Abstract

Carbon dioxide produced by human activities (i.e., use of fossil fuels, deforestation, and livestock farming) is the main greenhouse gas causing global warming. In 2020, the concentration in the atmosphere exceeded the pre-industrial level by 48% (before 1750). The study of natural CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions due to volcanic activity through innovative measurement techniques is the main goal of the IPANEMA project. These studies are both essential for the evaluation of natural CO2 emissions and for the development of future carbon capture and storage in underground geological formations to ensure that there are no leaks from the storage sites. Through the installation of two underwater acoustic stations, i.e., one in Panarea and one in the Gulf of Catania, we want to investigate techniques for estimating the flux of CO2 emitted by natural sources, locating emission sources, and, in general, monitoring volcanic activity.

Abstract

The ever-accelerating rate of research focusing on the issue of underwater noise pollution, particularly concerning low-frequency, continuous noise, has steadily been unveiling the myriad of detrimental ecological implications caused to marine life. Despite this, many European Member States, such as Malta, still lack solid monitoring and regulatory frameworks aimed at characterising and improving the state of the marine acoustic environment and achieving ‘Good Ecological Status’ in accordance with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. This shortcoming is directly reflected in the complete absence of baseline information covering the quality of the national soundscape. This paper aims to serve as a preliminary investigation into continuous underwater noise generation within Maltese waters, focusing on two sites characterised by heavy marine activity: Ċirkewwa and the Grand Harbour. Digital signal processing software packages (dBWav version 1.3.4) were used to extract and analyse sound pressure levels from in situ recorded audio files. Further statistical analysis was also carried out so as to evaluate the resultant snapshot of the baseline marine soundscapes at both sites. Furthermore, AIS data were used to tentatively identify the identifiable sources of underwater noise pollution. Given the current information lacuna revolving around the issue of underwater noise pollution in Malta, this paper may serve as a pilot study, with the aim of bridging this knowledge gap and forming the basis of future national research for Maltese marine conservation.

Abstract

The Mediterranean fin whale emits two types of 20-Hz calls, known as “classic” and “backbeat”, that can be produced in irregular series or in patterned sequences called songs. The analysis of songs is recognized as a meaningful approach to study baleen whales and can be used to investigate populations’ identities. Mediterranean fin whale songs have been studied previously, but only in the western Mediterranean Sea. This work describes the structure of the songs recorded in the Ionian Sea. The inter-note intervals and the alternation of 20-Hz note types were considered to assess the occurrence of recurring patterns. Differences between patterned songs and irregular sequences were also investigated. Acoustic data were sampled continuously for about 10 months by the cabled observatory NEMO-SN1, deployed at 2100 m depth, 25 km offshore Catania; 28 call sequences were isolated and 10 of these were classified as either patterned songs or irregular sequences. Significant differences were observed in the spectral features of classic notes between songs and irregulars; four-note patterns were found repeatedly over different months, indicating a regular structure in detected songs. This work establishes a reference to interpret Mediterranean fin whale songs, and to assess the acoustic behavior of the population.

Abstract

The patterns of movement of the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758)) in the Mediterranean Sea are still a matter of debate. Feeding aggregations are well known in the Corso-Liguro-Provençal Basin from July to September, but little is known for the autumn and winter seasons. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) was implemented in the Ligurian Sea to overcome this gap and to investigate the temporal and spatial variation of fin whale acoustic presence. From July to December 2011, five autonomous recorders were deployed at between 700 and 900 m depths. Fin whale calls were automatically detected almost every day, with higher vocalization rates in October, November, and December. Furthermore, daily vocalization rates were higher during light hours, and closer to the coast. These outcomes suggest that not all the individuals migrate, staying in the area also during autumn for feeding or breeding purposes. The dial cycle of vocalization might be related to feeding activities and zooplankton vertical migration, whereas the proximity to the coast can be explained by the morphology of the area that promotes the upwelling system. Although this work only represents a six-month period, certainly it suggests the need for a larger spatial and temporal PAM effort, crucial for species management and for mitigating possible impact of anthropogenic activities at the basin level.

