Detection of bacterial contamination in dairy products of daily use is a challenge worldwide. We have utilized Methylene Blue Reduction Test (MBRT) for quantification of the microbial count in dairy products (milk) and developed a proof-of-concept (POC) based on this for in-filed applications. In this study, we have used pasteurized milk contaminated with model bacteria Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus for the calibration and validation of the developed POC. The conversion of MB to Leuco-MB i.e., the colorimetric change due to the reduction of MB to Leuco-MB in presence of microbes has been utilized as the tool to detect presence of microbes in milk. The absorbance peak for methylene blue (MB) at 664 nm decreases significantly in presence of microbes and the blue color becomes faded. In our study, we have employed methylene blue (MB) discolouration phenomenon to estimate the microbial count in milk samples using our developed spectroscopy based POC. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the POC were found to be 0.32 CFU/mL and 0.97 CFU/mL. The end users of the developed POC are primarily those involved in the production, processing, testing, regulation, and research of dairy products to ensure they meet safety standards and protect public health. These include retailers, dairy farmers, dairy processors, quality control laboratories, regulatory agencies and research institutions. In our experiment, we have observed a significant change in MB absorption in the milk contaminated with microbes. The indigenously developed sensor strips designed for the working of the POC turn to colorless Leuco-MB compared to milk without the microbes. The analysis of the strips has been measured in the developed device.

Improving the productiveness of rock cutting bit is an essential requirement for sustainable mining. Different heat treatment techniques are employed in the past to improve the proficiencies of cutting bits. Out of them, cryogenic treatment (CT) is accepted as a viable method for expanding the service life of a variety of cutting tool materials. The intention of the present study is to evaluate the effect of cryogenic treatment under varying soaking duration (12, 24 and 36 h) on hardness and wear resistance of WC-6%Co rock cutting bits. It also addresses the underlying mechanisms that CT carries in the modifications of microstructure and phase transformation. The β-Co phase fraction has been significantly reduced due to cryogenic treatment. The wear resistance of both cryo-treated and untreated bits was examined by scratch test and sliding wear test. From the results, an increase in hardness (CT 24–13.09 %) was observed as compared to UT, which is associated with a transformation from face-centered cubic α-cobalt (FCC α-Co) to hexagonal close-packed ε-cobalt (HCP ε-Co) phase due to cryogenic treatment. The coefficient of friction and wear resistance for the cryo-treated bits correspondingly increases in comparison to the untreated bit. CT 24 bit exhibits the maximum hardness of 2212 HV, an elevated COF (16.64 %) and the highest wear resistance (87.15 %) compared to UT and other CT bits. From the results, cryogenic treatment of cutting bits can be recommended for rock cutting application in mining industries.

Abstract The recent prediction of diabetes to be a global pandemic invites a detection strategy preferably non-invasive, and bloodless to manage the disease and the associated complications. Here, we have synthesized chitosan polymer functionalized, organic–inorganic bio-compatible nano-hybrids of Mn3O4 nanoparticles, and characterized it by utilizing several optical methodologies for the structural characterization which shows the Michaelis Menten (MM) kinetics for glucose and alpha-amylase protein (well-known diabetes biomarkers). We have also studied the potentiality for the detection of alpha-amylase in human salivary secretion which is reported to be strongly correlated with uncontrolled hyperglycemia. Finally, we have developed a prototype for the measurement of glucose (LOD of 0.38 mg/dL, LOQ of 1.15 mg/dL) and HbA1c (LOD of 0.15% and LOQ of 0.45%) utilizing the basic knowledge in the study for the detection of uncontrolled hyperglycemia at the point-of-care. With the limited number of clinical trials, we have explored the potential of our work in combating the diabetic pandemic across the globe in near future.

