Objetivo: Explorar as relações entre eventos estressantes vividos no último ano, avaliações subjetivas de suporte, classe e mobilidade social e sintomatologia depressiva medida pela CES-D. Participantes: No contexto de uma pesquisa sobre envelhecimento saudável (PENSA), foram entrevistados 903 idosos residentes na comunidade (M = 72,3 ± 8,21 anos). Resultados: A prevalência de sintomas depressivos foi de 33,8%. Relacionaram-se com suporte insuficiente, ter vivido de quatro a 16 eventos estressantes, ter de 60 a 69 anos, ser mulher, perceber-se como de classe média baixa e ter mobilidade social descendente. A ausência de depressão relacionou-se com suporte social satisfatório, um a três eventos estressantes, ser homem, ter de 70 a 79 anos, ter mais de 80 anos, perceber-se de classe média e estabilidade da posição social. As análises multivariadas de regressão identificaram que alto número de eventos estressantes no último ano (OR = 2,55) e suporte social insatisfatório (OR = 2,31) ofereceram os maiores riscos para sintomatologia depressiva.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and identify sociodemographic factors and health behaviors associated with a negative perception of self-care in community-resident older adults in seven Brazilian cities. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Frailty in Brazilian Older Adults (FIBRA) study. Sociodemographic characteristics, health-related behaviors, and perception of self-care in health were assessed. For analysis, percentage distributions and respective 95% confidence intervals were estimated, at a significance level of 5%. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were carried out, with stepwise variable selection. RESULTS: Of 2,552 older adults in the overall sample, most (65.8%) were women, with a mean age of 72.3 ± 5.5 years. The worst perception of self-care was associated with non-use of dental care services (OR = 1.48, p < 0.001), income range from 1.1 to 3 times the minimum wage (OR = 1.46, p = 0.049), smoking (OR = 1.41, p = 0.030), sedentary lifestyle (OR = 1.32, p = 0.003), and male gender (OR = 1.24, p = 0.023). CONCLUSION: Although no high frequencies of negative health behaviors were found, the association of poor perception of self-care with modifiable factors, such as sedentary lifestyle and smoking, stands out. Failure to seek dental care continues to be a challenging aspect among the elderly. These results point to a potential subjective indicator for clinical and health research surveys throughout the aging process.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate self-rated health and to identify its relationship with functional capacity, objective measures of muscle strength, and mobility in a sample of community-dwelling elderly adults. METHOD: A cross-sectional, population-based study using data from the "Fragility Study on Brazilian Elderly" (Fibra) electronic database, carried out between 2008 and 2009, in which 2,558 community-dwelling elderly were recruited. The dependent variable was self-rated health compared with peers of the same age, among the elderly. The odd ratios were adjusted for sociodemographic and health variables and were estimated through multinomial logistic regression. The analyses were carried out using the program Stata 14.0. RESULTS: The average age of the elderly participants was 72.3 years old (SD ± 5.5) and 65.6% of them were women. When comparing with someone of the same age, 70.2% of the participants rated their health as better than the other's; 23.4% of them rated it as equal, and 6.4% of the elderly rated it as worse. The adjusted regression model showed that the odd ratios were more important when rating health as worse among the elderly participants who were dependent on instrumental activities (OR = 2.19; 95%CI 1.22–3.92) and had weaker grip strength (OR = 0.96; 95%CI 0.93–0.99). Better health rating showed a statistically significant difference related to speed gait (OR = 0.88; 95%CI 0.81–0.94). CONCLUSION: We found associations between the self-rated health and instrumental activities of daily living, gait velocity, and grip strength. These results reinforce functionality as an important health predictor and broaden self-rated health approachs including social comparison criteria.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviewed studies that relate aspects of double vulnerability (caregivers' physical health, caregivers' self-perceived health, care recipients' dependency and perceived burden) with psychological aspects of caregivers' quality of life. METHODS: The search was conducted in the PubMed, Capes, LILACS, SciELO and AgeLine indexes using keywords in English and their corresponding words in Portuguese. RESULTS: Twenty-three papers were analyzed. With regards to the methods, most articles were made up of transversal studies and included various outcomes. There was a wide age range for the caregivers in the studies' samples, and many of them presented incomplete information about age. CONCLUSION: The results showed that a caregiver's quality of life is affected by several simultaneous variables such as the degree and type of dependency of the elderly person receiving care, the caregiver's health, perceived burden, and positive and negative affects.

Background With aging, some cognitive abilities change because of neurobiological processes. Cognition may also be influenced by psychosocial aspects.

Objective: To describe expressions of ageism as perceived by older persons during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Cross-sectional, exploratory, and descriptive study, including 134 older adults who answered a digital questionnaire, between January and July 2022. A word cloud was used to identify stereotypes. Prejudice was assessed using the Anxiety about Aging scale and discrimination was measured using the Ageism Survey. In addition, a semi-structured questionnaire was used to identify the types of discrimination experienced in the pandemic. Results: Older persons tend to reproduce stereotypes associated with experience and wisdom, with the presence of biopsychosocial changes and dependence, and enjoyment of life. Most older persons reported discrimination (93.50%), especially perceived through “telling jokes about older persons” (72.39%). In the pandemic setting, the most perceived discriminatory manifestations referred to policies, practices, or norms related to the pandemic (38.06%) and when reading and watching news in the newspaper, the Internet, and television (35.07%). Conclusion: The findings suggest that older persons experienced ageism during the pandemic and show the need for programs and policies aimed at education on ageing, so as to reduce the stigmas of old age and discrimination, aiming to foster healthy ageing.