Abstract

Abstract Dolphins emit short ultrasonic pulses (clicks) to acquire information about the surrounding environment, prey and habitat features. We investigated Delphinidae activity over multiple temporal scales through the detection of their echolocation clicks, using long-term Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM). The Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare operates multidisciplinary seafloor observatories in a deep area of the Central Mediterranean Sea. The Ocean noise Detection Experiment collected data offshore the Gulf of Catania from January 2005 to November 2006, allowing the study of temporal patterns of dolphin activity in this deep pelagic zone for the first time. Nearly 5,500 five-minute recordings acquired over two years were examined using spectrogram analysis and through development and testing of an automatic detection algorithm. Echolocation activity of dolphins was mostly confined to nighttime and crepuscular hours, in contrast with communicative signals (whistles). Seasonal variation, with a peak number of clicks in August, was also evident, but no effect of lunar cycle was observed. Temporal trends in echolocation corresponded to environmental and trophic variability known in the deep pelagic waters of the Ionian Sea. Long-term PAM and the continued development of automatic analysis techniques are essential to advancing the study of pelagic marine mammal distribution and behaviour patterns.

Abstract

Despite the growing interest in human-made noise effects on marine wildlife, few studies have investigated the potential role of underwater noise on elasmobranch species. In this study, twelve specimens of small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) were exposed to biological and anthropogenic sounds in order to assess their behavioural changes in response to prey acoustic stimuli and to different amplitude levels of shipping noise. The sharks, individually held in aquariums, were exposed to four experimental acoustic conditions characterized by different spectral (Hz) components and amplitude (dB re 1 µPa) levels. The swimming behaviour and spatial distribution of sharks were observed. The results highlighted significant differences in swimming time and in the spatial use of the aquarium among the experimental conditions. When the amplitude levels of biological sources were higher than those of anthropogenic sources, the sharks’ swimming behaviour was concentrated in the bottom sections of the aquarium; when the amplitude levels of anthropogenic sources were higher than biological ones, the specimens increased the time spent swimming. Moreover, their spatial distribution highlighted a tendency to occupy the least noisy sections of the aquarium. In conclusion, this study highlighted that anthropogenic noise is able to affect behaviour of catshark specimens and the impact depends on acoustic amplitude levels.

Abstract

The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) emits a typical short acoustic signal, defined as a "click", almost continuously while diving. It is produced in different time patterns to acoustically explore the environment and communicate with conspecifics. Each emitted click has a multi-pulse structure, resulting from the production of the sound within the sperm whale's head. A Stable Inter Pulse Interval (Stable IPI) can be identified among the pulses that compose a single click. Applying specific algorithms, the measurement of this interval provides useful information to assess the total length of the animal recorded. In January 2005, a cabled hydrophone array was deployed at a depth of 2,100 m in the Central Mediterranean Sea, 25 km offshore Catania (Ionian Sea). The acoustic antenna, named OνDE (Ocean noise Detection Experiment), was in operation until November 2006. OνDE provided real time acoustic data used to perform Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) of cetacean sound emissions. In this work, an innovative approach was applied to automatically measure the Stable IPI of the clicks, performing a cepstrum analysis to the energy (square amplitude) of the signals. About 2,100 five-minute recordings were processed to study the size distribution of the sperm whales detected during the OνDE long term deep-sea acoustic monitoring. Stable IPIs were measured in the range between 2.1 ms and 6.4 ms. The equations of Gordon (1991) and of Growcott (2011) were used to convert the IPIs into measures of size. The results revealed that the sperm whales recorded were distributed in length from about 7.5 m to 14 m. The size category most represented was from 9 m to 12 m (adult females or juvenile males) and specimens longer than 14 m (old males) seemed to be absent.

Abstract

In recent years, an increasing number of surveys have definitively confirmed the seasonal presence of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in highly productive regions of the Mediterranean Sea. Despite this, very little is yet known about the routes that the species seasonally follows within the Mediterranean basin and, particularly, in the Ionian area. The present study assesses for the first time fin whale acoustic presence offshore Eastern Sicily (Ionian Sea), throughout the processing of about 10 months of continuous acoustic monitoring. The recording of fin whale vocalizations was made possible by the cabled deep-sea multidisciplinary observatory, "NEMO-SN1", deployed 25 km off the Catania harbor at a depth of about 2,100 meters. NEMO-SN1 is an operational node of the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO) Research Infrastructure. The observatory was equipped with a low-frequency hydrophone (bandwidth: 0.05 Hz-1 kHz, sampling rate: 2 kHz) which continuously acquired data from July 2012 to May 2013. About 7,200 hours of acoustic data were analyzed by means of spectrogram display. Calls with the typical structure and patterns associated to the Mediterranean fin whale population were identified and monitored in the area for the first time. Furthermore, a background noise analysis within the fin whale communication frequency band (17.9-22.5 Hz) was conducted to investigate possible detection-masking effects. The study confirms the hypothesis that fin whales are present in the Ionian Sea throughout all seasons, with peaks in call detection rate during spring and summer months. The analysis also demonstrates that calls were more frequently detected in low background noise conditions. Further analysis will be performed to understand whether observed levels of noise limit the acoustic detection of the fin whales vocalizations, or whether the animals vocalize less in the presence of high background noise.

