6. Ankle Joint Dorsiflexion Reference Values in Non-Injured Youth Federated Basketball Players: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

(1) Background: The aim of the present study was to establish ankle joint dorsiflexion reference values among youth federated basketball players. (2) Methods: Cross-sectional study. The participants were basketball players who belonged to youth basketball developmental teams (female and male) from under-12 (U12) to under-17 (U17) categories. Ankle joint dorsiflexion range of motion was evaluated with the weight-bearing lunge test through the Leg Motion system. The distance achieved was recorded in centimeters. (3) Results: 693 basketball players who met the eligibility criteria and volunteered to participate were included in the study. The mean (SD) of ankle joint dorsiflexion was 10.68 (2.44) cm and the reference values were: excessive hypomobility < 6.09 (0.54) cm; hypomobility 6.09 (0.88) cm-8.43 (0.77) cm; normal 8.44 (0.77)-13.11 (0.79) cm; hypermobility 13.11 (0.74)-15.44 (0.86) cm; and excessive hypermobility >15.44 (0.86) cm. (4) Conclusions: This study provides ankle joint dorsiflexion reference values in youth basketball players from 12 to under 17 years old.

Abstract

(1) Background: The aims of this study are to explore what beliefs children and adolescents manifest about the cause of the pain they describe, to compare whether there are differences between beliefs by age and the persistence of pain, and to relate the explanations of the cause of pain with current scientific evidence. (2) Methods: a cross-sectional qualitative study was used. The primary endpoint of the study was obtaining explanations of the cause of pain recorded by means of an open-ended question. The participants were school-age children attending a charted school in the province of Barcelona. (3) Results: The children and adolescents proposed a diverse range of explanations for the cause of pain that they reported in their responses. The most frequent explanation for the cause of pain were pathologies and injuries (45.95%), ergonomic issues (22.60%) and psychological issues (15.95%). (4) Conclusions: There is a lot of variety in the explanations that young people give about the cause of their pain in schoolchildren aged between 10 and 16 years old. There exists a high prevalence of explanations non-associated with tissue damage (ENAD) concerning the causes of pain described. It is necessary that future health prevention programs dedicated to early ages consider which beliefs about the cause of pain are the most frequent in the pediatric population. 15. Educational Needs and Resources for Teachers Working with Students with Chronic Pain: Results of a Delphi Study

Abstract

Children and adolescents spend most of their time at school. Therefore, teachers could be of help to improve the quality of life of students with chronic pain while they are at school. The aim of this study was to identify teachers' educational needs and resources to help improve the adjustment to and function in the school of students with chronic pain. A Delphi survey including two rounds was conducted. Overall, 49 needs were identified in the first round. They were related to education, training, organization/logistics, and communication with the family and the health care center. Among the most important needs, based on the importance given and consensus reached, were (1) having information about the most appropriate attitudes and responses to a student with chronic pain, (2) how to reduce absenteeism, (3) how to ease the return to school after a long absence due to his or her pain problem, and (4) how to establish effective communication with the family. The results of this study provide new important data on the educational needs and resources which teachers would like to have to help their students with chronic pain at school, which could be used to develop educative programs for teachers.

23. Reorganized Force Control in Elbow Pain Patients During Isometric Wrist Extension

Abstract

Introduction: Reorganized force control may be an important adaptation following painful traumas. In this study, force control adaptations were assessed in elbow pain patients. Increasing the contraction demand may overcome pain interference on the motor control and as such act as an internal control. It was hypothesized that elbow pain patients compared with controls would present greater change in the direction of force when increasing the demand of the motor task. Methods: Elbow pain patients (n=19) and asymptomatic participants (n=21) performed isometric wrist extensions at 5% to 70% of maximum voluntary contraction. Pressure pain thresholds were recorded at the lateral epicondyle and tibialis anterior muscle. Contraction force was recorded using a 3-directional force transducer. Participants performed contractions according to visual feedback of the task-related force intensity (main direction of wrist extension) and another set of contractions with feedback of the 3 force directions. Going from the simple to the detailed force feedback will increase the demand of the motor task. Force steadiness in all 3 dimensions and force directions were extracted. Results: Compared with controls, elbow pain patients presented lower pressure pain thresholds at both sites (P<0.05). Force steadiness was not significantly different between groups or feedback methods. The change in force direction when providing simple visual feedback in contrast with feedback of all force components at all contraction levels was greater for patients compared with controls (P<0.05). Conclusion: The larger change in force direction in pain patients implies redistribution of loads across the arm as an associated effect of pain.

