Climate change, electrification to decarbonize the building sector, and the rise of renewable energy sources have made reducing the peak demand even more important than solely reducing the overall energy use. Solar radiation can have a significant impact on the energy use of buildings. However, previous studies on solar absorption in building envelopes have focused on cool roofs. Less effort has been made to evaluate the impact of solar radiation on heat loss and gain on walls. This paper summarizes a preliminary study to estimate the magnitude of the benefit low solar absorptance surfaces have on reducing peak demand and focuses on simulating a residential building with two types of U.S. code-compliant wall structures, a standard lightweight wall assembly, and a thermally massive mass timber wall, to evaluate the impact of the solar absorption coefficient of the surfaces on the heating and cooling energy use and peak demand. This effort aimed to identify whether a more comprehensive study should be undertaken to develop further the calculation tools previously developed for estimating the energy benefits for roofing systems in the U.S. by adding a similar tool for wall assemblies. Reducing the solar absorption coefficient from 0.9 to 0.3 resulted in up to 46% lower cooling demand and a 70% increase in heating demand depending on the climate. Peak demand reductions for heating and cooling energy were similar to the reduction in heating or cooling energy use. However, the annual energy use changed up to only 12% as lowering the solar absorption coefficient reduces cooling demand but increases heating demand. Whether the total impact overall is harmful or beneficial depends on the climate and type of structure. Additionally, a cool roof calculator was used to estimate the impact of solar radiation on roofs. The learning from this study is that the exterior color and the solar absorption coefficient should be chosen based on the climate to positively impact the energy use profile and peak demand.

During the service life of buildings, natural ageing of materials due to different chemical, physical, and biological processes can take place. Biodeterioration is important critical factor for durability and usage of different material. Level and duration of moisture stress connected with temperature are the most critical factors for the durability and life time of building materials. For mould development, the minimum (critical) ambient humidity requirement is shown to be between RH 80 and 95 % depending on other factors like ambient temperature, exposure time, quality and surface conditions of building materials. These factors are studied and modelled at VTT Building and Transport. The risk of mould growth in the model is presented as a mould growth index reflecting the amount of mould mycelium on the surface of materials. The index makes it possible to analyse the critical conditions needed for the start of growth, but it is also a tool to measure the progress of mould growth in different conditions and structures. Numerical simulation makes it possible to evaluate the risk and development of mould growth on the surface of wooden material in different structures. For decay development and serious problems to achieved in the buildings, moisture content combined with materials properties, temperature conditions and time are the most important factors. The moisture content for decay development is higher than that for mould growth. The decay development model is based on the mass loss caused by decay fungus in the wood material and the model will give a tool to analyse the decay risk and time needed for different decay rate in different humidity and temperature conditions. In this paper the requirements to numerically simulate mould growth and decay development will be studied. Some analysis about the risks of mould growth in applications with different materials and moisture load conditions are presented.

With the current enhancements moisture engineering analysis of building envelope structures becomes acritical design element. Building envelopes design is often modeled using advanced hygrothermal models and customized for particular interior and exterior environmental loads. This is always conducted by assuming interior environmental conditions that are decoupled by the contributions of the envelope itself. This paper presents the results of whole building hygrothermal simulations, its effects on the indoor airconditions and on the building envelope. The hygrothermal performance of two different rooms with the same thermal and moisture loads is presented. The results show that materials with hygroscopic capacity have the ability to improve the performance of building envelope structures even to such level that condensation and mold growth conditions are eliminated. A state of the art hygrothermal modeling analysis is used to quantitatively assess the performance of both hygroscopic capacity and indoor inhabitant moisture generation.

The hygroscopic structures can improve the comfort of indoor air by buffering the changes of relative humidity. Part of the indoor air moisture load can be absorbed in hygroscopic structures or other hygroscopic mass, which reduces the relative humidity peaks during short period (daily) loads. The main interest is in the moisture transfer between the indoor air and the hygroscopic structures (or mass) and what is the effective moisture capacity of the structure in the typical range of the diurnal humidity variation. In order to study this effect, a test method and device have been developed. This paper presents the test method and device and studies the determination of the moisture capacity using structures and material layers that are typically used or possible to be in contact with the indoor air.

Hygroscopic materials and structures may have a significant effect on the relative humidity level and also on the comfort of the indoor air. This moisture buffering effect depends on the moisture loads, air change rate, outdoor air conditions and the moisture transfer between structures and the indoor air. A method to experimentally determine the moisture buffering effect of structures is presented and studied. The method is based on diurnal cycles with two relative humidity levels: upper level corresponding to occupation period and lower level corresponding to unoccupied period. The transient moisture transfer between the studied building component and the air is measured by weighing and the representative characteristics for the instantaneous and overall moisture buffering effect can be solved. The results show how much hygroscopic materials can absorb moisture from indoor air during moisture load periods and transfer it back to the indoor air during low humidity periods.