Abstract

Four different Marine Rapid Environmental Assessment (MREA) procedures are compared with a focus on underwater acoustic performance. Co-located oceanographic-acoustic data were collected during the summer of 2015 in the Northwestern Mediterranean in the framework of a sea trial led by the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation. The data were used to link MREA procedures and ocean-acoustic validation in a seamless framework. The MREA procedures consider Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) data, operational products from the Copernicus Marine Service, and two dynamical downscaling systems (with and without data assimilation). A portion of the oceanographic data are used for the assimilation procedure, and the remaining portion is withheld from the assimilation system for use as an independent verifying dataset. The accuracy of modelled acoustic properties is evaluated using the sound speed estimates from the different MREA methodologies as inputs to an acoustic model, and then comparing the modelled and observed acoustic arrival intensities and temporal structure. In 95% of the studied cases, the assimilative dynamical downscaling approach provides acoustic results equaling or exceeding in skill those modelled with the sound speed extracted from CTD casts. Acoustic assessment results indicate that our implementation of dynamical downscaling has skill at oceanographic scales of 4 km, about ten times larger than the ocean model horizontal resolution.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and experimental characterization of a Proton Sound Detector (ProSD), a device that physically captures and senses the weak acoustic signal emitted by the fast energy deposition at the end of the same proton beam range. The measured acoustic signal Time-of-Flight provides a very accurate ( $13~\mu \text{m}$ accuracy) measure of the proton beam penetration depth in water, improving the proton range verification accuracy w.r.t. previous works in pre-clinical scenarios. This suggests interesting possibilities for high-accuracy and real-time beam monitoring and calibration in hadron-therapy for cancer treatment. The detector has been fully characterized and tested with a physical 20 MeV proton beam in a water energy absorber. The ProSD and the water tank have been mounted in front of the exit layer of a 20 MeV 120 ns pulse time-width proton beam. A clear sinusoidal-like acoustic signal of 5 Pa and 2.3 MHz frequency has been detected at 12 dB SNR with 0.8 Gy single shot dose. After averaging 10 beam shots the achieved Signal-to-Noise-Ratio is 22 dB allowing a $\pm 7.5~\mu \text{m}$ precision vs. previously reported $\pm 45~\mu \text{m}$ ionoacoustic precision.

Abstract

KM3NeT/ORCA is a dense array that constitutes the low-energy branch of the KM3NeT project with the main goal of resolving the question of the neutrino mass ordering. At present, the KM3NeT/ORCA Phase 1 has already been deployed, which means that six out of the planned 115 detection lines are operational. Even with this limited configuration, neutrino oscillations can already be measured and studied. In this contribution, the sensitivity to the neutrino Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) parameter $\epsilon_{\mu \tau}$ using the current stage of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector together with the projections for the final configuration are presented.

Abstract

KM3NeT is a multi-purpose cubic-kilometer neutrino observatory under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of ORCA and ARCA (for Oscillation and Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss, respectively), currently both have a few detection lines in operation. Although having different primary goals, both detectors can be used for neutrino astronomy over a wide energy range, from a few tens of MeVs to a few tens of PeV. In view of the growing field of time-domain astronomy, it is crucial to be able to identify neutrino candidates in real-time. This online neutrino sample will allow triggered neutrino alerts that will be sent to the astronomy community and to look for time/space coincidences around external electromagnetic and multi-messenger triggers. These real-time searches can significantly increase the discovery potential of transient cosmic accelerators and refine the pointing directions in the case of poorly localized triggers, such as gravitational waves. In the field of core-collapse supernovae (CCSN), the detection of the MeV-scale CCSN neutrinos is crucial as an early warning of the electromagnetic follow-up. KM3NeT's digital optical modules act as good detectors for these supernovae neutrinos. Abstract

