Increasing educational attainment is one of the most important and effective tools for health and economic improvements. The extent to which extreme climate events disrupt education, resulting in fewer years of schooling and reduced educational attainment, remains under-studied. Children in low- and middle-income countries may be uniquely vulnerable to loss of schooling after such disasters due to the poor physical condition of schools and the lack of resources to rebuild and mitigate unexpected household shocks. Our analysis assesses this overlooked social cost of tropical cyclones on schooling attainment. We study the education records of nearly 5.1 million people living in 13 low- and middle-income countries that were exposed to tropical cyclones between 1954-2010. We find that exposure to tropical cyclones during preschool age is associated with a 2.7 percentage point decrease in primary school enrollment on average (14.2% decrease), with larger effects from more intense storms (up to 28% decrease for the most intense storms). These effects are more pronounced among school-age girls compared to boys and are greater in areas less accustomed to experiencing tropical cyclones. We estimate that, across all LMICs, tropical cyclone exposure has resulted in more than 410,000 children not attending primary school in the last 20 years, leading to a reduction of more than 4.1 million total years of schooling. These impacts, identified among some of the world's poorest populations, may grow in importance as exposure to severe tropical cyclones is projected to increase with climate change.

This brief from the Region 19 Comprehensive Center describes universally effective teaching practices and demonstrates how a school faculty might choose and adapt strategies and actions to fit the specific needs and dreams of their students. The authors suggest how faculties in four distinct Pacific region communities might utilize a continuous improvement process called practice-focused collaboration to enhance student outcomes.

Context. To date, three nuclear transients have been associated with high-energy neutrino events. These transients are generally thought to be powered by tidal disruptions of stars (TDEs) by massive black holes. However, AT2019aalc, hosted in a Seyfert-1 galaxy, was not yet classified due to a lack of multiwavelength observations. Interestingly, the source has re-brightened 4 years after its discovery. Aims. We aim to classify the transient and explain the mechanism responsible for its second optical flare. Methods. We conducted a multi-wavelength monitoring program (from radio to X-rays) of AT2019aalc during its re-brightening in 2023. Results. The observations revealed a uniquely bright UV counterpart and multiple X-ray flares during the second optical flaring episode of the transient. The second flare, similarly to the first one, is also accompanied by IR dust echo emission. A long-term radio flare is found with an inverted spectrum. Optical spectroscopic observations reveal the presence of Bowen Fluorescence lines and strong high-ionization coronal lines indicating an extreme level of ionization in the system. Conclusions. The results suggest that the transient can be classified as a Bowen Fluorescence Flare (BFF), a relatively new sub-class of flaring active galactic nuclei (AGN). AT2019aalc can be also classified as an extreme coronal line emitter (ECLE). We found that, in addition to AT2019aalc, another BFF AT2021loi is spatially coincident with a high-energy neutrino event. We present measurements on Fe$_2$O$_3$ amorphization and melt under laser-driven shock compression up to 209(10) GPa via time-resolved in situ x-ray diffraction. At 122(3) GPa, a diffuse signal is observed indicating the presence of a non-crystalline phase. Structure factors have been extracted up to 182(6) GPa showing the presence of two well-defined peaks. A rapid change in the intensity ratio of the two peaks is identified between 145(10) and 151(10) GPa, indicative of a phase change. Present DFT+$U$ calculations of temperatures along Fe$_2$O$_3$ Hugoniot are in agreement with SESAME 7440 and indicate relatively low temperatures, below 2000 K, up to 150 GPa. The non-crystalline diffuse scattering is thus consistent with the - as yet unreported - shock amorphization of Fe$_2$O$_3$ between 122(3) and 145(10) GPa, followed by an amorphous-to-liquid transition above 151(10) GPa. Upon release, a non-crystalline phase is observed alongside crystalline $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. Many college students experience basic needs insecurity, which includes a lack of--or fear of the lack of--access to healthy food, stable housing, reliable transportation, affordable child care, physical and mental health care services, the internet and technology, and other necessities students need to survive and thrive in a postsecondary academic setting. This evaluation report focuses on measuring the extent to which students used basic needs services at select institutions supported by Basic Needs Initiative (BNI) grantees in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years and the impact of using services on students' short-term academic outcomes, including enrollment intensity (credits attempted), credits earned, grade point average, and fall to winter/spring retention. Education Northwest partnered with four BNI grantees on this report--Arkansas Community Colleges, Auburn University's Hunger Solutions Institute, John Burton Advocates for Youth, and United Way of King County--to access student-level data on the use of basic needs services, student demographics, and academic outcomes from 20 postsecondary institutions in Arkansas, Alabama, California, and Washington. This report has three key findings with implications for practice: (1) Collecting data on students' use of basic needs services and linking it to student demographic and outcome data was a new activity for many of the institutions included in this report, and the basic needs services data had several limitations; (2) Very few students in our sample used basic needs services, suggesting a large gap between students' reported needs and their access to services; and (3) Access to basic needs services had a positive impact on the number of credits students attempted and earned was positively related with retention.