Työssä käsitellään homeen kasvun numeerista mallintamista rakenteissa, vaatimuksia laskennalliselle tarkastelulle ja olemassa olevan tiedon kattavuutta. Esitetään esimerkkitapauksia homeen kasvun arvioinnista valituilla rakenteilla ja kosteuskuormituksilla.

Rakenteiden suurimmat rakenteiden kosteusriskit liittyvät ulkopuolisen kosteuden tunkeutumiseen rakenteen sisään ja rakenteen rajalliseen kuivumiskykyyn verrattuna mahdollisiin kosteuskuormiin rakentamisen tai käytön aikana. Rakenteiden kuivumiskyvyn kokeellinen määritysmenetelmä ja siihen liittyvä laitteisto tuotteistettiin rakenteiden ja niiden tuulensuojakerrosten kuivumistilanteen aikaisten kosteudensiirto-ominaisuuksien tutkimus- ja testauskäyttöön soveltuvaksi. Koelaitteistolla voidaan tutkia ja vertailla yhtä aikaa 20 rinnakkaista rakennetta tyypillistä kuivumistilannetta vastaavissa oloissa. Menetelmällä voidaan määrittää mm. kosteuden tiivistymisen ja jäätymisen vaikutus tuulensuojan kykyyn läpäistä vesihöyryn diffuusiota. Rakenteisiin asetetun alkukosteuden kuivumista seurataan ja tuloksena saadaan tutkittujen rakenteiden kuivumiskyky tarkasteluoloissa ja lisäksi voidaan määrittää tuulensuojakerroksen vesihöyryn tehollinen läpäisevyys kuivumistilanteessa. Sadeveden tunkeutumisriskin määritystä kokeiltiin laitteistolla, joka normaalin sadekoelaitteistosta poiketen tuottaa tuulen paineen tutkittavan rakenteen ulkopinnalle, eikä vain paine-eroa rakenteen yli. Menetelmän etuna on ulkoverhouksen sateenpitävyyden testaaminen mahdollisimman hyvin todellisia tuulen tuottamia painesuhteita vastaavissa oloissa, jolloin paikallisen painegradientin vaikutus rakennekerroksen tai -detaljin sateenpitävyyteen tulee otettua huomioon. Hyvä kuivumiskyky ja sadeveden tunkeutumisen estäminen parantavat rakenteen vikasietoisuutta ja kosteusriskien hallintaa. Jos rakenteen uloimman kerroksen diffuusiovastus on suuri, voidaan rakenteen kuivumiskykyä olennaisesti parantaa rajoitetulla tuuletuksella tämän kerroksen läpi. Suhteellisen pienikin tuuletusilmavirtaus kasvattaa tällaisen rakenteen kuivumiskykyä huomattavasti ilman, että sen lämpötekninen toiminta heikkenee.

Use of hygroscopic wooden material at the inside surface of the room structures has a buffering effect on the relative humidity changes of the indoor air, which has a positive effect on the comfort and air quality of the room.

Test method to study the drying efficiency of structures under realistic conditions is presented and studied. Results used to update material property information needed in numerical simulations.

Tässä julkaisussa esitetään julkisivujen ja katteiden käyttöiän ennakoinnin suositukset standardiin ISO 15686-1 perustuen. Julkaisu kattaa betonista, muuraustuotteista, puusta ja teräsohutlevystä tehdyt julkisivut sekä bitumikermi-, teräsohutlevy- ja betonitiilikatteet. Eräiltä osin suositukset ovat vielä puutteellisia. Laskelmien selkiinnyttämiseksi esitetään laskentaesimerkkejä. Standardin ISO 15686-1 esittämä käyttöiän ennakoinnin menetelmä on tarkoitettu käyttöikäsuunnittelun ja muun elinkaarisuunnittelun tarpeisiin. Menetelmä tunnetaan kerroinmenetelmänä, koska siinä käyttöiän ennakointi tehdään kertomalla nk. vertailukäyttöikä eri tekijät huomioonottavilla kertoimilla. Kertoimet kattavat materiaalien laadusta, rakenteellisten yksityiskohtien suunnittelusta, työnsuorituksesta, ympäristö- ja käyttörasituksista sekä huollon tasosta johtuvat vaikutukset. Käyttöikäkertoimien määrittämisessä on hyödynnetty kaikkia käytettävissä olevia lähteitä ja menetelmiä. Eräiden tuoteryhmien kertoimien määrittämisessä on käytetty pääosin kokemukseen perustuvaa tietoa. Toisten tuoteryhmien kohdalla on käytetty kokeellisia ja laskennallisia menetelmiä kertoimien määrittämiseksi, koska kokemusperäistä tietoa on ollut vain vähän käytettävissä. Kaikissa tapauksissa on määritelty käyttöikää vastaava turmeltumisen rajatila. Alkuluvuissa esitetään käyttöikäsuunnittelun perusteet standardin ISO 15686-1 mukaisesti. Julkaisun lopussa on esitelty muita käyttöikäsuunnittelun menetelmiä sekä käyttöikää koskevan tiedon hankintamenetemiä.

