This study examined the utility of a biopsychosocial model to explain both higher body mass index (BMI) and disordered eating. The study was designed to examine the predictors of higher BMI and a number of measures of disordered eating (dietary restraint, drive for muscularity, drive for thinness, binge eating, and compensatory behaviour). Young adults (N = 838) recruited from seven countries, grouped into four regions (Europe, North American countries, Australia, Japan), completed an online survey, with each completion being 12 months apart. The survey included assessments of BMI and disordered eating, and a range of biological, psychological and sociocultural factors expected to predict both outcomes. Results revealed unique patterns of association between predictors and BMI as well as different measures of disordered eating in the four geographical regions. The findings identify the specific nature of biopsychosocial factors that predict both higher BMI and different aspects of disordered eating. They also demonstrate that caution needs to be exercised in generalising findings from one country to other countries. PURPOSE: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) represents a rare but dangerous condition associated with controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) in IVF/ICSI. Over the last decades, many strategies have been introduced into clinical practice with the objective of preventing this potentially life-threatening condition. Among these, the freeze-all policy has gained great popularity, thanks to improvements in vitrification. Nevertheless, not all clinics have adequate skills in vitrification procedures and patients may be dissatisfied with a longer time to pregnancy. METHODS: This study is a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing different strategies of ovarian stimulation in IVF/ICSI cycles (freeze-all policy, algorithm-based individualization of the starting dose, experience-based individualization of the starting dose, standard dose) in terms of reduction of OHSS, in normal responders. RESULTS: The results indicate that only the algorithm-based individualization of the starting gonadotropin dose reduces OHSS similarly to the freeze-all strategy. CONCLUSION: Albeit in the era of the freeze-all policy, the personalization of the starting gonadotropin dose obtained by the use of algorithms should be pursued as a valid and safe option for IVF. INTRODUCTION: Restrained, emotional and intuitive eating were examined in relation to each other and as correlates of participants' weight status, body image and self-esteem. In some past research, restrained and emotional eating have been associated with higher weight status and poorer mental health, while intuitive eating is more frequently linked to lower weight status and more positive well-being. However, these eating styles have rarely been examined together and never in a large cross-country sample. METHOD: Six-thousand two-hundred and seventy-two (6272) emerging adults (M age = 21.54 years, SD = 3.13) completed scales from the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire, the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire, the Intuitive Eating Scale-2, the Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and provided weight and height information that was used to calculate body mass index (BMI). Participants resided in Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Spain and the United States and provided information using an online survey. RESULTS: Path analyses for the entire sample revealed significant pathways between higher intuitive eating and higher body satisfaction and self-esteem, and lower BMIs among participants. Higher levels of restrained and emotional eating were associated with lower body satisfaction and self-esteem, and higher BMIs among participants. Minor cross-country differences were evident in these patterns of relations, but intuitive eating emerged as a consistent predictor across countries. La psicoterapia di gruppo online è una esperienza molto recente in Italia, dove non era mai stata praticata prima delle restrizioni imposte dalla emergenza sanitaria. In quella occasione i terapeuti di gruppo hanno effettuato il passaggio dal setting in presenza a quello online apprendendo dalla esperienza diretta come gestire la relazione clinica mediata dallo schermo, in particolare rispetto alla amministrazione del setting, alle dinamiche del gruppo e allo stile di conduzione. Questi e altri fenomeni sono stati indagati attraverso un questionario compilato da 26 terapeuti di gruppo dopo tre mesi di pratica, che ha permesso di evidenziare impressioni, vissuti, difficoltà e opportunità legate a questa nuova esperienza.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between patients' mentalizing problematics and their personality; specifically, it aimed to identify clusters of individuals characterized by specific patterns of mentalizing imbalances and to analyze the relationship between these and diagnosis of personality disorder (PD), nonmentalizing modes, emotion dysregulation, and interpersonal reactivity.Four hundred therapeutic dyads were recruited. A part of these (n = 183) only completed clinician-report measures, Mentalization Imbalances Scale, and Modes of Mentalization Scale, while others (n = 217) also completed patients' self-report measures, which were Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and Interpersonal Reactivity Index.A latent profile analysis enlightened the presence of four clusters with problematics in the dimensions of mentalization, indicated by cluster names: (1) Affective-self-automatic profile (ASA-P) (with higher percentage of PDs); (2) External profile (E-P) (with lower percentage of PDs); (3) Others-automatic-affective profile (OAA-P); (4) Cognitive-self-automatic profile (CSA-P). Multivariate analysis of variances confirmed that the four clusters differed in relation to the quality of mentalization, emotional dysregulation and interpersonal reactivity, with higher levels of nonmentalization modes, uncertainty about mental states and emotion dysregulation in ASA-P, higher levels of good mentalization in E-P, lower impulsivity in CSA-P, and greater empathic concern in OAA-P.

