1. Subcutaneous angiomyolipoma in a bichon frise dog. Clinical case

Abstract

Angiomyolipoma located on the caudal part of the abdominal wall was reported in a 15–year–old femal bichon frise dog weighing 17 kg. A radiographic examination was performed followed by a histological examination of the mass, which revealed a benign encapsulated mesenchymal proliferation composed of three compartments: vascular, smooth muscle and adipose. The predominant adipose component is made of large lobules of mature adipocytes. A blood chemistry profile was performed revealing an increase in the activity of liver enzymes: Gammaglutamyl transferase (12.90 IU·l-1), Aspartate aminotransferase (70.1 IU·l-1), Alkaline phosphatase (403 IU·l-1); total, direct and indirect hyperbilirubinemia were also noted (6.71 mg·l-1, 1.54 mg·l-1, 5.17 mg·l-1 respectively). The management of angiomyolipoma requires surgery which consists of the removal of the neoplasia mass to prevent local progression. This clinical case is considered as the first case of angiomyolipoma reported in canine veterinary medicine in Algeria.

Abstract

Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is a congenital disease with a polygenic hereditary component, characterised by abnormal development of the coxo-femoral joint which results in poor coaptation of the femoral head in the acetabulum; the disease rapidly progresses to osteoarthritis of the hip. While dysplasia has been recognised in practically all canine breeds, it is much more common and of concern in medium and large dog breeds with rapid development. Dysplasia in predisposed breeds, particularly the German Shepherd, is the object of screening based on systematic radiological control in some countries. Our collected dataset comprises 507 X-ray images of dogs affected by hip dysplasia (HD). These images were meticulously evaluated using six Deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models. Following an extensive analysis of the top-performing models, VGG16 emerged as the leader, achieving remarkable accuracy, recall, and precision scores of 98.32%, 98.35%, and 98.44%, respectively. Leveraging deep learning (DL) techniques, this approach excels in diagnosing CHD from hip X-rays with a high degree of accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Prevalence of Eimeria species, detected by ITS1-PCR, in broiler poultry farms located in seven provinces of northeastern Algeria

Abstract

Coccidiosis is an important global disease of chickens and can cause major economic losses for local poultry production in countries such as Algeria. Little is known about the extent of infection or diversity, of the causative agent Eimeria spp., in Algeria. A priority, therefore, is to determine the prevalence and species composition to inform strategies on treatments and control measures. Samples were collected from 187 broiler farms, located in 7 Northeastern Algerian provinces (Jijel, Constantine, Skikda, Mila, Setif, Batna, Bordj bou-Arreridj), and Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 PCR (ITS1-PCR) was used to determine the prevalence and composition of Eimeria species in chickens. The survey revealed the presence of all seven species of Eimeria at different prevalences (E. maxima (69%), E. acervulina (68.4%), E. necatrix (11.2%), E. tenella (8%), E. praecox (4.3%), E. mitis (2.1%), E. brunetti (2.1%). Multiple infections, with up to 4 different Eimeria species present on a single farm, was the most frequent situation in our samples (51.9% mixed infections versus 47.6% single infections). All farms revealed infected samples and we conclude that this parasite is a significant problem in these provinces.

Abstract

The present study represents the first description of ionophore resistance in recovered from commercial Algerian (Jijel-Algeria) broiler farms. Microscopy and intervening transcribed sequence 1 PCR (ITS1 PCR) revealed only 2 Eimeria species present in litter from these farms- namely Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria maxima. A pool of these isolates were evaluated in broiler chickens (Cobb 500) for sensitivity to 5 anticoccidial compounds-diclazuril (1ppm), lasalocid (125ppm), monensin (125ppm), narasin (70ppm) and salinomycin (60ppm). As indicated by anticoccidial sensitivity profiles based on lesion scores and anticoccidial index (ACI), complete resistance to monensin and narasin, partial resistance to salinomycin and lasalocid, and complete sensitivity to diclazuril was observed. While lack of sensitivity to monensin is not surprising given its use for years as the sole anticoccidial compound, the resistance to monoether (narasin) and polyether (lasalocid) ionophores suggests that cross-resistance has developed in a segment of the Eimeria population. The fairly uniform Eimeria species composition among all poultry farms suggests that E. acervulina and E. maxima more rapidly develop resistance to ionophore drugs.
