We present a study of the stellar and baryonic Tully-Fisher relation within the redshift range of $0.6 \leq z \leq 2.5$ utilizing observations of \sfgs. This dataset, as explored in \citet{GS23}, comprises of disk-like galaxies spanning a stellar mass range of $8.89 \leq \log(M_{star} \ [\mathrm{M_\odot}]) \leq 11.5$, baryonic mass range of $9.0 \leq \log(M_{bar} [\mathrm{M_\odot}]) \leq 11.5$, and circular velocity range of $1.65 \leq \log(V_c \ [{\rm km/s}]) \leq 2.85$. Stellar masses of these objects are estimated using spectral energy distribution fitting techniques, while gas masses are determined via scaling relations. Circular velocities are directly derived from the Rotation Curves (RCs), after meticulously correcting for beam smearing and pressure support. Our analysis confirms that our sample adheres to the fundamental mass-size relations of galaxies and reflects the evolution of velocity dispersion in galaxies, in line with previous findings. This reaffirms the reliability of our photometric and kinematic parameters (i.e., $M_{star}$ and $V_c$), thereby enabling a comprehensive examination of the Tully-Fisher relation. To attain robust results, we employed a novel orthogonal likelihood fitting technique designed to minimize intrinsic scatter around the best-fit line, as required at \hz. For the STFR, we obtained a slope of $\alpha=3.03\pm 0.25$, an offset of $\beta = 3.34\pm 0.53$, and an intrinsic scatter of $\zeta_{int}=0.08$ dex. Correspondingly, the BTFR yielded $\alpha=3.21\pm 0.28$, $\beta=3.16\pm 0.61$, and $\zeta_{int}=0.09$ dex. Our findings suggest a subtle deviation in the stellar and baryonic Tully-Fisher relation with respect to local studies, which is most-likely due to the evolutionary processes governing disk formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. In this work we compute the rates and numbers of different types of stars and phenomena (supernovae, novae, white dwarfs, merging neutron stars, black holes) that contributed to the chemical composition of the Solar System. This process is called "chemical evolution". In particular, we analyse the death rates of stars of all masses, dying either quiescently or explosively. These rates and total star numbers are computed in the context of a revised version of the two-infall model for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, which reproduces fairly well the observed abundance patterns of several chemical species, the global solar metallicity, and the current gas, stellar, and total surface mass densities. We compute also the total number of stars ever born and still alive as well as the number of stars born up to the formation of the Solar System with a mass and metallicity like the Sun. This latter number will account for all the possible existing Solar Systems which can host life in the solar vicinity. We conclude that, among all the stars (from 0.8 to 100 M$_{\odot}$) born and died from the beginning up to the Solar System formation epoch, which contributed to its chemical composition, 93.00\% are represented by stars dying as single white dwarfs (without interacting significantly with a companion star) and originating in the mass range 0.8-8 M$_{\odot}$, while 5.24$\%$ are neutron stars and 0.73$\%$ are black holes, both originating from supernovae core-collapse (M > 8 M$_{\odot}$); 0.64$\%$ are Type Ia supernovae and 0.40$\%$ are nova systems, both originating from the same mass range as the white dwarfs. The number of stars similar to the Sun born from the beginning up to the Solar System formation, with metallicity in the range 12+log(Fe/H)= 7.50 $\pm$ 0.04 dex is $ \sim 31 \cdot$ 10$^{7}$, and in particular our Sun is the $\sim 2.61 \cdot$ 10$^7$-th star of this kind., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A), 11 pages, 9 figures

The design of low-profile linear microstrip arrays with wide-band spatial filtering capabilities is dealt with. An innovative architecture, leveraging the angular selectivity of offset stacked patch (OSP) radiators, is proposed to implement phased arrays (PAs) with inter-element spacing larger than half-wavelength that feature remarkable grating lobes (GLs) suppression properties and an enhanced gain within a non-negligible down-looking scanning angular range. The PA layout is then obtained by optimizing the optimal micro-scale geometrical descriptors of the radiating elements so that the macro-scale electromagnetic (EM) features of the arising finite-size PA fulfill the user-defined requirements. A set of numerical test cases, concerned with a variation of the array size and its polarization, is presented to assess the capabilities, the flexibility, and the potentialities of the proposed spatial filtering technique (SFT) also in comparison with competitive state-of-the-art alternatives. The performance of a printed circuit board (PCB)-manufactured prototype are experimentally assessed, as well.