Objectives: To examine a model of associations between cognition, functionality, and life-space mobility, and the mediating role of perceived control and autonomy. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of older adults aged over 72 years, which used data from the FIBRA study. We used the structural equation modeling technique. Variables in this model were cognition, functionality, perceived control and autonomy, and life-space mobility, with sociodemographic and health covariables. Data imputation was done through the expected maximization method aiming at more effective data utilization. This study was funded by Coordenaçãão de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior. Results: The mediation model reached good fit indices. Cognition, functionality, and perceived control and autonomy demonstrated a predictive capacity for life space. Functionality and perceived control and autonomy mediated the relationship between cognition and life space; therefore, cognition influences life space, given its associations with the mediating variables. There was a mediating effect of perceived control and autonomy on the relationship between functionality and life space. Conclusions: Perceived control and autonomy have an adaptive role when considering changes in personal competencies. This adaptation is reflected on life spaces, indicating an adjustment between competence and environment. Studies aimed at promoting a good relationship between an individual and his or her context maintaining life space should consider perceived control and autonomy as important mechanisms in this relationship.

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the direct and indirect effects of chronic pain, depressive symptoms, frailty components, and functional disability through a pathway analysis approach in a sample of community-dwelling older adults. Abstract This study aims to estimate the prevalence of overall satisfaction with life regarding sense of purpose in life, morbidities, and self-reported health, and to identify their direct and indirect associations among the domains in community-dwelling older adults. The research has a cross-sectional design, and we evaluated 419 older adults. Morbidities were assessed using a dichotomous question; self-reported health and satisfaction with life were assessed using a 5-point Likert scale; and sense of purpose was assessed using the Ryff and Keyes 10-item scale. An analysis of structural equations was conducted using Path Analysis. The relationship between morbidities and overall satisfaction with life was mediated by self-reported health; purpose in life mediated the relationship between self-reported health and overall satisfaction with life. Beyond managing chronic illnesses, subjective assessments of health and well-being are key to successful aging.

Objectives: To evaluate an explanatory model of direct and indirect associations regarding the psychological health of older caregivers of functionally dependent older adults. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study performed with older caregivers recruited in contexts of outpatient and home care. We collected information on sociodemographic characteristics, duration of caregiving, physical and cognitive function indicators of the older care recipients, perceived burden, family functioning, and psychological health measures (psychological need satisfaction and depressive symptoms). Results: We evaluated 133 caregivers (76% female, 69.5 ± 6.98 years). Variables that were significantly correlated with psychological health were selected to form an association model to be tested by structural equation modeling via path analysis. Depressive symptom variability was best explained by this model. Caregiver burden remained in the model as a mediator of indirect associations between physical function for instrumental activities of daily living and indicators of family functioning and psychological health. Three associative paths between caregiver burden and depressive symptoms were found — one of them was direct and the other two were mediated whether by family functioning or by the level of psychological need satisfaction. Conclusion: Depressive symptoms were the psychological health indicator best explained by the model involving instrumental functional demands that generate burden. Clinical consequences suggested by the model indicate interventions aimed at family functioning and opportunities of psychological need satisfaction as strategies for promoting caregivers' psychological health.

Introduction: The increase in mobile device users aged > 60 years reflects a transformation in the information and communication technology (ICT) area. Supporting older adults in their digital literacy is a complex task. New skills for the digital age should be developed. Objective: To describe the sociodemographic characteristics of older adults on a digital literacy program, including patterns of use, reasons for learning, in addition to the difficulties and benefits reported regarding the use of technology. Methodology: A quantitative and qualitative study based on a digital literacy program within a U3A context involving professionals in the fields of gerontology and computing was conducted. Result: The program involved 317 older adults, most of whom were women (64.5%). Mean age of participants was 60-74 years (82%). Regarding characteristics, 44.2% were married, 40.7% had finished high school, 77.3% were retired, 65.1% earned ≤ 4 minimum wages, and 74.1% were not engaged in paid employment. Prior to participation, despite the high frequency of smartphone use (87.6%), 77.9% reported having a poor user experience. The most prevalent purposes for using smartphones were “Communication” (93.3%), “Strengthening affectional bonds with family and friends” (66.2%) and “Search for general information” (48.7%). The assessment of self-efficacy revealed that participants lacked competence for complex activities. Conclusion: The interest of older Brazilians in using smartphones is clear. Therefore, understanding previous competencies, as well as the obstacles faced by this group, is pivotal in aiding the process of digital inclusion.

Abstract The aims of the present study were to estimate the frequency of change in self-rated health (SRH) among community-dwelling older adults, between two measures taken at a 9-year interval; and determine factors associated with a decline and an improvement in SRH, in relation to aspects of physical/emotional health and subjective wellbeing. Data were derived from a community-based study on frailty among Brazilian elderly. Associations were investigated using Pearson’s chi-square test and relative risk ratios were estimated using multinomial logistic regression analysis. 39.3% of participants did not change their SRH at both assessment times, 21.7% rated it as worse and 39.0% rated it as better. The relative risk ratio of an improvement in SRH for individuals with disability in basic activities of daily living (ADLs) was lower than for individuals with independence in basic ADLs (IRR=0.22; IC95%: 0.08-0.63). Understanding the complex interactions between self-rated health and the dimensions that influence the improvement of health perception may shed light on key determinants of the wellbeing among older adults.

ABSTRACT. The concept Awareness of Age-Related Change (AARC) is defined as a person’s awareness that their behavior, level of physical, cognitive and social performance, and ways of experiencing life have changed as a consequence of having grown older, and not because of disease. Objective: A psychometric study investigating evidence of construct validity and internal consistency of the Portuguese version of the AARC Short Scale was carried out. Method: A convenience sample of 387 individuals aged≥60 years with no deficit suggestive of dementia were recruited at venues frequented by older persons and at households. Participants answered the Portuguese version of the scale, along with questionnaires collecting sociodemographic and frailty variables and self-rated health based on personal criteria and relative to peers. Results: Exploratory and confirmatory factorial analyses derived a structure with two orthogonal factors representing the latent variables gains and losses, invariant for age group, thus replicating the original scale. The factors explained a large proportion of item variability (58.6 to 51.8%) and exhibited high loadings (0.886 to 0.432) and good communality [0.787 for item 4 (better sense of what is important) and 0.369 for item 6 (less energy)]. The hypotheses of covariance between the new instrument and the parallel measures of frailty and self-rated health were confirmed. The levels of internal consistency were high (α>0.700). Conclusion: Evidence confirmed the factor and convergent (construct) validity and internal consistency of the new scale in Portuguese.