The patterns of movement of the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758)) in the Mediterranean Sea are still a matter of debate. Feeding aggregations are well known in the Corso-Liguro-Provençal Basin from July to September, but little is known for the autumn and winter seasons. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) was implemented in the Ligurian Sea to overcome this gap and to investigate the temporal and spatial variation of fin whale acoustic presence. From July to December 2011, five autonomous recorders were deployed at between 700 and 900 m depths. Fin whale calls were automatically detected almost every day, with higher vocalization rates in October, November, and December. Furthermore, daily vocalization rates were higher during light hours, and closer to the coast. These outcomes suggest that not all the individuals migrate, staying in the area also during autumn for feeding or breeding purposes. The dial cycle of vocalization might be related to feeding activities and zooplankton vertical migration, whereas the proximity to the coast can be explained by the morphology of the area that promotes the upwelling system. Although this work only represents a six-month period, certainly it suggests the need for a larger spatial and temporal PAM effort, crucial for species management and for mitigating possible impact of anthropogenic activities at the basin level.

Abstract

Despite the growing interest in human-made noise effects on marine wildlife, few studies have investigated the potential role of underwater noise on elasmobranch species. In this study, twelve specimens of small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) were exposed to biological and anthropogenic sounds in order to assess their behavioural changes in response to prey acoustic stimuli and to different amplitude levels of shipping noise. The sharks, individually held in aquariums, were exposed to four experimental acoustic conditions characterized by different spectral (Hz) components and amplitude (dB re 1 &micro, Pa) levels. The swimming behaviour and spatial distribution of sharks were observed. The results highlighted significant differences in swimming time and in the spatial use of the aquarium among the experimental conditions. When the amplitude levels of biological sources were higher than those of anthropogenic sources, the sharks&rsquo, swimming behaviour was concentrated in the bottom sections of the aquarium, when the amplitude levels of anthropogenic sources were higher than biological ones, the specimens increased the time spent swimming. Moreover, their spatial distribution highlighted a tendency to occupy the least noisy sections of the aquarium. In conclusion, this study highlighted that anthropogenic noise is able to affect behaviour of catshark specimens and the impact depends on acoustic amplitude levels.

Simple Summary To date there is not much information regard the role that sounds may play in the life of elasmobranchs. This gains particular importance if we consider the current understanding about noise pollution at sea. In fact, in the past few years, the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine fauna have received increasing attentions considering the plethora of repercussions deriving from the expansion of this type of pollution. Here, we exposed small-spotted catshark specimens kept in an aquarium, to different acoustic conditions to analyse the possible changes in swimming behaviour. Four different acoustic conditions consisted of biological sounds and anthropogenic noises. Abstract

KM3NeT will be a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector, to be installed at the Capo Passero site (Italy), is optimised for the detection of high-energy neutrinos of cosmic origin. Thanks to its geographical location on the Northern hemisphere, KM3NeT/ARCA can observe upgoing neutrinos from most of the Galactic Plane, including the Galactic Centre. Given its effective area and excellent pointing resolution, KM3NeT/ARCA will measure or significantly constrain the neutrino flux from potential astrophysical neutrino sources. At the same time, it will test flux predictions based on gamma-ray measurements and the assumption that the gamma-ray flux is of hadronic origin. Assuming this scenario, discovery potentials and sensitivities for a selected list of Galactic sources and to generic point sources with an $E^{-2}$ spectrum are presented. These spectra are assumed to be time independent. The results indicate that an observation with $3\sigma$ significance is possible in about six years of operation for the most intense sources, such as Supernovae Remnants RX\,J1713.7-3946 and Vela Jr. If no signal will be found during this time, the fraction of the gamma-ray flux coming from hadronic processes can be constrained to be below 50\% for these two objects., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

In this study, we exposed twelve specimens of small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) to biological and anthropogenic sounds in order to assess their behavioural changes potentially referable to pray presence and masking effect due to the shipping noise. Specifically, the sharks held individually in aquarium were exposed to four acoustic experimental conditions differentiated in their spectral (Hz) components (biological and anthropogenic mixed sources) and intensity (dB re 1 μPa) levels. Swimming behaviour and spatial distribution of the specimens were recorded. The results highlighted significant differences in time spent in swimming and in spatial use of the aquarium among the experimental conditions. The sharks concentrated their swimming behaviour in the aquarium’s lower sections when the intensity levels of the biological acoustic sources were higher than the anthropogenic ones. Conversely, when the intensity levels of the anthropogenic sources were higher than the biological, the specimens showed the highest values of time spent in swimming. Abstract