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar cómo debe ser el vídeo para presentar el caso del Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas (ABP) en el contexto de la enseñanza de Fisioterapia y analizar la aceptación por parte de los alumnos de esta herramienta. Parte de una revisión bibliográfica sobre este tema, a partir de la que se elaboran dos vídeos con los que se realiza una experiencia de ABP con 60 estudiantes de primer curso. Por diversos motivos que se detallan en el trabajo, la opinión de todos los estudiantes es favorable a este uso del vídeo. The aim of this study is to design a video for presenting a Problem Based Learning (PBL) case in the context of teaching physiotherapy, and to analyze the students' acceptance of this tool. The study begins with review of the literature on the subject, after which two videos are created to carry out a PBL experiment with 60 first year students. All the students react favourably to the video for various reasons which are detailed in the study.

Objectives: To establish whether Kinesio tape (Kt) on the ankle improves joint position sense (JPS) immediately after its application and after 48 hours wearing it. Study Design: Randomized clinical trial Setting: Motion analysis laboratory Participants: Sixty-eight volunteers randomly assigned to the control (n = 33) or the intervention (n = 35) group, which received ankle Kt. Main outcome measures: JPS was assessed through the Difference of Error (DE) and the Deviation of the Target Angle (DTA). JPS was assessed before the Kt was placed, immediately after and 48 hours later, wearing the tape all this period. T-test two-sided and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare DE between groups and Chi-square test was performed to assess DTA. Results: Forty-eight hours after application of the Kt, 10° plantarflexion worsened in the intervention group and improved in the control (p = 0.041). For other positions there were no significant differences. Neutral was the most accurately reproduced position. Conclusion: Kt had no significant effect on ankle JPS in healthy individuals. Kt is not justified as a prevention technique or when improving proprioception is the rehabilitation aim. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

La present tesi pretén analitzar els efectes de l'acupuntura en persones afectades de dolor crònic generalitzat (DCG). Es tracta d'un estudi prospectiu controlat. S'han distribuït aleatòriament un total de 92 participants en dos grups: el grup Intervenció, que ha rebut un tractament d'acupuntura; i el grup control, que ha rebut acupuntura simulada. Els tractaments han estat personalitzats i els criteris de tractament es basen en l'ús dels punts Yuan i Luo. Els resultats s'han avaluat mitjançant l'Escala Analògica Visual (EVA), el Qüestionari d'Impacte de la Fibromiàlgia (FIQR), el Qüestionari Específic Medical Study Sleep Scale (MOSS) i la Patient Global Impression of Improvement Scale (PGI-I). Els resultats s'han analitzat en la 1a, 4a i 8a setmanes des de l'inici del tractament. L'estudi s'ha dut a terme d'acord amb les directrius STRICTA, que estableixen la manera correcta de procedir pel que fa a la realització d'estudis científics en el camp de la acupuntura. Els resultats obtinguts permeten concloure que l'acupuntura és capaç de disminuir el dolor, la discapacitat i les alteracions del son en les persones que pateixen DCG., La presente tesis pretende analizar los efectos de la acupuntura en personas afectadas de dolor crónico generalizado (DCG). Se trata de un estudio prospectivo controlado. Se han distribuido aleatoriamente un total de 92 participantes en dos grupos: el grupo Intervención, que ha recibido un tratamiento de acupuntura; y el grupo Control, que ha recibido acupuntura simulada. Los tratamientos han sido personalizados y los criterios de tratamiento se basan en el uso de los puntos Yuan y Luo. Los resultados se han evaluado mediante la Escala Analógica Visual (EVA), el Cuestionario de Impacto de la Fibromialgia (FIQR), el Cuestionario Especifico Medical Study Sleep Scale (MOSS) y Patient Global Impression of Improvement Scale (PGI-I). Los resultados se han analizado en la 1ª, 4ª y 8ª semanas desde el inicio del tratamiento. El estudio se ha llevado a cabo de acuerdo con las directrices STRICTA, que establecen la manera correcta de proceder en cuanto a la realización de estudios científicos en el campo de la acupuntura.Los resultados obtenidos permiten concluir que la acupuntura es capaz de disminuir el dolor, la discapacidad y las alteraciones del sueño en las personas que padecen DCG., This thesis aims to analyse the effects of acupuncture in people affected by chronic widespread pain (CWP). This is a prospective controlled study. A total of 92 participants were randomly assigned to two groups: the Intervention group, which received an acupuncture treatment; and the Control group, who received sham acupuncture. The treatments have been customized and the treatment criteria are based on the use of Yuan and Luo points. The results were evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR), the Medical Questionnaire Sleep Scale (MOSS) and the Patient Global Impression of Improvement Scale (PGI-I). The results were analysed in the 1st, 4th and 8th weeks from the start of treatment. The study has been carried out in accordance with STRICTA guidelines, which establish the correct way to proceed in the conduct of scientific studies in the field of acupuncture. The results obtained conclude that acupuncture is able to decrease pain, disability and sleep disturbances in people with CWP.