We extract electron transport properties from atomistic simulations of a two-component plasma, by mapping the long-wavelength behaviour to a two-fluid model. The mapping procedure is performed via Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling over multiple spectra simultaneously. The free-electron dynamic structure factor and its properties have been investigated in the hydrodynamic formulation to justify its application to the long-wavelength behaviour of warm dense matter. We have applied this method to warm dense hydrogen modelled with wave packet molecular dynamics, and showed that the inferred electron transport properties are in agreement with a variety of reference calculations, except for the electron viscosity, where a substantive decrease is observed when compared to classical models., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We give a description of the Linnell division ring of a countable residually (poly-$\mathbb Z$ virtually nilpotent) (RPVN) group in terms of a generalised Novikov ring, and show that vanishing top-degree cohomology of a finite type group $G$ with coefficients in this Novikov ring implies the existence of a normal subgroup $N \leqslant G$ such that $\mathrm{cd}_{\mathbb Q}(N) < \mathrm{cd}_{\mathbb Q}(G)$ and $G/N$ is poly-$\mathbb Z$ virtually nilpotent. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is an RPVN group of finite type, then its top-degree $\ell^2$-Betti number vanishes if and only if there is a poly-$\mathbb Z$ virtually nilpotent quotient $G/N$ such that $\mathrm{cd}_{\mathbb Q}(N) < \mathrm{cd}_{\mathbb Q}(G)$. In particular, finitely generated RPVN groups of cohomological dimension $2$ are virtually free-by-nilpotent if and only if their second $\ell^2$-Betti number vanishes, and therefore $2$-dimensional RPVN groups with vanishing second $\ell^2$-Betti number are coherent. As another application, we show that if $G$ is a finitely generated parafree group with $\mathrm{cd}(G) = 2$, then $G$ satisfies the Parafree Conjecture if and only if the terms of its lower central series are eventually free. In this paper, we present intriguing findings that characterize both the closed (unbounded) and bounded EP operators on Hilbert spaces. Additionally, we demonstrate the result $\gamma(T) \leq r(T)$, where $T$ is a bounded EP operator, and $\gamma(T) \text{ and } r(T)$ represent the reduced minimum modulus and the spectral radius of $T$, respectively.

The composition of protoplanetary disks, and hence the initial conditions of planet formation, may be strongly influenced by the infall and thermal processing of material during the protostellar phase. Composition of dust and ice in protostellar envelopes, shaped by energetic processes driven by the protostar, serves as the fundamental building material for planets and complex organic molecules. As part of the JWST GO program, "Investigating Protostellar Accretion" (IPA), we observed an intermediate-mass protostar HOPS 370 (OMC2-FIR3) using NIRSpec/IFU and MIRI/MRS. This study presents the gas and ice phase chemical inventory revealed with the JWST in the spectral range of $\sim$2.9 to 28 $\mu$m and explores the spatial variation of volatile ice species in the protostellar envelope. We find evidence for thermal processing of ice species throughout the inner envelope. We present the first high-spatial resolution ($\sim 80$ au) maps of key volatile ice species H$_{2}$O, CO$_{2}$, $^{13}$CO$_2$, CO, and OCN$^-$, which reveal a highly structured and inhomogeneous density distribution of the protostellar envelope, with a deficiency of ice column density that coincides with the jet/outflow shocked knots. Further, we observe high relative crystallinity of H$_{2}$O ice around the shocked knot seen in the H$_2$ and OH wind/outflow, which can be explained by a lack of outer colder material in the envelope along the line of sight due to the irregular structure of the envelope. These observations show clear evidence of thermal processing of the ices in the inner envelope, close to the outflow cavity walls, heated by the luminous protostar., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. We present the first undetectable watermarking scheme for generative image models. Undetectability ensures that no efficient adversary can distinguish between watermarked and un-watermarked images, even after making many adaptive queries. In particular, an undetectable watermark does not degrade image quality under any efficiently computable metric. Our scheme works by selecting the initial latents of a diffusion model using a pseudorandom error-correcting code (Christ and Gunn, 2024), a strategy which guarantees undetectability and robustness. We experimentally demonstrate that our watermarks are quality-preserving and robust using Stable Diffusion 2.1. Our experiments verify that, in contrast to every prior scheme we tested, our watermark does not degrade image quality. Our experiments also demonstrate robustness: existing watermark removal attacks fail to remove our watermark from images without significantly degrading the quality of the images. Finally, we find that we can robustly encode 512 bits in our watermark, and up to 2500 bits when the images are not subjected to watermark removal attacks. JWST has revealed an abundance of compact, red objects at $z\approx5-8$ dubbed "little red dots" (LRDs), whose SEDs display a faint blue UV continuum followed by a steep rise in the optical. Despite extensive study of their characteristic V-shaped SEDs, the nature of LRDs remains unknown. We present a new analysis of the NIRSpec/PRISM spectrum of A2744-QSO1, a triply imaged LRD at $z=7.04$ from the UNCOVER survey. The spectrum shows a strong Balmer break and broad Balmer emission lines, both of which are difficult to explain with models invoking exclusively AGN or stellar contributions. Our fiducial model decomposes the spectrum into a post-starburst galaxy dominating the UV-optical continuum and a reddened AGN being sub-dominant at all wavelength and contributing at $\sim20\%$ level. However, our most credible model infers a stellar mass of $M_\star\approx 4\times10^9\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ within a radius of $r_\mathrm{e}<30\,$pc, driving its central density to the highest among observations to date. This high central density could be explained if A2744-QSO-1 is the early-forming core of a modern-day massive elliptical galaxy that later puffed up via the inside-out growth channel. The models also necessitate an unusually steep dust law to preserve the strong break strength, though this steepness may be explained by a deficit of large dust grains. It is also probable that these challenges reflect our ignorance of A2744-QSO1's true nature. Future variability and reverberation mapping studies could help disentangle the galaxy and AGN contribution to the continuum, and deeper redder observations could also unveil the dust properties in LRDs., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Underwater object detection (UOD), aiming to identify and localise the objects in underwater images or videos, presents significant challenges due to the optical distortion, water turbidity, and changing illumination in underwater scenes. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) based methods, especially deep learning methods, have shown promising performance in UOD. To further facilitate future advancements, we comprehensively study AI-based UOD. In this survey, we first categorise existing algorithms into traditional machine learning-based methods and deep learning-based methods, and summarise them by considering learning strategy, experimental dataset, utilised features or frameworks, and learning stage. Next, we discuss the potential challenges and suggest possible solutions and new directions. We also perform both quantitative and qualitative evaluations of mainstream algorithms across multiple benchmark datasets by considering the diverse and biased experimental setups. Finally, we introduce two off-the-shelf detection analysis tools, Diagnosis and TIDE, which well-examine the effects of object characteristics and various types of errors on detectors. These tools help identify the strengths and weaknesses of detectors, providing insigts for further improvement. We explore strategies aimed at reducing the amount of computation, both quantum and classical, required to run the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA). First, following Wurtz et al. [Phys.Rev A 104:052419], we consider the standard QAOA with instance-independent "tree" parameters chosen in advance. These tree parameters are chosen to optimize the MaxCut expectation for large girth graphs. We provide extensive numerical evidence supporting the performance guarantee for tree parameters conjectured in [Phys.Rev A 103:042612] and see that the approximation ratios obtained with tree parameters are typically well beyond the conjectured lower bounds, often comparable to performing a full optimization. This suggests that in practice, the QAOA can achieve near-optimal performance without the need for parameter optimization. Next, we modify the warm-start QAOA of Tate et al. [Quantum 7:1121]. The starting state for the QAOA is now an optimized product state associated with a solution of the Goemans-Williamson (GW) algorithm. Surprisingly, the tree parameters continue to perform well for the warm-start QAOA. We find that for random 3-regular graphs with hundreds of vertices, the expected cut obtained by the warm-start QAOA at depth $p \gtrsim 3$ is comparable to that of the standard GW algorithm. Our numerics on random instances do not provide general performance guarantees but do provide substantial evidence that there exists a regime of instance sizes in which the QAOA finds good solutions at low depth without the need for parameter optimization. The far-infrared (FIR) - radio correlation (FRC) is one of the most promising empirical constraints on the role of cosmic-rays (CRs) and magnetic fields (\textbf{B}) in galaxy formation and evolution. While many theories have been proposed in order to explain the emergence and maintenance of the FRC across a gamut of galaxy properties and redshift, the non-linear physics at play remain unexplored in full complexity and cosmological context. We present the first reproduction of the $z \sim 0$ FRC using detailed synthetic observations of state-of-the-art cosmological zoom-in simulations from the FIRE-3 suite with explicitly-evolved CR proton and electron (CRe) spectra, for three models for CR transport and multi-channel AGN feedback. In doing so, we generally verify the predictions of `calorimeter' theories at high FIR luminosities (\Lsixty\, $\gtrsim$ 10$^{9.5}$) and at low FIR luminosities (\Lsixty\, $\lesssim$ 10$^{9.5}$) the so-called `conspiracy' of increasing ultraviolet radiation escape in tandem with increasing CRe escape, and find that the global FRC is insensitive to \textit{orders-of-magnitude} locally-variable CR transport coefficients. Importantly, the indirect effect of AGN feedback on emergent observables highlights novel interpretations of outliers in the FRC. In particular, we find that in many cases, `radio-excess' objects can be better understood as \textit{IR-dim} objects with longer-lived radio contributions at low $z$ from Type Ia SNe and intermittent black hole accretion in quenching galaxies, though this is sensitive to the interplay of CR transport and AGN feedback physics. Purpose: Segmentation of the breast region in dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is essential for the automatic measurement of breast density and the quantitative analysis of imaging findings. This study aims to compare various deep learning methods to enhance whole breast segmentation and reduce computational costs as well as environmental effect for future research. Methods: We collected fifty-nine DCE-MRI scans from Stavanger University Hospital and, after preprocessing, analyzed fifty-eight scans. The preprocessing steps involved standardizing imaging protocols and resampling slices to ensure consistent volume across all patients. Using our novel approach, we defined new breast boundaries and generated corresponding segmentation masks. We evaluated seven deep learning models for segmentation namely UNet, UNet++, DenseNet, FCNResNet50, FCNResNet101, DeepLabv3ResNet50, and DeepLabv3ResNet101. To ensure robust model validation, we employed 10-fold cross-validation, dividing the dataset into ten subsets, training on nine, and validating on the remaining one, rotating this process to use all subsets for validation. Results: The models demonstrated significant potential across multiple metrics. UNet++ achieved the highest performance in Dice score, while UNet excelled in validation and generalizability. FCNResNet50, notable for its lower carbon footprint and reasonable inference time, emerged as a robust model following UNet++. In boundary detection, both UNet and UNet++ outperformed other models, with DeepLabv3ResNet also delivering competitive results.