Since the early 2000s, thanks to national, regional and European projects, a number of abyssal detectors equipped with acoustic sensors have been installed and operated by INFN in two cabled submarine research infrastructures off Eastern Sicily. The INFN’s interest in underwater acoustics arises from the need to develop an acoustic positioning system for the KN3NeT telescope and to study the possibility of neutrino acoustic detection. Theuse of innovative technologies for data acquisition and transmission systems have enabled the first long-term studies on the deep marine environment of the Ionian Sea with a variety of lines of research. Data acquired through the INFN underwater infrastructures have allowed the continuous monitoring of the underwater acoustic noise and several studies on cetacean species present in the area and on seismic sources . An overview of the main activities of INFN on detection and localization of underwater acoustic sources will be presented.

Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope has an energy threshold of a few tens of GeV. This allows to study the phenomenon of atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance due to neutrino oscillations. In a similar way, constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model, which foresees the existence of one sterile neutrino, can be inferred. Abstract

Rough-toothed dolphin's abundance and distribution is largely unknown worldwide and evaluation of its conservation status in the Mediterranean Sea is necessary. A rough-toothed dolphin was sighted offshore Eastern Sicily (Mediterranean Sea) in July 2017 and acoustic data were acquired in the same area of Watkins, Tyack, Moore, and Notarbartolo di Sciara [(1987). Mar. Mamm. Sci. 3, 78–82]. An automatic detection algorithm was developed to identify the echolocation clicks recorded within both datasets and a recurrent inter-click interval value was identified during the new encounter. Distinctive whistle classes were also identified with similar contour shapes within both datasets.

Abstract

[EN] The Hamamatsu R12199-02 3-inch photomultiplier tube is the photodetector chosen for the first phase of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope. About 7000 photomultipliers have been characterised for dark count rate, timing spread and spurious pulses. 27. The KM3NeT acoustic positioning system

Abstract

The KM3NeT Collaboration is building two underwater neutrino detectors: ARCA (Astronomy Research with Cosmic in the Abysses), deployed at 3500 m depth in the Ionian Sea, offshore from Sicily, aiming at the measurement of cosmic neutrino signals and at the detection of astrophysical neutrino sources; ORCA (Oscillation Research with Cosmic in the Abysses), deployed at 2500 m depth, offshore from Toulon, south of France, aiming at the measurement of the neutrino mass hierarchy. In both detectors, the direction and the energy of the interacting neutrinos are reconstructed through the water Cherenov technique. The Cherenkov light, induced by the charged particles resulting from the neutrino interaction, is measured by an array of optical sensors, installed on slender strings anchored on the sea bottom, called Detection Units (DUs). In order to effectively reconstruct particle tracks, the optical sensors coordinates must be known (in a known reference system) with an accuracy of a few tens of cm. Moreover, since the mechanical structures holding the optical sensors move under the effect of sea currents, their positions must be continuously monitored. In KM3NeT the positioning is performed using an array of piezo-electric acoustic receivers and a long baseline of several acoustic emitters and hydrophones installed in fixed positions on the seabed. All the elements of the acoustic positioning system are synchronized with the detector master clock. After measuring the range between each emitter and receiver, position of receivers is obtained in real time via multilateration. First results obtained with the current minimal infrastructure (2 DUs and 3 emitters in the ARCA field) demonstrate that the acoustic system already achieves a resolution close to 50 cm. The full stream of acoustic data from each receiver is sent onshore and can be also utilized for environmental monitoring purposes and bioacoustic research.

Abstract

Dolphins emit short ultrasonic pulses (clicks) to acquire information about the surrounding environment, prey and habitat features. We investigated Delphinidae activity over multiple temporal scales through the detection of their echolocation clicks, using long-term Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM). The Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare operates multidisciplinary seafloor observatories in a deep area of the Central Mediterranean Sea. The Ocean noise Detection Experiment collected data offshore the Gulf of Catania from January 2005 to November 2006, allowing the study of temporal patterns of dolphin activity in this deep pelagic zone for the first time. Nearly 5,500 five-minute recordings acquired over two years were examined using spectrogram analysis and through development and testing of an automatic detection algorithm. Echolocation activity of dolphins was mostly confined to nighttime and crepuscular hours, in contrast with communicative signals (whistles). Seasonal variation, with a peak number of clicks in August, was also evident, but no effect of lunar cycle was observed. Temporal trends in echolocation corresponded to environmental and trophic variability known in the deep pelagic waters of the Ionian Sea. Long-term PAM and the continued development of automatic analysis techniques are essential to advancing the study of pelagic marine mammal distribution and behaviour patterns.