Objective: The therapeutic alliance has been studied in group interventions, but its relationship to patient outcome is still controversial. This study systematically reviewed the association of both the member-leader and member-group alliance with patient outcomes, and assessed the effects of several theoretically informed moderators. Method: A three-level meta-analysis was conducted on 57 studies to disentangle within- and between-study variability in the alliance-outcome association. Results: The overall effect size of the unconditional model was r = -.259 (95% CI: -.302, -.214; p < .001), whereas the correlation between alliance and outcome based on the three-level meta-analytic model was r = -.215 (95% CI: -.252, -.178; p < .001) indicating a medium effect. Meta-regressions of moderators showed that the alliance-outcome correlation was higher when patients reported on their alliance with the group/other members compared with when they rated the alliance with the leader. Outcome type, rating perspective, theoretical orientation, treatment length, and year of publication were significant moderators of the relationship between alliance and outcome. Conclusions: The current meta-analysis highlighted that the therapeutic alliance, especially with other group members, is a significant predictor of outcomes in group therapies even after controlling for several moderators and adopting more conservative statistical modeling.What is the public health significance of this article? Prior research has established that member-leader alliance is a predictor of outcome in group psychotherapy with a small effect. This meta-analysis provides a comprehensive analysis of the complex role of the alliance in group therapy, suggesting that the alliance with other group members or the group as a whole has a significantly larger association with outcome. This study provides support for the importance of the group context on the alliance-outcome relationship.

Proponer un programa de formación teológica para profesionales de ayuda de la provincia de Huancayo - Junín, fundamentado en las teorías de los doctores Viktor E. Frankl y José Dunker fue el objetivo de esta investigación. Metodológicamente, enmarcada dentro del paradigma positivista con un enfoque cuantitativo. modalidad proyecto factible. La población estuvo constituida por 70 profesionales de la Provincia de Huancayo – Junín. Siendo la muestra conformada por 30 profesionales de las áreas de psiquiatras, psicólogos, orientadores y educadores. Esta investigación se abordó en dos fases: diagnóstico de las necesidades del profesional de ayuda para descifrar el enfoque teológico de la conducta humana y el diseño del programa para los profesionales de ayuda. Como técnica de recolección de datos se empleó la encuesta. El análisis de los resultados se realizó a través de la estadística descriptiva. Los resultados mostraron que el 50% de los profesionales consultados opinaron que sí, han aplicado conceptos religiosos en el campo laboral y un 77% expresó que si desean tener formación en el campo de la teología. Concluyendo, que los profesionales de ayuda y sus pacientes o clientes requieren de formación y capacitación teológica como herramienta holística necesaria en los procesos de orientación terapéutica con el fin de ayudarlos a entender el comportamiento humano en el ámbito social de manera integral.

Positive body image refers to individuals' ability to conceptualize their bodies with love, respect, and appreciation. The study of positive body image is relatively new, and instruments used to investigate this multi-faceted construct have received limited use in non-English speaking countries. Thus, the aim of this investigation is to consider four measures that are associated with positive body image across eight different countries. Participants (n = 6272) completed the Body Appreciation Scale-2, the Body Areas Satisfaction Scale, the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale, and the Weight Bias Internalization Scale. Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses (MG-CFAs) and item-response theory (IRT) models were used to examine the measurement invariance of these surveys. Our results generally suggest that positive body image, weight bias, and appearance comparison can be assessed using brief assessments and that these four instruments can be used in different countries, but care should be taken to consider individuals' gender, BMI, and socio-economic position. ispartof: BODY IMAGE vol:35 pages:320-332 ispartof: location:Netherlands status: published

The COVID-19 pandemic is increasing negative consequences on mental health around the globe. To date, research on what psychological factors could influence individuals’ distress is still scarce. The current study aims to test a multiple mediation model to examine the role of Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) and emotional regulation (i.e., expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal) as joint factors, which can increase understanding of psychological distress due to the COVID-19 outbreak. An online survey measuring fear of COVID-19, IU, emotional regulation, and psychological distress was administered to 3863 Italian adults (females 73.3%; Mage = 36.44; SD = 14.74) during lockdown. Results showed that IU partially mediated the effect of fear of COVID-19 on depression, anxiety and stress. Moreover, individuals with difficulties in managing the uncertainties due to their fear of COVID-19 may be at risk for heightened use of expressive suppression and depression. However, individuals with both higher IU and expressive suppression showed lower level of stress. High cognitive reappraisal has a mediational effect on the relationship between fear of COVID-19, IU, and lower psychological distress. Findings suggest that IU and emotional regulation should be targeted for informing the development of tailored treatments to reduce the negative consequences of the outbreak.