We investigate the implementation of an oracle for the Subset Sum problem for quantum search using Grover's algorithm. Our work concerns reducing the number of qubits, gates, and multi-controlled gates required by the oracle. We describe the compilation of a Subset Sum instance into a quantum oracle, using a Python library we developed for Qiskit and have published in GitHub. We then present techniques to conserve qubits and gates along with experiments showing their effectiveness on random instances of Subset Sum. These techniques include moving from fixed to varying-width arithmetic, using partial sums of a set's integers to determine specific integer widths, and sorting the set to obtain provably the most efficient partial sums. We present a new method for computing bit-string comparisons that avoids arbitrarily large multiple-control gates, and we introduce a simple modification to the oracle that allows for approximate solutions to the Subset Sum problem via Grover search., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Objectives: To identify a head acceleration event (HAE) severity measure associated with HIA1 removals in elite level rugby union. Methods: HAEs were recorded from 215 men and 325 women with 30 and 28 HIA1 removals from men and women, respectively. Logistical regression were calculated to identify if peak power, maximum principal strain (MPS) and or Head Acceleration Response Metric (HARM) were associated with HIA1 events compared to non-cases. Optimal threshold values were determined using the Youden Index. Area under the curve (AUC) were compared using a paired sample approach. Significant differences were set at p<0.05. Results: All three severity measures were associated with HIA1 removals in both the mens and womens game. Power performed greatest for HIA1 removals in both the mens and womens games, based on overall AUC, sensitivity, and specificity values. HARM and MPS were found to perform lower than PLA in the womens game based on AUC comparisons (p=0.006 and 0.001, respectively), with MPS performing lower than PAA (p=0.001). Conclusion: The findings progress our understanding of HAE measures associated with HIA1 removals. Primordial black holes (PBHs) could compose the dark matter content of the Universe. We present the first simulations of cosmological structure formation with PBH dark matter that consistently include collisional few-body effects, post-Newtonian orbit corrections, orbital decay due to gravitational wave emission, and black-hole mergers. We carefully construct initial conditions by considering the evolution during radiation domination as well as early-forming binary systems. We identify numerous dynamical effects due to the collisional nature of PBH dark matter, including evolution of the internal structures of PBH halos and the formation of a hot component of PBHs. We also study the properties of the emergent population of PBH binary systems, distinguishing those that form at primordial times from those that form during the nonlinear structure formation process. These results will be crucial to sharpen constraints on the PBH scenario derived from observational constraints on the gravitational wave background. Coding assistants are increasingly leveraged in game design, both generating code and making high-level plans. To what degree can these tools align with developer workflows, and what new modes of human-computer interaction can emerge from their use? We present DreamGarden, an AI system capable of assisting with the development of diverse game environments in Unreal Engine. At the core of our method is an LLM-driven planner, capable of breaking down a single, high-level prompt -- a dream, memory, or imagined scenario provided by a human user -- into a hierarchical action plan, which is then distributed across specialized submodules facilitating concrete implementation. This system is presented to the user as a garden of plans and actions, both growing independently and responding to user intervention via seed prompts, pruning, and feedback. Through a user study, we explore design implications of this system, charting courses for future work in semi-autonomous assistants and open-ended simulation design., Comment: 21 pages + appendix, 11 figures