ABSTRACT Background: The link between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment has not yet been thoroughly evaluated, especially among older adults. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between probable sarcopenia and cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults in two Brazilian cities. Methods: Probable sarcopenia was assessed using the EWGSOP2 (2018) criteria. Thus, participants were classified as probably having sarcopenia if they had SARC-F (Strength, Assistance in walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs and Falls) ≥4 points and low grip strength. Cognitive function was evaluated through the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), verbal fluency (VF) and clock drawing test (CDT). Results: In a sample of 529 older adults (mean age 80.8±4.9 years; mean education 4.2±3.67 years; 70.1% women), 27.3% of the participants had SARC-F≥4, 38.3% had low grip strength and 13.6% were classified as probable sarcopenia cases. After adjusting for possible confounders (age, sex, education, depression, diabetes, hypertension, leisure-time physical activity and obesity), probable sarcopenia was found to be associated with impairment in the MMSE (OR 2.52; 95%CI 1.42‒4.47; p=0.002) and in VF (OR 2.17; 95%CI 1.17‒4.01; p=0.014). Low grip strength was found to be associated with impairment in the MMSE (OR 1.83; 95%CI 1.18‒2.82; p=0.006) and in the CDT (OR 1.79; 95%CI 1.18‒2.73; p=0.006). SARC-F scores were found to be associated with impairment in the MMSE (OR 1.90; 95%CI 1.18‒3.06; p=0.008). Conclusion: The results suggested that probable sarcopenia and its components present a significant association with cognitive deficits among community-dwelling older adults. Future longitudinal studies will further explore the causal relationship.

Resumo Objetivo Identificar a presença de sintomas de incontinência urinária (IU) e testar um modelo de associações diretas e indiretas com as variáveis psicossociais senso de controle/autonomia e participação social em idosos residentes na comunidade. Método Estudo transversal, realizado com 419 idosos de 72 anos ou mais (70,2% feminino) participantes das medidas de seguimento do Estudo Fibra-Polo Unicamp. Idade, sexo e escolaridade foram as variáveis sociodemográficas selecionadas como antecedentes das relações entre IU e participação social. Senso pessoal de controle e autonomia foi testado como mediador dessas relações em análise de caminhos via método de equações estruturais (Path Analysis). Resultados A IU foi relatada por 38% da amostra, com diferenças significativas entre os sexos (41% feminino versus 31,3% masculino). Foram propostos três níveis de participação social a partir do grau de envolvimento dos indivíduos com a sociedade. O modelo de associações explicou 15% da variância em participação social. Efeitos diretos foram encontrados entre controle e autonomia e participação social. Efeitos indiretos entre escolaridade e participação foram mediados pela presença de IU. Conclusão IU contribuiu para a restrição em participação social em todos os níveis. Controle e autonomia não se mostrou um mediador psicológico para as relações entre IU e participação, embora associada a ambas variáveis. A presença de IU potencializou as relações desvantajosas entre escolaridade e participação social. Enquanto fatores de natureza modificável, iniciativas clínicas e psicossociais sobre IU podem resultar em diminuição de efeitos psicológicos negativos e redução de desigualdades educacionais em participação social.

Resumo Objetivo Investigar a incidência e variáveis associadas à estabilidade e à mudança da satisfação com a vida (SV) em medidas de linha de base (LB) e seguimento (SG) realizadas a um intervalo de nove anos, em idosos recrutados na comunidade. Método Estudo longitudinal prospectivo com dados da LB (2008-2009) e do SG (2016-2017) do Estudo Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros, envolvendo 360 idosos com 71,7±5,0 anos na LB (68,9% mulheres). Foram calculadas associações entre variáveis sociodemográficas, indicadores objetivos e subjetivos de saúde e variáveis psicossociais em LB e a incidência de estabilidade e mudança em SV no SG. Resultados Nove anos depois da LB, foram observadas: maior incidência de estabilidade (61,1%) do que de piora (26,4%) ou melhora (12,5%) da SV; menor incidência de piora no grupo de 80 anos e mais do que no de 70 a 79; maior incidência de mudança do que estabilidade da SV entre os idosos com multimorbidades e com pontuação > 6 em sintomas depressivos; maior incidência de piora da SV entre os idosos com baixos níveis de autoavaliação de saúde (risco relativo; RR=2,26) e de satisfação com a memória (RR=2,33). Conclusões A incidência de estabilidade em SV em idosos foi mais frequente do que a de piora ou melhora. Indicadores subjetivos de saúde física e satisfação com a memória podem ser sinalizadores de deterioração em bem-estar no tempo e sintomas depressivos de instabilidade nas avaliações, possivelmente acompanhando a redução ou o aumento da SV. Foi observada considerável heterogeneidade nas manifestações de SV entre idosos.

Abstract This study aimed to identify predictive factors for subjective and psychological well-being in a sample of 265 older adults enrolled in the University of the Third Age (U3A). The scales used were: General Satisfaction with Life Scale and referenced to the domains, Positive and Negative Affect Scale and Personal Development Scale. Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that being 70 or older and male was associated with the subjective well-being and having higher education level was associated with psychological well-being. It was concluded that sociodemographic characteristics of the interviewed elders enrolled in U3A can be important attributes that influence well-being.