In the KM3NeT telescopes the Cherenkov radiation induced by the secondary charged particles produced in the interaction of cosmic and atmospheric neutrinos within an effective volume between megaton and several cubic kilometers of water are detected by an array of thousands of photomultipliers. The capability of the telescope to determine the direction of secondary charged particles and to point back to the neutrino source is strongly connected to the accuracy on photomultipliers positions. In KM3NeT, the photomultiplier positions are continuously monitored by an acoustic positioning system, designed by the KM3NeT Collaboration to reach an accuracy of the photomultiplier positions better than 20 cm.

Abstract

In March 2013, the Nemo Phase-2 tower was successfully deployed at 80 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy) at 3500 m depth. The tower operated continuously until August 2014. We present the results of the atmospheric muon analysis from the data collected in 411 days of live time. The zenith-angle distribution of atmospheric muons was measured and results compared with Monte Carlo simulations. The associated depth intensity relation was then measured and compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

Abstract

[EN] The KM3NeT research infrastructure, currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea, will host neutrino telescopes for the identification of neutrino sources in the Universe and for studies of the neutrino mass hierarchy. These telescopes will house hundreds of thousands of photomultiplier tubes that will have to be operated in a stable and reliable fashion. In this context, the stability of the dark counts has been investigated for photomultiplier tubes with negative high voltage on the photocathode and held in insulating support structures made of 3D printed nylon material. Small gaps between the rigid support structure and the photomultiplier tubes in the presence of electric fields can lead to discharges that produce dark count rates that are highly variable. A solution was found by applying the same insulating varnish as used for the high voltage bases directly to the outside of the photomultiplier tubes. Abstract

In underwater neutrino telescopes, the search of point-like sources through the Cherenkov detection technique requires a precise knowledge of the positions of thousands of optical sensors, spread in a volume of a few cubic kilometres. In KM3NeT the optical sensors are hosted in 700 m high semi-rigid structures, called detection units, which move under the effects of underwater currents. These movements are continuously monitored through an underwater positioning system based on acoustic emitters and receivers. In this work, the tests performed on the key elements of the positioning system are presented.

Abstract

The NEMO Phase-2 tower is the first detector which was operated underwater for more than one year at the "record" depth of 3500 m. It was designed and built within the framework of the NEMO (NEutrino Mediterranean Observatory) project. The 380 m high tower was successfully installed in March 2013 80 km offshore Capo Passero (Italy). This is the first prototype operated on the site where the italian node of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope will be built. The installation and operation of the NEMO Phase-2 tower has proven the functionality of the infrastructure and the operability at 3500 m depth. A more than one year long monitoring of the deep water characteristics of the site has been also provided. In this paper the infrastructure and the tower structure and instrumentation are described. The results of long term optical background measurements are presented. The rates show stable and low baseline values, compatible with the contribution of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. Abstract

Many threats affect fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) survival in the Mediterranean Sea and, among others, anthropogenic noise represents an issue of growing concern. In 2012, the cabled deep-sea multidisciplinary observatory, “NEMO-SN1”, was deployed in the Ionian Sea, at a depth of 2100 m. NEMO-SN1 was equipped with a seismic hydrophone, that allowed us to monitor fin whale and low frequency noise. In this paper we present the analysis of the acoustic data continuously acquired from 2nd July, 2012 to 10th May, 2013. Both shipping noise and seismic airgun pulses highly contributed to the low frequency background noise. Average values and percentile distribution of noise Power Spectral Density were measured on all the acquired data and, separately, in a contour of each airgun pulse detected. Seismic airgun pulses were detected in 4 of the 10 analyzed months and they were presumably produced hundreds of km away from sensor’s location. Abstract