This research focuses on the development of a drone equipped with pruning tools and a stereo vision camera to accurately detect and measure the spatial positions of tree branches. YOLO is employed for branch segmentation, while two depth estimation approaches, monocular and stereo, are investigated. In comparison to SGBM, deep learning techniques produce more refined and accurate depth maps. In the absence of ground-truth data, a fine-tuning process using deep neural networks is applied to approximate optimal depth values. This methodology facilitates precise branch detection and distance measurement, addressing critical challenges in the automation of pruning operations. The results demonstrate notable advancements in both accuracy and efficiency, underscoring the potential of deep learning to drive innovation and enhance automation in the agricultural sector.

Optically addressable solid-state spins have been proposed as robust radiofrequency (RF)-optical transducers sensitive to a specific RF frequency tuned by an external static magnetic field, but often require precise field alignment with the system's symmetry axis. Here we introduce an isotropic solid-state spin system, namely weakly coupled spin pairs in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which acts as an RF-optical transducer independent of the direction of the tuning magnetic field, allowing greatly simplified experimental design. Using this platform, we first demonstrate a single-frequency RF receiver with frequency tunability from 0.1 to 19 GHz. We next demonstrate an instantaneous wideband RF spectrum analyser by applying a magnetic field gradient to encode RF frequency into spatial position. Finally, we utilise the spectrum analyser to detect free-space-transmitted RF signals matching the strength and frequency of typical Wi-Fi signals. This work exemplifies the unique capabilities of isotropic spins in hBN to operate as RF sensors, while circumventing the challenging requirement of precisely aligned magnetic fields facing conventional solid-state spins.

Optically addressable solid-state spins are an important platform for practical quantum technologies. Van der Waals material hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a promising host as it contains a wide variety of optical emitters, but thus far observations of addressable spins have been sparse, and most of them lacked a demonstration of coherent spin control. Here we demonstrate robust optical readout of spin pairs in hBN with emission wavelengths spanning from violet to the near-infrared. We find these broadband spin pairs exist naturally in a variety of hBN samples from bulk crystals to powders to epitaxial films, and can be coherently controlled across the entire wavelength range. Furthermore, we identify the optimal wavelengths for independent readout of spin pairs and boron vacancy spin defects co-existing in the same sample. Our results establish the ubiquity of the optically addressable spin pair system in hBN across a broad parameter space, making it a versatile playground for spin-based quantum technologies.

We present MM1.5, a new family of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) designed to enhance capabilities in text-rich image understanding, visual referring and grounding, and multi-image reasoning. Building upon the MM1 architecture, MM1.5 adopts a data-centric approach to model training, systematically exploring the impact of diverse data mixtures across the entire model training lifecycle. This includes high-quality OCR data and synthetic captions for continual pre-training, as well as an optimized visual instruction-tuning data mixture for supervised fine-tuning. Our models range from 1B to 30B parameters, encompassing both dense and mixture-of-experts (MoE) variants, and demonstrate that careful data curation and training strategies can yield strong performance even at small scales (1B and 3B). Additionally, we introduce two specialized variants: MM1.5-Video, designed for video understanding, and MM1.5-UI, tailored for mobile UI understanding. Through extensive empirical studies and ablations, we provide detailed insights into the training processes and decisions that inform our final designs, offering valuable guidance for future research in MLLM development.

We present helium atom micro-diffraction as an ideal technique for characterization of 2D materials due to its ultimate surface sensitivity combined with sub-micron spatial resolution. Thermal energy neutral helium scatters from the valence electron density, 2-3A above the ionic cores of a surface, making the technique ideal for studying 2D materials, where other approaches can struggle due to small interaction cross-sections with few-layer samples. Sub-micron spatial resolution is key development in neutral atom scattering to allow measurements from device-scale samples. We present measurements of monolayer-substrate interactions, thermal expansion coefficients, the electron-phonon coupling constant and vacancy-type defect density on monolayer-MoS2. As large language models (LLMs) are applied to more use cases, creating high quality, task-specific datasets for fine-tuning becomes a bottleneck for model improvement. Using high quality human data has been the most common approach to unlock model performance, but is prohibitively expensive in many scenarios. Several alternative methods have also emerged, such as generating synthetic or hybrid data, but the effectiveness of these approaches remain unclear, especially in resource-constrained scenarios and tasks that are not easily verified. To investigate this, we group various synthetic data generation strategies into three representative categories -- Answer Augmentation, Question Rephrase and New Question -- and study the performance of student LLMs trained under various constraints, namely seed instruction set size and query budget. We demonstrate that these strategies are not equally effective across settings. Notably, the optimal data generation strategy depends strongly on the ratio between the available teacher query budget and the size of the seed instruction set. When this ratio is low, generating new answers to existing questions proves most effective, but as this ratio increases, generating new questions becomes optimal. Across all tasks, we find that choice of augmentation method and other design choices matter substantially more in low to mid data regimes than in high data regimes. We provide a practical framework for selecting the appropriate augmentation method across settings, taking into account additional factors such as the scalability of each method, the importance of verifying synthetic data, and the use of different LLMs for synthetic data generation.

