Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is often said to facilitate lifelong learning and occurs when already-acquired learning outcomes are officially valued. The education system is a central arena of RPL, allowing facilitated access to or shortening of study programmes. This study explores RPL practices in Switzerland. We ask the following research question: How do professional education institutions regulate, practice, and justify RPL? We start from the premise that RPL practices in higher education institutions are shaped by national RPL policies, professional bodies, and the nature of the respective labour markets. However, within these framework conditions, higher education institutions also create their own organisational policies, thereby promoting or hindering RPL. In addition, the study programme's knowledge domain and the responsible persons' pedagogic agency, shaped by their pedagogic concepts and individual attitudes, are also guiding factors. To answer our research question, we conducted qualitative comparative case studies and compared the RPL practices of professional education institutions that offer study programmes for hospitality management and social education. Our results show that organisations offering the same professional study programmes regulate, practice, and justify RPL differently, indicating the importance of organisational gatekeepers' pedagogic agency.

Affective occupational commitment (AOC) during training is considered to prevent occupational turnover and positively influence later work-related outcomes and learning processes. However, little is known about AOC development in a training context. This study examines antecedents and consequences of AOC and its development during vocational education and training. Participants were 497 Swiss apprentices who took part in a longitudinal survey throughout their 3-year training program. The results of latent growth curve modeling showed a slight average decrease in AOC over time. Initial AOC was negatively related to occupational turnover intention and positively related to satisfaction with the apprenticeship. Perceived person-occupation fit and feelings of competence during in-company training were positively correlated with initial AOC. Change in AOC was the smallest when apprentices felt autonomous and larger when they felt competent. The results indicate how in-company training environments can be arranged that foster apprentices' AOC.

We present an approach to use the think aloud method for formative usability evaluation for medical software in a remote access scenario which combines researchers in two different locations and test persons distributed across five Swiss hospitals into one study using MS-Teams. We could show that a) these tests can be performed remote in a tight time schedule and b) that results valuable for the formative development of the examined mockup solution could be achieved. Two sessions had to be rescheduled for technical problems but all test persons could complete the think aloud study in 30 minutes at their usual working environment. Workforce shortages in the health and social care sectors are a relevant issue worldwide. One measure to mitigate workforce shortages is to improve working conditions and workers' future prospects in order to encourage worker retention. Although studies have examined factors related to organizational turnover, less is known about the factors that lead to occupational turnover intentions. Drawing upon social cognitive career theory, this study examines the reasons behind health and social care workers' occupational turnover intentions considering emotional exhaustion as an explanatory variable. The participants were 403 health and social care workers who responded to a questionnaire about 4 years after completing their vocational education and training at the upper-secondary level. Structural equation analyses revealed that affective occupational commitment showed the highest negative correlation with occupational turnover intentions. Furthermore, the results suggest that career-related outcome expectations, wellbeing, and supportive working conditions are crucial for designing effective interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present first findings of the Digi-Care project, a multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder research project investigating the impacts of digitization on nursing work practices and in particular the transmission of patient care information within and beyond nursing work practices. We completed the initial data collection of the funded 3-year research project and report on a plethora of significant and critical IT-related events. Some of them can be attributed to usability issues.