Although a range of risk factors have been identified for disordered eating and weight status, the breadth of risk factors have been rarely considered within a single, comprehensive model. The robustness of these findings across countries also remains an open question. The present study sampled 6272 participants aged 18-30 years from eight countries in an attempt to evaluate combined and unique predictors for these two conditions, and to explore possible cross-country differences in these models. Participants completed a range of demographic, biological, behavioral, psychological, and sociocultural measures to test a comprehensive model of the contributions of these predictors for disordered eating and weight-related constructs (binge eating, body mass index, compensatory behaviors, dietary restraint, drive for muscularity, and drive for leanness). Structural invariance testing within a multigroup path analysis framework revealed that a single model across the eight countries provided poor model fit. Freeing of 22% of parameters across countries provided excellent fit and a satisfactory compromise for country-invariant and country-variant parameters in the model. Overall, predictors accounted for between 15% and 60% of variance in the outcome measures, with lowest explained variance for the disordered eating outcomes. Significant unique contributions to prediction were observed for each of the five risk factor variable types and across the eight countries. Background: In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most group therapists moved their practice to online platforms. Surveys of psychotherapists indicate that many intend to maintain at least part of their practices online after the pandemic. This survey-based study is an attempt to identify therapist experiences with doing group therapy online, and to examine factors that are associated with therapist-rated outcomes. Method: We surveyed 307 group therapists about their ratings of the ease or difficulty in conducting group therapy online versus in-person, and indicators of patient outcomes in online groups. A confirmatory factor analysis resulted in a good fitting three latent factor solution: group therapeutic process factor (therapist ratings of ease to foster therapeutic alliance, group cohesion, and patient self-disclosure), group therapist factor (therapist presence, empathy, and focus in online therapy), and group therapeutic challenges factors in online work (related to the difficulty of working through conflict, managing avoidance, observing nonverbal communication, and discomfort during the online session). An online group therapy outcome factor was the dependent variable modeled as a latent factor of therapists' perception of patient outcomes and their own satisfaction with online groups. In a structural equation model, higher levels of the group therapeutic processes and group therapist factors, and lower group challenges were associated with higher online group therapy outcomes. Discussion: The present study suggests that online groups operate based on many of the same factors that have been supported in in-person group treatment. These factors were associated with the therapist's perceptions of online group effectiveness. However, difficulties in managing relationships in the online session may represent a barrier to enacting group therapeutic factors. Postpandemic research on conducting online group therapy and managing online therapeutic relationships may lessen perceived drawbacks to its use.

Objective: The aim of this work was to investigate the relationship between therapists' techniques (supportive/expressive intervention level - ESIL), therapists' countertransference (CT) and patients' defense level of functioning (ODF). We hypothesized that CT could play a mediating role in the relationship between patients' ODF and therapists' ESIL. Method: 65 psychotherapy sessions were rated by two different raters each with the Psychodynamic Interventions Rating Scale and the Defense Mechanisms Rating Scale. Clinicians used the Therapist Response Questionnaire to provide information on their CT. The 65 sessions referred to 65 clinicians (25 = females, 40 = males; 38 = psychodynamic, 27 = cognitive). More than half of the patients (n = 40; 61.5%) had a diagnosis of personality disorder. Among clinical disorders the most frequent were mood (n = 12) and anxiety disorders (n = 11). Five patients had no diagnosis. Results: Four CT responses (parental; positive; criticized; overinvolved) completely mediated the relationship between patients' ODF and therapists' ESIL, while no effect resulted in relation to overwhelmed, helpless, sexualized and disengaged CTs. No effect of theoretical orientations on mediation pathways was found. Conclusion: Both positive and negative CT feelings seemed to play a crucial role in the relationship between therapists' interventions and patients' ODF.

Study question Is the incidence of miscarriage rates increased in frozen embryo transfer (ET) compared with fresh ET? Summary answer The frozen ET is not associated with an increased risk of miscarriage in comparison with fresh ET. What is known already Nowadays, the freeze-all policy has gained great popularity because it minimizes OHSS and it seems to improve the reproductive outcomes. This increase was possible thanks to progress in vitrification procedures. Nevertheless, some recent evidence suggests more caution on the wide use of elective frozen ET in a general IVF population for its possible effect on some pregnancy-related complications. Endometrial preparation schemes for frozen ET include natural cycles or, more frequently, artificial cycles in which the endometrium is prepared with exogenous steroids. In this last case, the corpus luteum is absent, but its demise could be correlated with some pregnancy-related complications. Study design, size, duration A meta-analysis, based on PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, EMBASE, was conducted to estimate and compare the miscarriage rate (MR) in frozen versus fresh ET. Following PICOS, inclusion criteria were: Population, patients undergoing IVF/ICSI; Intervention, frozen ET; Comparison, fresh ET; Outcome, MR (primary one); clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), ongoing pregnancy rate (OPR) and live birth rates (LBR) (secondary ones). Study design: RCT. Participants/materials, setting, methods Electronic and manual search, conducted from 1990 to 2020, yielded 269 studies. Two researchers reviewed the studies independently, excluding 247 and 14 studies after the first and second screening. The outcome data from the 8 included studies were combined using a Mantel–Haenszel model and applying the random effects models. The dichotomous data results of each study were expressed as risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 statistic. Main results and the role of chance The eight studies comprise 6,934 participants, 3,450 undergoing frozen ET and 3,484 fresh ET (Ferraretti et al., 1999; Shapiro et al., 2011a; Shapiro et al.; 2011b; Chen et al., 2016; Shi et al., 2018; Le et al., 2018; Wei et al., 2019; Stormlund et al., 2020). Preliminary analyses excluded interaction between covariates. RR of miscarriage ranged from 0.29 (Chen et al., 2016) to 3.24 (Ferraretti et al., 1999). The level of heterogeneity (I2) was 48% and it was considered as moderate. MR resulted not significantly different in frozen [279/1,601 pregnancies] compared with fresh ET [308/1,458 pregnancies] (RR = 0.727, 95%CI=0.43–1.25, p = 0.25). By analysing the 5 trials in which the endometrium was prepared with steroids (Ferraretti et al., 1999; Shapiro et al., 2011a; Shapiro et al., 2011b; Chen et al., 2016; Le et al., 2018), MR resulted not significantly different in frozen [126/720] versus fresh ET [160/682] (RR = 0.605, 95%CI 0.22–1.66; p = 0.33; I2=43%). For the secondary outcomes, CPR (RR = 1.14; 95%CI=0.97–1.35; 0.56 vs 0.52 for frozen and fresh ET, respectively), OPR (RR = 1.12; 95%CI=0.95–1.33; 0.49 vs 0.46 for frozen and fresh ET, respectively) and LBR (RR = 0.93; 95%CI=0.60–1.44; 0.49 vs 0.47 for frozen and fresh ET, respectively) were not significantly different between the two groups. Limitations, reasons for caution The MR was not the primary outcome of the included RCTs. This could have determined a sample size not calibrated for the analysis of the primary outcome of the present meta-analysis. Wider implications of the findings: This meta-analysis indicates that MR was similar between frozen and fresh ET. The endometrial preparation, in artificial cycles without corpus luteum, does not seem to influence the good course of pregnancy. Based on these results, the choice of a fresh ET should not derive by the presumed reduction of MR. Trial registration number Not applicable