Introduction: Self-rated health is a multidimensional health indicator and a predictor of adverse events in old age. Answers to this assessment are influenced by social, cultural and personality factors.Aim: Exploring common and distinctive characteristics of Brazilian and Portuguese older adults aged 70 and over regarding positive self-rated health according to sociodemographic variables, to functional capacity, to independent performance of basic activities of daily living and to neuroticism, as well as analyzing associations between positive self-rated health and these variables.Methods: The present paper is a comparative and cross-sectional study based on secondary data contained in the databases of the FIBRA (Frailty in Brazilian Older Adults) follow-up study, with 418 Brazilian older adults, and of the DIA (From Disability to Activity: The Challenge of Aging) study, with 380 Portuguese older adults. Both samples had higher percentages of women: 68.4% for Portugal and 69.9% for Brazil. The Brazilian sample had a higher average age (80.31 ± 4.67) than the Portuguese sample (76.80 ± 5.28).Results: The Portuguese older adults had better overall cognition scores, higher handgrip strength and higher neuroticism values than the Brazilian older adults. In the simple and multiple logistic regression analyses, it was found that among Brazilian older adults, subjects with higher scores in the MMSE (OR 1.16; 95% CI 1.08–1.24), regardless of ADL performance (OR 2.13; 95% CI 1.31–3.47) and with scores 24–29 (OR 1.92; 95% CI 1.07–3.43) or 11–23 (OR 2.09; 95% CI 1.15–3.79) in neuroticism were more likely to assess their health as very good/good. On the other hand, the Portuguese older adults with intermediate 24–9 (OR 2.38; 95% CI 1.31–4.33) or low 11–23 (OR 5.31; 95% CI 2.69–10.45) scores in neuroticism were more likely to evaluate their health as very good/good.Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study and on the existing literature, it may be said that it is possible for people to age while keeping a positive perception of their own health, even in advanced old age; comparisons between the above-mentioned countries, however, point to the need for investments in healthcare systems so that older adults may enjoy greater physical independence and improved mental health.

Digital literacy programmes for the elderly propose to expand digital skills and competences; yet, knowledge about the methodological and teaching approaches in these interventions is scarce. The study aimed to verify the optimising factors in the teaching-learning process in digital literacy programmes for older adults, based on students’ perceptions. Using the content analysis technique, two main categories were identified among the contributions of 278 participants. It was concluded that the human aspects should be valued by the instructors in the teaching-learning process for older-adult students, mainly, by demonstrating the qualities of being patient, calm and attentive.

Os programas de letramento digital para idosos propõem ampliar as habilidades e competências digitais, porém os conhecimentos sobre as abordagens metodológicas e de ensino nestas intervenções são escassos. O estudo objetivou verificar os fatores otimizadores no processo de ensino-aprendizagem em programas de letramento digital para idosos, a partir das percepções de alunos. Utilizando-se a técnica de análise de conteúdo, duas categorias principais foram identificadas entre as emissões de 278 participantes. Conclui-se que os aspectos humanos devem ser valorizados pelos instrutores no processo de ensino-aprendizagem para alunos idosos, principalmente, demonstrar as qualidades de ser paciente, calmo e atencioso.

Abstract Objective: To identify if multimorbidity and burden are associated with a greater likelihood of frailty in elderly caregivers of other elderly persons within the family context. Method: 148 elderly caregivers caring for other elderly persons [M=69.7 (±7.0) years old] were recruited using a criterion of convenience in public and private health services in the city of Campinas and surrounding areas. Information was gathered about socio-demographic context, context of care, physical health, care burden using the Zarit Burden Scale, and frailty, measured by subjective evaluation. Four groups of vulnerability were created based on the presence or absence of multimorbidities and high or low burden, in order to verify which group was most strongly associated with frailty. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, measurements of association and multivariate hierarchical logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of multimorbidity was 55.4%. The Zarit Burden Scale presented a median of 23 out of a total of 88 points. Of the sample, 35.1% were frail, 46.0% intermediate, and 18.9% robust. Elderly caregivers with multimorbidity and high burden had a greater probability of frailty (OR=3.6; CI 1.55-8.36), followed by those with multimorbidity and low burden (OR=2.8; CI 1.13-6.79). Conclusion: The sensation of burden among caregivers was reduced; those with double vulnerability were most prevalent among the four groups and had the greatest association with the occurrence of frailty; multimorbidity was associated with frailty. If combined with perceived burden, however, the odds ratios of the elderly caregivers being frail increased.

Abstract Objective: to compare the life satisfaction of family caregivers, taking into account their gender, age, time since starting care, health, religion, perceived burden and quality of life, and the level of physical and cognitive dependence of the elderly person receiving care, and to investigate the associations between these variables and low life satisfaction. Methods: a total of 148 caregivers in Indaiatuba and Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, selected using the convenience method, were interviewed at home, in private medical clinics and outpatient units, using questionnaires about the sociodemographic characteristics, health conditions, time since starting care, scales of life satisfaction, religiosity, perceived burden and quality of life of the caregiver, and the physical and mental health of the elderly person receiving care. Descriptive, Multivariate and Univariate Logistic Regression analysis were used. Results: caregivers who exhibited low life satisfaction included more frail individuals, with three or more chronic diseases and depression, greater perceived burden and lower self-fulfillment and pleasure, and control and autonomy, scores, which are factors of the Perceived Quality of Life Scale. Elderly caregivers who scored low in self-fulfillment factor and pleasure (OR=101.29; CI=28.68 - 357.73) and who scored high in perceived burden (OR=5.89, CI=2.13 to 16.24) had a greater chance of having low life satisfaction scores. Conclusions: The assessment of caregivers of their satisfaction with life is more influenced by subjective than objective variables, and low satisfaction seems to be strongly associated with poor quality of life, high burden, and caregiver frailty.

Abstract Objective: The present study aimed to analyze the distribution of measures of subjective and psychological well-being according to demographic criteria and length of participation in the program. Method: A cross sectional study using the following instruments was carried out: a sociodemographic questionnaire (age, gender, education, length of participation in University of the Third Age (U3A) and similar programs located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil; an Overall Life Satisfaction Scale; a Life Satisfaction Scale that contemplated four domains: health, physical capacity, mental capacity and social involvement; a Positive/Negative Affect Scale; and a Personal Development Scale. The data were analyzed by the chi-squared test (for comparison of categorical variables), the Mann-Whitney and the Kruskal-Wallis U tests (for comparison of continuous variables). Results: Age and gender were the main factors that were significantly associated with overall life satisfaction, life satisfaction in specific domains, and morale. Higher education was associated with psychological adjustment. Conclusion: Participating in a U3A contributes to high levels of subjective and psychological well-being. Elderly individuals of more advanced ages and men had higher rates of satisfaction with life and positive feelings. The elderly can assess their development trajectory, their commitment to society and consider their efforts in pursuing an ideal of personal excellence.