Abstract Recent findings suggest a key role for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the pathogenesis and progression of ulcerative colitis (UC). Several studies have also highlighted the efficacy of citrate functionalized Mn3O4 nanoparticles as redox medicine against a number of ROS-mediated disorders. Here we show that synthesized nanoparticles consisting of chitosan functionalized tri-manganese tetroxide (Mn3O4) can restore redox balance in a mouse model of UC induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). Our in-vitro characterization of the developed nanoparticle confirms critical electronic transitions in the nanoparticle to be important for the redox buffering activity in the animal model. A careful administration of the developed nanoparticle not only reduces inflammatory markers in the animals, but also reduces the mortality rate from the induced disease. This study provides a proof of concept for the use of nanomaterial with synergistic anti-inflammatory and redox buffering capacity to prevent and treat ulcerative colitis.

Abstract The study was aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly developed spectroscopy-based non-invasive and noncontact device (SAMIRA) for the simultaneous measurement of hemoglobin, bilirubin and oxygen saturation as an alternative to the invasive biochemical method of blood sampling. The accuracy of the device was assessed in 4318 neonates having incidences of either anemia, jaundice, or hypoxia. Transcutaneous bilirubin, hemoglobin and blood saturation values were obtained by the newly developed instrument which was corroborated with the biochemical blood tests by expert clinicians. The instrument is trained using Artificial Neural Network Analysis to increase the acceptability of the data. The artificial intelligence incorporated within the instrument determines the disease condition of the neonate. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r was found to be 0.987 for hemoglobin estimation and 0.988 for bilirubin and blood gas saturation respectively. The bias and the limits of agreement for the measurement of all the three parameters were within the clinically acceptance limit.

Abstract Anti-microbial resistant infection is predicted to be alarming in upcoming years. In the present study, we proposed co-localization of two model drugs viz., rifampicin and benzothiazole used in anti-tuberculosis and anti-fungal agents respectively in a nanoscopic cationic micelle (cetyl triethyl ammonium bromide) with hydrodynamic diameter of 2.69 nm. Sterilization effect of the co-localized micellar formulation against a model multi-drug resistant bacterial strain viz., Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was also investigated. 99.88% decrease of bacterial growth in terms of colony forming unit was observed using the developed formulation. While Dynamic Light Scattering and Forsters Resonance Energy Transfer between benzothiazole and rifampicin show co-localization of the drugs in the nanoscopic micellar environment, analysis of time-resolved fluorescence decays by Infelta-Tachiya model and the probability distribution of the donor–acceptor distance fluctuations for 5 μM,10 μM and 15 μM acceptor concentrations confirm efficacy of the co-localization. Energy transfer efficiency and the donor acceptor distance are found to be 46% and 20.9 Å respectively. We have also used a detailed computational biology framework to rationalize the sterilization effect of our indigenous formulation. It has to be noted that the drugs used in our studies are not being used for their conventional indication. Rather the co-localization of the drugs in the micellar environment shows a completely different indication of their use in the remediation of multi-drug resistant bacteria revealing the re-purposing of the drugs for potential use in hospital-born multi-drug resistant bacterial infection.

The present work explains the thermal comfort properties of cotton (100:0), bamboo (0:100), and cotton:bamboo (70:30, 50:50, 30:70) blended yarns/fabrics. The physical characteristics of cotton:bamboo (50:50) blended fabrics show the very closest properties of pure cotton yarn fabrics for the count of 30 tex. The proportion of bamboo fiber in the fabrics influenced the physical properties of the yarn such as areal density, fiber fineness, and other structural parameters. The plain-woven fabric generally aligned as 30 tex in warp direction for pure cotton yarn and 30 tex in weft direction for pure bamboo yarn. Similarly, the experiment is conducted for various proportions and noted that cotton in warp and bamboo in weft direction depicts higher air permeability and water vapor permeability (WVP) compared to all the other fabrics. From the comfort properties of fabrics, the thermal conductivity and the thermal resistance of the blended fabrics were found to be decreased with a gradual increase in the ratio of bamboo fiber. The reduction in inter-yarn space and higher yarn hairiness leads to reduction in air and water permeability values with an increase in cotton proportion. The enhanced WVP and air permeability of the prepared fabrics were observed with an increase in bamboo content.