Saturn has long been the only giant planet in our solar system without any known Trojan members. In this paper, with serendipitous archival observations and refined orbit determination, we report that 2019 UO$_{14}$ is a Trojan of the gas giant. However, the object is only a transient Trojan currently librating around the leading Lagrange point $L_4$ of the Sun-Saturn system in a period of $\sim\!0.7$ kyr. Our N-body numerical simulation shows that 2019 UO$_{14}$ was likely captured as a Centaur and became trapped around $L_4$ $\sim\!2$ kyr ago from a horseshoe coorbital. The current Trojan state will be maintained for another millennium or thereabouts before transitioning back to a horseshoe state. Additionally, we characterize the physical properties of 2019 UO$_{14}$. Assuming a linear phase slope of $0.06 \pm 0.01$ mag/deg, the mean $r$-band absolute magnitude of the object was determined to be $H_r = 13.11 \pm 0.07$, with its color measured to be consistent with those of Jupiter and Neptune Trojans and not statistically different from Centaurs. Although the short-lived Saturn Trojan exhibited no compelling evidence of activity in the observations, we favour the possibility that it could be an active Trojan. If confirmed, 2019 UO$_{14}$ would be marked as the first active Trojan in our solar system. We conservatively determine the optical depth of dust within our photometric aperture to be $\lesssim\!10^{-7}$, corresponding to a dust mass-loss rate to be $\lesssim\!1$ kg s$^{-1}$, provided that the physical properties of dust grains resemble Centaur 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1.

Sulfur vacancy defects mediate a wide range of optoelectronic properties in MoS2, with precise control of defect density allowing for tuneable optoelectronic devices. However, accurate measurement of defect density in monolayer and few-layer samples poses a challenge due to their small scattering cross-sections to photon or electron probes. Conventional lab-based techniques such as Raman and photoluminescence can infer approximate defect density in micro-scale samples via optoelectronic properties, but they require validation using stoichiometric beam-line XPS. We introduce an ultra-low energy (~64 meV) and non-intrusive lab-based technique to quantify the surface defect density in micron-scale monolayer MoS2. Here we show that a recently developed technique, helium atom micro-diffraction (referred to as scanning helium microscopy (SHeM) in literature), can be used to directly measure vacancy-type defect density in 2D materials by performing atom diffraction from a microscopic spot. SHeM uses a neutral, inert, and thermal energy probe of helium-4 atoms to measure ordered and disordered atom-surface scattering allowing the level of surface order to be inferred. Manual pruning of radiata pine trees presents significant safety risks due to their substantial height and the challenging terrains in which they thrive. To address these risks, this research proposes the development of a drone-based pruning system equipped with specialized pruning tools and a stereo vision camera, enabling precise detection and trimming of branches. Deep learning algorithms, including YOLO and Mask R-CNN, are employed to ensure accurate branch detection, while the Semi-Global Matching algorithm is integrated to provide reliable distance estimation. The synergy between these techniques facilitates the precise identification of branch locations and enables efficient, targeted pruning. Experimental results demonstrate that the combined implementation of YOLO and SGBM enables the drone to accurately detect branches and measure their distances from the drone. This research not only improves the safety and efficiency of pruning operations but also makes a significant contribution to the advancement of drone technology in the automation of agricultural and forestry practices, laying a foundational framework for further innovations in environmental management.

Latent diffusion models (LDMs) have made significant advancements in the field of image generation in recent years. One major advantage of LDMs is their ability to operate in a compressed latent space, allowing for more efficient training and deployment. However, despite these advantages, challenges with LDMs still remain. For example, it has been observed that LDMs often generate high-frequency details and complex compositions imperfectly. We hypothesize that one reason for these flaws is due to the fact that all pre- and post-training of LDMs are done in latent space, which is typically $8 \times 8$ lower spatial-resolution than the output images. To address this issue, we propose adding pixel-space supervision in the post-training process to better preserve high-frequency details. Experimentally, we show that adding a pixel-space objective significantly improves both supervised quality fine-tuning and preference-based post-training by a large margin on a state-of-the-art DiT transformer and U-Net diffusion models in both visual quality and visual flaw metrics, while maintaining the same text alignment quality.