Abstract Objective : To evaluate the association between the double vulnerability of being elderly and a caregiver and quality of life assessed by Control, Autonomy, Self-realization and Pleasure factors (CASP-19). Method : 148 elderly caregivers participated in the present study. They were selected for convenience from Brazilian public and private health services - a sample from the study “The Psychological Well-Being of Elderly Persons Caring for Other Elderly Persons in a Family Context”. The variables: caregiver’s state of health, care demands, perception of burden, self-rated health, and quality of life were selected. Descriptive analyses, chi-squared tests, Fisher’s exact test, the Kruskal-Wallis test and analysis of multivariate hierarchical logistics were carried out, with theStepwisecriteria applied for selection of variables. Results : The hierarchical multivariate analyses found that number of symptoms and total burden were significantly associated with a poorer quality of life. Elderly persons with three or more symptoms and those with a high burden level were at a higher risk of poor quality of life. The variables number of diseases, burden, and self-rated health compared with the past, were significantly associated with a poorer quality of life. Conclusion : It can be concluded that for the elderly caregiver, physical aspects (signs and symptoms, chronic diseases and a perception of health deterioration) combined with burden are the aspects that most influence quality of life.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To identify factors associated with perceived quality of life in a representative national sample of the population aged 50 or over. METHODS Data from 7,651 participants of the baseline ELSI-Brazil (Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging), conducted between 2015 and 2016, were used. The perceived quality of life was measured by the CASP-19 scale - (CASP - control, autonomy, self-fulfillment and pleasure), considering the highest tertile as good quality of life. The independent variables included socio-demographic characteristics, mobility, loneliness, and indicators of sociability (social network, social support and social participation). The associations were tested using multivariate Poisson regression. RESULTS The best perceived quality of life showed a positive and independent association with the frequency of contacts with friends (PR = 1.25 for at least once every 2–3 months and PR = 1.36 for at least once a week), instrumental support from spouse or partner in the household (PR = 1.69), and emotional support from other relatives (PR = 1.45), children or children in law (PR = 1.41) and spouse or partner (PR = 1.33). Negative associations were observed for participants aged 80 and over (RP = 0.77), with 4 to 7 or 8 or more years of schooling (PR = 0.78 and 0.75, respectively) and with difficulty in mobility (PR = 0.83). CONCLUSIONS In addition to age and schooling, mobility, sociability and instrumental and emotional support are associated with perceived quality of life among older Brazilian adults. These characteristics must be considered when actions are taken, aiming to promote quality of life in this population.

Os objetivos foram investigar indicadores psicométricos de validade de nova versão da CASP-19 para brasileiros com 55 anos e mais e estudar relações entre pontuações na escala e sexo, idade, escolaridade e status conjugal. Trezentos e sessenta e oito frequentadores de programas educacionais para a 3ª idade responderam à CASP-19 (controle, autonomia, autorrealização e prazer), traduzida e adaptada do inglês por cinco especialistas e testada em 19 mulheres (α = 0,730). Os dados foram submetidos a análises fatoriais exploratórias (AFE) e confirmatórias (AFC) pelo método de equações estruturais para variáveis latentes; de consistência interna e de correlação com instrumentos de conteúdo similar. Foram comparadas as pontuações dos grupos de sexo, idade, escolaridade e status conjugal. AFC produziram modelo com 19 itens e 2 fatores (autorrealização/prazer e controle/autonomia), com bons índices de ajustamento (GFI = 0,8; AGFI = 0,7606; CFI = 0,7241; NNFI = 0,6876; SRMR = 0.0902; RMSEA = 0,0928; IC90%: 0,0827-0,1031). Os α de Cronbach foram 0,837 para o fator 1 e 0,670 para o 2; 0,874 na escala total para os de 9 anos ou mais de escolaridade, 0,834 para os de 5 a 8 anos e 0,772 para os de 1 a 4 anos. Foram observadas correlações altas e significativas com os escores em escalas de satisfação e felicidade subjetiva. Homens tiveram pontuação mais alta em autorrealização/prazer do que mulheres; os mais velhos e os mais escolarizados, pontuação mais baixa em controle/autonomia; os sem cônjuge, mais alta em controle/autonomia. A nova versão da CASP-19 foi eficaz para avaliar a qualidade de vida percebida em indivíduos de 55 anos e mais, residentes nas regiões Sudeste, Sul e Nordeste do país.

Indicadores de atitudes etárias representados por categorização e identificação etária e suas relações com variáveis sociodemográficas e de saúde física e emocional foram investigados entre idosos residentes na comunidade. A amostra foi composta por 302 idosos participantes do Estudo FIBRA - Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros (Pólo Universidade Estadual de Campinas [Unicamp]; M = 72,3 anos; DP = 5,76; 64,6% mulheres), com escolaridade média de 3,32 anos (DP = 2,61) e renda de um a três salários mínimos (53,7%). A existência e atribuição de idade para início da velhice foram tomadas como indicadoras de categorização etária e o autorrelato de sentir-se idoso indicou identificação etária. Embora a maior parte dos idosos tenha atribuído uma idade para esse início (M = 62,3 anos; DP = 14,66), a maioria (60,3%) não se identificou como pertencente a essa categoria etária. Escolaridade, fragilidade e satisfação com a vida revelaram ser importantes preditores dessas atitudes em relação à velhice.

