We investigate the gravitational settling of a long, model elastic filament in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We show that the flow produces a strongly fluctuating settling velocity, whose mean is moderately enhanced over the still-fluid terminal velocity, and whose variance has a power-law dependence on the filament's weight but is surprisingly unaffected by its elasticity. In contrast, the tumbling of the filament is shown to be closely coupled to its stretching, and manifests as a Poisson process with a tumbling time that increases with the elastic relaxation time of the filament., 6 pages, 5 figures

A hydrodynamic model of active, low Reynolds number suspensions, shows the emergence of an asymptotic state with a universal spectral scaling and non-Gaussian (intermittent) fluctuations in the velocity field. Such states arise when these systems are pushed beyond a critical level of activity and show features akin to high Reynolds number, inertial turbulence. We provide compelling numerical and analytical evidence for the existence of such a transition at a critical value of activity and further show that the maximally chaotic states are tied to this transition., 8 Pages, 4 Figures

Turbulence is unique in its appeal across physics, mathematics and engineering. And yet a microscopic theory, starting from the basic equations of hydrodynamics, still eludes us. In the last decade or so, new directions at the interface of physics and mathematics have emerged, which strengthens the hope of ‘solving’ one of the oldest problems in the natural sciences. This two-part theme issue unites these new directions on a common platform emphasizing the underlying complementarity of the physicists’ and the mathematicians’ approaches to a remarkably challenging problem. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Scaling the turbulence edifice (part 1)’.

We investigate the scaling form of appropriate time-scales extracted from time-dependent correlation functions in rotating, turbulent flows. In particular, we obtain precise estimates of the dynamic exponents $z_p$, associated with the time-scales, and their relation with the more commonly measured equal-time exponents $\zeta_p$. Linking thermodynamic variables like temperature $T$ and the measure of chaos, the Lyapunov exponents $\lambda$, is a question of fundamental importance in many-body systems. By using nonlinear fluid equations in one and three dimensions, we prove that in thermalised flows $\lambda \propto \sqrt{T}$, in agreement with results from frustrated spin systems. This reveals an underlying universality and provides evidence for recent conjectures on the thermal scaling of $\lambda$. Bacterial swarms display intriguing dynamical states like active turbulence. Using a hydrodynamic model we now show that such dense active suspensions manifest super-diffusion, via L\'evy walks, which masquerades as a crossover from ballistic to diffusive scaling in measurements of mean-squared-displacements, and is tied to the emergence of hitherto undetected oscillatory streaks in the flow. We show that Lagrangian measurements in active turbulence bear imprints of turbulent and anomalous streaky hydrodynamics leading to a self-selection of persistent trajectories - Levy walks - over diffusive ones. This emergent dynamical heterogeneity results in a super-diffusive first passage distribution which could lead to biologically advantageous motility. We then go beyond single-particle statistics to show that for the pair-dispersion problem as well, active flows are at odds with inertial turbulence. Finite-dimensional, inviscid equations of hydrodynamics, such as the zero-viscosity, one-dimensional Burgers equation or the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equation, obtained through a Fourier-Galerkin projection, thermalise---mediated through structures known as tygers [Ray et al., Phys. Rev. E 84, 016301 (2011)]---with an energy equipartition. Therefore, numerical solutions of inviscid partial differential equations, which typically have to be Galerkin-truncated, show a behaviour at odds with the parent equation. We examine the dynamics of small anisotropic particles (spheroids) sedimenting through homogeneous isotropic turbulence using direct numerical simulations and theory. The gravity-induced inertial torque acting on sub-Kolmogorov spheroids leads to pronouncedly non-Gaussian orientation distributions localized about the broadside-on(to gravity) orientation. Orientation distributions and average settling velocities are obtained over a wide range of spheroid aspect ratios, Stokes and Froude numbers. Orientational moments from the simulations compare well with analytical predictions in the inertialess rapid-settling limit, with both exhibiting a non-monotonic dependence on spheroid aspect ratio. The statistics of the deformation and breakup of neutrally buoyant sub-Kolmogorov ellipsoidal drops is investigated via Lagrangian simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The mean lifetime of a drop is also studied as a function of the initial drop size and the capillary number. A vector model of drop previously introduced by Olbricht, Rallison and Leal [J. This entry is aimed at describing cloud physics with an emphasis on fluid dynamics. As is inevitable for a review of an enormously complicated problem, it is highly selective and reflects of the authors' focus. The range of scales involved, and the relevant physics at each scale is described. Particular attention is given to droplet dynamics and growth, and turbulence with and without thermodynamics.