Abstract ReX2 (X = S, Se) remains a copious source of controversies and unanswered questions due to its widely contrasting experimental and theoretical results. With the help of comparative first‐principles electronic structure and phonon calculations, the correct structures for both systems are established, which minimize the apparent divergence of different experimental results. It is demonstrated that ReS2 and ReSe2 are neither iso‐structural nor iso‐electronic. The contributions of the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane orbitals at the band‐edges of the bulk and monolayers are coordinated with their anisotropic optical response. Under moderately high pressure, both of these systems are observed to undergo a semiconductor to metal transition. With the help of a combined full‐potential density functional theory and multiplet ligand field theory (DFT+MLFT) approach, the X‐ray spectral properties of these two systems are analyzed in the light of their intricate differences of optimized structures and electronic correlations.

A huge amount of carbon black (40-60 phr) was commonly used as a reinforcing material in manufacturing of tires to improve the technical properties of pure rubber. Carbon black causes severe health hazard like skin cancer, respiratory problem due to its fly loss property. This study focusses on reducing the usage of carbon black by replacing it with minimal quantity of nanoclay to compensate the technical properties of rubber. Natural Rubber nanocomposite are fabricated using solution and mechanical mixing method in presence and absence of compatibilizer. Cure characteristics, wear test and mechanical properties were examined. NR nanocomposite with dual filler in presence of compatibilizer showed enhancement in torque values, mechanical and wear resistant property. Wear resistance, tensile strength and modulus of dual filler nanocomposite was increased by 66.7%, 91% and 85% when compared to pure NR. Hence NR nanocomposite with dual filler in presence of compatibilizer was found as a proving and possible nanocomposite for tire application.

Summary: The usual treatment for anemia and especially for anemia of inflammation (also called anemia of chronic disease) is supportive care with the target of improving the lifestyle of the patients. There is no effective medication to date for proper management. As the inflammation, erythropoiesis, and oxidative stress are the major concerns in this case, it inspired us to use a nano-erythropoietin stimulating agent (nano-ESA) made up of a nano-complex of manganese and citrate (Mn-citrate nano-complex), which has been hypothesized to have excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Single oral dose of the nano-ESA efficiently prevented the onset of anemia as well as led to recovery from anemia in our phenylhydrazine (PHz)-intoxicated C57BL/6J mice model of anemia without any toxicological side effects. These preliminary findings may pave the way for an affordable and safe clinical use of the nano-ESA as a rapid recovery medication of anemia, especially anemia of inflammation.

Abstract The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) represents the strength of the rock. It frequently requires during the introductory phase of mining projects such as tunneling, rock excavation, blast hole designs, etc. Usually, the determination of UCS of rocks is carrying out in a concerned laboratory. The main drawback of determining the UCS in a laboratory requires at least five core samples of high-grade quality. Many problems and limitations are associated with removing the core, and also preparing the test specimen for UCS is tedious, time-consuming, and expensive. Therefore an attempt is made to develop an efficient indirect method to estimate the UCS of rocks without using the core samples. In this experimental investigation, the drilling response, such as thrust, is gathered by drill tool dynamometer considering the different drill operating parameters. The prediction model is developed with a regression technique using the measured thrust and calculated torque. The prediction capacity and validation of the model are carried out using the standard procedure. The experimental results show that the model could explain the variance in UCS up to 93.60%. RMSE and MAPE values in terms of percentage are 3.49% and 11.27%, respectively. Besides, the model's validation is checked for sandstone and limestone having the UCS 28 MPa and 35 MPa, respectively, and yielded the best prediction results with an error of 8.51% and 8.01% suggesting that the developed model could predict the UCS of sedimentary rock types within acceptable error limit, and reasonably. The correlation of UCS of rocks and drilling specific energy is also tested and found that linear relationship between them with an R2 value of 92.10%.

Adhikari et al. use the redox modulatory abilities of citrate functionalized Mn3O4 nanoparticles to ameliorate oxidative damage in murine disease model of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This nanomedicine works by protecting structural and functional integrity of mitochondria from oxidative injury, reducing intracellular ROS, downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and maintaining cellular redox homeostasis.

