ESA's PLATO mission aims the detection and characterization of terrestrial planets around solar-type stars as well as the study of host star properties. The noise-to-signal ratio (NSR) is the main performance parameter of the PLATO instrument, which consists of 24 Normal Cameras and 2 Fast Cameras. In order to justify, verify and breakdown NSR-relevant requirements the software simulator PINE was developed. PINE models the signal pathway from a target star to the digital output of a camera based on physical models and considers the major noise contributors. In this paper, the simulator's coarse mode is introduced which allows fast performance analyses on instrument level. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

In its long-duration observation phase, the PLATO satellite will observe two non-overlapping fields for a total of 4 yr. The exact duration of each pointing will be determined 2 yr before launch. Previous estimates of PLATO's yield of Earth-sized planets in the habitable zones (HZs) around solar-type stars ranged between 6 and 280. We use the PLATO Solar-like Light curve Simulator (PSLS) to simulate light curves with transiting planets around bright (m_V > 11) Sun-like stars at a cadence of 25 s, roughly representative of the >15,000 targets in PLATO's high-priority P1 sample (mostly F5-K7 dwarfs and sub-dwarfs). Our study includes light curves generated from synchronous observations of 6, 12, 18, and 24 of PLATO's 12 cm aperture cameras over both 2 yr and 3 yr of continuous observations. Automated detrending is done with the Wotan software and post-detrending transit detection is performed with the Transit Least Squares (TLS) algorithm. We scale the true positive rates (TPRs) with the expected number of stars in the P1 sample and with modern estimates of the exoplanet occurrence rates and predict the detection of planets with 0.5 R_E <= R_p <= 1.5 R_E in the HZs around F5-K7 dwarf stars. For the (2 yr + 2 yr) long-duration observation phase strategy we predict 11-34 detections, for the (3 yr + 1 yr) strategy we predict 8-25 discoveries. Our study of the effects of stellar variability on shallow transits of Earth-like planets illustrates that our estimates of PLATO's planet yield, which we derive using a photometrically quiet star like the Sun, must be seen as upper limits. Measuring the stellar rotation of one of the components in eclipsing binaries (EBs) or planetary systems is a challenging task. The difficulty is mainly due to the complexity of analyzing, in the same light curve, the signal from the stellar rotation mixed with the transit signal of a stellar or sub-stellar companion, like a brown dwarf or planet. There are many methods to correct the long-term trend of the light curve. However, the correction often erases the signal of the stellar rotation from spots crossing the visible stellar disk and other weaker signals like planets. In this work, we present the DiffeRencial flUx Method of cuTting Off biNariES (DRUM TONES) to identify the signal of the binary transits and disentangle it from stellar rotation planet signals. We present our technique with applications to EBs from CoRoT, Kepler, Kepler K2 and TESS missions. We also applied our method to simulated synthetic EB from the PLATO mission. The period 2035-50 considered in the ESA Voyage long-term plan will coincide with a series of foreseeable advances in the characterization of the stellar content of the Milky Way. The Gaia mission, combined with large-scale spectroscopic surveys, is helping to build an unprecedented census in terms of the astrometric, kinematic and chemical properties of Galactic stellar populations. Within a decade, precise measurements of such properties will be available for hundreds of millions of stars. Meanwhile, time-domain surveys initiated with CoRoT and Kepler/K2 and carried on by space missions such as TESS and PLATO or ground-based projects like the LSST, will have brought asteroseismology to a high level of maturity. The combination of precise ages from asteroseismology with astrometric and spectroscopic data, on large stellar samples, is allowing Galactic archaeologists to gain new insight into the assembly history of the Milky Way. Recent breakthroughs --- based on the detection of solar-like oscillations in tens of thousands of red-giant stars --- demonstrate the potential of such approach. Therefore, we are convinced that an all-sky, high-cadence, long-duration stellar variability survey will become a scientific priority in the 2035-50 period. The Chronos concept presented here consists in a time-domain extension to Gaia. It will allow for mass and age estimates for half a million red giants within 1.7 kpc from the Sun and hence shed a new light on our understanding of the Galactic dynamics and archaeology. In terms of the targeted pulsators, Chronos will bridge the gap between PLATO and the LSST by surveying stars all the way from the subgiant branch to the early AGB. Finally, it will surpass all previous surveys capable of conducting asteroseismology in terms of the combined sky coverage and duration of the observations (2 x 3.75 months over the whole sky and >5 years in the CVZ)., Comment: White paper submitted in response to the Voyage 2050 long-term plan in the ESA Science Programme