Study question Is the incidence of ectopic pregnancy (EP) increased in fresh compared with frozen embryo transfer (ET)? Summary answer The fresh ET is not associated with an increase of the incidence of EP in comparison with frozen ET. What is known already EP represents the first cause of mortality in the first trimester of pregnancy. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are associated with an increased EP risk. The reasons of this effect are inadequately explained and may be associated with variables patients-related as tubal diseases and ART-related as the number of embryos transferred, the depth of insertion of the catheter tip during ET and the supraphysiological estradiol levels during ovarian stimulation affecting endometrial receptivity and tubal function. The role of this last factor seems to be corroborated by higher incidence of EP in fresh versus frozen ET, as highlighted by some retrospective studies. Preliminary analyses excluded interaction between covariates, defining intervention/control groups and outcome. In particular, the incidence of tubal infertility was comparable between the two groups. Risk ratio of EP ranged from 0.03 (Ferraretti et al., 1999) to 2.77 (Shi et al., 2018). The level of heterogeneity (I2) between studies was 42% and it was considered as moderate. EP incidence resulted not significantly different in fresh ET [56/1,703 pregnancies] compared with frozen ET [44/1,799 pregnancies] (RR = 0.450, 95% CI 0.13–1.81, p = 0.29; I2=42%). Analysis of the secondary outcomes was conducted on 5 studies; results showed that clinical pregnancy rate was not significantly different between fresh (0.52) and frozen ET (0.56) (RR = 1.11; 95% CI = 0.93–1.34); at the same manner, the ongoing pregnancy rate (RR = 1.11; 95%CI=0.91–1.37; 0.46 vs 0.49 for fresh and frozen, respectively) and the live birth rate (RR = 0.93; 95%CI=0.60–1.44; 0.47 vs 0.49 for fresh and frozen, respectively) resulted not significantly different between the two groups. Limitations, reasons for caution The EP incidence was not the primary outcome of the included RCTs. This could have determined a sample size not calibrated for the analysis of the primary outcome of the present meta-analysis. Wider implications of the findings: This meta-analysis indicates that EP incidence is similar between fresh and frozen ET. The possible role on EP risk of the supraphysiological estradiol levels during ovarian stimulation should be reconsidered. Based on these results, the choice of a frozen ET should not derive by the presumed reduction of EP risk. Trial registration number Not applicable