We revisit the issue of Lagrangian irreversibility in the context of recent results [Xu, et al., PNAS, 111, 7558 (2014)] on flight-crash events in turbulent flows and show how extreme events in the Eulerian dissipation statistics are related to the statistics of power-fluctuations for tracer trajectories. Surprisingly, we find that particle trajectories in intense dissipation zones are dominated by energy gains sharper than energy losses, contrary to flight-crashes, through a pressure-gradient driven take-off phenomenon. Our conclusions are rationalised by analysing data from simulations of three-dimensional intermittent turbulence, as well as from non-intermittent decimated flows. Lagrangian irreversibility is found to persist even in the latter case, wherein fluctuations of the dissipation rate are shown to be relatively mild and to follow probability distribution functions with exponential tails., 9 pages, 6 figures

The interplay of inertia and elasticity is shown to have a significant impact on the transport of filamentary objects, modelled by bead-spring chains, in a two-dimensional turbulent flow. We show how elastic interactions amongst inertial beads result in a non-trivial sampling of the flow, ranging from entrapment within vortices to preferential sampling of straining regions. This behavior is quantified as a function of inertia and elasticity and is shown to be very different from free, non-interacting heavy particles, as well as inertialess chains [Picardo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 244501 (2018)]. In addition, by considering two limiting cases, of a heavy-headed and a uniformly-inertial chain, we illustrate the critical role played by the mass distribution of such extended objects in their turbulent transport., 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the role of intense vortical structures, similar to those in a turbulent flow, in enhancing collisions (and coalescences) which lead to the formation of large aggregates in particle-laden flows. By using a Burgers vortex model, we show, in particular, that vortex stretching significantly enhances sharp inhomogeneities in spatial particle densities, related to the rapid ejection of particles from intense vortices. Furthermore our work shows how such spatial clustering leads to an enhancement of collision rates and extreme statistics of collisional velocities. We also study the role of poly-disperse suspensions in this enhancement. Our work uncovers an important principle which, {if valid for realistic turbulent flows, may be a factor in} how small nuclei water droplets in warm clouds can aggregate to sizes large enough to trigger rain., 9 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the Lagrangian statistics of three-dimensional rotating turbulent flows through direct numerical simulations. We find that the emergence of coherent vortical structures because of the Coriolis force leads to a suppression of the "flight-crash" events reported by Xu, et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. (U.S.A) 111, 7558 (2014)]. We perform systematic studies to trace the origins of this suppression in the emergent geometry of the flow and show why such a Lagrangian measure of irreversibility may fail in the presence of rotation., The manuscript contains 6 pages and 7 figures

