risk management tools were revised and guidelines for the rock aggregate industry were established in cooperation with authorities, companies, and other stakeholders. To our knowledge, the guidelines established were the first in the world. The guidelines for As for the aggregate and construction industries can be applied in other countries and adapted to local conditions.

A shallow unconfined low-lying coastal aquifer in southern Finland surrounded by the Baltic Sea is vulnerable to changes in groundwater recharge, sea-level rise and human activities. Assessment of the intrinsic vulnerability of groundwater under climate scenarios was performed for the aquifer area by utilising the results of a published study on the impacts of climate change on groundwater recharge and sea-level rise on groundwater–seawater interaction. Three intrinsic vulnerability mapping methods, the aquifer vulnerability index (AVI), a modified SINTACS and GALDIT, were applied and compared. According to the results, the degree of groundwater vulnerability is greatly impacted by seasonal variations in groundwater recharge during the year, and also varies depending on the climate-change variability in the long term. The groundwater is potentially highly vulnerable to contamination from sources on the ground surface during high groundwater recharge rates after snowmelt, while a high vulnerability to seawater intrusion could exist when there is a low groundwater recharge rate in dry season. The AVI results suggest that a change in the sea level will have an insignificant impact on groundwater vulnerability compared with the results from the modified SINTACS and GALDIT. The modified SINTACS method could be used as a guideline for the groundwater vulnerability assessment of glacial and deglacial deposits in inland aquifers, and in combination with GALDIT, it could provide a useful tool for assessing groundwater vulnerability to both contamination from sources on the ground surface and to seawater intrusion for shallow unconfined low-lying coastal aquifers under future climate-change conditions.
