Abstract

The Social Network Analysis perspective has proven the ability to develop a significant breadth of theoretical and methodological issues witnessed by the contribution of an increasing number of scholars and the multiplication of empirical applications in a wide range of scientific fields. One of the disciplinary areas in which this development has occurred, among others, is certainly that of computational social science, by virtue of the developing field of online social networks and the leading role of information technologies in the production of scientific knowledge. The complex nature of social phenomena enforced the usefulness of the network perspective as a wealth of theoretical and methodological tools capable of penetrating within the dimensions of that complexity. The book hosts eleven contributions that within a sound theoretical ground, present different examples of speculative and applicative areas where the Social Network Analysis can contribute to explore, interpret and predict social interaction between actors. Some of the contributions were presented at the ARS’19 Conference held in Vietri sul Mare (Salerno, Italy) in October, 29-31 2019; it was the seventh of a biennial meetings series started in 2007 with the aim to promote relevant results and the most recent methodological developments in Social Network Analysis.

Abstract

We present a new model, developed with the Serpent Monte Carlo code, for neutronics simulation of the TRIGA Mark II reactor of Pavia (Italy). The complete 3D geometry of the reactor core is implemented with high accuracy and detail, exploiting all the available information about geometry and materials. The Serpent model of the reactor is validated in the fresh fuel configuration, through a benchmark analysis of the first criticality experiments and control rods calibrations. The accuracy of simulations in reproducing the reactivity difference between the low power (10 W) and full power (250 kW) reactor condition is also tested. Finally, a direct comparison between Serpent and MCNP simulations of the same reactor configurations is presented.

Abstract

A time evolution model was developed to study fuel burnup for the TRIGA Mark II reactor at the University of Pavia. The results were used to predict the effects of a complete core reconfiguration and the accuracy of this prediction was tested experimentally. We used the Monte Carlo code MCNP5 to reproduce system neutronics in different operating conditions and to analyse neutron fluxes in the reactor core. The software that took care of time evolution, completely designed in-house, used the neutron fluxes obtained by MCNP5 to evaluate fuel consumption. This software was developed specifically to keep into account some features that differentiate experimental reactors from power ones, such as the daily ON/OFF cycle and the long fuel lifetime. These effects can not be neglected to properly account for neutron poison accumulation. We evaluated the effect of 48 years of reactor operation and predicted a possible new configuration for the reactor core: the objective was to remove some of the fuel elements from the core and to obtain a substantial increase in the Core Excess reactivity value. Abstract

In this work, the characterization of the full-power steady state of the TRIGA Mark II nuclear reactor of the University of Pavia is performed by coupling Monte Carlo (MC) simulation for neutronics with "Multiphysics" model for thermal-hydraulics. Neutronic analyses have been performed starting from a MC model of the entire reactor system, based on the MCNP5 code, that was already validated in fresh fuel and zero-power configuration (in which thermal effects are negligible) using the available experimental data as benchmark. In order to describe the full-power reactor configuration, the temperature distribution in the core is necessary. To evaluate it, a thermal-hydraulic model has been developed, using the power distribution results from MC simulation as input. The thermal-hydraulic model is focused on the core active region and takes into account sub-cooled boiling effects present at full reactor power. The obtained temperature distribution is then introduced in the MC model and a benchmark analysis is carried out to validate the model in fresh fuel and full-power configuration. The good agreement between experimental data and simulation results concerning full-power reactor criticality, proves the reliability of the adopted methodology of analysis, both from neutronics and thermal-hydraulics perspective., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 2 appendixes. Abstract

Elastomers are widely used in radioactive environments, where ionizing radiations induce a deterioration of their properties due to degradative phenomena occurring in the polymer structure. Their radiation resistance is usually assessed using [gamma]-rays and relatively low dose rates, but in actual applications, they are often exposed to mixed radiation fields and higher dose rates. Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is known for its excellent resistance to [gamma]-rays but absorbs a larger dose by neutron interactions than fluoroelastomer (FPM). In this work, EPDM and FPM were irradiated in mixed neutron and gamma fields, using high dose rates (from 22 to 700 kGy [h.sup.-1]) and total absorbed doses between 0.2 and 3.5 MGy. The effects of irradiation were assessed by swelling tests, differential scanning calorimetry analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and tensile tests. The results show that, even if irradiations were carried out in air, degradation took place under nonoxidative conditions owing to the high dose rates employed. Under such conditions, crosslinking is the dominant radiation-induced reaction in both elastomers. Moreover, material degradation seems to be influenced mostly by the total absorbed dose and not by the type of radiation. Abstract

This work describes the most complete and up-to-date thermal-hydraulics CFD model for studying the natural circulation regime within the entire TRIGA Mark II reactor at the University of Pavia. Building on preliminary works, this paper tackles the treatment and investigation of natural circulation in the reactor core and pool, highlighting the coupling between the two components. Despite the assumptions behind the model – such as the use of an unsteady RANS turbulence model and the treatment of the supporting grids as a porous media – the validation compared to experimental data shows quite a good agreement. The model is thus accurate enough to describe the natural convection regime within the core and the pool and highlight local phenomena, such as localised sub-cooled boiling and recirculation.

Abstract

In this chapter, I focus on turning points. Changing one’s research as a result of acquiring and analysing new data is an integral part of doing qualitative research in the tradition of Grounded Theory Method (GTM). However, turning points, which are drastic and dramatic transformations, deviate from the gradual abstraction process described in the GTM field. As a result, turning points are a blind spot in the GTM literature. In recent years, scholars have indicated that researcher makes inferences, which have a more intuitive, creative, unspecified and novel character. Abduction has been used to describe and understand this cognitive process, that does not follow a clearly described systematic logic path. I will see whether abduction can be used to understand and develop the concept of turning points. I use examples from my own research experience to develop the concept of turning points in relation to abduction. I will refer to the ‘back-stage’ experience of doing qualitative research during three ethnographic studies. I will focus on the emotional, intuitive and conflictual experiences of applying GTM while doing qualitative research.

Abstract

Within European Partitioning & Transmutation research programs, infrastructures specifically dedicated to the study of fundamental reactor physics and engineering parameters of future fast-neutron-based reactors are very important, being some of these features not available in present zero-power prototypes. This presentation will illustrate the conceptual design of an Accelerator-Driven System with high safety standards, but ample flexibility for measurements. The design assumes as base option a 70 MeV, 0.75 mA proton cyclotron, as the one which will be installed at the INFN National Laboratory in Legnaro, Italy and a Beryllium target, with Helium gas as core coolant. Safety is guaranteed by limiting the thermal power to 200 kW, with a neutron multiplication coefficient around 0.94, loading the core with fuel containing Uranium enriched at 20% inserted in a solid-lead diffuser. The small decay heat can be passively removed by thermal radiation from the vessel. Such a system could be used to study, among others, some specific aspects of neutron diffusion in lead, beam-core coupling, target cooling and could serve as a training facility.