Aineensiirto rakenteiden ja sisäilman välillä voi parantaa sisäilman laatua ja sisäilmastoa. Vesihöyryn kulkeutuminen diffuusiolla rakenteisiin tai rakenteista ja vaikutus sisäilman pitoisuuksiin analysoitiin lämmön, ilman ja aineensiirron laskentamallilla. Laskenta suoritettiin ympärivuotisena neljälle eri eurooppalaiselle paikkakunnalle. Kaasumaisten aineiden diffuusio huokoisten seinärakenteiden läpi kasvattaa selvästi näennäistä ilmanvaihtuvuutta huonon ilmanvaihdon huoneissa ja lievästi hyvin tuuletetuissa huoneissa. Huokoiset kosteuden sitomiskyvyn omaavat seinärakenteet vastaanottavat ja luovuttavat kosteutta muuttuvissa olosuhteissa siten, että sisäilman kosteuden vaihtelu tasoittuu merkittävästi sekä hyvin että huonosti tuuletetuissa huoneissa.

Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan puurakenteiden kosteusteknistä toimintaa sekä tarkastellaan rakenteiden ja sisäilman vuorovaikutuksia huoneilman kosteuden ja hiilidioksidipitoisuuden kannalta. Tavoitteena on määritellä aikaisempaa täsmällisemmin kosteustekniset toimintavaatimukset rakenteiden eri kerroksille. Tutkimuksessa mallinnetaan myös puupintojen homeen kasvu ja esitetään alustava kriteeristö homevaurioille. Lämpö- ja kosteusteknisiä rakenneanalyyseja varten on koottu ilmastotiedot kaikista Suomen rakennusviennin kannalta kiinnostavista kohdemaista sekä esitetään asuin- ja toimistohuoneille kosteusteknisesti mitoittava sisäilmasto. Tämä mahdollistaa rakenteiden lämpö- ja kosteustekniset rakenneanalyysit viennin tarpeisiin. Suomen ulkoilmastolle on tyypillistä, että ulkoilmaan kosketuksessa olevissa puupinnoissa voi käynnistyä homeen kasvu syksyisin, kun lämpötila ja suhteellinen kosteus ovat riittävän korkeat. On ilmeistä, että useimmista rakennuksista materiaalista riippumatta löytyy vähäistä kasvua rakenteiden kylmistä osista. Tähän ei tarvita kosteusteknistä virhettä eikä huoneilman kosteutta. Tutkimustuloksena esitetään homeen kasvun kriteeristö, joka realistisesti hyväksyy edellämainitun, mutta ei kosteusvaurioita. Avohuokoisen lämmöneristyksen lämpimällä puolella olevan ainekerroksen höyrynvastuksen tulee olla viisinkertainen verrattuna kylmällä puolella olevaan ainekerrokseen. Rakenteisiin tulee tehdä toimiva ilmansulku rakennuksen painesuhteiden hallitsemiseksi ja huoneilman vesihöyryn konvektion haitallisuuden välttämiseksi. Lattian maanvastaisen laatan yläpuolinen lämmöneristys heikentää rakenteen kuivumiskykyä. Huoneilman kanssa vuorovaikutteinen hygroskooppinen puumateriaali vaimentaa huoneilman kosteuden vaihtelua muuttuvissa kuormitusoloissa. Ilmiöllä on merkitystä hellekausina, kun huoneilman kosteus on luonnostaan korkea. Termisesti massiivinen puu vaimentaa myös vuorokautista lämpötilavaihtelua, kun auringon säteilykuormitus vaihtelee. Mainituilla ominaisuuksilla saattaa olla Suomeen verrattuna enemmän merkitystä mm. Keski-Euroopan säässä.
