The identification of priority conservation areas (PCA) plays an important role in biodiversity conservation, but uncertainties create challenges for conservation planning. The objective was to test a method based on 'taxonomic distinctness' (TD) and to identify PCA to quantify the heritage value of a territory and establish the most appropriate conservation measures. The researchers performed a systematic and phytogeographical analysis of ten islands in northeastern Algeria, a biological hotspot with heterogeneous ecosystem types and subject to socio-economic pressures. The biological diversity represented by 223 species in these environments reflects a high rate of endemicity (13%).

The pteridofloras of nine locations in the Gibraltar Arc were analyzed using a taxonomic distinctness index. We found that the index could be a proxy of historical biogeography of the pteridofloras from this area. Moreover, the value of the taxonomic distinctness index of the different locations showed relevant relationships with certain geographic variables. Finally, we hypothesize about the value of the information derived from taxonomic distinctness index for conservation of the pteridoflora in the Gibraltar Arc., La pteridoflora de nueve localidades singulares situadas en el Arco de Gibraltar ha sido analizada utilizando un índice de distinción taxonómica. Encontramos que el índice podría ser una aproximación a la historia biogeográfica de las pteridofloras de esta zona. Además, el valor del índice de distinción taxonómica de las diferentes localidades mostró relaciones relevantes con determinadas variables geográficas. Finalmente, discutimos el posible papel de la información derivada del índice de distinción taxonómica en la conservación de la pteridoflora del Arco de Gibraltar.

The coastal environments of Andalusia have been subjected to strong pressures of anthropic origin: tourism, urbanizations, recreational activities, invasions of alien species , etc., which have fragmented and altered, in the last 60 years, their structure, composition and functionality from a phytocenological point of view, which implies a threat to the conservation status of Natural habitats of Community interest, endangered species and, in sum, of plant biodiversity. From the study of 14 coastal protected areas (PAs), different conservation and anthropic interaction analyzes have been performed and, finally, the consistency of the nodes and the integral degree of effectiveness of the network have been estimated. It is observed that the intense artificialization of the Andalusian coast has produced a fragmentation of habitats and a loss of connectivity between focal habitats in coastal PAs, being especially important between the Mediterranean and Atlantic PAs blocks, separated by the central segment of the Costa del Costa Sun, an important international tourist destination with intense anthropic activity, Los ecosistemas litorales están fuertemente amenazados por el aumento del nivel del mar, las inundaciones y la litoralización de la población. Aunque se ha intensificado el esfuerzo por declarar áreas protegidas costeras, estas quedan fragmentadas en teselas circundadas por territorios artificalizados. La conectividad entre estas áreas protegidas es por tanto la garantía de la continuidad de los servicios ecosistémicos que proveen. Se propone un modelo para la evaluación de la eficacia potencial del sistema continuo de las áreas protegidas costeras en base al conocimiento de su flora y vegetación. El grado de efectividad pretende ser un indicador para la adopción de medidas de planificación territorial conducentes al fortalecimiento de la red como medida de salvaguarda de la biodiversidad. Para probar el modelo propuesto se ha elegido la costa de Andalucía (S de España), territorio bañado por el Mediterráneo y el Atlántico, susceptible de importantes impactos. Este segmento de costa ha sido sometido durante los últimos 60 años a fuertes presiones de origen antrópico.que han fragmentado y alterado la estructura, composición y funcionalidad de los ecosistemas litorales. Todo ello pone en riesgo tanto los valores que sirvieron para la declaración de un status de protección como la conectividad entre ecosistemas que garanticen la persistencia de sus servicios ecosistémicos. La metodología propuesta para medir la eficacia potencial del sistema se sustenta en el grado de protección legal, el valor fitocenótico y el grado de artificialización. A partir de la integración de los valores obtenidos se ha calculado la consistencia de los nodos y en definitiva la efectividad en red. La aplicación de este método pone de relevancia cuales son las áreas protegidas  más vulnerables ante las deficiencias de la red, en especial por las dificultades de conectividad.

Although the increasing effort to protect coastal areas, these are fragmented into tesserae surrounded by artificialized territories. Connectivity between these protected areas is the guarantee of the continuity of the ecosystem services they provide. We proposed a model for the evaluation of the potential effectiveness of the continuous system of coastal protected areas based on knowledge of their flora and vegetation. The degree of effectiveness is intended as an indicator for the adoption of spatial planning measures leading to the strengthening of the network as a measure to safeguard biodiversity. To test the proposed model, the coast of Andalusia (S of Spain) was chosen, a territory bathed by the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, which is susceptible to significant impacts. This coast has been subjected, during the last 60 years, to strong anthropic pressure that have fragmented and altered the structure, composition and functionality of the coastal ecosystems. These impacts threaten the standards in which the protected areas were declared, also jeopardize the connectivity between ecosystems. Consequently, this pressure has negative effects in the ecosystem services development. The methodology we proposed to measure the potential effectiveness of the system is based on the degree of legal protection, the phytogenic value and the degree of artificialisation. Based on the integration of the values obtained, the consistency of the nodes had been calculated and, in short, the effectiveness of the network. The application of this approach highlights which protected areas are most vulnerable to network deficiencies, especially due to connectivity difficulties.

Protected areas (PAs) aim at safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem services in the long term. Despite the remarkable growth in area covered by PAs in recent years, biodiversity trends continue to worsen as a result of serious global pressures such as habitat destruction and degradation. One main cause of habitat destruction and degradation is land development that implies the replacement of natural land uses–land covers (LULCs) with artificial ones. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of four PA networks at preventing land development in Spain, a biodiversity-rich country that has experienced recent rapid environmental transformations, using two models of increased validity: an original model and a biophysically enhanced model. We applied a before–after control–impact (BACI) design whereby absolute artificial area increase (AAI) and relative artificial area increase (RAI) were compared across PA categories (nature reserves [NRs], nature parks [NPs], Sites of Community Importance [SCIs], and Special Protection Areas [SPAs]), study zones (coastal and inland), and climates (Atlantic and Mediterranean) using CORINE Land Cover (CLC) data and two control zones: 1- and 5-km buffers around protected polygons. NRs prevented land development, whereas other categories reduced it moderately to very substantially in the assessed period. AAI was especially intense in inland SPAs and NPs. NRs and NPs were the most effective PA categories inland, whereas NRs and SPAs were the most effective ones on the coast. Land development was greater on the Spanish coast than inland inside and outside PAs, especially around Macaronesian and Mediterranean PAs. Atlantic PAs experienced similar or greater land development values than surrounding areas. Our results are intended to guide future conservation efforts in Spain, chiefly on its heavily pressured coastal environment.