Este estudo teve por objetivo investigar as crenças sobre o que é ser um bom cuidador profissional de idosos dependentes no contexto domiciliar. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório, descritivo e transversal. A amostra foi composta por 59 cuidadores profissionais de idosos, recrutados por conveniência. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas utilizando um questionário elaborado a partir da revisão bibliográfica. Para análise dos dados, utilizou-se a análise de conteúdo proposta por Bardin (1977/2000). As categorias foram classificadas a partir de três elementos da competência profissional, a saber: conhecimento, habilidades e atitudes. O maior número de variáveis que caracteriza o que é ser um bom cuidador profissional de idosos no contexto domiciliar está na categoria atitudes. A subcategoria mais relatada foi a demonstração de afetos com 55 unidades de análise (39%). A categoria conhecimento gerou três subcategorias, sendo a mais destacada, os “procedimentos técnicos” com 33 (50,8%) unidades de análise. Na categoria relacionada às atitudes, a subcategoria destacada foi a realização profissional. Os resultados obtidos sugerem a necessidade de aprimorar o processo de capacitação dos cuidadores formais de idosos, refletindo-se sobre a heterogeneidade e as múltiplas dimensões da velhice, visando promover a melhoria da capacidade funcional dos idosos dependentes. Também, é crucial favorecer reflexões acerca dos estigmas, estereótipos e preconceitos relacionados à velhice; superar as deficiências técnicas e fortalecer a identidade do profissional cuidador.

Habilidades de Resolução de Problemas (RP) e indicadores de estresse e ansiedade foram avaliados entre 35 cuidadores formais de idosos que compõem equipes de enfermagem em Instituições de Longa Permanência para Idosos. Embora a maior parte da amostra tenha apresentado estilos adaptativos de RP e bons indicadores de saúde emocional, encontraram-se correlações positivas entre orientação atitudinal negativa ao problema e a predominância de estilos não-adaptativos de RP (Impulsivo/Descuidado) com presença de ansiedade, corroborando estudos já realizados com cuidadores informais.

The study aimed to examine the relationship between the skills of problem solving (PS) of caregivers for elderly and the level of burden/stress experienced in care. The sample responded to a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Zarit Burden Interview and the Problem-Solving Test and reported moderate levels of burden/stress and a tendency to positive orientation and rational style of PS. Male gender was associated with impulsive style of PS and higher burden/stress with avoidant style.

It is known that learning refers to how beings acquire new knowledge, develop skills and change behavior. Thus, knowing the learning styles of individuals is important, both for those who learn how to teach. In this sense, this research project aimed to describe the sociodemographic characteristics of the sample, identify the predominant learning styles of these individuals and see if there is a correlation between learning styles with sociodemographic variables. The sample consisted of 248 elderly participants in the study "Continuing Education - Benefits of the Open University of the Third Age EACH USP", funded by the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Teixeira (INEP)| Ministry of Education. We used a protocol that included sociodemographic questionnaire and the Learning Style Inventory (Learning Style Inventory - LSI) by David A. Kolb. Descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The dominant learning style was the assimilator and identified the association between learning styles of older people and sex (p = 0.0372), age (p = 0.0450), schooling for males (p = 0.0155) and sex for seniors with even the elementary school level (p = 0.0166). The results of this study are in line with theoretical perspectives and findings in the literature with regard to sample characteristics and learning styles identified. Future studies should be conducted in order to investigate more about the topic of learning in the elderly.

This paper reviews the major theoretical perspectives that support the initiatives of continuing education as potential sources of social interaction and well beingin old age. Based on the constructs of Subjective Well-Being (SWB) and Psychological Well-Being (BEP), were analyzed the possible causal relationships between the living and learning in old age on these indicators.

Objetivou-se comparar as características das redes de suporte social de homens e mulheres quanto ao tamanho de rede, frequência de contatos e funções desempenhadas pela família. Trata-se de estudo prospectivo, de caráter sociométrico com 243 idosos de Universidade a Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade. Utilizou-se o Mapa Mínimo de Relações do Idoso. Houve semelhança entre os sexos nas médias do quadrante da família, total de registros na maioria das funções, exceto no auxílio às atividades domésticas, índices de suporte social. O tamanho de rede social foi similar nas redes pequenas, médias e grandes. No quadrante família, quase todas as funções apresentaram os mesmos valores. Para esta população, ambos possuem aspectos da rede de suporte social semelhantes, não apresentando diferenças significativas.

Este estudo investigou se a participação de idosos em uma Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade (UnATI) pode contribuir para a manutenção do desempenho cognitivo. Foram entrevistados 180 idosos no início do primeiro ou do segundo semestres de 2010 e após seis meses de participação. Foram utilizadas questões sociodemográficas, a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica, o Mini-Exame do Estado Mental, a Fluência Verbal categoria animais, o Short Cognitive Test e o tempo de participação na UnATI EACH-USP. Os resultados do pré-teste confirmaram dados prévios sobre o impacto da escolaridade, idade e renda no desempenho cognitivo. Os dados de evolução indicaram que os idosos apresentaram melhor desempenho em tarefa de memória episódica no pós-teste. Os dados sugerem que a participação na UNATI pode favorecer a manutenção das habilidades cognitivas.

Concepts and attribution of cause of depression and its relationship withsociodemographics variables and physical and mental health were investigated among 35elderly (M = 66.9 years, SD = 5.73, 65.7% female) participating in an Open University toSeniors. Data were collected by questionnaire about sociodemographics variables, perceivedhealth, depressive symptoms, concepts, causes and search for treatment for depression.Depression was defined as "behavioral symptoms" (37.7%), "Psychological status" (35.9%),"Physical illness" (18.9%) and "Moral/psychological weakness" (7.5%) and its causes assignedto the "Events psychosocial" (30.1%), "Personality" (25.4%), "Frustration" (20.6%) and"Losses" (23.9%). The term "Behavioral Symptoms" was more prevalent among more youngerpeople and the attribution to "losses" among the worst health. Prevention and treatment musttake into account the beliefs of the elderly and include patient education.

The study examined the psychometric indicators of validity and reliability ofEmotional Expression Questionnaire (EEQ; Gross & John, 1995) applied to Brazilian elderly. In addition, was examined the relationship between the EEQ and sociodemographic indicators of emotional experience and depressive symptoms. The sample was consisted of 256 elderly of an Open University of the Third Age with mean age 67 years (+ 5.54). The EEQ was subjected to retesting with sub-sample of 150 elderly and indicated moderate correlation coeficiente (>.60). The exploratory factor analysis replicated the original domains that the instrument is also derived from the alpha of Cronbach coeficiente (.73). The highest mean scores of the elderly were in positive expressiveness and strength of the impulse. Gender, income, education and marital status, depression and affective experience generated individual differences in emotional expressiveness. The instrument reveals good psychometric indicators and revealed the maintenance of the emotional domains in old age.