Enzyme function can be altered via modification of its amino acid residues, side chains and large-scale domain modifications. Herein, we have addressed the role of residue modification in catalytic activity and molecular recognition of an enzyme alpha-chymotrypsin (CHT) in presence of a covalent cross-linker formalin. Enzyme assay reveals reduced catalytic activity upon increased formalin concentration. Polarization gated anisotropy studies of a fluorophore 8-Anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid (ANS) in CHT show a dip rise pattern in presence of formalin which is consistent with the generation of multiple ANS binding sites in the enzyme owing to modifications of its local amino acid residues. Molecular docking study on amino acid residue modifications in CHT also indicate towards the formation of multiple ANS binding site. The docking model also predicted no change in binding behavior for the substrate Ala-Ala-Phe-7-amido-4-methylcoumarin (AMC) at the active site upon formalin induced amino acid cross-linking.

Major constituents of all living beings are nano-sized molecular species like lipids, proteins, fatty acids, and nucleic acids which are constantly in communication with each other through a complex interwoven molecular network. Understanding a cellular physiological function at the molecular level requires differentiation of the self-assembled biomolecules. Photo physical studies of 8-anilino-1-napthalenesulphonate (ANS) and Nile red (NR) are used to explore differentiation of these biomolecules. An efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from ANS to NR causes significant fluorescence quenching of ANS in lipid, whereas it becomes practically insignificant for protein. From the present study, FRET efficiency appears as a marker for differentiating these self-assembled macromolecules. To this end, a novel physical method based on FRET efficiency has been developed to measure the total lipid content of milk.

This study mainly focuses on the possibility of using Coccinia Indica (CI) fiber as reinforcement in structural polymer composite materials because of its lightweight and eco-friendly nature. Fibers were extracted from the dried stems by combing process using metal teeth brush. The thermo-physico-mechanical properties, chemical compositions, and morphological structures of CI fiber were analyzed in detail. A higher percentage of cellulose content in CI fiber and the lesser amount of skimpy lignin, hemicellulose, ash, and wax content were confirmed through chemical analysis. The functional groups with their corresponding peaks were depicted through FTIR analysis. XRD studies divulge that the CI fiber contains crystallinity index (CrI) of 53.03% and crystallite size (L) of 5.81 nm. SEM revealed that the fiber possesses cylindrical morphology with multi-cellular structure. The presence of parenchyma and chlorenchyma tissues in the cell wall of CI fiber was also confirmed, which helps for better adhesion and mechanical properties to the composite. TGA study reveals that the major degradation of CI fiber occurs at a temperature range of 204.16°C to 376.3°C. The tensile strength of cellulose-based CI fiber is comparable with the other conventional fibers and it is well enough for its usage as reinforcing material in composite manufacturing.

Following the seminal discovery of Richard Feynman, several micromachines have been made that are capable of several applications, such as solar energy harvesting, remediation of environmental pollution, etc. Here we have synthesized a nanohybrid combining TiO2 nanoparticle and light harvesting robust organic molecule RK1 (2-cyano-3-(4-(7-(5-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-4-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazol-4-yl)phenyl) acrylic acid) as a model micromachine having solar light harvesting ability potential for application in photocatalysis, preparation of solar active devices, etc. Detailed structural characterization, including High Resolution Transmission Electronic Microscopy (HRTEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), has been performed on the nanohybrid. We have studied the excited-state ultrafast dynamics of the efficient push-pull dye RK1 in solution, on mesoporous semiconductor nanoparticles, and in insulator nanoparticles by streak camera (resolution of the order of 500 fs). The dynamics of such photosensitizers in polar solvents have been reported, and it has been observed that completely different dynamics occur when they are attached to the surface of the semiconductor/insulator nanosurface. A femtosecond-resolved fast electron transfer has been reported when photosensitizer RK1 has been attached to the surface of the semiconductor nanoparticle, which in turn plays a crucial role in the development of an efficient light harvesting material. The generation of reactive oxygen species as a result of femtosecond-resolved photoinduced electron injection in the aqueous medium is also investigated in order to explore the possibility of redox-active micromachines, which are found to be crucial for efficient and enhanced photocatalysis.