Today's most advanced multimodal models remain proprietary. The strongest open-weight models rely heavily on synthetic data from proprietary VLMs to achieve good performance, effectively distilling these closed models into open ones. As a result, the community is still missing foundational knowledge about how to build performant VLMs from scratch. We present Molmo, a new family of VLMs that are state-of-the-art in their class of openness. Our key innovation is a novel, highly detailed image caption dataset collected entirely from human annotators using speech-based descriptions. To enable a wide array of user interactions, we also introduce a diverse dataset mixture for fine-tuning that includes in-the-wild Q&A and innovative 2D pointing data. The success of our approach relies on careful choices for the model architecture details, a well-tuned training pipeline, and, most critically, the quality of our newly collected datasets, all of which will be released. The best-in-class 72B model within the Molmo family not only outperforms others in the class of open weight and data models but also compares favorably against proprietary systems like GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, and Gemini 1.5 on both academic benchmarks and human evaluation. Given $\boldsymbol{\alpha} \in [0,1]^d$, we estimate the smooth discrepancy of the Kronecker sequence $(n \boldsymbol{\alpha} \,\mathrm{mod}\, 1)_{n\geq 1}$. We find that it can be smaller than the classical discrepancy of $\textbf{any}$ sequence when $d \le 2$, and can even be bounded in the case $d=1$. To achieve this, we establish a novel deterministic analogue of Beck's local-to-global principle (Ann. of Math. 1994), which relates the discrepancy of a Kronecker sequence to multiplicative diophantine approximation. Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration events detected from beyond the Milky Way. FRB emission characteristics favor highly magnetized neutron stars, or magnetars, as the sources, as evidenced by FRB-like bursts from a galactic magnetar, and the star-forming nature of FRB host galaxies. However, the processes that produce FRB sources remain unknown. Although galactic magnetars are often linked to core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), it's uncertain what determines which supernovae result in magnetars. The galactic environments of FRB sources can be harnessed to probe their progenitors. Here, we present the stellar population properties of 30 FRB host galaxies discovered by the Deep Synoptic Array. Our analysis shows a significant deficit of low-mass FRB hosts compared to the occurrence of star-formation in the universe, implying that FRBs are a biased tracer of star-formation, preferentially selecting massive star-forming galaxies. This bias may be driven by galaxy metallicity, which is positively correlated with stellar mass. Metal-rich environments may favor the formation of magnetar progenitors through stellar mergers, as higher metallicity stars are less compact and more likely to fill their Roche lobes, leading to unstable mass transfer. Although massive stars do not have convective interiors to generate strong magnetic fields by dynamo, merger remnants are thought to have the requisite internal magnetic-field strengths to result in magnetars. The preferential occurrence of FRBs in massive star-forming galaxies suggests that CCSN of merger remnants preferentially forms magnetars., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature. High-resolution spectroscopic characterization of young super-Jovian planets enables precise constraints on elemental and isotopic abundances of their atmospheres. As part of the ESO SupJup Survey, we present high-resolution spectral observations of two wide-orbit super-Jupiters in YSES 1 (or TYC 8998-760-1) using the upgraded VLT/CRIRES+ (R~100,000) in K-band. We carry out free atmospheric retrieval analyses to constrain chemical and isotopic abundances, temperature structures, rotation velocities, and radial velocities. We confirm the previous detection of 13CO in YSES 1 b at a higher significance of 12.6{\sigma}, but point to a higher 12CO/13CO ratio of 88+/-13 (1{\sigma} confidence interval), consistent with the primary's isotope ratio 66+/-5. We retrieve a solar-like composition in YSES 1 b with a C/O=0.57+/-0.01, indicating a formation via gravitational instability or core accretion beyond the CO iceline. Additionally, the observations lead to detections of H2O and CO in the outer planet YSES 1 c at 7.3{\sigma} and 5.7{\sigma}, respectively. We constrain the atmospheric C/O ratio of YSES 1 c to be either solar or subsolar (C/O=0.36+/-0.15), indicating the accretion of oxygen-rich solids. The two companions have distinct vsini, 5.34+/-0.14 km/s for YSES 1 b and 11.3+/-2.1 km/s for YSES 1 c, despite their similar natal environments. This may indicate different spin axis inclinations or effective magnetic braking by the long-lived circumplanetary disk around YSES 1 b. The BICEP3 and BICEP Array polarimeters are small-aperture refracting telescopes located at the South Pole designed to measure primordial gravitational wave signatures in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization, predicted by inflation. Constraining the inflationary signal requires not only excellent sensitivity, but also careful control of instrumental systematics. Both instruments use antenna-coupled orthogonally polarized detector pairs, and the polarized sky signal is reconstructed by taking the difference in each detector pair. As a result, the differential response between detectors within a pair becomes an important systematic effect we must control. Additionally, mapping the intensity and polarization response in regions away from the main beam can inform how sidelobe levels affect CMB measurements. Extensive calibration measurements are taken in situ every austral summer for control of instrumental systematics and instrument characterisation. In this work, we detail the set of beam calibration measurements that we conduct on the BICEP receivers, from deep measurements of main beam response to polarized beam response and sidelobe mapping. This paper classifies all Higgs branch Higgsing patterns for simply-laced unitary quiver gauge theories with eight supercharges (including multiple loops) and introduces a Higgs branch subtraction algorithm. All possible minimal transitions are given, identifying differences between slices that emerge on the Higgs and Coulomb branches. In particular, the algorithm is sensitive to global information including monodromies and Namikawa-Weyl groups. Guided by symplectic duality, the algorithm further determines the global symmetry on the Coulomb branch, and verifies the exclusion of $C$ type or $F_4$ global symmetry for (simply-laced) unitary quiver gauge theories. The Higgs branches of some unitary quivers are verified to give slices in the nilpotent cones of exceptional simple Lie algebras.

Traditional machine learning-based visual inspection systems require extensive data collection and repetitive model training to improve accuracy. These systems typically require expensive camera, computing equipment and significant machine learning expertise, which can substantially burden small and medium-sized enterprises. This study explores leveraging unsupervised learning methods with pre-trained models and low-cost hardware to create a cost-effective visual anomaly detection system. The research aims to develop a low-cost visual anomaly detection solution that uses minimal data for model training while maintaining generalizability and scalability. The system utilises unsupervised learning models from Anomalib and is deployed on affordable Raspberry Pi hardware through openVINO. The results show that this cost-effective system can complete anomaly defection training and inference on a Raspberry Pi in just 90 seconds using only 10 normal product images, achieving an F1 macro score exceeding 0.95. While the system is slightly sensitive to environmental changes like lighting, product positioning, or background, it remains a swift and economical method for factory automation inspection for small and medium-sized manufacturers

Human speech conveys prosody, linguistic content, and speaker identity. This article investigates a novel speaker anonymization approach using an end-to-end network based on a Vector-Quantized Variational Auto-Encoder (VQ-VAE) to deal with these speech components. This approach is designed to disentangle these components to specifically target and modify the speaker identity while preserving the linguistic and emotionalcontent. To do so, three separate branches compute embeddings for content, prosody, and speaker identity respectively. During synthesis, taking these embeddings, the decoder of the proposed architecture is conditioned on both speaker and prosody information, allowing for capturing more nuanced emotional states and precise adjustments to speaker identification. Findings indicate that this method outperforms most baseline techniques in preserving emotional information. However, it exhibits more limited performance on other voice privacy tasks, emphasizing the need for further improvements.