The aim of the study is to describe the social support network of participants from the Third Age Open University, School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of Sao Paulo. Methods: The study was cross sectional, with a population of 117 elderly. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the instrument graphics Minimum Map of Elderly Affairs (MMRI), which identifies the size of the social support network, establishing levels of social support from the frequency of contacts received, for the functions assessed: visits, companionship, help in household chores, personal care and financial assistance. Seniors who participated in the study agreed with that by signing an informed consent and informed consent. Data were entered in the program Epidata and statistically analyzed using SPSS, version 17.0 Results: Most women (78%), married (53%), retired (82%) with mean age of 65.32 (SD = 7.02). Predominance of social support was of medium size, characterized by 16.80 (SD = 4.48). Stratified by age, older people had smaller social network and fewer social contacts. Elderly patients with stable compared to the unmarried, had larger social support network. Correlating data on age, income, social supports, it was observed that the higher family income, greater social support network. The results show that the social support decreases with the aging process. The variables of income and marital status factors act as modulators, contributing to the maintenance or decline of the network of relationships.

Examinou-se indicadores psicométricos do Questionário de Regulação Emocional (QRE) e suas relações com medidas de experiência afetiva, satisfação com a vida e depressão em idosos. Cento e cinquenta e três idosos (M= 66,8 anos; DP=±5,20, 71,2% feminino) de uma Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade responderam ao QRE, ao Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) e à escala satisfação com a vida e de depressão (GDS-15). Dois fatores (Reavaliação Cognitiva; Supressão Emocional) explicaram 50,1% da variância e os índices de consistência interna e de estabilidade temporal foram acima de 0,70. Houve relações positivas entre Reavaliação Cognitiva, satisfação com a vida e afetos positivos e relações negativas com depressão. Maior uso da Reavaliação Cognitiva é indicativo de saúde emocional em idosos.We examined psychometric indicators of the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and their relationship with measures of affective experience, satisfaction with life and depression in the elderly. One hundred and fifty-three elderly people (M = 66.8 years, SD = 5.20, 71.2% female) of an Open University for Seniors responded to the ERQ, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Life Satisfaction Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Two factors (Cognitive Reappraisal and Emotional Suppression) explained 50.1% of variance; internal consistency and temporal stability were above .70. There were positive relations between Cognitive Reappraisal and life satisfaction and positive affect; and there were negative relations with depression. Increased use of Cognitive Reappraisal is an indication of emotional health in the elderly.

Abstract The relationship between the presence of depression, as measured by total score on the GDS-15 scale, and both pre-frailty and frailty status in community-dwelling elderly was determined. Two thousand four hundred and two elderly residents from seven Brazilian cities (M = 72.3 years, SD = 5.5; 66 % female) were evaluated according to the five criteria comprising the frailty phenotype. Participants answered a self-report inventory of diseases, of performance on advanced and instrumental activities of daily living, and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). The number and types of depressive symptoms were found to be higher among frail and pre-frail elderly. Thus, besides variability in depression prevalence among the frailty profiles there were also characteristic depressive symptoms for each profile of the syndrome.

O artigo traz uma revisão teórica a respeito do conceito “idade subjetiva” a partir de evidências da literatura internacional sobre suas relações com indicadores de envelhecimento bem-sucedido. A partir de estudos derivados da perspectiva life span e life course em Psicologia e Sociologia, os estudos sobre idade subjetiva revelam associações significativas desta com medidas de bem-estar físico e subjetivo, o que pode ser considerado uma variável importante na pesquisa e um potencial indicador clínico.El artículo presenta una revisión teórica sobre el concepto "edad subjetiva" y pruebas de la literatura internacional sobre las relaciones con los indicadores del envejecimiento exitoso. De los estudios derivados de la perspectiva life span y life course en psicología y sociología, edad subjetiva mostró asociaciones significativas con las medidas de bienestar físico y subjetivo y puede considerarse una variable importante en la investigación clínica y como un potencial indicador clínico.The article presents a theoretical review on the concept "subjective age" and evidences from the international literature on its relationship with indicators of successful aging. From the studies derived from the life span and life course perspectives in psychology and sociology, subjective age showed significant associations with measures of physical well-being and subjective, which can be considered an important variable in clinical research and a potential clinical indicator.

OBJETIVO: Identificar fatores sociodemográficos associados a padrões de incidência, remissão e estabilidade de sintomas depressivos entre idosos residentes na comunidade. MÉTODOS: Estudo prospectivo em que foram entrevistados 310 idosos residentes na comunidade, em Juiz de Fora, MG, entre 2002 e 2004. O seguimento (T2) foi realizado 15,7 meses após a primeira entrevista (T1). Os sintomas de depressão foram avaliados pela escala do Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression. Os idosos foram classificados segundo a evolução dos sintomas de depressão e comparados quanto às variáveis sociodemográficas com o teste de qui-quadrado e Exato de Fisher. RESULTADOS: Não houve diferenças na prevalência de sintomas depressivos entre T1 e T2 (33,8%). Foram identificados quatro grupos segundo a evolução dos sintomas da primeira para a segunda medida: livres de depressão (50,9%); recorrência (19,7%); incidência (15,2%); remissão (14,2%). Ter pontuado para depressão em T1, ser do sexo feminino e possuir baixa escolaridade representaram riscos para a manifestação de sintomas depressivos em T2. CONCLUSÕES: Piores trajetórias de evolução em sintomatologia depressiva (incidência e recorrência) associaram-se ao gênero feminino.