Study question What is the clinical efficacy of an oocyte donation program based on the transportation of vitrified oocytes between two countries? Summary answer The transnational oocyte donation program is efficient, safe and comparable to other strategies (transport of frozen sperm and embryos). What is known already Egg donation represents a valid treatment strategy for women who have exhausted their ovarian function and it has considerably increased in the last years. In Italy, egg donation is allowed after the judgment of the Constitutional Court n. 162 in 2014 but no reimbursement for the donors is provided. For this reason, the number of voluntary donors is irrelevant. Therefore, the great majority of egg donation cycles is carried out by using imported cryopreserved oocytes from foreign countries. However, recent evidence has questioned the overall efficacy of this strategy in comparison with the shipment of frozen sperm and vitrified embryos. Study design, size, duration A retrospective cohort study was conducted between July 2015-December 2020 at two private IVF clinics. 264 couples were treated (mean maternal age: 43.1± 4.6 years, range: 26–51; mean donor age: 24 ±3 years, range: 20–33) with vitrified oocytes shipped from a single Spanish egg bank (IMER, Valencia) to the receiving reproductive clinic in Italy (ANDROS Clinic, Palermo). All the oocytes for each batch were thawed. Participants/materials, setting, methods The primary outcome of this study was the cumulative clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) among the completed cycles for each batch of oocytes. Those cycles in which a clinical pregnancy was obtained, or all embryos derived by a single batch of oocytes had been transferred or no embryo was produced were defined as completed. In addition to main analyses, sensitivity analysis was performed to examine how the number of inseminated oocytes may affect CPR. Main results and the role of chance 2,367 oocytes in 355 batches were sent from Spain to Italy. 2,209 oocytes in 334 batches for 264 patients were thawed with a survival rate of 82.4% (1,821/2,209). The mean number of oocytes received per patient was 6.6 ± 1.0. The fertilization rate was 72.1% (1,312/1,821). 499 embryos were transferred (38.0%), 335 at the cleavage stage (67.1%) and 164 at the blastocyst stage (32.9%); 197 supernumerary embryos were vitrified (15.0%), 18 at the cleavage stage (9.1%) and 179 at the blastocyst stage (90.9%). 616 embryos were not viable (47.0%). No more than two embryos were transferred for each embryo transfer (ET). The completed cycles were 307 out of 334 (91.9%). The CPR per completed cycles was 46.6% (143/307) and 54.2% per patient (143/264). Clinical pregnancy rate per fresh ET in completed cycles with supernumerary cryopreserved embryos was significantly higher compared with that of the completed cycles without surplus embryos (56/101 versus 68/193, p = 0.001). Logistic regression revealed that the number of inseminated oocytes was positively associated with CPR in a significant manner (B = 0.220, p = 0.007; OR = 1.25, 95%CI=1.06–1.47). The multiple pregnancy rate was 15.4% (1 triplet and 21 twin pregnancies). The miscarriage rate was 22.4% (32/143). Limitations, reasons for caution The retrospective design of the study needs to be confirmed in larger and multicenter prospective studies comparing the strategy of vitrified donated oocytes and fresh ET with the policy of fresh donated oocyte and frozen/thawed ET. Wider implications of the findings: The transnational oocyte donation program with vitrified oocytes is associated with good success rates. The number of inseminated oocytes represents a crucial factor for increasing the CPR, improving the embryo selection for fresh ET and giving more chances of pregnancy with the transfer of surplus vitrified embryos. Background and aims From residential programs to outpatient services, group therapy permeates the clinical field of substance misuse. While several group interventions for substance use disorders (SUDs) have demonstrated effectiveness, the existing evidence on group therapy has not been systematically reviewed. The current meta-analysis aims to provide estimates of the efficacy of group therapy for SUDs in adults using rigorous methods. Methods We included studies comparing group psychotherapy to no treatment control groups, individual psychotherapy, medication, self-help groups, and other active treatments applying no specific psychotherapeutic techniques for patients with substance use disorder. The primary outcome was abstinence, and the secondary outcomes were frequency of substance use and symptoms of substance use disorder, anxiety, depression, general psychopathology, and attrition. A comprehensive search was conducted in Medline, Web of Science, CENTRAL, and PsycINFO, complemented by a manual search. Random-effects meta-analyses were run separately for different types of control groups. Results Thirty-three studies were included. Significant small effects of group therapy were found on abstinence compared to no treatment, individual therapy, and other treatments. Effects on substance use frequency and SUD symptoms were not significant, but significant moderately sized effects emerged for mental state when group therapy was compared to no treatment. There were no differences in abstinence rates between group therapy and control groups. These results were robust in sensitivity analyses and there was no indication of publication bias. Conclusions The current findings represent the best available summary analysis of group therapy for SUDs in adults, however cautious interpretation is warranted given the limitations of the available data.

Coronavirus 2019 pandemic lockdown in Italy lasted for 2 months, 1 week and 2 days. During this long period, one of the longest in Europe, the restrictions produced effects on people’s psychological well-being, with consequences that also continued after lockdown. The purpose of the study is to investigate these effects and how they changed in the general population over a period of time. We are also interested in exploring people’s post-lockdown anxiety and concerns. We conducted an online survey using snowball sampling techniques. The longitudinal study consisted of four administrations covering a period of 10 weeks between April (baseline) and June (last follow-up). Levels of anxiety and depression were assessed by GAD-7 and PHQ-9, coping strategies were assessed by Brief Resilient Coping Scale (BRCS) and social support was assessed by MSPSS. Post-lockdown anxiety was explored by developing a set of ad-hoc questions. PCA was used to determine the principal categories of post-lockdown anxiety/concern resulting from the ad-hoc questions. Longitudinal data, given their nested structure, were analyzed through mixed modeling. Of the 411 responders at baseline, 169 had at least 3 out of 4 data points; the analysis was therefore conducted on this sample. Levels of depression and anxiety were found to be significantly higher in the study sample in comparison with normative samples for each of the fourtime points; levels of coping showed that scores from the study sample were significantly lower than normative data at all-time points. Levels of perceived social support were significantly lower than normative data at the baseline and the first follow-up. The results of the study suggest that the lockdown experience had enduring consequences on the mental health of individuals. Prevention and support interventions to limit the psychological distress caused by COVID-19 should be taken into consideration in countries experiencing a second wave of the pandemic.