Utilizing the well-established Radial Tully-Fisher (RTF) relation observed in a `large' (843) sample of local galaxies, we report the maximum allowed variance in the Hubble parameter, $H_0$. We estimate the total intrinsic scatter in the magnitude of the RTF relation(s) implementing a cosmological model-independent cosmographic expansion. We find that the maximum allowed local variation in our baseline analysis, using 4 RTF relations in the galaxy sample is $\Delta H_0/H_0 \lesssim 3 \%$ at a $95\%$ C.L. significance. Which is implied form a constraint of $\Delta H_0/H_0 = 0.54^{+1.32}_{-1.37} \%$ estimated at $D_{\rm{L}}\sim 10\, [\rm{Mpc}]$. Using only one `best-constrained' radial bin we report a conservative $95\%$ C.L. limit of $\Delta H_0/H_0 \lesssim 4 \%$. Through our estimate of maximum variation, we propose a novel method to validate several late-time/local modifications put forth to alleviate the $H_0$ tension. We find that within the range of the current galaxy sample redshift distribution $10 \, [\rm{Mpc}] \le D_{\rm{L}} \le 140\, [\rm{Mpc}]$, it is highly unlikely to obtain a variation of $\Delta H_0/H_0 \sim 9\%$, necessary to alleviate the $H_0$-tension. However, we also elaborate on the possible alternative inferences when the innermost radial bin is included in the analysis. Alongside the primary analysis of fitting the individual RTF relations independently, we propose and perform a joint analysis of the RTF relations useful to create a pseudo-standardizable sample of galaxies. We also test for the spatial variation of $H_0$, finding that the current samples' galaxies distributed only in the southern hemisphere support the null hypothesis of isotropy, within the allowed noise levels., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

In the framework of the "Smart ElectroMagnetic Environment" (SEME), an innovative strategy leveraging Equivalence Source concepts is introduced for enhancing the performance of large-scale outdoor wireless communication systems. The proposed Opportunistic Sources Synthesis (OSS) approach is aimed at unconventionally synthesizing the primary source (i.e., the base transceiver station (BTS) antenna array), so that the complex scattering phenomena induced in the surrounding scatterers are profitably exploited to enhance the received power within user-defined regions of interest (RoIs). To yield a computationally feasible synthesis process, an innovative "Embedded-plus-Environment Patterns" (EPEPs) method is introduced. A set of representative numerical examples, concerned with realistic large-scale outdoor scenarios, is presented to assess the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed optimization-driven approach for a realistic SEME implementation.

In this paper, an innovative microwave imaging (MI) approach for breast tumor diagnosis is proposed that employs a differential formulation of the inverse scattering problem (ISP) at hand to exploit arbitrary-fidelity priors on the inhomogeneous reference/healthy tissues. The quantitative imaging of the unknown tumor is then rephrased into a global optimization problem, which is efficiently solved with an ad-hoc physics-driven artificial intelligence (AI) strategy inspired by the concepts and guidelines of the System-by-Design (SbD) paradigm. The effectiveness, the robustness, the reliability, and the efficiency of the proposed method are assessed against both synthetic and experimental data.