The mounting evidence of bacterial resistance against commonly prescribed antibiotics warrants the development of new antibacterial drugs on an urgent basis. Linezolid, an oxazolidinone antibiotic, is a lead molecule in designing new oxazolidinones as antibacterial agents. In this study, we report the antibacterial potential of the novel oxazolidinone-sulphonamide/amide conjugates that were recently reported by our research group. The antibacterial assays showed that, from the series, oxazolidinones 2 and 3a exhibited excellent potency (MIC of 1.17 μg/mL) against B. subtilis and P. aeruginosa strains, along with good antibiofilm activity. Docking studies revealed higher binding affinities of oxazolidinones 2 and 3a compared to linezolid, which were further validated by molecular dynamics simulations. In addition to this, other computational studies, one-descriptor (log P) analysis, ADME-T and drug likeness studies demonstrated the potential of these novel linezolid-based oxazolidinones to be taken forward for further studies.

Abstract The study was aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly developed non-invasive and non-contact bilirubin measurement device (AJO-Neo) as an alternative to the conventional invasive biochemical method of total serum bilirubin (TSB) estimation in preterm and term neonates suffering from hyperbilirubinemia associated with risk factors, and/or undergoing phototherapy. The safety and efficacy of the device were assessed in 1968 neonates with gestational ages ranging from 28 to 41 weeks and suffering from incidences of hyperbilirubinemia. Linear regression analysis showed a good correlation between AJO-Neo and the conventional method of TSB (Pearson’s coefficient, r = 0.79). The small bias (0.27 mg/dL) and limits of agreements (− 3.44 to 3.99 mg/dL) were within the range of clinical acceptance. The device was also precise in the measurement of bilirubin levels in all subgroups of the study. The receiver operator curve (ROC), that takes account of both sensitivity and specificity of a device showed high efficacy of the device (area under the curve, AUC = 0.83) in the detection of bilirubin. While monitoring the bilirubin level during phototherapy, the device indicated promising results showing good agreement with TSB. Specificities and sensitivities of the device indicated a much higher accuracy in neonates with associated risk factors for hyperbilirubinemia. Hence, the newly developed device (AJO-Neo) is reliable in measuring bilirubin level in preterm, and term neonates irrespective of gestational or postnatal age, sex, risk factors, feeding behavior or skin color.

Solar cells are capable of converting light energy into electrical energy and can completely replace the utilization of fossil fuel energy resources. The current research work majorly concentrates on the development and coating of antireflection materials over the front contact of silicon solar cells. Ferrous disulphide was one of the wide band gap semiconductors employed as a catalytic electrode (in DSSCs), counter electrode (in QDSSs), and solar energy harvester. FeS2 was synthesized through the hydrothermal method. The antireflective coating was performed over solar cells through the electrospraying technique. It was found that the antireflective material was distributed evenly over the coating substrate at 2 ml/h for 30 (F1), 60 (F2), 90 (F3), and 120 (F4) min. The coated solar cells were examined under neodymium light illumination mimicking sunlight. The effect of electrosprayed FeS2 films adhered over the front contact of solar cells was evaluated using various characterization techniques. The maximum efficiency attained by coated solar cells under indirect light was 19.6%. With the aid of electrospraying, hydrothermally synthesized FeS2 assists incoming photons with energy greater than the bandgap of a procured Si solar cell to take part in the photogeneration process. The maximum Isc and Voc of 38.08 mA/cm2 and 0.655 V were achieved for the F3 solar cell under neodymium irradiation.