We investigate the connection between the inertial range and the dissipation range statistics of rotating turbulence through detailed simulations of a helical shell model and a multifractal analysis. In particular, by using the latter, we find an explicit relation between the (anomalous) scaling exponents of equal-time structure functions in the inertial range in terms of the generalised dimensions associated with the energy dissipation rate. This theoretical prediction is validated by detailed simulations of a helical shell model for various strengths of rotation from where the statistics of dissipation rate, and thus the generalised dimensions, as well as the inertial range, in particular the anomalous scaling exponents, are extracted. Our work also underlines a surprisingly good agreement---such as in the spatial structure of the energy dissipation rates and the decrease in inertial range intermittency with increasing strengths of rotation---between solutions of the Navier--Stokes equation in a rotating frame with those obtained from low-dimensional, dynamical systems such as the shell model which are not explicitly anisotropic. Finally, we perform direct numerical simulations of the Navier--Stokes equation, with the Coriolis force incorporated, to confirm the robustness of the conclusions drawn from our multifractal and shell model studies., Comment: 18 pages with 7 figures. We show and explain how a long bead-spring chain, immersed in a homogeneous, isotropic turbulent flow, preferentially samples vortical flow structures. We begin with an elastic, extensible chain which is stretched out by the flow, up to inertial-range scales. This filamentary object, which is known to preferentially sample the circular coherent vortices of two-dimensional (2D) turbulence, is shown here to also preferentially sample the intense, tubular, vortex filaments of 3D turbulence. In the 2D case, the chain collapses into a tracer inside vortices. In 3D, on the contrary, the chain is extended even in vortical regions, which suggests that it follows axially-stretched tubular vortices by aligning with their axes. This physical picture is confirmed by examining the relative sampling behaviour of the individual beads, and by additional studies on an inextensible chain with adjustable bending-stiffness. A highly-flexible, inextensible chain also shows preferential sampling in 3D, provided it is longer than the dissipation scale, but not much longer than the vortex tubes. This is true also for 2D turbulence, where a long inextensible chain can occupy vortices by coiling into them. When the chain is made inflexible, however, coiling is prevented and the extent of preferential sampling in 2D is considerably reduced. In 3D, on the contrary, bending stiffness has no effect, because the chain does not need to coil in order to thread a vortex tube and align with its axis., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The role of the spatial structure of a turbulent flow in enhancing particle collision rates in suspensions is an open question. We show and quantify, as a function of particle inertia, the correlation between the multiscale structures of turbulence and particle collisions: Straining zones contribute predominantly to rapid head-on collisions compared to vortical regions. We also discover the importance of vortex-strain worm-rolls, which goes beyond ideas of preferential concentration and may explain the rapid growth of aggregates in natural processes, such as the initiation of rain in warm clouds., 10 pages, 5 figures

We find that localised perturbations in a chaotic classical many-body system-- the classical Heisenberg We find that the effects of a localised perturbation in a chaotic classical many-body system--the classical Heisenberg chain at infinite temperature--spread ballistically with a finite speed even when the local spin dynamics is diffusive. We study two complementary aspects of this butterfly effect: the rapid growth of the perturbation, and its simultaneous ballistic (light-cone) spread, as characterised by the Lyapunov exponents and the butterfly speed respectively. We connect this to recent studies of the out-of-time-ordered commutators (OTOC), which have been proposed as an indicator of chaos in a quantum system. We provide a straightforward identification of the OTOC with a natural correlator in our system and demonstrate that many of its interesting qualitative features are present in the classical system. Finally, by analysing the scaling forms, we relate the growth, spread and propagation of the perturbation with the growth of one-dimensional interfaces described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. Simulations of Lagrangian turbulence with Fourier components removed (decimation) show no effect on the level of chaos but an emergent time reversality as indicated by the ratio of Lyapunov exponents shown in the figure.

We revisit the two-dimensional SABRA model, in the light of recent results of Frisch {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 074501 (2012)] and examine, systematically, the interplay between equilibrium states and cascade (turbulent) solutions, characterised by a single parameter $b$, via equal-time and time-dependent structure functions. We calculate the static and dynamic exponents across the equipartition as well as turbulent regimes which are consistent with earlier studies. Our results indicate the absence of a sharp transition from equipartition to turbulent states. We investigate the effect of cooperative interactions in an ensemble of microorganisms, modelled as self-propelled disk-like and rod-like particles, in a three-dimensional turbulent flow to show flocking as an emergent phenomenon. Building on the work by Choudhary, et al. [Europhys. Lett. 112, 24005 (2015)] for two-dimensional systems, and combining ideas from active matter and turbulent transport, we show that non-trivial correlations between the flow and individual dynamics are essential for the microorganisms to flock in, for example, a turbulent three-dimensional, marine environment. Our results may have implications especially in the modelling of artificial microswimmers in a hostile environment.