The statistical distribution and evolution of key properties (e.g. accretion rate, mass, or spin) of active galactic nuclei (AGN), remain an open debate in astrophysics. The ESA Euclid space mission, launched on July 1st 2023, promises a breakthrough in this field. We create detailed mock catalogues of AGN spectra, from the rest-frame near-infrared down to the ultraviolet, including emission lines, to simulate what Euclid will observe for both obscured (type 2) and unobscured (type 1) AGN. We concentrate on the red grisms of the NISP instrument, which will be used for the wide-field survey, opening a new window for spectroscopic AGN studies in the near-infrared. We quantify the efficiency in the redshift determination as well as in retrieving the emission line flux of the H$\alpha$+[NII] complex as Euclid is mainly focused on this emission line as it is expected to be the brightest one in the probed redshift range. Spectroscopic redshifts are measured for 83% of the simulated AGN in the interval where the H$\alpha$+[NII] is visible (0.892x10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, encompassing the peak of AGN activity at $z\simeq 1-1.5$) within the spectral coverage of the red grism. Outside this redshift range, the measurement efficiency decreases significantly. Overall, a spectroscopic redshift is correctly determined for ~90% of type 2 AGN down to an emission line flux of $3x10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, and for type 1 AGN down to $8.5x10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. Recovered black hole mass values show a small offset with respect to the input values ~10%, but the agreement is good overall. With such a high spectroscopic coverage at z<2, we will be able to measure AGN demography, scaling relations, and clustering from the epoch of the peak of AGN activity down to the present-day Universe for hundreds of thousand AGN with homogeneous spectroscopic information., Comment: 29 pages, 23 figures. We present an observational study of the dark matter fraction in star-forming disk-like galaxies up to redshift $z \sim 2.5$, selected from publicly available integral field spectroscropic surveys: KMOS$^{\rm 3D}$, KGES, and KROSS. To model the $H\alpha$ kinematics of these galaxies, we employ 3D forward-modelling, which incorporates beam-smearing and inclination corrections, and yields rotation curves. Subsequently, these rotation curves are corrected for gas pressure gradients, resulting in circular velocity curves or `intrinsic' rotation curves. Our final sample comprises of 263 rotationally supported main sequence star-forming galaxies with redshifts ranging from $0.6 \leq z < 2.5$. We estimate the dark matter fraction of these galaxies by subtracting the baryonic mass from the total mass, where the total mass is derived from the intrinsic rotation curves. We provide novel observational evidence, suggesting that at a fixed redshift, the dark matter fraction gradually increases with radius such that the outskirts of galaxies are dark matter dominated, similarly to local star-forming disk galaxies. This observed dark matter fraction exhibits a decreasing trend with increasing redshift and, on average, the fraction within the effective radius (upto outskirts) remains above 50\%, similar to locals. We investigate the relationships between dark matter, baryon surface density, and circular velocity of galaxies. We observe that low stellar mass galaxies, with $\log(M_{\rm star}\ [\mathrm{M_\odot}]) \leq 10.0$, undergo a higher degree of evolution, which may be attributed to the hierarchical merging of galaxies. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work presents the first large-scale indoor experimental assessment of an implementation of the emerging Smart ElectroMagnetic Environment (SEME) paradigm, which is based on the deployment of static-passive EM skins (SP-EMSs) to enhance the coverage in a 5 [GHz] Wi-Fi network. Unlike standard (laboratory-based) validations reported in the state-of-the-art (SoA) literature, the scenario at hand mimics a realistic indoor environment to replicate as close as possible the user experience when using commodity devices. Representative results from the experimental field trials are re-ported to confirm the performance predictions arising from the numerical studies and the tolerance analyses carried out with a commercial ray-tracing (RT) tool. Besides experimentally validating the SEME idea, this study is also aimed at (roughly) quantifying the economic advantage of a SEME implementation, relying on simple-manufacturing/low-cost field manipulating devices without any additional biasing circuitry, with respect to standard approaches that imply the densification of the active radiating sources.

[abridged] We explore the possibility that the dark matter (DM) component in galaxies may originate fractional gravity. In such a framework, the standard law of inertia continues to hold, but the gravitational potential associated to a given DM density distribution is determined by a modified Poisson equation including fractional derivatives (i.e., derivatives of non-integer type), that are meant to describe non-local effects. We derive analytically the expression of the potential that in fractional gravity corresponds to various spherically symmetric density profiles, including the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) distribution that is usually exploited to describe virialized halos of collisionless DM as extracted from $N-$body cosmological simulations. We show that in fractional gravity the dynamics of a test particle moving in a cuspy NFW density distribution is substantially altered with respect to the Newtonian case (i.e., basing on the standard Poisson equation), mirroring what in Newtonian gravity would instead be sourced by a density profile with an inner core. We test the fractional gravity framework on galactic scales, showing that: (i) it can provide accurate fits to the stacked rotation curves of galaxies with different properties; (ii) it can reproduce to reasonable accuracy the observed shape and scatter of the radial acceleration relation (RAR); (iii) it can properly account for the universal surface density and the core radius vs. disk scale-length scaling relations. We present the results of dark matter (DM) searches in a sample of 31 dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies within the field of view of the HAWC Observatory. dIrr galaxies are DM dominated objects, which astrophysical gamma-ray emission is estimated to be negligible with respect to the secondary gamma-ray flux expected by annihilation or decay of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). While we do not see any statistically significant DM signal in dIrr galaxies, we present the exclusion limits ($95\%~\text{C.L.}$) for annihilation cross-section and decay lifetime for WIMP candidates with masses between $1$ and $100~\text{TeV}$. Exclusion limits from dIrr galaxies are relevant and complementary to benchmark dwarf Spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. In fact, dIrr galaxies are targets kinematically different from benchmark dSph, preserving the footprints of different evolution histories. We compare the limits from dIrr galaxies to those from ultrafaint and classical dSph galaxies previously observed with HAWC. We find that the contraints are comparable to the limits from classical dSph galaxies and $\thicksim2$ orders of magnitude weaker than the ultrafaint dSph limits., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables

Practical applications of microwave imaging often require the solution of inverse scattering problems with inhomogeneous backgrounds. Towards this end, a novel inversion strategy, which combines the multi-scaling (MS) regularization scheme and the Difference Contraction Integral Equation (DCIE) formulation, is proposed. Such an integrated approach mitigates the non-linearity and the ill-posedness of the problem to obtain reliable high-resolution reconstructions of the unknown scattering profiles. The arising algorithmic implementation, denoted as MS-DCIE, does not require the computation of the Green's function of the inhomogeneous background, thus it provides an efficient and effective way to deal with complex scenarios. The performance of the MS-DCIE are assessed by means of numerical and experimental tests, in comparison with competitive state-of-the-art inversion strategies, as well.

Cosmic Probes of Fundamental Physics take two primary forms: Very high energy particles (cosmic rays, neutrinos, and gamma rays) and gravitational waves. Already today, these probes give access to fundamental physics not available by any other means, helping elucidate the underlying theory that completes the Standard Model. The last decade has witnessed a revolution of exciting discoveries such as the detection of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves. Perfect Electric Conductors (PECs) are imaged integrating the subspace-based optimizationmethod (SOM) within the iterative multi-scaling scheme (IMSA). Without a-priori information on the number or/and the locations of the scatterers and modelling their EM scattering interactions with a (known) probing source in terms of surface electric field integral equations, a segment-based representation of PECs is retrieved from the scattered field samples. The proposed IMSA-SOM inversion method is validated against both synthetic and experimental data by assessing the reconstruction accuracy, the robustness to the noise, and the computational efficiency with some comparisons, as well.

The ability of passive flat patterned electromagnetic skins (EMSs) to overcome the asymptotic limit of the total path attenuation (TPA) of flat metallic reflectors of arbitrary size in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) specular wireless links is assessed. Closed-form expressions for the achievable TPA in EMS-powered NLOS links as well as the condition on the panel size of EMS-screens to improve the performance of flat passive conductive screens (PCSs) with the same aperture are derived and numerically validated by considering different incidence angles, screen apertures, transmitter/receiver distances, antenna gains, meta-atom geometries, and carrier frequencies.

An innovative millimeter-wave (mm-wave) microstrip edge-fed antenna (EFA) for 77 GHz automotive radars is proposed. The radiator contour is modeled with a sinusoidal spline-shaped (SS) profile characterized by a reduced number of geometrical descriptors, but still able to guarantee a high flexibility in the modeling for fulfilling challenging user-defined requirements. The SS-EFA descriptors are effectively and efficiently optimized with a customized implementation of the System-by-Design (SbD) paradigm. The synthesized EFA layout, integrated within a linear arrangement of identical replicas to account for the integration into the real radar system, exhibits suitable impedance matching, isolation, polarization purity, and stability of the beam shaping/pointing within the target band [76:78][GHz]. The experimental assessment, carried out with a Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) system on a printed circuit board (PCB)-manufactured prototype, assess the reliability of the outcomes from the full-wave (FW) simulations as well as the suitability of the synthesized SS-EFA for automotive radars.

A generalized formulation is derived for the analysis of the field manipulation properties of electromagnetic skins (EMSs) in the working regimes of interest for wireless communications. Based on such a theoretical framework, a unified method for the design of anomalous-reflecting and focusing EMSs is presented. Representative results, from a wide set of numerical experiments, are reported and validated with full-wave HFSS simulations to give the interested readers some insights on the accuracy, the effectiveness, and the computational efficiency of the proposed analysis/synthesis tools.

