Abstract

The quest for high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with superior resistance against oxidation at elevated temperatures is one of the urgent problems in materials society, since HEAs are candidates for coating machinery parts operating in aggressive conditions (such as turbine blades, turbojet and jet engines, etc.). In this study, the effect of minor platinum alloying on the microstructure, phase composition and high-temperature oxidation resistance of Al0.5CoCrFeNiCuPt0.3 HEA was studied. It was demonstrated that platinum does not precipitate as an intermetallic phases; rather, it dissolves in the solid solution phases. High-temperature oxidation tests were carried out in a muffle furnace at 900 °C and 1000 °C for 50 h in air. It was found out that platinum alloying significantly increases oxidation resistance of Al0.5CoCrFeNiCuPt0.3 HEA at elevated temperatures with specific weight change of 0.139 mg/cm2 and 0.238 mg/cm2 after 50 h of isothermal exposure to 900 °C and 1000 °C, respectively. A dense oxide layer, mainly composed of Al2O3, without defects and pores protected the surface of the alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

quality factor depending on the material used. If these arrays consist of metal particles, then they cannot have a high quality factor because their light absorption restricts performance. In this paper we address the following question: can bound modes be formed in dielectric systems where the absorption of light is negligible? Our investigation of circular arrays of spherical particles within the framework of the multisphere Mie scattering theory using the simplest dipolarlike approach shows that (1) high quality modes in an array of 10 or more particles can be attained at least for a refractive index n > 2, so optical materials like TiO2 or GaAs can be used; (2) the most bound modes have nearly transverse polarization perpendicular to the circular plane; (3) in a particularly interesting case of TiO2 particles (rutile phase, n = 2.7), the quality factor of the most bound mode increases almost by an order of magnitude with the addition of 10 extra particles, while for particles made of GaAs the quality factor increases by almost two orders of magnitude with the addition of ten extra particles. The consideration of higher multipole contributions has demonstrated that the error of the dipolar approach does not exceed one percent if the refractive index nr is greater than 2. Abstract

The effect of minor platinum alloying on the microstructure, phase composition, oxidation and corrosion resistance of Al0.25CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) has been studied. It was observed that Pt does not segregate as a separate phase, but it is incorporated into the fcc solid solution. High-temperature oxidation of the as-cast Al0.25CoCrFeNi and Al0.25CoCrFeNiPt0.1 high-entropy alloys was carried out in a muffle furnace under isothermal conditions at 900 °C for 0–50 h (weighing was carried out every 10 h) in air atmosphere. The specific weight gain decreased from 0.58 mg/cm2 for Al0.25CoCrFeNi to 0.31 mg/cm2 for the platinum-doped Al0.25CoCrFeNiPt0.1 sample. It was determined that Pt triggers the formation of an interlayer Al-rich oxide phase between the outer Cr-rich oxide layer and the interior of the alloy, significantly reducing the oxidation rate of Al0.25CoCrFeNiPt0.1 HEA. Abstract

In this work, the morphology, microstructure, and phase composition of Al0.25CoCrFeNiSi0.6 high-entropy alloy coating (HEAC) deposited on stainless steel by detonation spraying (DS) are investigated. The Al0.25CoCrFeNiSi0.6 HEA ingot was first prepared by induction melting and then crushed and ground to ≤ 100 µm using a planetary ball milling apparatus. Detonation spraying was carried out on a computerized gas–thermal detonation spraying complex CCDS2000. The fabricated coating exhibited a lamellar microstructure with sizes of 5–30 µm and porosity in the range of 0.5–1.2%. Despite the rather large thickness of the coating (1500–1600 μm), its chemical composition remains almost identical across the thickness and corresponds to the stoichiometric ratio. There is no trace of elemental diffusion between the coating and the substrate. In the phase composition, in addition to bcc and fcc solid solutions, Cr3Si intermetallic compound was found. An average microhardness value of 550 ± 25 HV0.3 was obtained over the entire thickness of the coating. The wear rate of the coating was (1.6 ± 0.3) × 10–5 (mm3 N–1 m–1), and the adhesive wear with low level of tribo-oxidation was found to be the main wear mechanism for the coating. The results indicate that DS is superior alternative to other thermal spraying techniques in terms of porosity, interface bonding, and stability of the chemical composition throughout the thickness of the coating. Abstract