Inspired by the so appealing example of red giants, where going from a handful of stars to thousands revealed the structure of the eigenspectrum, we inspected a large homogeneous set of around 1860 {\delta} Scuti stars observed with CoRoT. This unique data set reveals a common regular pattern which appears to be in agreement with island modes featured by theoretical non-perturbative treatments of fast rotation. The comparison of these data with models and linear stability calculations suggests that spectra can be fruitfully characterized to first order by a few parameters which might play the role of seismic indices for {\delta} Scuti stars, as {\Delta \nu} and {\nu_{max}} do for red giants. The existence of this pattern offers an observational support for guiding further theoretical works on fast rotation. It also provides a framework for further investigation of the observational material collected by CoRoT and Kepler. Context. Determining stellar characteristics such as the radius, the mass or the age is crucial when studying stellar evolution, exoplanetary systems or characterising stellar populations in the Galaxy. Asteroseismology is the golden path to accurately obtain these characteristics. In this context, a key question is how to make these methods less model-dependant. Aims. Building on the work of Reese et al. (2012), we wish to extend the SOLA inversion technique to new stellar global characteristics in addition to the mean density. The goal is to provide a general framework in which to estimate these characteristics as accurately as possible in low mass main sequence stars. Methods. First, we describe our framework and discuss the reliability of the inversion technique and the possible sources of error.We then apply this methodology to the acoustic radius, an age indicator based on the sound speed derivative and the mean density and compare it to estimates based on the average large and small frequency separations. These inversions are carried out for several test cases which include: various metallicities, different mixing-lengths, non-adiabatic effects and turbulent pressure. Results. We observe that the SOLA method yields accurate results in all test cases whereas results based on the large and small frequency separations are less accurate and more sensitive to surface effects and structural differences in the models. If we include the surface corrections of Kjeldsen et al. (2008), we obtain results of comparable accuracy for the mean density. Overall, the mean density and acoustic radius inversions are more robust than the inversions for the age indicator. Moreover, the current approach is limited to relatively young stars with radiative cores. Increasing the number of observed frequencies improves the reliability and accuracy of the method.

Rotation is thought to drive cyclic magnetic activity in the Sun and Sun-like stars. Stellar dynamos, however, are poorly understood owing to the scarcity of observations of rotation and magnetic fields in stars. Here, inferences are drawn on the internal rotation of a distant Sun-like star by studying its global modes of oscillation. We report asteroseismic constraints imposed on the rotation rate and the inclination of the spin axis of the Sun-like star HD 52265, a principal target observed by the CoRoT satellite that is known to host a planetary companion. These seismic inferences are remarkably consistent with an independent spectroscopic observation (rotational line broadening) and with the observed rotation period of star spots. Furthermore, asteroseismology constrains the mass of exoplanet HD 52265b. Under the standard assumption that the stellar spin axis and the axis of the planetary orbit coincide, the minimum spectroscopic mass of the planet can be converted into a true mass of 1.85 (+0.52,-0.42) M_Jupiter, which implies that it is a planet, not a brown dwarf., Comment: Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (5 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables). Asteroseismology of stars in clusters has been a long-sought goal because the assumption of a common age, distance and initial chemical composition allows strong tests of the theory of stellar evolution. We report results from the first 34 days of science data from the Kepler Mission for the open cluster NGC 6819 -- one of four clusters in the field of view. We obtain the first clear detections of solar-like oscillations in the cluster red giants and are able to measure the large frequency separation and the frequency of maximum oscillation power. We find that the asteroseismic parameters allow us to test cluster-membership of the stars, and even with the limited seismic data in hand, we can already identify four possible non-members despite their having a better than 80% membership probability from radial velocity measurements. We are also able to determine the oscillation amplitudes for stars that span about two orders of magnitude in luminosity and find good agreement with the prediction that oscillation amplitudes scale as the luminosity to the power of 0.7. A 10-night asteroseismic observation programme has been conducted in January 2004 with the spectrometer Harps at the ES0 3.6-m telescope. The selected target, the 6th magnitude F5V star HD 49933, was chosen among the prime candidates of Corot, the European space mission dedicated to characterize stellar oscillations mode with high precision photometry measurements. This star shows important line profiles variations, indicating a surprisingly high activity with respect to its low rotation rate. However, with the help of tools developed for disentangling the signatures of activity and oscillations, we are able to observe its oscillation spectrum in the frequency range [1.2, 2.2 mHz]. We measure the large separation (88.7+-0.4 microHz) and the maximum amplitude (around 0.4+-0.1 m/s rms), respectively in agreement and marginal agreement with the predicted values., Comment: accepted in A&A Letters