The social microcosm is defined as group members replicating their everyday (intersession) interpersonal behaviors in group sessions and new behaviors, learned in the group (in-session), replicating in the members' everyday life. We examined intersession and in-session intimate behaviors, at the within-member (differences in intimate behaviors between weeks/sessions), between-member (average differences in intimate behaviors between group members) and between-groups (group-level differences in intimate behaviors). Participants were 178 graduate students (86% identifying as women and 14% as men) participating in 10 5-session growth groups led by experienced group therapists. Before group sessions, group members completed the Interpersonal Relations Scale Checklist (IRScl; Shadish, 1984) indicating their number of intersession intimate behaviors for the previous week and, at the end of group sessions, they filled in the IRScl to indicate their in-session intimate behaviors. A 3-level HLM analysis (sessions, members, groups) predicting in-session intimate behaviors from previous week intersession intimate behaviors showed significant within-member, between-member, and between-groups effects. A second 3-level HLM analysis (sessions, members, groups), predicting following week intersession intimate behaviors from in-session intimate behaviors, showed significant between-member and between-groups effects. Between-member and within-member in-session intimate behaviors interacted to predict intersession intimate behaviors. Group members who generally had a low number of in-session intimate behaviors engaged in more intersession intimate behaviors in weeks following sessions with higher than average in-session intimate behaviors. These results provide support for the social microcosm proposition that members' trait-like everyday behaviors are replayed in the group. However state-like and other-member everyday behaviors also contribute to members' social microcosm. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Background Although preliminary research has evidenced negative psychological consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic among the general population, little research has been carried out examining the interplay among the broader dimensions and correlates of individual distress. Via network analysis, the current study investigated the pathways that underlie some components of psychological distress and their changes over time (during and post COVID-19-related lockdown). Methods 1,129 adult participants (79.1% women) completed a two-wave online survey during and after the lockdown, and reported on variables such as depression, anxiety, stress, fear of COVID, intolerance of uncertainty, emotion regulation and social support. The networks were estimated via Gaussian Graphical Models and their temporal changes were compared through the centrality measures. Results Depression, stress, anxiety and fear of COVID formed a spatially contiguous pattern, which remained unchanged in both the two waves. After the lockdown, the fear of COVID node reduced its strength in the network, whereas inhibitory intolerance of uncertainty and emotion suppression were associated with depression. Emotion regulation was connected to depression, but not to stress and anxiety during both waves. Perceived emotional support had few connections to the other nodes. Limitations Only 32.7% of participants provided complete responses for both waves. Conclusion The COVID-19 outbreak has had a significant psychosocial impact on adults. In the context of the network approach, depressive symptoms had the highest strength and their associations to other dimensions of individual distress may be key factors in understanding the influence of exposure to the COVID-19 outbreak on mental health.

Background: Mentalizing, the mental capacity to understand oneself and others in terms of mental states, has been found to be reduced in several mental disorders. Some studies have suggested that eating disorders (EDs) may also be associated with impairments in mentalizing. The aim of this work is to investigate the possible presence of mentalizing subtypes in a sample of patients with EDs.Method: A sample of patients with eating disorders (N = 157) completed a battery of measures assessing mentalization and related variables, including the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Strategies (DERS), the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). Clinicians rated patients in relation to imbalances in different dimensions of mentalization to prementalizing modes and attachment style by using the Mentalization Imbalances Scale, the Modes of Mentalization Scale (MMS), and the Adult Attachment Questionnaire. A latent profile analysis was conducted to test the possible presence of different subgroups. MANOVA was used to test the possible differences between the four mentalizing profiles in relation to emotion dysregulation (DERS), empathy (IRI), and adequate and impairments in mentalizing (MMS and RFQ).Results: The latent profile analysis suggested the presence of four different profiles in relation to impairments in the dimensions of mentalization: (1) affective/self/automatic imbalances, (2) external imbalance, (3) cognitive/self/automatic imbalances, and (4) cognitive/other/automatic imbalances. Patients belonging to profile 1 are characterized by the prevalence of affective mentalization that overwhelms the capacity to reflect on mental states with an imbalance on the self-dimension; profile 2 patients are excessively focused on the external cues of mentalization; profile 3 patients are characterized by an over-involvement on the cognitive and self-facets of mentalization, with an impairment in adopting the other mind perspective; and profile 4 patients have similar impairments compared to profile 3 patients but with an excessive focus on others and deficits in self-reflection. These profiles were heterogeneous in terms of EDs represented in each group and presented significant differences on various variables such as attachment style, emotion dysregulation, empathy, interpersonal reactivity, and reflective function. This study represents, so far, the first work that confirms the presence of different mentalizing patterns in ED patients.Conclusions: ED patients can be classified in relation to impairments in different dimensions of mentalization above and beyond ED diagnosis.