The very careful Event Horizon Telescope estimate of the mass of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Giant CD galaxy M87, allied with recent high quality photometric and spectroscopic measurements, yields a proper dark/luminous mass decomposition from the galaxy center to its virial radius. That provides us with decisive information on crucial cosmological and astrophysical issues. The dark and the standard matter distributions in a wide first time detected galaxy region under the supermassive black hole gravitational control. The well known supermassive black hole mass vs stellar dispersion velocity relationship at the highest galaxy masses implies an exotic growth of the former. This may be the first case in which one can argue that the supermassive black hole mass growth was also contributed by the Dark Matter component. A huge dark matter halo core in a galaxy with inefficient baryonic feedback is present and consequently constrains the nature of the dark halo particles. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. A new method for synthesizing Single-Bit Reconfigurable Passive Electromagnetic Skins (1RP-EMSs) featuring advanced beam shaping capabilities is proposed. By using single-bit unit cells, the multi-scale problem of controlling 1RP-EMSs is formulated as a two-phase process. First, the macro-scale synthesis of the discrete surface current that radiates the electromagnetic (EM) field fitting user-designed requirements is performed by means of an innovative quantized version of the iterative projection method (QIPM). Successively, the meta-atom states of the 1RP-EMS are optimized with a customized implementation of the System-by-Design paradigm to yield a 1RP-EMS that supports such a feasible reference current. A representative set of numerical results is reported to assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach in designing and controlling single-bit meta-atom RP-EMSs that enable complex wave manipulations.

The computationally-efficient solution of multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs) arising in the design of modern electromagnetic (EM) microwave devices is addressed. Towards this end, a novel System-by-Design (SbD) method is developed to effectively explore the solution space and to provide the decision maker with a set of optimal trade-off solutions minimizing multiple and (generally) contrasting objectives. The proposed MO-SbD method proves a high computational efficiency, with a remarkable time saving with respect to a competitive state-of-the-art MOP solution strategy, thanks to the "smart" integration of evolutionary-inspired concepts and operators with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques. Representative numerical results are reported to provide the interested users with useful insights and guidelines on the proposed optimization method as well as to assess its effectiveness in designing mm-wave automotive radar antennas.

The optimal planning of electromagnetic skins (EMSs) installed on the building facades to enhance the received signal strength, thus the wireless coverage and/or the quality-of-service (QoS) in large-scale urban areas, is addressed. More specifically, a novel instance of the System-by-Design (SbD) paradigm is proposed towards the implementation of a smart electromagnetic environment (SEME) where low-cost passive static reflective skins are deployed to enhance the level of the power received within selected regions-of-interest (RoIs). Thanks to the ad-hoc customization of the SbD functional blocks, which includes the exploitation of a digital twin (DT) for the accurate yet fast assessment of the wireless coverage condition, effective solutions are yielded. Numerical results, dealing with real-world test-beds, are shown to assess the capabilities, the potentialities, and the current limitations of the proposed EMSs planning strategy.

The design of modular, passive, and static artificial metasurfaces to be used as electromagnetic skins (EMSs) of buildings for improving the coverage in urban millimeter-wave communication scenarios is addressed. Towards this end, an ad-hoc design strategy is presented to determine optimal trade-off implementative solutions that assure a suitable coverage of the areas of interest, where the signal from the base station is too weak, with the minimum complexity. More specifically, the admissible surface in the building facade is first partitioned into tiles, which are the minimum-size elements of the artificial coating (i.e., the building block of an EMS). Then, the search for the optimal EMS layout (i.e., the minimum number and the positions of the tiles to be installed) is carried out with a binary multi-objective optimization method. Representative numerical results are reported and discussed to point out the features and the potentialities of the EMS solution in the smart electromagnetic environment (SEME) as well as the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