This paper represents the synthesis, characterization and validation of a cobalt chloride functionalised nano-porous cellulose membrane, a unique sensor for non-contact measurement of water potential in various biomedical and environmentally important matrices. The developed nano sensor, along with associated electronic components, is assembled as a prototype device called “MEGH” (Measuring Essential Good Hydration) to measure essential hydration of matrices of both environmental and biomedical importance, including soil and human skin. The relative humidity above the soil surface in equilibrium with the soil moisture has been studied for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic soil types. Our studies confirm that the percentage of water available to plants is greater in hydrophobic soil rather than in hydrophilic soil, which has also been corroborated using simulation studies. Furthermore, the requirement of hydration in human skin has also been evaluated by measuring the water potential of both dry and moist skin.

Natural fibre composite materials are one such capable material which replaces the conventional and synthetic materials for the practical applications where we require less weight and energy conservation. The present paper emphasizes the effect of Cloisite 30B on the newly identified Coccinia Indica fibre, which is extracted from a medicinal plant (i.e., Cucurbitaceae) by manual process. The chemically treated Coccinia Indica fibre reinforced composite is prepared by using the epoxy resin and the detailed preparation methodology is presented. In this paper, the mechanical properties and morphological characterizations of nanoclay filled chemically treated Coccinia Indica fibre reinforced epoxy composites were compared with the unfilled composite. The experimental evidence shows that the increase in weight percentage of nanoclay enhances the tensile, flexural, impact, compression properties of the treated Coccinia Indica fibre reinforced epoxy composites. These results were also confirmed by the Scanning Electron Microscopy observations of composites and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis of the chemical structure. Fibre pull-outs on the fractured specimen during physical testing of the composites were also investigated. As a results, the presence of 3 wt.% nanoclay provides better interfacial adhesion between fibres and matrix, which gives the best results compare to others. The drug resistance of bacteria is a significant threat to human civilization while the action of antibiotics against drug-resistant bacteria is severely limited owing to the hydrophobic nature of drug molecules, which unquestionably inhibit its permanency for clinical applications. The antibacterial action of nanomaterials offers major modalities to combat drug resistance of bacteria. The current work reports the use of nano–metal-organic frameworks encapsulating drug molecules to enhance its antibacterial activity against model drug-resistant bacteria and biofilm of the bacteria. We have attached rifampicin (RF), a well-documented antituberculosis drug with tremendous pharmacological significance, into the pore surface of zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF8) by a simple synthetic procedure. The synthesized ZIF8 has been characterized using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method before and after drug encapsulation. The electron microscopic strategies such as scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope methods were performed to characterize the binding between ZIF8 and RF. We have also performed picosecond-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy to validate the formation of the ZIF8-RF nanohybrids (NHs). The drug release profile experiment demonstrates that ZIF8-RF depicts pH-responsive drug delivery and is ideal for targeting bacterial disease corresponding to its inherent acidic nature. Most remarkably, ZIF8-RF gives enhanced antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and also prompts entire damage of structurally robust bacterial biofilms. Overall, the present study depicts a detailed physical insight for manufactured antibiotic-encapsulated NHs presenting tremendous antimicrobial activity that can be beneficial for manifold practical applications.

Abstract The objective of this work is to develop graphene oxide (GO) incorporated butyl rubber (IIR) nanocomposites by three different methods: direct addition approach (DAAM), single step method (SSM) and two step method (TSM). Chlorobutyl rubber was used as a compatibilizer in SSM and TSM. Mechanical properties of developed nanocomposites was increased and gas permeability co-efficient was decreased up on addition of GO content in IIR matrix. Maximum technical properties was achieved for the nanocomposite with 1.6 wt.% of GO in all methods was achieved due to better interfacial bonding with IIR matrix. When GO content increases above 1.6 wt.% in IIR matrix leads to agglomeration which resulted in deterioration of mechanical properties. HR-TEM studies revealed that nanocomposites prepared by TSM shows exfoliated structure of GO in IIR matrix due to homogenous distribution when compared to the nanocomposites prepared with DAAM and SSM.