Several psychological interventions have been activated to help people during the Coronavirus pandemic, and research highlights the crucial role of group interventions as a space for sharing and processing the psychological experiences linked to this emergency and the consequent changes in people’s lifestyles. In this context, psychologists are mostly providers of this kind of service more than users. This study aimed at investigating and comparing post-hoc the subjective experience of psychotherapists, psychology trainees & students, and individuals of the general population who participated in a psychodynamically-oriented supportive group intervention. Fifty-two subjects were enrolled to participate to focus groups aimed at exploring participants’ decision to participate, their perceptions on how the support group influenced their elaboration of the psychological effects of pandemic/lockdown, and their feedback on its utility. Transcripts of the focus groups were analyzed with the Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC). Differences in the use of words/linguistic categories between groups were tested through chi-square tests. Content analysis was conducted by independent judges who extracted the most relevant comments. Preliminary results showed the main features related to the crisis response, and how belonging to different social roles was associated with different ways of experiencing and sharing emotions. People react in different ways to traumatic events, and how people react may say a lot about how they cope with the event and the extent to which the event plays a role in the future. Clinical implications on the use of this data for future treatment planning are also discussed.

The Group Questionnaire (GQ) is a measure recently developed by Krogel et al. (2013) for the evaluation of the therapeutic relationship in group. The GQ identifies a three-factor model of the relationship that allows to measure quality (Positive Bonding, Positive Working and Negative Relationship) and structure (member-member, member-leader and member-group), dimensions in group. This work shows the results of a first study on the Italian validation of the GQ. In this study the GQ was administered to 536 subjects from 32 non-clinical groups of undergraduate students. The cross-cultural validity of the GQ in the Italian population has been examined by comparing the psychometric properties and equivalence in factor structure and scores of the Italian GQ with the original American version. Multilevel confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine both the between- and within-group structures. Data concerning reliability and validity of GQ and the results for different SEM in Multilevel CFA confirm the three factors structure of the GQ. Data from the Italian population have a good fit with the original proposed model. Finally, we discuss the importance of an instrument like GQ, short but consistent, for the evaluation of the therapeutic relationship in clinical and training group.

The aim of this study was to examine the cross-country invariance of five well-established measures of body weight and shape concern-related attitudes and behaviors (i.e., drive for leanness, drive for muscularity, strategies to increase muscle, strategies to lose weight, and weight and shape concerns). A secondary objective was to examine the effects of several sociodemographic factors (age, BMI, socioeconomic status, and gender) on item and latent factor scores of these constructs. A total of 6272 emerging adults (4218 women; Mage = 21.46, SD = 3.11) from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the U.S. completed a self-report online survey as part of a larger study. Overall, support for partial invariance both across countries and in terms of the considered sociodemographic factors was found for reduced versions of the five measures. Significant differences in latent means were found across countries, these being of greater magnitude for drive for leanness and strategies to lose weight. The considered sociodemographic factors (most notably BMI and gender) were associated with the latent mean scores of the assessed constructs. The present study contributes to current literature by providing cross-cultural invariant versions of several measures of relevance in the field of body image.

This study examined the measurement invariance of three scales that assessed emotional eating, restrained eating, and intuitive eating across eight countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Spain and the United States) in order to determine their suitability for cross-country body image research. A total of 6272 young adults took part in this study. Participants completed an online survey including the Emotional Eating subscale of the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-Revised 21, the Restraint subscale of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, and the Reliance on Hunger and Satiety Cues subscale of The Intuitive Eating Scale-2. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate potential cross-country differences in functioning of the measures. Partial invariance for all three scales was found, with only minor levels of non-invariance identified. Multiple indicator multiple cause models identified BMI and gender as potential influences on scores for these measures. Sources of invariance across groups are discussed, as well as implications for further substantive research across countries involving these measures.

The number of oocytes retrieved is a relevant intermediate outcome in women undergoing IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This trial compared the efficiency of the selection of the FSH starting dose according to a nomogram based on multiple biomarkers (age, day 3 FSH, anti-Mullerian hormone) versus an age-based strategy. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of women with an optimal number of retrieved oocytes defined as 8-14. At their first IVF/ICSI cycle, 191 patients underwent a long gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist protocol and were randomized to receive a starting dose of recombinant (human) FSH, based on their age (150 IU if ≤35 years, 225 IU if >35 years) or based on the nomogram. Optimal response was observed in 58/92 patients (63%) in the nomogram group and in 42/99 (42%) in the control group (+21%, 95% CI = 0.07 to 0.35, P = 0.0037). No significant differences were found in the clinical pregnancy rate or the number of embryos cryopreserved per patient. The study showed that the FSH starting dose selected according to ovarian reserve is associated with an increase in the proportion of patients with an optimal response: large trials are recommended to investigate any possible effect on the live-birth rate.