The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) emits a typical short acoustic signal, defined as a "click", almost continuously while diving. It is produced in different time patterns to acoustically explore the environment and communicate with conspecifics. Each emitted click has a multi-pulse structure, resulting from the production of the sound within the sperm whale's head. A Stable Inter Pulse Interval (Stable IPI) can be identified among the pulses that compose a single click. Applying specific algorithms, the measurement of this interval provides useful information to assess the total length of the animal recorded. In January 2005, a cabled hydrophone array was deployed at a depth of 2,100 m in the Central Mediterranean Sea, 25 km offshore Catania (Ionian Sea). The acoustic antenna, named OνDE (Ocean noise Detection Experiment), was in operation until November 2006. OνDE provided real time acoustic data used to perform Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) of cetacean sound emissions. In this work, an innovative approach was applied to automatically measure the Stable IPI of the clicks, performing a cepstrum analysis to the energy (square amplitude) of the signals. About 2,100 five-minute recordings were processed to study the size distribution of the sperm whales detected during the OνDE long term deep-sea acoustic monitoring. Stable IPIs were measured in the range between 2.1 ms and 6.4 ms. The equations of Gordon (1991) and of Growcott (2011) were used to convert the IPIs into measures of size. The results revealed that the sperm whales recorded were distributed in length from about 7.5 m to 14 m. The size category most represented was from 9 m to 12 m (adult females or juvenile males) and specimens longer than 14 m (old males) seemed to be absent.

Abstract

The results of the analysis of the data collected with the NEMO Phase-2 tower, deployed at 3500 m depth about 80 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy), are presented. Cherenkov photons detected with the photomultipliers tubes were used to reconstruct the tracks of atmospheric muons. Their zenith-angle distribution was measured and the results compared with Monte Carlo simulations. An evaluation of the systematic effects due to uncertainties on environmental and detector parameters is also included. The associated depth intensity relation was evaluated and compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions. With the present analysis, the muon depth intensity relation has been measured up to 13 km of water equivalent., submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

[EN] KM3NeT is the next generation neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea employing the technique of Cherenkov photon detection. The Acoustic Positioning System (APS) is a mandatory sub-system of KM3NeT that must provide the position of the telescope¿s mechanical structures, in a geo-referenced coordinate system. The APS is important for a safe and accurate deployment of the mechanical structures and, for the sake of science, for precise reconstruction of neutrinoinduced events. The KM3NeT APS is composed of three main sub-systems: 1) an array of acoustic receivers rigidly connected to the telescope mechanical structures; 2) a Long Base-Line (LBL) of acoustic transmitters (beacons) and receivers, anchored on the seabed at known positions; 3) a farm of PCs for the acoustic data analysis, on-shore. On shore, the positions of the acoustic receivers are calculated by measuring the ToF (Time Of Flight) of the LBL beacons¿ signals on the acoustic receivers, thus determining, via multi-lateration, the position of the acoustic receivers with respect to the geo-referenced LBL. The synchronized and syntonized electronics and the data transmission/acquisition allows for calculating the latencies of the whole data acquisition chain with an accuracy of better than 100 ns. The APS, in combination with compass and tilt, pressure, current and sound velocity data, is expected to measure the positions of the digital optical modules in the deep sea with an accuracy of about 10 cm. Since data are continuously transmitted to shore and distributed to the local data acquisition network at the shore station, acoustic data are available also for Earth and Sea science users. The KM3NeT APS is also an excellent tool to study the feasibility of an acoustic neutrino detector and a possible correlation between acoustic and optical signals.

Abstract

In recent years, an increasing number of surveys have definitively confirmed the seasonal presence of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in highly productive regions of the Mediterranean Sea. Despite this, very little is yet known about the routes that the species seasonally follows within the Mediterranean basin and, particularly, in the Ionian area. The present study assesses for the first time fin whale acoustic presence offshore Eastern Sicily (Ionian Sea), throughout the processing of about 10 months of continuous acoustic monitoring. The recording of fin whale vocalizations was made possible by the cabled deep-sea multidisciplinary observatory, "NEMO-SN1", deployed 25 km off the Catania harbor at a depth of about 2,100 meters. NEMO-SN1 is an operational node of the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO) Research Infrastructure. The observatory was equipped with a low-frequency hydrophone (bandwidth: 0.05 Hz-1 kHz, sampling rate: 2 kHz) which continuously acquired data from July 2012 to May 2013. About 7,200 hours of acoustic data were analyzed by means of spectrogram display. Calls with the typical structure and patterns associated to the Mediterranean fin whale population were identified and monitored in the area for the first time. Furthermore, a background noise analysis within the fin whale communication frequency band (17.9-22.5 Hz) was conducted to investigate possible detection-masking effects. The study confirms the hypothesis that fin whales are present in the Ionian Sea throughout all seasons, with peaks in call detection rate during spring and summer months. The analysis also demonstrates that calls were more frequently detected in low background noise conditions. Further analysis will be performed to understand whether observed levels of noise limit the acoustic detection of the fin whales vocalizations, or whether the animals vocalize less in the presence of high background noise.

