12. Polymerization kinetics of a fluorinated monomer under confinement in AAO nanocavities

Abstract

In this work we show for the first time the kinetic study of the radical polymerization of a fluorinated acrylic monomer (MFA) in the confinement of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanocavities. AAO templates with different pore sizes were used as nanoreactors and polymerization kinetics were studied in situ by Raman spectroscopy and in bulk by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Afterwards, a mathematical model that describes the effect of nanoconfinement on the polymerization kinetics was derived. Furthermore, similar nanostructures were observed by SEM when in bulk polymerized PFA was infiltrated into the AAO nanocavities. Superhydrophobic surfaces were achieved with the water contact angle of 159°, much higher than its analogous non-nanostructured PFA, 114°. The >lotus effect> was observed in the superhydrophobic surface which has a low sliding angle of 8°.

Abstract

Intramolecular chain transfer topolymer and subsequent propagationof tertiary radicals cause extensive branching in radical polymerizationof acrylic monomers. Studies in the literature have shown that undercontrolled radical polymerization conditions the extent of branchingis significantly reduced. There are two competing theories to explainthis effect. In one, the cause of reduced branching is attributedto a reduction in the number of backbiting events, and in the otherthat has been specifically applied to atom-transfer radical polymerization(ATRP), the cause is due to trapping of the tertiary radical by afast deactivation step. In this article we show that trapping of thetertiary radical is not the cause for the reduction in branching fraction.This is shown by the absence of the corresponding patched midchainbromide structure as revealed by quantitative 13C NMR andby the ability to chain extend from a poly(butyl acrylate-co-butyl 2-bromoacrylate) copolymer by ATRP. Abstract

This paper describes a new strategy to obtain PEDOT/Au-nanorods nanocomposites with different PEDOT: Au ratio. A polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) was used as stabilizer during the chemical synthesis of PEDOT dispersions. PEDOT/Au-nanorods dispersions in organic media were obtained. Electrochemical characterization of PEDOT/Au-nanorods nanocomposites revealed that the addition of Au nanorods modified the electroactivity of the conducting films by reducing the oxidation potential from +0.33 to +0.23 V (versus Ag/AgCl). Optical contrast (Δ T%) of the films decreased from 17% for neat PEDOT films to 8% for PEDOT/Au-nanorods nanocomposites films (3:1 (v/v)) while switching times (from 1 to 4 sec) were similar to neat PEDOT. Conductivity of the films increased from 0.027 S/cm for neat PEDOT to 0.691 S/cm for PEDOT/Au-nanorods nanocomposites. Nanoscale morphology and contact potential of PEDOT/Au-nanorods nanocomposites were investigated in detail by Scanning Force Microscopy. Electrical measurements show a clear contact potential difference between the ITO substrate and the PEDOT/Au-nanorods film. Abstract

Organic electronics requires the development of reproducible and highly conductive thin films. The arrangement of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) with fullerene C60 leads to products with the combined properties of both species that are excellent candidates for these applications. However, very little has been studied about the effect of doping PEDOT with C60, and thus there is a lack of information regarding the morphology, electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the resulting films. Herein, simultaneous electrodeposition of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with fullerene C60 was carried out via cyclic voltammetry in the range from 0.0V to +1.5V (vs Ag/AgCl) in a three-compartment cell. ITO coated on PET was used as both working and counter electrodes. The fullerene presence within the films was confirmed with MALDI and TGA (27.5% of fullerene content). The cyclic voltamograms showed that the C60-doped film has a higher oxidation potential, what was attributed to the electron affinity of the fullerene cage. Furthermore, the spectroelectrochemical and electrochromic analyses showed that the PEDOT/C60 films present a dark violet coloration in the reduced state, which differs from the usual dark blue of the PEDOT polymer. Finally, the morphology was analyzed using AFM and SEM, and pillar structure of broccoli-like particles was observed for both films. However, the fullerene doping generated smaller polymer-based particles, thus forming a denser structure with higher surface area, suggesting the use of the cages as nucleation points for the polymerization

Bridging pyrrole and selenophene chemistries: Molecular assemblies have been developed that allow scrutiny of the electronic communication between pyrrole and selenophene nuclei. Divergent syntheses of 2-(selenophen-2-yl)pyrroles and their N-vinyl derivatives from available 2-acylselenophenes and acetylenes in a one-pot procedure have been devised (see scheme), which provide access to these exotic heterocyclic ensembles.The divergent syntheses of 2-(selenophen-2-yl)pyrroles and their N-vinyl derivatives from available 2-acylselenophenes and acetylenes in a one-pot procedure make these exotic heterocyclic ensembles accessible. Now we face a potentially vast area for exploration with a great diversity of far-reaching consequences including conducting electrochromic polymers with repeating of pyrrole and selenophene units (emerging rivalry for polypyrroles and polyselenophenes), the synthesis of functionalized pyrrole-selenophene assembles for advanced materials, biochemistry and medicine, exciting models for theory of polymer conductivity.