We compared each individual group member’s attachment fit with the attachment of the other group members. Participants were 201 members of 20 therapy groups who sought treatment because they were overweight or obese. Group members completed the Attachment Style Questionnaire before commencing treatment and the Group Questionnaire at three points during group treatment. Multilevel polynomial regression followed by response surface analysis was used to examine how the attachment anxiety and avoidance of the individual group member and the aggregated attachment anxiety and avoidance of the group members were related to individual group members’ perceptions of the positive bonding, positive working relationships, and negative relationships in the group. The findings suggested that attachment heterogeneity in group is related to the perception of members’ stronger bonding relationships and lower negative relationships. In addition, positive bonding can be increased when a patient high in attachment avoidance is added to a group whose patients are low in attach- ment avoidance; however, group members reported weaker negative relationships when their attachment anxiety or avoidance became increasingly higher or lower than other group members’ attachment anxiety or avoidance.

A group member’s attachment, anxiety, and avoidance is related to how the group member and the other group members (OGMs) perceive group relationships. In addition, the collective attachment strategies of the OGMs may also be related to how the individual group member and the others perceive the relationships in the group. We extend previous research, using the actor partner interdependence model (APIM), to examine how group members’ and aggregated OGMs’ attachment anxiety and avoid- ance were related to group members’ and OGMs perceptions of positive bonding, positive working, and negative relationships measured early and late in interpersonal growth groups. Three hundred twenty-five Italian graduate students were randomly assigned to 1 of 16 interpersonal growth groups that met for 9 weeks with experienced psychologists. Attachment anxiety and avoidance was assessed with the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) and the third and eighth session ratings of group relationships were assessed with the Group Questionnaire (GQ). For group members, the relationships between attachment and group relationships were stable across time; for OGMs the relation- ship between attachment and group relationships only emerged late in the group. Group member’s and OGMs attachment anxiety was positively related to positive bonding or working relationships and attachment avoidance was negatively related to positive bonding or working relationships for both group member’s and OGMs’ perceptions of group relationships. The implication of these findings for group composition is discussed.

Although recent research has provided empirical support for the codevelopment of group interaction (defined as development in a common direction of perceptions of group relationships), no studies have yet investigated the "causes" of codevelopment among group members in the long term. The aim of the current study is to examine how the perceptions of an individual group member, and other group members, regarding group relationships influence each other over the course of treatment. We analyzed group data from 168 adult obese patients who participated in (1 of 20) 12-session therapy groups for weight management. Group relationships were measured by the Group Questionnaire (Krogel et al., 2013), which was administered to group members in early, middle and late group sessions. The longitudinal version of the group actor-partner interdependence model was used to analyze the influence among members. Results showed that there is no mutual influence in the codevelopment of both positive bonding and negative relationship. However, positive bonding of other group members in the middle of the group influenced positive bonding of the individual group member in the late group session. Moreover, individual group member negative relationships in early and middle sessions influenced other group member negative relationships in middle and late sessions. Finally, there was evidence of mutual influence in the codevelopment of positive working early in the group. The findings show that the process of influence among members is complex with regard to the specific dimension of the group relationship assessed and the time spent in group treatment. Background: Personal characteristics and relational skills represent central aspects of the psychotherapist's work, and yet, little is still known about them in the context of psychotherapy training. Objective: This paper presents a preliminary exploration of the self-concepts of relational skills in psychotherapy trainees. Changes in the self-concept in N = 131 psychotherapy trainees were explored through analysis of self-image ideal-self and self/ ideal-self discrepancy in two stages (beginning vs. advanced). Method: Data were collected with a modified version of the self-rated instruments Trainee Background Information Form and Trainee Current Practice Report (Orlinsky et al., 2015), and analysed with analyses of covariances for each dependent variable. Results: Expected differences in the self-image of beginning versus advanced trainees were not detected. However, differences in trainees’ ideal-self and in self/ideal-self discrepancy were found. Some gender and age differences were also detected. Conclusions: The results suggest possible changes in the self-concept of relational skills, indicative of self-development processes such as discovering a realistic sense of self and self-boundaries, managing intensive emotional interactions and developing regulatory interpersonal mechanisms. An in-depth and more refined future exploration of various aspects of the self-concept in the context of psychotherapy training is needed to help understand the complex processes of forming an integrated self of psychotherapists.

Groups are more effective when positive bonds are established and interpersonal conflicts resolved in early sessions and work is accomplished in later sessions. Previous research has provided mixed support for this group development model. We performed a test of this theoretical perspective using group members' (actors) and aggregated group members' (partners) perceptions of positive bonding, positive working, and negative group relationships measured early and late in interpersonal growth groups. Participants were 325 Italian graduate students randomly (within semester) assigned to 1 of 16 interpersonal growth groups. Groups met for 9 weeks with experienced psychologists using Yalom and Leszcz's (2005) interpersonal process model. Outcome was assessed pre- and posttreatment using the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, and group relationships were measured at Sessions 3 and 6 using the Group Questionnaire. As hypothesized, early measures of positive bonding and late measures of positive working, for both actors and partners, were positively related to improved interpersonal problems. Also as hypothesized, late measures of positive bonding and early measures of positive working, for both actors and partners, were negatively related to improved interpersonal problems. We also found that early actor and partner positive bonding and negative relationships interacted to predict changes in interpersonal problems. The findings are consistent with group development theory and suggest that group therapists focus on group-as-a-whole positive bonding relationships in early group sessions and on group-as-a-whole positive working relationships in later group sessions.