An innovative process for the design of static passive smart skins (SPSSs) is proposed to take into account, within the synthesis, the electromagnetic (EM) interactions due to their finite (macro-level) size and aperiodic (micro-scale) layouts. Such an approach leverages on the combination of an inverse source (IS) formulation, to define the SPSS surface currents, and of an instance of the System-by-Design paradigm, to synthesize the unit cell (UC) descriptors suitable for supporting these currents. As for this latter step, an enhanced Artificial Intelligence (IA)-based digital twin (DT) is built to efficiently and reliably predict the relationships among the UCs and the non-uniform coupling effects arising when the UCs are irregularly assembled to build the corresponding SPSS. Towards this end and unlike state-of-the-art approaches, an aperiodic finite small-scale model of the SPSS is derived to generate the training database for the DT implementation. A set of representative numerical experiments, dealing with different radiation objectives and smart skin apertures, is reported to assess the reliability of the conceived design process and to illustrate the radiation features of the resulting layouts, validated with accurate full-wave simulations, as well.

We investigate the dark matter halos of 256 star-forming disc-like galaxies at $z\sim 1$ using the KMOS redshift one spectroscopic survey (KROSS). This sample covers the redshifts $0.6 \leq z \leq 1.04$, effective radii $0.69 \leq R_e [\mathrm{kpc}] \leq 7.76$, and total stellar masses $8.7 \leq log(M_{\mathrm{star}} \ [\mathrm{M_\odot}]) \leq 11.32$. We present a mass modelling approach to study the rotation curves of these galaxies, which allow us to dynamically calculate the physical properties associated with the baryons and the dark matter halo. For the former we assume a Freeman disc, while for the latter we employ the NFW and the Burkert halo profiles, separately. At the end, we compare the results of both cases with state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations (EAGLE, TNG100 and TNG50). We find that the {\em cored} dark matter halo emerged as the dominant quantity from a radius 1-3 times the effective radius. Its fraction to the total mass is in good agreement with the outcome of hydrodynamical galaxy simulations. Remarkably, we found that the dark matter core of $z\sim 1$ star-forming galaxies are smaller and denser than their local counterparts. We conclude that dark matter halos have gradually expanded over the past 6.5 Gyrs. That is, observations are capable of capturing the dark matter response to the baryonic processes (e.g. feedbacks), and thus giving us the first empirical evidence of {\em gravitational potential fluctuations} in the inner region of galaxies, which can be verified with deep surveys and future missions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We analyze 11 years of Fermi-LAT data corresponding to the sky regions of 7 dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies. DIrrs are dark matter (DM) dominated systems, proposed as interesting targets for the indirect search of DM with gamma rays. The galaxies represent interesting cases with a strong disagreement between the density profiles (core vs. cusp) inferred from observations and numerical simulations. In this work, we addressed the problem by considering two different DM profiles, based on both the fit to the rotation curve (in this case a Burkert cored profile) and results from N-body cosmological simulations (i.e., NFW cuspy profile). We also include halo substructures in our analysis, which is expected to boost the DM signal a factor of ten in halos such as those of dIrrs. For each DM model and dIrr, we create a spatial template of the expected DM-induced gamma-ray signal to be used in the analysis of Fermi-LAT data. No significant emission is detected from any of the targets in our sample. Thus, we compute upper limits on the DM annihilation cross-section versus mass parameter space. Among the 7 dIrrs, we find IC10 and NGC6822 to yield the most stringent individual constraints, independently of the adopted DM profile. We also produce combined DM limits for all objects in the sample, which turn out to be dominated by IC10 for all DM models and annihilation channels, i.e. $b\bar{b}$, $\tau^+\tau^-$ and $W^+W^-$. The strongest constraints are obtained for $b\bar{b}$ and are at the level of $\langle\sigma v \rangle \sim 7 \times 10^{-26}\text{cm}^{3}\text{s}^{-1}$ at $m_\chi\sim 6$ GeV. The aim of this communication is to investigate and demonstrate the possibility to overcome the fundamental limitations of mantle cloaking for antennas by exploiting nonlinear metasurfaces. First, we recap and give additional physical insights about the fundamental bounds that apply to the electric properties of an antenna that is made invisible at its own resonance frequency. Then, an innovative strategy is proposed to circumvent these limits through the introduction of nonlinear elements that are able to dynamically transform the geometry of the cloaking metasurface depending on the power level of the impinging field. Different nonlinear designs are discussed, and their effectiveness is assessed through the relevant benchmark example of a half-wavelength dipole antenna able to efficiently transmit high-power signals while being invisible to low-power ones. In addition, the capability of such nonlinear mantle cloaks to enable the shaping of the radiation pattern of an antenna array depending on the power level of the received/transmitted signal is demonstrated. These innovative cloaking devices may find applications in different radiating systems enabling unprecedented functionalities.