The technique of orthosymplectic quotient quiver subtraction is introduced. This involves subtraction of an orthosymplectic quotient quiver from a $3d\;\mathcal N=4$ orthosymplectic quiver gauge theory which has the effect of gauging subgroups of the IR Coulomb branch global symmetry. Orthosymplectic quotient quivers for $\mathrm{SU}(2),\;\mathrm{SU}(3),\;G_2,$ and $\mathrm{SO}(7)$ are found and derived from Type IIA brane systems involving negatively charged branes for certain $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)$ gauge theories. Orthosymplectic quotient quiver subtraction is applied to magnetic quivers for nilpotent orbit closures providing new orthosymplectic counterparts to known unitary quivers. New Coulomb branch constructions are found such as for two height four nilpotent orbit closures of $F_4$ and one of height three. A novel application is to find magnetic quivers and Type IIA brane systems for the $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)$ worldvolume theory of two $\frac{1}{2}$M5 branes probing $E_6$ Klein singularity and for $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)\;(E_6,E_6)$ conformal matter. These give a perturbative Lagrangian realisation to the dynamics of strongly interacting M5 branes. The magnetic quiver for $6d\;\mathcal N=(1,0)\;(E_6,E_6)$ conformal matter is star-shaped and can also be interpreted as a magnetic quiver for a class $\mathcal S$ theory specified by $\mathrm{SO}(26)$ algebra on a three-punctured sphere., Comment: Typos corrected in brane systems shown in Fig 20 and Fig 22

Many time series, particularly health data streams, can be best understood as a sequence of phenomenon or events, which we call motifs. A time series motif is a short trace segment which may implicitly capture an underlying phenomenon within the time series. Specifically, we focus on glucose traces collected from continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), which inherently contain motifs representing underlying human behaviors such as eating and exercise. The ability to identify and quantify causal relationships amongst motifs can provide a mechanism to better understand and represent these patterns, useful for improving deep learning and generative models and for advanced technology development (e.g., personalized coaching and artificial insulin delivery systems). However, no previous work has developed causal discovery methods for time series motifs. Therefore, in this paper we develop MotifDisco (motif disco-very of causality), a novel causal discovery framework to learn causal relations amongst motifs from time series traces. We formalize a notion of Motif Causality (MC), inspired from Granger Causality and Transfer Entropy, and develop a Graph Neural Network-based framework that learns causality between motifs by solving an unsupervised link prediction problem. We also integrate MC with three model use cases of forecasting, anomaly detection and clustering, to showcase the use of MC as a building block for other downstream tasks. Finally, we evaluate our framework and find that Motif Causality provides a significant performance improvement in all use cases.

While the physics of disordered packing in non-growing systems is well understood, unexplored phenomena can emerge when packing takes place in growing domains. We study the arrangements of pigment cells (chromatophores) on squid skin as a biological example of a packed system on an expanding surface. We find that relative density fluctuations in cell numbers grow with spatial scale. We term this behavior ''hyperdisordered'', in contrast with hyperuniform behavior in which relative fluctuations tend to zero at large scale. We find that hyperdisordered scaling, akin to that of a critical system, is quantitatively reproduced by a model in which hard disks are randomly inserted in a homogeneously growing surface. In addition, we find that chromatophores increase in size during animal development, but maintain a stationary size distribution. The physical mechanisms described in our work may apply to a broad class of growing dense systems.

We present a novel and flexible learning-based method for generating tileable image sets. Our method goes beyond simple self-tiling, supporting sets of mutually tileable images that exhibit a high degree of diversity. To promote diversity we decouple structure from content by foregoing explicit copying of patches from an exemplar image. Instead we leverage the prior knowledge of natural images and textures embedded in large-scale pretrained diffusion models to guide tile generation constrained by exterior boundary conditions and a text prompt to specify the content. By carefully designing and selecting the exterior boundary conditions, we can reformulate the tile generation process as an inpainting problem, allowing us to directly employ existing diffusion-based inpainting models without the need to retrain a model on a custom training set. We demonstrate the flexibility and efficacy of our content-aware tile generation method on different tiling schemes, such as Wang tiles, from only a text prompt. Furthermore, we introduce a novel Dual Wang tiling scheme that provides greater texture continuity and diversity than existing Wang tile variants.

Autonomous operations of robots in unknown environments are challenging due to the lack of knowledge of the dynamics of the interactions, such as the objects' movability. This work introduces a novel Causal Reinforcement Learning approach to enhancing robotics operations and applies it to an urban search and rescue (SAR) scenario. Our proposed machine learning architecture enables robots to learn the causal relationships between the visual characteristics of the objects, such as texture and shape, and the objects' dynamics upon interaction, such as their movability, significantly improving their decision-making processes. We conducted causal discovery and RL experiments demonstrating the Causal RL's superior performance, showing a notable reduction in learning times by over 24.5% in complex situations, compared to non-causal models., Comment: 6 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. We present recent laboratory results demonstrating high-contrast coronagraphy for the future space-based large IR/Optical/Ultraviolet telescope recommended by the Decadal Survey. The High-contrast Imager for Complex Aperture Telescopes (HiCAT) testbed aims to implement a system-level hardware demonstration for segmented aperture coronagraphs with wavefront control. The telescope hardware simulator employs a segmented deformable mirror with 37 hexagonal segments that can be controlled in piston, tip, and tilt. In addition, two continuous deformable mirrors are used for high-order wavefront sensing and control. The low-order sensing subsystem includes a dedicated tip-tilt stage, a coronagraphic target acquisition camera, and a Zernike wavefront sensor that is used to measure and correct low-order aberration drifts. We explore the performance of a segmented aperture coronagraph both in static operations (limited by natural drifts and instabilities) and in dynamic operations (in the presence of artificial wavefront drifts added to the deformable mirrors), and discuss the estimation and control strategies used to reach and maintain the dark-zone contrast using our low-order wavefront sensing and control. Hypersparse traffic matrices constructed from network packet source and destination addresses is a powerful tool for gaining insights into network traffic. SuiteSparse: GraphBLAS, an open source package or building, manipulating, and analyzing large hypersparse matrices, is one approach to constructing these traffic matrices. Suricata is a widely used open source network intrusion detection software package. This work demonstrates how Suricata network flow records can be used to efficiently construct hypersparse matrices using GraphBLAS.

