Olive oil extraction generates large amounts of olive mill residues (DOR) which may be used as fertilizer. The influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) on the phytotoxicity of dry olive residue (DOR) transformed with saprophytic fungi was studied. Aqueous extraction of DOR gave an (ADOR) fraction and an exhausted (SDOR) fraction, both of which had less phytotoxicity for tomato than the original DOR. The saprophytic fungi Trametes versicolor and Pycnoporus cinnabarinus further decreased the phytotoxicity of ADOR and SDOR on tomato. The decrease of phenols concentration and the differences in the level of laccase activity caused by these fungi suggest did not account fully for the reduced phytoxicity but the fact that the higher hydrolytic enzyme activity of P. cinnabarinus, paralleled the decrease of phytotoxicity, indicates that these enzymes seem to be involved. The AM fungus Glomus deserticola increased or exacerbated the beneficial effect of SDOR incubated with saprophytic fungi, in terms of dry weight of tomato plants. The percentage of root length colonized by G. deserticola strongly decreased in presence of DOR, but the level of mycorrhization was higher in presence of ADOR or SDOR. Our results suggest that the combination of aqueous extraction and incubation with saprophytic fungi will open the way for the use of olive oil extraction residues as organic amendment in agricultural soils. Erythromycin is commonly used for the empirical treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, but there is some concern about its usefulness when Q fever is suspected because of in-vitro studies showing a lack of efficacy against Coxiella burnetii. This study was undertaken to assess the clinical value of the antibiotic in this setting. Nineteen patients with Q fever pneumonia treated with a variety of antibiotics considered ineffective against C. burnetii, were reviewed. Eleven patients who received erythromycin had a rapid clinical improvement and each became afebrile by the fourth day of treatment. However, only two of eight patients who received other antibiotics improved (both of them had been treated with beta-lactams). Both groups were comparable regarding to age and previous duration and severity of disease. Those patients who did not respond to other antibiotics improved promptly after erythromycin was started. This study suggests that erythromycin is an adequate treatment for Q fever pneumonia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study evaluates the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of an oncological outpatient neurosurgery protocol using enhanced recovery after surgery principles in a European healthcare setting. Additionally, it assesses the impact of incorporating hospital at home (HaH) for perioperative follow-up on program efficiency and costs., Methods: We analyzed a case cohort of patients who underwent oncological outpatient neurosurgery with HaH-based postoperative follow-up for tumor removal or biopsy at a tertiary care center since 2019. A control cohort treated under standard inpatient care was also examined. Costs associated with surgery and postoperative care were meticulously calculated for both groups., Results: The case (n = 17) and control (n = 38) cohorts had comparable demographics and clinical profiles. Surgical costs, including operating room, anesthesia, and surgeon fees, were similar across groups. However, postoperative monitoring was significantly shorter for the outpatient cohort, leading to reduced observation costs (P < 0.001). While the duration of follow-up care was similar, outpatient follow-up via HaH was more cost-effective, reducing overall surgery costs by approximately €2958 per patient (P < 0.001) compared to inpatient care. No significant differences were observed in costs related to treatment, radiology, or lab tests between groups., Conclusions: Outpatient neurosurgery with HaH follow-up offers substantial cost savings without compromising care quality in a public health setting. Pantoea agglomerans is considered one of the most ubiquitous and versatile organisms that include strains that induce diseases in various crops and occasionally cause opportunistic infections in humans. To develop effective strategies to mitigate its impact on plant health and agricultural productivity, a comprehensive investigation is crucial for better understanding its pathogenicity. One proposed eco-friendly approach involves the enzymatic degradation of quorum sensing (QS) signal molecules like N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs), known as quorum quenching (QQ), offering potential treatment for such bacterial diseases. In this study the production of C4 and 3-oxo-C6HSL was identified in the plant pathogenic P. agglomerans CFBP 11141 and correlated to enzymatic activities such as amylase and acid phosphatase. Moreover, the heterologous expression of a QQ enzyme in the pathogen resulted in lack of AHLs production and the attenuation of the virulence by mean of drastically reduction of soft rot disease in carrots and cherry tomatoes. Additionally, the interference with the QS systems of P. agglomerans CFBP 11141 by two the plant growth-promoting and AHL-degrading bacteria (PGP-QQ) Pseudomonas segetis P6 and Bacillus toyonensis AA1EC1 was evaluated as a potential biocontrol approach for the first time. P. segetis P6 and B. toyonensis AA1EC1 demonstrated effectiveness in diminishing soft rot symptoms induced by P. agglomerans CFBP 11141 in both carrots and cherry tomatoes. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cell therapies like CAR-T are costly, complex therapeutic procedures. Outpatient models, including at-home transplantation, have been developed, resulting in similar survival results, reduced costs, and increased patient satisfaction. The complexity and safety of the process can be addressed with various emerging technologies (artificial intelligence, wearable sensors, point-of-care analytical devices, drones, virtual assistants) that allow continuous patient monitoring and improved decision-making processes. Patients, caregivers, and staff can also benefit from improved training with simulation or virtual reality. However, many technical, operational, and above all, ethical concerns need to be addressed. Finally, outpatient or at-home hematopoietic transplantation or CAR-T therapy creates a different, integrated operative system that must be planned, designed, and carefully adapted to the patient's characteristics and distance from the hospital. The use of fertilizers and pesticides to control plant diseases is widespread in intensive farming causing adverse effects together with the development of antimicrobial resistance pathogens. As the virulence of many Gram-negative phytopathogens is controlled by N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), the enzymatic disruption of this type of quorum-sensing (QS) signal molecules, mechanism known as quorum quenching (QQ), has been proposed as a promising alternative antivirulence therapy. In this study, a novel strain of Bacillus toyonensis isolated from the halophyte plant Arthrocaulon sp. exhibited numerous traits associated with plant growth promotion (PGP) and degraded a broad range of AHLs. Three lactonases and an acylase enzymes were identified in the bacterial genome and verified in vitro. The AHL-degrading activity of strain AA1EC1 significantly attenuated the virulence of relevant phytopathogens causing reduction of soft rot symptoms on potato and carrots. In vivo assays showed that strain AA1EC1 significantly increased plant length, stem width, root and aerial dry weights and total weight of tomato and protected plants against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato. To our knowledge, this is the first report to demonstrate PGP and QQ activities in the species B. toyonensis that make this strain as a promising phytostimulant and biocontrol agent., (© 2024 The Authors. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the outcomes of outpatient oncological neurosurgery (OON) in a European clinical setting and to compare them with the conventional inpatient protocol., Methods: Patients who had undergone OON (either tumor removal or biopsy) at the authors' center since 2019 were analyzed. A matched cohort of patients was selected from patients undergoing tumor surgery in the same period. Collected data included patient demographics, postoperative progress, specific location of the target lesion, and the procedure performed., Results: There were 18 patients in the case group and 59 patients in the control group. The outpatient surgeries had a same-day discharge rate of 89%, and all ambulatory patients successfully completed the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery program within 6.24 hours of the procedure. All ambulatory patients underwent Hospital-at-Home postoperative follow-up for an average of 4.12 days. Radiological complications were present in 11% of the case group and 8% of the control group. Postoperative neurological deficit occurred in 6% of the same-day discharge group and 3% of the control group. Among the patients in the control group, 3% suffered from postoperative seizures, whereas no seizures were observed in the case group. These differences were not statistically significant. General anesthesia-related complications were not observed in any of the patients., Conclusions: The authors' findings demonstrate that Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols and same-day discharge craniotomy for tumor resection and image-guided biopsy under general anesthesia, when patients are carefully selected, can be safely performed with excellent outcomes in a European clinical setting. The OON program proved to be a viable alternative to conventional hospitalization, showing comparable safety records and offering advantages in terms of patient recovery.

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic factors limiting sustainable agriculture. Halotolerant plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) increased salt stress tolerance in plants, but the mechanisms underlying the tolerance are poorly understood. This study investigated the PGP activity of four halotolerant bacteria under salinity stress and the tomato salt-tolerance mechanisms induced by the synergy of these bacteria with the exopolysaccharide (EPS) mauran. All PGPB tested in this study were able to offer a significant improvement of tomato plant biomass under salinity stress; Peribacillus castrilensis N3 being the most efficient one. Tomato plants treated with N3 and the EPS mauran showed greater tolerance to NaCl than the treatment in the absence of EPS and PGPB. The synergy of N3 with mauran confers salt stress tolerance in tomato plants by increasing sodium transporter genes' expression and osmoprotectant content, including soluble sugars, polyols, proline, GABA, phenols and the polyamine putrescine. These osmolytes together with the induction of sodium transporter genes increase the osmotic adjustment capacity to resist water loss and maintain ionic homeostasis. These findings suggest that the synergy of the halotolerant bacterium N3 and the EPS mauran could enhance tomato plant growth by mitigating salt stress and could have great potential as an inductor of salinity tolerance in the agriculture sector., (© 2023 The Authors.