An innovative inverse scattering (IS) method is proposed for the quantitative imaging of pixel-sparse scatterers buried within a lossy half-space. On the one hand, such an approach leverages on the wide-band nature of ground penetrating radar (GPR) data by jointly processing the multi-frequency (MF) spectral components of the collected radargrams. On the other hand, it enforces sparsity priors on the problem unknowns to yield regularized solutions of the fully non-linear scattering equations. Towards this end, a multi-task Bayesian Compressive Sensing (MT-BCS) methodology is adopted and suitably customized to take full advantage of the available frequency diversity and of the a-priori information on the class of imaged targets. Representative results are reported to assess the proposed MF-MT-BCS strategy also in comparison with competitive state-of-the-art alternatives.

The System-by-Design (SbD) is an emerging engineering framework for the optimization-driven design of complex electromagnetic (EM) devices and systems. More specifically, the computational complexity of the design problem at hand is addressed by means of a suitable selection and integration of functional blocks comprising problem-dependent and computationally-efficient modeling and analysis tools as well as reliable prediction and optimization strategies. Thanks to the suitable re-formulation of the problem at hand as an optimization one, the profitable minimum-size coding of the degrees-of-freedom (DoFs), the "smart" replacement of expensive full-wave (FW) simulators with proper surrogate models (SMs), which yield fast yet accurate predictions starting from minimum size/reduced CPU-costs training sets, a favorable "environment" for an optimal exploitation of the features of global optimization tools in sampling wide/complex/nonlinear solution spaces is built. This research summary is then aimed at (i) providing a comprehensive description of the SbD framework and of its pillar concepts and strategies, (ii) giving useful guidelines for its successful customization and application to different EM design problems characterized by different levels of computational complexity, (iii) envisaging future trends and advances in this fascinating and high-interest (because of its relevant and topical industrial and commercial implications) topic. Representative benchmarks concerned with the synthesis of complex EM systems are presented to highlight advantages and potentialities as well as current limitations of the SbD paradigm.

A novel probabilistic sparsity-promoting method for robust near-field (NF) antenna characterization is proposed. It leverages on the measurements-by-design (MebD) paradigm and it exploits some a-priori information on the antenna under test (AUT) to generate an over-complete representation basis. Accordingly, the problem at hand is reformulated in a compressive sensing (CS) framework as the retrieval of a maximally-sparse distribution (with respect to the overcomplete basis) from a reduced set of measured data and then it is solved by means of a Bayesian strategy. Representative numerical results are presented to, also comparatively, assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing the "burden/cost" of the acquisition process as well as to mitigate (possible) truncation errors when dealing with space-constrained probing systems., Comment: Submitted to IEEE

The computationally-efficient solution of fully non-linear microwave inverse scattering problems (ISPs) is addressed. An innovative System-by-Design (SbD) based method is proposed to enable, for the first time to the best of the authors knowledge, an effective, robust, and time-efficient exploitation of an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to perform the global minimization of the data-mismatch cost function. According to the SbD paradigm as suitably applied to ISPs, the proposed approach founds on (i) a smart re-formulation of the ISP based on the definition of a minimum-dimensionality and representative set of degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) and on (ii) the artificial-intelligence (AI)-driven integration of a customized global search technique with a digital twin (DT) predictor based on the Gaussian Process (GP) theory. Representative numerical and experimental results are provided to assess the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed approach also in comparison with competitive state-of-the-art inversion techniques.

An innovative approach for the synthesis of inexpensive holographic smart electromagnetic (EM) skins with advanced beamforming features is proposed. The complex multiscale smart skin design is formulated within the Generalized Sheet Transition Condition (GSTC) framework as a combination of a mask-constrained isophoric inverse source problem and a micro-scale susceptibility dyadic optimization. The solution strategy integrates a local search procedure based on the iterative projection technique (IPT) and a System-by-Design (SbD)-based optimization loop for the identification of optimal metasurface descriptors matching the desired surface currents. The performance and the efficiency of the proposed approach are assessed in a set of representative test cases concerned with different smart skin apertures and target pattern masks.