JWST has revealed diverse new populations of high-redshift ($z\sim4-11$) AGN and extreme star-forming galaxies that challenge current models. In this paper, we use rest-frame UV emission-line diagnostics to identify AGN candidates and other exceptional ionizing sources, complementing previous studies predominantly focused on broad-line AGN. From a parent sample of 205 $\mathrm{z_{spec}}>3$ UNCOVER galaxies with NIRSpec/PRISM follow-up, we identify 12 C IV, He II, and C III] emitters. Leveraging the combined rest-optical and UV coverage of PRISM, we limit the emission-line model space using the sample's [O III]/H$\beta$ distribution, significantly decreasing the overlap between AGN and star-formation models in the UV diagnostics. We then find that the five He II emitters are the strongest AGN candidates, with further support from two [Ne V] detections and one X-ray detection from Chandra. We cannot robustly quantify the AGN fraction in this sample, but we note that close to 20% of $\mathrm{M_{*}>2\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}}$ parent sample galaxies are AGN candidates. The lower-mass line emitters, which are consistent with both AGN and star-forming photoionization models, have more compact sizes and higher specific star formation rates than the parent sample. Higher-resolution and deeper data on these UV line emitters should provide much stronger constraints on the obscured AGN fraction at $z > 3$., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Over the past decade, there has been a steady advancement in enhancing face recognition algorithms leveraging advanced machine learning methods. The role of the loss function is pivotal in addressing face verification problems and playing a game-changing role. These loss functions have mainly explored variations among intra-class or inter-class separation. This research examines the natural phenomenon of facial symmetry in the face verification problem. The symmetry between the left and right hemi faces has been widely used in many research areas in recent decades. This paper adopts this simple approach judiciously by splitting the face image vertically into two halves. With the assumption that the natural phenomena of facial symmetry can enhance face verification methodology, we hypothesize that the two output embedding vectors of split faces must project close to each other in the output embedding space. Inspired by this concept, we penalize the network based on the disparity of embedding of the symmetrical pair of split faces. Symmetrical loss has the potential to minimize minor asymmetric features due to facial expression and lightning conditions, hence significantly increasing the inter-class variance among the classes and leading to more reliable face embedding. Light-Field (LF) image is emerging 4D data of light rays that is capable of realistically presenting spatial and angular information of 3D scene. However, the large data volume of LF images becomes the most challenging issue in real-time processing, transmission, and storage. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep LF Image Compression method Using Disentangled Representation and Asymmetrical Strip Convolution (LFIC-DRASC) to improve coding efficiency. Firstly, we formulate the LF image compression problem as learning a disentangled LF representation network and an image encoding-decoding network. Secondly, we propose two novel feature extractors that leverage the structural prior of LF data by integrating features across different dimensions. Meanwhile, disentangled LF representation network is proposed to enhance the LF feature disentangling and decoupling. Thirdly, we propose the LFIC-DRASC for LF image compression, where two Asymmetrical Strip Convolution (ASC) operators, i.e. horizontal and vertical, are proposed to capture long-range correlation in LF feature space. These two ASC operators can be combined with the square convolution to further decouple LF features, which enhances the model ability in representing intricate spatial relationships. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LFIC-DRASC achieves an average of 20.5\% bit rate reductions comparing with the state-of-the-art methods.

We explore the physical properties of five massive quiescent galaxies at $z\sim2.5$, revealing the presence of non-negligible dust reservoirs. JWST NIRSpec observations were obtained for each target, finding no significant line emission; multiple star formation tracers independently place upper limits between $0.1-10~M_\odot / \mathrm{yr}$. Spectral energy distribution modeling with Prospector infers stellar masses between $\log_{10}[M / M_\odot] \sim 10-11$ and stellar mass-weighted ages between $1-2$ Gyr. The inferred mass-weighted effective radii ($r_{eff}\sim 0.4-1.4$ kpc) and inner $1$ kpc stellar surface densities ($\log_{10}[\Sigma / M_\odot \mathrm{kpc}^2 ]\gtrsim 9$) are typical of quiescent galaxies at $z \gtrsim 2$. The galaxies display negative color gradients (redder core and bluer outskirts); for one galaxy, this effect results from a dusty core, while for the others it may be evidence of an "inside-out" growth process. Unlike local quiescent galaxies, we identify significant reddening in these typical cosmic noon passive galaxies; all but one require $A_V \gtrsim 0.4$. This finding is in qualitative agreement with previous studies but our deep 20-band NIRCam imaging is able to significantly suppress the dust-age degeneracy and confidently determine that these galaxies are reddened. We develop a general framework for studying non-uniqueness of the Riemann problem for the isentropic compressible Euler system in two spatial dimensions, and in this paper we present the most delicate result of our method: non-uniqueness of the contact discontinuity. Our approach is computational, and uses the pressure law as an additional degree of freedom. The stability of the contact discontinuities for this system is a major open problem (see Gui-Qiang Chen and Ya-Guang Wang [Nonlinear partial differential equations, volume 7 of Abel Symposia. Springer, Heidelberg, 2012.]). We find a smooth pressure law $p$, verifying the physically relevant condition $p'>0$, such that for the isentropic compressible Euler system with this pressure law, contact discontinuity initial data is wildly non-unique in the class of bounded, admissible weak solutions. This result resolves the question of uniqueness for contact discontinuity solutions in the compressible regime. Moreover, in the same regularity class in which we have non-uniqueness of the contact discontinuity, i.e. $L^\infty$, with no $BV$ regularity or self-similarity, we show that the classical contact discontinuity solution to the two-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler system is in fact unique in the class of bounded, admissible weak solutions if we restrict to 1-D solutions., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures.
