BackgroundDespite the growing body of literature examining social media in health contexts, including public health communication, promotion, and surveillance, limited insight has been provided into how the utility of social media may vary depending on the particular public health objectives governing an intervention. For example, the extent to which social media platforms contribute to enhancing public health awareness and prevention during epidemic disease transmission is currently unknown. Doubtlessly, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) represents a great challenge at the global level, aggressively affecting large cities and public gatherings and thereby having substantial impacts on many health care systems worldwide as a result of its rapid spread. Each country has its capacity and reacts according to its perception of threat, economy, health care policy, and the health care system structure. Furthermore, we noted a lack of research focusing on the role of social media campaigns in public health awareness and public protection against the COVID-19 pandemic in Jordan as a developing country. ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to examine the influence of social media platforms on public health protection against the COVID-19 pandemic via public health awareness and public health behavioral changes as mediating factors in Jordan. MethodsA quantitative approach and several social media platforms were used to collect data via web questionnaires in Jordan, and a total of 2555 social media users were sampled. This study used structural equation modeling to analyze and verify the study variables. ResultsThe main findings revealed that the use of social media platforms had a significant positive influence on public health protection against COVID-19 as a pandemic. Public health awareness and public health behavioral changes significantly acted as partial mediators in this relationship. Therefore, a better understanding of the effects of the use of social media interventions on public health protection against COVID-19 while taking public health awareness and behavioral changes into account as mediators should be helpful when developing any health promotion strategy plan. ConclusionsOur findings suggest that the use of social media platforms can positively influence awareness of public health behavioral changes and public protection against COVID-19. Public health authorities may use social media platforms as an effective tool to increase public health awareness through dissemination of brief messages to targeted populations. However, more research is needed to validate how social media channels can be used to improve health knowledge and adoption of healthy behaviors in a cross-cultural context.

BACKGROUND: Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune disorder causing vitamin B12 deficiency resulting from impaired absorption caused by intrinsic factor absence. Positive parietal cell and intrinsic factor antibodies confirm the diagnosis. Intravenous vitamin B12 effectively treats Pernicious anemia. Severe cytopenias (anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia) may result, sometimes requiring emergency care and hospitalization. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case A: A 54-year-old male presented with six months of generalized fatigue and dyspnea on exertion. Laboratory tests revealed severe macrocytic anemia (Hb: 4.7 g/dL, MCV: 120 fL), with a peripheral blood smear showing hyper-segmented neutrophils and macro-ovalocytes, suggestive of megaloblastic anemia. Bone marrow biopsy demonstrated decreased cellularity with megaloblastic changes. Despite six-weeks of intravenous vitamin B12 therapy, there was no improvement in hematological parameters. Endoscopy revealed atrophic gastritis, and biopsy showed anti-parietal cell antibodies. Following a trial of immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine, no significant response was observed. Bone marrow transplantation was recommended. Case B: A 62-year-old male presented with epigastric pain, dyspepsia, fatigue, and a three-month history of anorexia. He was diagnosed with macrocytic anemia (Hb: 6.7 g/dL, MCV: 100 fL), and peripheral blood smear indicated megaloblastic changes. Bone marrow biopsy confirmed decreased cellularity and megaloblastic anemia. Despite standard intravenous vitamin B12 therapy, the patient showed no hematological improvement. Endoscopic findings revealed atrophic gastritis. Immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine also failed, leading to the recommendation of bone marrow transplantation. CONCLUSION: Continued efforts in understanding the pathophysiology of Pernicious anemia and autoimmune-mediated bone marrow failure syndromes may pave the way for innovative therapeutic approaches in the future.

AbstractWe examine an SIRS reaction-diffusion model with local dispersal and spatial heterogeneity to study COVID-19 dynamics. Using the operator semigroup approach, we establish the existence of disease-free equilibrium (DFE) and endemic equilibrium (EE), and derive the basic reproduction number, R0. Simulations show that without dispersal, reinfection and limited medical resources problems can cause a plateau in cases. Dispersal and spatial heterogeneity intensify localised outbreaks, while integrated control strategies (vaccination and treatment) effectively reduce infection numbers and epidemic duration. The possibility of reinfection demonstrates the need for adaptable health measures. These insights can guide optimised control strategies for enhanced public health preparedness. Germplasm banking is a fundamental tool for the preservation of autochthonous breeds. Semen cryopreservation is effective for this task, but protocols are adapted to commercial species, and post‐thawing sperm quality could be sensitive to environmental cues. We compared the post‐thawing sperm quality in doses from the CBA‐SERIDA bank in northern Spain for the Asturiana de la Montaña (AM) and Asturiana de los Valles (AV) autochthonous cattle breeds. Doses from 23 AM and 16 AV bulls (ejaculates from at least three different seasons) were assessed for motility (computer‐assisted sperm analysis), physiology and chromatin status (flow cytometry) after thawing and after 5 h at 38°C. Data were analysed using linear mixed‐effects and cosinor models for seasonal and breed effects and by correlations with the association of sperm quality with temperature‐humidity index (THI), considering the interval of spermatogenesis plus maturation. The breed affected sperm quality, with higher motility for AV and higher apoptotic ratio, mitochondrial activity, reactive oxygen species, DNA fragmentation and chromatin immaturity for AM. However, seasonality effects were minimal, and THI was not associated with sperm quality. In summary, the season seems to be a minor factor in the post‐thawing quality of the AM and AV autochthonous breeds, well‐adapted to their local environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many factors are aggravating desertification and degradation of forests such as urbanization, droughts, exploitation of natural resources and climate change. The study aims at estimating and assessing the degradation of forests in arid and semi-arid regions. This task however is complicated since the impact of the degradation will be in different forms such as loss of wood, soil erosion and lost recreational areas. Nevertheless the dynamic impact of the degradation is increasing the complexity of analysis since forest once lost is a reduction of value for all subsequent years. This study is considering the value of damages over time and it is using the concept of three environmental valuation methods to estimate the whole impact of the degradation: the habitat equivalency analysis (HEA), the productivity method and the benefit transfer method. The methods were applied to specific values of forests, depending on the best applicability, and the results combined to an overall value loss. The costs are calculated based on the year 2014 with two time horizons: 30 and 100 years. To apply the valuation approach, Jordan as an arid and semi-arid country is chosen. The result shows that the annual costs of environmental degradation of Jordanian forest areas equal about 0.14% of GDP in 2013, proving the enormous value lost to forest degradation or deforestation. The valuation approach can be transferred to other arid or semi-arid areas and stimulate forest conservation activities to prevent further degradation and to save the forest ecosystem services for the future.