Molecular interaction of aromatic dyes with biological macromolecules are important for the development of minimally invasive disease diagnostic biotechnologies. In the present work, we have used Toluidine Blue (TB) as a model dye, which is a well-known staining agent for the diagnosis of oral cancer and have studied the interaction of various biological macromolecules (protein and DNA) with the dye at different pH. Our spectroscopic studies confirm that TB interacts with Human Serum Albumin (HSA), a model protein at very high pH conditions which is very hard to achieve physiologically. On the other hand, TB significantly interacts with the DNA at physiological pH value (7.4). Our molecular studies strengthen the understanding of the Toluidine Blue staining of cancer cells, where the relative ratio of the nucleic acids is higher than the normal intracellular content. We have also developed a non-invasive, non-contact spectroscopic technique to explore the possibility of quantitatively detecting oral cancer by exploiting the interaction of TB with DNA. We have also reported development of a prototype named “Oral-O-Scope” for the detection of Oral cancer and have carried out human studies using the prototype.

Ultrasensitive detection of heavy metal ions in available water around us is a great challenge for scientists since long time. We developed an optical technique that combines Rayleigh scattering of UV light (365 nm) and post-sample fluorescence detection from colloidal silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) having a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at 420 nm. The efficacy of the technique is tested by the detection of several model toxic ions, including mercury, lead, and methylmercury in aqueous media. The light scattering from the Hg-included/inflated Ag NPs at 395 nm was observed to saturate the light sensor even with ppm-order concentrations of Hg ions in the water sample. However, the pollutant is not detected at lower concentrations at this wavelength. Instead, the fluorescence of a high-pass filter (cut-off at 400 nm) at 520 nm is applied to detect pollutant concentrations of up to several hundreds of ppm in the water sample. We also detected lead and methylmercury as model pollutants in aqueous media and validated the efficacy of our strategy. Finally, we report the development of a working prototype based on the strategy developed for efficient detection of pollutants in drinking/agricultural water.

In the present study, protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) and squarine (SQ2) have been used in a co-sensitized dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) to apply their high absorption coefficients in the visible and NIR region of the solar spectrum and to probe the possibility of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the two dyes. FRET from the donor PPIX to acceptor SQ2 was observed from detailed investigation of the excited-state photophysics of the dye mixture, using time-resolved fluorescence decay measurements. The electron transfer time scales from the dyes to TiO2 have also been characterized for each dye. The current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and the wavelength-dependent photocurrent measurements of the co-sensitized DSSCs reveal that FRET between the two dyes increase the photocurrent as well as the efficiency of the device. From the absorption spectra of the co-sensitized photoanodes, PPIX was observed to be efficiently acting as a co-adsorbent and to reduce the dye aggregation problem of SQ2. It has further been proven by a comparison of the device performance with a chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) added to a SQ2-sensitized DSSC. Apart from increasing the absorption window, the FRET-induced enhanced photocurrent and the anti-aggregating behavior of PPIX towards SQ2 are crucial points that improve the performance of the co-sensitized DSSC.

Here, we report a facile approach, by the photochemical reduction technique, for in situ synthesis of Au-reduced graphene oxide (Au-RGO) nanohybrids, which demonstrate excellent adsorption capacities and recyclability for a broad range of dyes. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data confirm the successful synthesis of Au-RGO nanohybrids. The effect of several experimental parameters (temperature and pH) variation can effectively control the dye adsorption capability. Furthermore, kinetic adsorption data reveal that the adsorption process follows a pseudo second-order model. The negative value of Gibbs free energy (ΔG0) confirms spontaneity while the positive enthalpy (ΔH0) indicates the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Picosecond resolved fluorescence technique unravels the excited state dynamical processes of dye molecules adsorbed on the Au-RGO surface. Time resolved fluorescence quenching of Rh123 after adsorption on Au-RGO nanohybrids indicates efficient energy transfer from Rh123 to Au nanoparticles. A prototype device has been fabricated using Au-RGO nanohybrids on a syringe filter (pore size: 0.220 μm) and the experimental data indicate efficient removal of dyes from waste water with high recyclability. The application of this nanohybrid may lead to the development of an efficient reusable adsorbent in portable water purification.