A string of tracers, interacting elastically, in a turbulent flow is shown to have a dramatically different behaviour when compared to the non-interacting case. In particular, such an elastic chain shows strong preferential sampling of the turbulent flow unlike the usual tracer limit: an elastic chain is trapped in the vortical regions and not the straining ones. The degree of preferential sampling and its dependence on the elasticity of the chain is quantified via the Okubo-Weiss parameter. We investigate the effects of a two-dimensional, incompressible, turbulent flow on mono-disperse soft granular particles and show the emergence of a crystalline phase due to the interplay of Stokesian drag (measured through the Stokes number) and short-range inter-particle interactions. We quantify this phase through the bond order parameter and local density fluctuations and find a sharp transition between the crystalline and non-crystalline phase as a function of the Stokes number. Furthermore, the nature of preferential concentration, as characterised by the radial distribution function and the correlation dimension $D_2$, is significantly different from that of particle-laden flows in the absence of repulsive potentials., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In quantum systems, signatures of multifractality are rare. They have been found only in the multiscaling of eigenfunctions at critical points. Here we demonstrate multifractality in the magnetic field-induced universal conductance fluctuations of the conductance in a quantum condensed matter system, namely, high-mobility single-layer graphene field-effect transistors. This multifractality decreases as the temperature increases or as doping moves the system away from the Dirac point. Our measurements and analysis present evidence for an incipient Anderson-localization near the Dirac point as the most plausible cause for this multifractality. Our experiments suggest that multifractality in the scaling behavior of local eigenfunctions are reflected in macroscopic transport coefficients. We conjecture that an incipient Anderson-localization transition may be the origin of this multifractality. It is possible that multifractality is ubiquitous in transport properties of low-dimensional systems. Indeed, our work suggests that we should look for multifractality in transport in other low-dimensional quantum condensed-matter systems. Multifractality is ubiquitous in classical systems but rare in quantum ones. Here the authors present observations demonstrating that universal conductance fluctuations in high-mobility single-layer graphene field-effect transistors are multifractal and may arise from Anderson-localization.

We study the rotational dynamics of {\it inertial} disks and rods in three-dimensional, homogeneous isotropic turbulence. In particular, we show how the alignment and the decorrelation time-scales of such spheroids depend, critically, on both the level of inertia and the aspect ratio of these particles. These results illustrate the effect of inertia---which leads to a preferential sampling of the local flow geometry---on the statistics of both disks and rods in a turbulent flow. Our results are important for a variety of natural and industrial settings where the turbulent transport of asymmetric, spheroidal inertial particles is ubiquitous., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

In this study, we examine the intriguing connection between turbulence and equilibrium statistical mechanics. There are several recent works which emphasize this connection. Thus in the last few years, the first manifestations of the thermalization, predicted by T D Lee in 1952, was seen and a theoretical understanding of this was developed through detailed studies of finite-dimensional, Galerkin-truncated equations of hydrodynamics. Furthermore, the idea of the Galerkin truncation can be generalized for studying turbulence in non-integer (fractal) dimensions to yield a new, critical dimension with an equilibrium Gibbs state coinciding with a Kolmogorov spectrum. In this paper, we discuss these very exciting and recent developments in turbulence as well as open problems for the future.

We compare the collision rates and the typical collisional velocities amongst droplets of different sizes in a poly-disperse suspension advected by two- and three-dimensional turbulent flows. We show that the collision rate is enhanced in the transient phase for droplets for which the size-ratios between the colliding pairs is large as well as obtain precise theoretical estimates of the dependence of the impact velocity of particles-pairs on their relative sizes. These analytical results are validated against data from our direct numerical simulations. Our results suggest that an explanation of the rapid growth of droplets, e.g., in warm clouds, may well lie in the dynamics of particles in transient phases where increased collision rates between large and small particles could result in runaway process. Our results are also important to model coalescence or fragmentation (depending on the impact velocities) and will be crucial, for example, in obtaining precise coalescence kernels in such systems.

We use the one-dimensional Burgers equation to illustrate the effect of replacing the standard Laplacian dissipation term by a more general function of the Laplacian -- of which hyperviscosity is the best known example -- in equations of hydrodynamics. We analyze the asymptotic structure of solutions in the Fourier space at very high wave-numbers by introducing an approach applicable to a wide class of hydrodynamical equations whose solutions are calculated in the limit of vanishing Reynolds numbers from algebraic recursion relations involving iterated integrations. We give a detailed analysis of their analytic structure for two different types of dissipation: a hyperviscous and an exponentially growing dissipation term. Our results, obtained in the limit of vanishing Reynolds numbers, are validated by high-precision numerical simulations at non-zero Reynolds numbers. We then study the bottleneck problem, an intermediate asymptotics phenomenon, which in the case of the Burgers equation arises when ones uses dissipation terms (such as hyperviscosity) growing faster at high wave-numbers than the standard Laplacian dissipation term. A linearized solution of the well-known boundary layer limit of the Burgers equation involving two numerically determined parameters gives a good description of the bottleneck region., Comment: 23 pages; 6 figures