Foram identificados indicadores de validade de construto e de confiabilidade interna para a Center for Epidemiological Scale-Depression (CES-D) aplicada a idosos recrutados na comunidade, em um estudo que envolveu duas medidas sucessivas. A amostra foi composta de 347 idosos (73% mulheres) com idade média de 71,96 anos (DP=8,45), os quais foram submetidos à versão brasileira da CES-D em duas ocasiões, com um tempo médio de 15,7 meses (DP=4,57) entre as medidas. Os dados da segunda medida da CES-D foram submetidos à análise fatorial confirmatória, que revelou adequação do ajuste do modelo anterior com três fatores ("afetos negativos", "dificuldades de iniciar comportamentos", "afetos positivos"). O índice de consistência interna foi 0,82 para a escala, 0,77 para o fator 1, 0,59 para o fator 2 e 0,47 para o fator 3. A prevalência de depressão foi a mesma nas duas medidas (34%).Construct validity and internal reliability concerning the Center for Epidemiological Study-Depression (CES-D) were described in a prospective study with elderly people living in the community. The sample consisted of 347 elderly adults (73% women), 71.96 years old in average (SD=8.45), which were submitted to two measures of depressive symptoms through the CES-D. The mean time between measures was 15.7 months (SD=4.57). Confirmatory factorial analysis performed on the second measure revealed the same factors identified in the first measure ("negative affection", "difficulty in initiating behaviors" and "positive affection"). Cronbach alpha was 0.82 for the scale, and 0.77, 0.59 and 0.47, respectively for factors 1, 2, and 3. Prevalence of depressive symptoms was consistent in both measures (34%).

INTRODUCTION: Studies document a change in memory during the process of aging. However, studies report the possibility of improvement after training. OBJECTIVE: To replicate international findings regarding the effects of memory training with a sample of Brazilian elders and to investigate mechanisms, such as the use of strategies, that can explain its benefits. METHODS: 69 healthy Brazilian elders were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), and received four sessions of training (CG received training after pos-test). Training included information on memory and the process of aging, instruction and practice in organizing grocery lists and the underlining of main ideas in short texts. RESULTS: There was superior improvement for prose recall and greater use of strategies (organizing lists and underlining texts) for the EG at post-test. Both groups reported fewer memory complaints (assessed with the MAC-Q) and faster information processing (WAIS-R Digit Symbols sub-test). CONCLUSIONS: After training, elders intensify the use of strategies, however, this fact does not guarantee a better performance (there was no significant improvement in list recalls). List recall results suggest the presence of the utilization deficiency: elders used the strategy but failed to benefit from it.

INTRODUÇÃO: Pesquisas documentam declínio na memória ao longo do envelhecimento, entretanto, estudos apontam que o treino gera um aumento significativo no desempenho de idosos. OBJETIVO: Replicar resultados internacionais referentes a treino de memória com uma amostra brasileira de idosos saudáveis e investigar mecanismos, como o uso de estratégias, que possam explicar seus benefícios. MÉTODO: 69 idosos saudáveis, sub-divididos em grupo experimental (GE) e grupo controle (GC), receberam quatro sessões de treino de memória (GC recebeu o treino após o pós-teste). O treino ofereceu informações sobre memória e envelhecimento, instrução e prática em organização de listas de supermercado e grifo de idéias principais em textos. RESULTADOS: No pós-teste o GE apresentou melhor desempenho na recordação de texto e maior uso de estratégias (organização da lista e uso de grifo). Os dois grupos relataram menor número de queixas (medidas através do MAC-Q) e processamento de informações mais rápido (símbolos do WAIS-R) no pós-teste. CONCLUSÕES: Após o treino, os idosos fazem uso mais intenso de estratégias de memória, mas este fato não garante melhor desempenho (não houve aumento na memorização da lista). This study aimed to characterize the pedagogical strategies used in educational activities on a continuing education program for seniors. It is an exploratory and descriptive study with the participation of 82 teachers/instructors. The responses related to what facilitates learning of the elderly have generated three groups of responses: Category 1. Problematizing Participant Pedagogy; Category 2. Cognitive strategies considering the declines associated with age; Category 3. Pedagogy of Transmission. It was concluded that during the educational process, an active and critical appropriation must be encouraged, instead of the static accumulation of knowledge on the part of the elderly.

O estudo buscou caracterizar as estratégias pedagógicas utilizadas nas atividades educativas em um programa de educação permanente para idosos. O estudo é de caráter exploratório-descritivo, com participação de 82 professores/monitores. As emissões referentes ao que facilita a aprendizagem da pessoa idosa geraram três grupos de respostas: Categoria 1. Pedagogia Participativa Problematizadora; Categoria 2. Estratégias cognitivas considerando os declínios associados à idade; Categoria 3. Pedagogia da Transmissão. Concluiu-se que durante o processo educacional, deve-se encorajar uma apropriação ativa e crítica, em vez do acúmulo estático de conhecimento por parte das pessoas idosas.

ABSTRACT. Background: There are few studies on the qualitative variables derived from the animal category verbal fluency test (VF), especially with data originating from low-income samples of community-based studies. Objective: To compare elderly with and without hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) regarding the total number of animals spoken, number of categories, groups and category switches on the VF test. Methods: We used the database of the FIBRA (Frailty in Brazilian Elderly) community-based study. The variables number of Categories, Groups and Category Switches were created for each participant. The total sample (n = 384) was divided into groups of elderly who reported having HTN, DM, both HTN and DM, or neither of these conditions. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups with and without these chronic diseases for VF total score or for the qualitative variables. Conclusion: Among independent community-dwelling elderly, the qualitative variables derived from the VF animal category may not add information regarding the cognitive profile of elderly with chronic diseases. Total VF score and the qualitative variables Category, Group and Switching did not differentiate elderly with and without HTN and DM.

Abstract Although the prevalence of depressive disorders among the elderly is lower than among the younger population, the presence of significant symptoms of depression is common in this group. Studies report that participation in social, educational and leisure activities is related to fewer depressive symptoms in this population. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of depression among elderly participants of an Open University for the Third Age, in terms of the time studying. Methods: The study had a cross-sectional design and the participation of 95.2% (n=184) of total enrollers in the first half of 2010 on the activities of the Third Age Open University's School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of São Paulo. All participants answered a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Results: An association between studying time of over one semester at the University of the Third Age and a lower rate of depressive symptoms, was observed. Conclusion: Study time of over one semester was associated with less depressive symptoms, acting as a possible protective factor against depression.