Abstract

Since 2005 a cabled deep-sea infrastructure is operative at 2100 m water depth, 25 km off the port of Catania (Sicily). The infrastructure, under continuous improvement, is the first operative cabled node of the EMSO-ERIC, hosting several multidisciplinary observatories built in collaboration by INFN, INGV, CNR, CIBRA, and other scientific partners. Hydrophones antennas, sensitive in the range of frequencies between 1 Hz and 90 kHz, have been installed on seafloor observatories. Acoustic data are continuously digitized in situ at very high resolution, time-stamped with absolute GPS time and sent to shore in real time, through optical fiber link. Together with biological sounds, noise pollution study and monitoring were the main goals of the research. Results of multi-year monitoring of anthropogenic noise are discussed. Focus of the analysis is the noise level in the octave bands centered at 63 Hz and 125 Hz, in compliance with the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The contribution of ship noise was...

An innovative Acoustic Positioning System for the km(3)-scale neutrino telescope has been designed and is under realization within the KM3NeT Consortium. Compared to the Acoustic Positioning Systems used for the km(3) demonstrators, ANTARES and NEMO Phase 1, this new system is based on the "all data to shore" concept and it will permit the enhancement of detector positioning performances, reduction of costs and its use as real-time monitor of environmental acoustic noise. Abstract

In March 2013, the Nemo Phase-2 tower has been successfully installed at 100 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy) and 3500 m depth. This 8-floor tower hosts 32 10-inch PMT's. Results from optical background measurements are presented. In particular, the analyzed rates show stable and low baseline values, compatible with the contribution of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. All these features are a confirmation of the stability and good optical nature of the site.

Abstract

In March 2013, the NEMO Phase 2 tower has been successfully installed in the Capo Passero site, at a depth of 3500 m and 80 km off from the southern coast of Sicily. The unfurled tower is 450 m high; it is composed of 8 mechanical floors, for a total amount of 32 PMTs and various instruments for environmental measurements. The tower positioning is achieved by an acoustic system. The tower is continuously acquiring and transmitting all the measured signals to shore. Data reduction is completely performed in the Portopalo shore station by a dedicated computing facility connected to the persistent storage system at LNS, in Catania. Results from the last 9 months of acquisition will be presented. In particular, the analyzed optical rates, showing stable and low baseline values, are compatible with the contribution mainly of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. These features reveal the optimal nature of the Capo Passero abyssal site to host a km3-sized Neutrino Telescope. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract

In the framework of the Phase 2 of the NEMO neutrino telescope project, a tower with 32 optical modules is being operated since march 2013. A new scalable Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TriDAS) has been developed and extensively tested with the data from this tower. Adopting the all-data-to-shore concept, the NEMO TriDAS is optimized to deal with a continuous data-stream from off-shore to on-shore with a large bandwidth. The TriDAS consists of four computing layers: (i) data aggregation of isochronal hits from all optical modules; (ii) data filtering by means of concurrent trigger algorithms; (iii) composition of the filtered events into post-trigger files; (iv) persistent data storage. The TriDAS implementation is reported together with a review of dedicated on-line monitoring tools.

Abstract

[EN] KM3NeT is a future neutrino telescope with a volume of several cubic kilometres at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. It will be composed of at least 300 vertical structures of several hundred metres length, named detection units (DU), anchored on the seabed and kept vertical with a buoy. The DU will host optical sensors able to detect the faint Cherenkov light emitted in the deep sea by charged particles originating from collisions of the neutrinos with nuclei in the sea water or the rock below. A precise knowledge of the optical sensor positions relative to each other, not worse than 20 cm, is needed for an accurate reconstruction of the charged particle tracks. Since the marine currents cause movements of the DUs and thus a displacement of the optical sensors of up to several tens of metres from their nominal positions, an Acoustic Positioning System (APS) is necessary to monitor their positions in deep sea. The KM3NeT APS will be composed of acoustic transceivers at fixed positions on the sea floor and acoustic receivers (hydrophones) along each DU. The hydrophone positions are determined by triangulation using the travel times of acoustic signals between emitters and receivers.