We study small-scale and high-frequency turbulent fluctuations in three-dimensional flows under Fourier-mode reduction. The Navier-Stokes equations are evolved on a restricted set of modes, obtained as a projection on a fractal or homogeneous Fourier set. We find a strong sensitivity (reduction) of the high-frequency variability of the Lagrangian velocity fluctuations on the degree of mode decimation, similarly to what is already reported for Eulerian statistics. This is quantified by a tendency towards a quasi-Gaussian statistics, i.e., to a reduction of intermittency, at all scales and frequencies. This can be attributed to a strong depletion of vortex filaments and of the vortex stretching mechanism. Nevertheless, we found that Eulerian and Lagrangian ensembles are still connected by a dimensional bridge-relation which is independent of the degree of Fourier-mode decimation.

We show that, at low inertia and large elasticity, shell models of viscoelastic fluids develop a chaotic behaviour with properties similar to those of elastic turbulence. The low dimensionality of shell models allows us to explore a wide range both in polymer concentration and in Weissenberg number. Our results demonstrate that the physical mechanisms at the origin of elastic turbulence do not rely on the boundary conditions or on the geometry of the mean flow., Comment: 6 pages; 8 figures

Extended Self-Similarity (ESS), a procedure that remarkably extends the range of scaling for structure functions in Navier--Stokes turbulence and thus allows improved determination of intermittency exponents, has never been fully explained. We show that ESS applies to Burgers turbulence at high Reynolds numbers and we give the theoretical explanation of the numerically observed improved scaling at both the infrared and ultraviolet end, in total a gain of about three quarters of a decade: there is a reduction of subdominant contributions to scaling when going from the standard structure function representation to the ESS representation. We conjecture that a similar situation holds for three-dimensional incompressible turbulence and suggest ways of capturing subdominant contributions to scaling., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, submitted to J. We present the first study of the multiscaling of time-dependent velocity and magnetic-field structure functions in homogeneous, isotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in three dimensions. We generalize the formalism that has been developed for analogous studies of time-dependent structure functions in fluid turbulence to MHD. By carrying out detailed numerical studies of such time-dependent structure functions in a shell model for three-dimensional MHD turbulence, we obtain both equal-time and dynamic scaling exponents., 9 pages; 5 figures; Published in Phys. We present theoretical and numerical results for the one-dimensional stochastically forced Burgers equation decimated on a fractal Fourier set of dimension $D$. We investigate the robustness of the energy transfer mechanism and of the small-scale statistical fluctuations by changing $D$. We find that a very small percentage of mode-reduction ($D \lesssim 1$) is enough to destroy most of the characteristics of the original non-decimated equation. Smoluchowski's coagulation kinetics is here shown to fail when the coalescing species are dilute and transported by a turbulent flow. The intermittent Lagrangian motion involves correlated violent events that lead to an unexpected rapid occurrence of the largest particles. This new phenomena is here quantified in terms of the anomalous scaling of turbulent three-point motion, leading to significant corrections in macroscopic processes that are critically sensitive to the early-stage emergence of large embryonic aggregates, as in planet formation or rain precipitation., 5 pages, 3 figures

We present an overview of the statistical properties of turbulence in two-dimensional (2D) fluids. After a brief recapitulation of well-known results for statistically homogeneous and isotropic 2D fluid turbulence, we give an overview of recent progress in this field for such 2D turbulence in conducting fluids, fluids with polymer additives, binary-fluid mixtures, and superfluids; we also discuss the statistical properties of particles advected by 2D turbulent fluids.