The electrochemical behavior of the as-cast Al0.5CoCrFeNiCuxAgy (x = 0.25, 0.5; y = 0, 0.1) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) in a 0.5M H2SO4 solution was studied. Polarization measurements were carried out in a standard three-electrode electrochemical cell at room temperature using a platinum counter electrode and a saturated silver chloride reference electrode. For Al0.5CoCrFeNiCu0.5 and Al0.5CoCrFeNiCu0.5Ag0.1, copper segregation along the grain boundaries was observed, which highly dissolved in the sulfuric acid solution and resulted in low corrosion resistance of the samples. Introducing Ag into Al0.5CoCrFeNiCu0.25 HEA led to the precipitation of a copper–silver eutectic structure, in which the copper regions were selectively dissolved in the sulfuric acid solution. Al0.5CoCrFeNiCu0.25 exhibited the best corrosion resistance with the corrosion current density of Icorr = 3.52 ± 0.02 μA/cm2, significantly superior to that of the Al0.5CoCrFeNi sample without copper and silver (Icorr = 6.05 ± 0.05 μA/cm2). Finally, the results indicated that suppressing elemental segregation by annealing or tailoring chemical composition is essential to improve the corrosion resistance of Al0.5CoCrFeNiCuxAgy HEAs. Abstract

Saturation diffusion with chromium has not been adequately studied among all the surface thermochemical treatment (STCT) processes of steels. Especially, the complex saturation behavior when several elements are added directly for chemical treatment needs to be systematically studied. This work aims at determining the effect of V, Mo, and Co on the parameters of chromium thermal saturation diffusion (thickness, phase composition, microstructure, and microhardness) of the surface layer in X35CrNi2-3 steel. The process was carried out at a temperature of 1000 °C for 24 h. The results showed that complex structural chromium plating together with the addition of strong carbide-forming elements (V and Mo) has a significant effect on the phase composition of the fabricated layer, where the formation of VC and Mo2C carbides significantly increases the microhardness of the samples to 2000 HV and 2500 HV, respectively. On the other hand, the addition of Co with a less carbide-forming affinity has little effect on the phase composition of the coating, and nitride compounds predominated in the microstructure similar to the single-element chromium plating. The results indicate the possibility of improving and accelerating the traditional thermal chromium plating processes and opening up new horizons for obtaining gradient coatings with superior tribological properties. Abstract

This paper studies the microstructure, composition and properties of a Al0.25CoCrFeNiV high entropy alloy coating (HEAC) deposited by laser cladding on austenitic-grade stainless steel. Laser cladding was carried out in an argon atmosphere on a FL-Clad-R-4 laser metal deposition complex with the following parameters: the laser power was 1400 W, the spot diameter was 3 mm, the track displacement was 1.2 mm, and the scanning speed was set to 10 mm/s. A change in the microstructure of the coating after laser cladding was revealed in comparison with as-cast high entropy alloy (HEA) Al0.25CoCrFeNiV. A significant decrease was found in the size of vanadium precipitates, from 20–40 µm in the as-cast state to 1–3 µm after laser cladding. A change in microhardness over the thickness of the coating from 370 HV0.3 at the outer surface to 270 HV0.3 at the boundary with the substrate was established, which may be due to the diffusion of Fe from the stainless steel into the coating material during laser cladding. Despite these features, the resulting coating adheres tightly to the substrate, and has no cracks or other defects, which indicates the possibility of using laser cladding to create coatings from high entropy alloys. Abstract

Additive manufacturing of high-entropy alloys has recently attracted considerable scientific interest owing to their exceptional mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In this work, Al0.25CoCrFeNiCu and Al0.45CoCrFeNiSi0.45 high-entropy alloys coatings are deposited on stainless steel using laser cladding. The prealloyed high-entropy alloys fabricated by arc melting followed by crushing were used as a precursor for laser cladding, which significantly decreased the optimum laser power to 1400–1600 W and hence minimized the thermal effect on the substrate. Laser cladding preserved the dendritic structure of arc melted alloys, while highly refined the dendritic microstructure. Abstract

The study aims to establish the efficacy of bortezomib plus melphalan-prednisone as compared to melphalan-prednisone alone in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma that was ineligible for high-dose therapy is presented. The results indicate that bortezomib plus melphalan-prednisone was more effective in treatment as compared to melphalan-prednisone alone.