Solar-like oscillations are stochastically excited by turbulent convection. In this work we investigate changes in the acoustic oscillation power spectrum of solar-type stars by varying the treatment of convection in the equilibrium structure and the properties of the stochastic excitation model. We consider different stellar models computed with the standard mixing-length description by Bohm-Vitense (1958) and with a generalized formulation of the mixing-length approach by Gough (1976, 1977). We calculate the acoustic power generated by the turbulent convection which is injected stochastically into the acoustic pulsation modes. Large differences in the oscillation powers are obtained depending on the choice of the assumed convection formulation. Excitation of solar oscillations is attribued to turbulent motions in the solar convective zone. It is also currently believed that oscillations of low massive stars (M <2 Mo) - which possess an upper convective zone - are stochastically excited by turbulent convection in their outer layers. A recent theoretical work (Samadi & Goupil, 2001 ; Samadi et al, 2001) supplements and reinforces this theory. The acoustic power injected by turbulent convection into solar-like oscillations depends on the details of the turbulent spectrum. A theoretical formulation for the oscillation power is developed which generalizes previous ones. The formulation is first calibrated on a solar model in such a way as to reproduce the solar seismic data. This allows to investigate different assumptions about the stellar turbulent spectrum. We next explore consequences of the assumed turbulent description for some potentially solar-like oscillating stars. Large differences are found in the oscillation power of a given star when using different turbulent spectra as well as in a star to star comparison. Recent observations and theoretical studies support the theory that solar-type oscillations are intrinsically stable but excited stochastically by the turbulent convection in the outer layers of the star. The acoustic noise generated by the convective motion depends on the details of the turbulent energy spectrum. In this paper we present a general formulation for the acoustic noise generation rate based on previous works by other authors. In this general formulation any model for the spatial turbulent energy spectrum and for the turbulent time spectrum can be assumed. We compute acoustic power spectra and oscillation amplitudes of radial oscillations for models of the Sun and Procyon A. Stochatic excitation of stellar oscillations by turbulent convection is investigated and an expression for the power injected into the oscillations by the turbulent convection of the outer layers is derived which takes into account excitation through turbulent Reynolds stresses and turbulent entropy fluctuations. This formulation generalizes results from previous works and is built so as to enable investigations of various possible spatial and temporal spectra of stellar turbulent convection. For the Reynolds stress contribution and assuming the Kolmogorov spectrum we obtain a similar formulation than those derived by previous authors. The entropy contribution to excitation is found to originate from the advection of the Eulerian entropy fluctuations by the turbulent velocity field. Numerical computations in the solar case in a companion paper indicate that the entropy source term is dominant over Reynold stress contribution to mode excitation, except at high frequencies., Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Acoustic power and oscillation amplitudes of radial oscillations computed for a solar model are compared with solar seismic observations. The oscillations are assumed stochastically excited by turbulence. The numerical computations are based upon a theoretical formulation of the power going into solar like oscillation modes as proposed by Samadi et al. (2000) in a companion paper. This formulation allows to investigate several assumptions concerning properties of the stellar turbulence. We find that the entropy source plays a dominant role in the stochastic excitation compared with the Reynold stress source in agreement with Goldreich et al. (1994). We consider several turbulent kinetic energy spectra suggested by different observations of the solar granulation. Differences between turbulent spectra manifest themselves by large differences in the computed oscillation powers at high oscillation frequency. Two free parameters which are introduced in the description of the turbulence enter the expression for the acoustic power. These parameters are adjusted in order to fit to the solar observations of the surface velocity oscillations. The best fit is obtained with the kinetic energy spectrum deduced from the observations of the solar granulation by Nesis et al. (1993); the corresponding adjusted parameters are found to be compatible with the theoretical upper limit which can be set on these parameters.