We show, by using direct numerical simulations and theory, how, by increasing the order of dissipativity ($\alpha$) in equations of hydrodynamics, there is a transition from a dissipative to a conservative system. This remarkable result, already conjectured for the asymptotic case $\alpha \to \infty$ [U. Frisch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 144501 (2008)], is now shown to be true for any large, but finite, value of $\alpha$ greater than a crossover value $\alpha_{\rm crossover}$. We thus provide a self-consistent picture of how dissipative systems, under certain conditions, start behaving like conservative systems and hence elucidate the subtle connection between equilibrium statistical mechanics and out-of-equilibrium turbulent flows., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Heavy particles suspended in a turbulent flow settle faster than in a still fluid. This effect stems from a preferential sampling of the regions where the fluid flows downward and is quantified here as a function of the level of turbulence, of particle inertia, and of the ratio between gravity and turbulent accelerations. By using analytical methods and detailed, state-of-the-art numerical simulations, settling is shown to induce an effective horizontal two-dimensional dynamics that increases clustering and reduce relative velocities between particles. These two competing effects can either increase or decrease the geometrical collision rates between same-size particles and are crucial for realistic modeling of coalescing particles., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The effects of purely elastic collisions on the dynamics of heavy inertial particles is investigated in a three-dimensional random incompressible flow. It is shown that the statistical properties of inter-particle separations and relative velocities are strongly influenced by the occurrence of sticky elastic collisions - particle pairs undergo a large number of collisions against each other during a small time interval over which, hence, they remain close to each other. A theoretical framework is provided for describing and quantifying this phenomenon and it is substantiated by numerical simulations. We show that a shell-model version of the three-dimensional Hall-magnetohydrodynamic (3D Hall-MHD) equations provides a natural theoretical model for investigating the multiscaling behaviors of velocity and magnetic structure functions. We carry out extensive numerical studies of this shell model, obtain the scaling exponents for its structure functions, in both the low-$k$ and high-$k$ power-law ranges of 3D Hall-MHD, and find that the extended-self-similarity (ESS) procedure is helpful in extracting the multiscaling nature of structure functions in the high-$k$ regime, which otherwise appears to display simple scaling. Solutions to finite-dimensional (all spatial Fourier modes set to zero beyond a finite wavenumber $K_G$), inviscid equations of hydrodynamics at long times are known to be at variance with those obtained for the original infinite dimensional partial differential equations or their viscous counterparts. Surprisingly, the solutions to such Galerkin-truncated equations develop sharp localised structures, called {\it tygers} [Ray, et al., Phys. Rev. E {\bf 84}, 016301 (2011)], which eventually lead to completely thermalised states associated with an equipartition energy spectrum. We now obtain, by using the analytically tractable Burgers equation, precise estimates, theoretically and via direct numerical simulations, of the time $\tau_c$ at which thermalisation is triggered and show that $\tau_c \sim \kg^\xi$, with $\xi = -4/9$. Nelkin scaling, the scaling of moments of velocity gradients in terms of the Reynolds number, is an alternative way of obtaining inertial-range information. It is shown numerically and theoretically for the Burgers equation that this procedure works already for Reynolds numbers of the order of 100 (or even lower when combined with a suitable extended self-similarity technique). At moderate Reynolds numbers, for the accurate determination of scaling exponents, it is crucial to use higher than double precision. We obtain, by extensive direct numerical simulations, time-dependent and equal-time structure functions for the vorticity, in both quasi-Lagrangian and Eulerian frames, for the direct-cascade regime in two-dimensional fluid turbulence with air-drag-induced friction. We show that differ- ent ways of extracting time scales from these time-dependent structure functions lead to different dynamic-multiscaling exponents, which are related to equal-time multiscaling exponents by different classes of bridge relations; for a representative value of the friction we verify that, given our error bars, these bridge relations hold., Comment: Published in Phys. Fractal decimation reduces the effective dimensionality of a flow by keeping only a (randomly chosen) set of Fourier modes whose number in a ball of radius $k$ is proportional to $k^D$ for large $k$. At the critical dimension D=4/3 there is an equilibrium Gibbs state with a $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum, as in [V. L'vov {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 89}, 064501 (2002)]. We elucidate the universal scaling and multiscaling properties of the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) in a driven symmetric binary fluid (SBF) mixture in its homogeneous miscible phase in three dimensions (3d). We show, for the first time, via Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) that structure functions of the velocity and the concentration gradient exhibit multiscaling in 3d and extended self-similarity (ESS). We also find that, in contrast to the well-known passive scalar turbulence problem, structure functions of the concentration show simple scaling. We propose a new shell model for SBF turbulence which preserve all the invariances in the ideal limit of the SBF equations and which reduces to a well-known shell model for fluid turbulence in the zero concentration field limit. We show that the shell model has the same scaling properties as the 3d SBF equations. Our combined results from our DNS of the SBF equations and shell-model studies consistently bring out the multiscaling of the velocity and concentration gradient fields and simple scaling of the concentration field., 8 pages, 10 figures, published in Phys.
