Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors characterize a major class of Type II antidiabetic drugs and play a significant role in lowering postprandial hyperglycemia. Currently, the market offers a limited number of synthetic inhibitors, highlighting the necessity for the discovery of new and potent compounds with enhanced efficacy in this area. For this purpose, an already established library of 51 plant extracts was screened against α-glucosidase, among which Bombax ceiba extract exhibits significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (IC50; 1.95 ± 0.29 µg/mL) as compared to acarbose (IC50; 3.14 ± 0.49 µg/mL). Moreover, in order to investigate the specific phytochemicals responsible for this activity, a literature-based library of 78 compounds from B. ceiba were curated and subsequently screened against α-glucosidase using molecular docking. The selection of hit compounds was evaluated on the base of computational tools. Out of these 78 compounds, nine potent compounds (Pelargonin, Simalin B, Linarin, Rutin, Nicotiflorin, Simalin A, Mangiferin, Quercetin and Apigenin) exhibited best binding affinities with α-glucosidase. These phytochemicals exhibited favorable binding energy, hydrogen bonding, and protein–ligand interactions as compared to acarbose. These results were further validated by in vitro α-glucosidase inhibition assay of commercially available phytochemicals. To the best of our knowledge, this report unveils B. ceiba as a highly effective inhibitor of α-glucosidase. The findings suggest that B. ceiba and its metabolites exhibit promising characteristics for the development of leading drugs in the field of anti α-glucosidase medications, which could play a crucial role in the management of diabetes.

Abstract With technological developments, the resolution of the display systems is increasing, causing image data to increase. Several technologies are aiding in optimizing these data during transmission and storage while maintaining quality. Still, the internal data transmission for accessing the memory sub‐system during reading and writing cycles consumes significant power while requiring large memory for storage, which is inefficient, especially for portable displays. Hence, this work investigates the feasibility of reducing data through approximation for images in different formats and resolutions for human and computer vision based applications. Different image quality assessment metrics are utilized for performance evaluations with optimum image quality assessment selection according to application requirements. In addition, the feasibility analysis is conducted for three different applications as examples of computer vision. The experimental analysis highlights theoretical and industrial importance by showing that image data can be reduced from 25.0% to 62.5%, while satisfying requirements for HVS‐based and computer vision‐based applications.

Abstract For liquid crystal display‐based devices, the memory sub‐system and backlight consume a notable amount of energy, posing a critical concern, especially for portable devices. This work introduces an integrated display system (IDS) aimed at combining technologies for energy‐efficient memory usage and backlight power optimization, which have been addressed independently until now in the existing literature. Two modifications of approximated memory are proposed to find an optimal scheme for energy‐efficient memory usage as part of the proposed IDS schemes. Additionally, three distinct IDS schemes are proposed and compared to identify an optimum solution, ensuring energy efficiency maximization while maintaining image quality for each image. Experimental results demonstrate that 42.19% of energy consumption in memory access and 37.57% of the backlight power consumption can be reduced, while maintaining the image quality in terms of two different metrics.

The recent detection of microplastics (MPs) in a large number of commercially important food items and beverages, including tap water, has drawn significant attention because of direct exposure and negative health effects on humans. Nevertheless, there is insufficient information on microplastic contamination in the tap water of developing countries. In the present study, we primarily analyzed supplied tap water samples from four major cities in Bangladesh to determine and characterize MPs using a stereomicroscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Several indices were employed to calculate human health exposures to microplastics. MPs were found in all of the water samples tested, with an overall mean of 35.33 ± 19.55 particles/L. The results of this study diverge from those of comparable research conducted globally, revealing that tap water in Bangladesh exhibited higher levels of contamination compared to other nations. MPs were found in three different shapes (fibers, fragments, and films), with fibers dominating the samples (96.2%), and 98.1% of the microplastics were less than 0.5 mm in size. Six different colors of MPs were observed, and transparent particles were dominant (63.9% of all observed MPs). FTIR infrared spectrum analysis revealed two major types of polymers: low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The projected daily consumption of microplastics was determined to be 2.65 particles per person per day, raising potential concerns for human health. The findings show that the treatment process of the water supply system is inadequate. Additionally, the sources of microplastics in tap water may come from where the water was collected for treatment and may be linked to a variety of anthropogenic activities, such as urbanization, sewage discharge, industrial waste disposal, and runoff from catchment areas.

Pharmaceutical industries in most developing countries with limited resources are expected to encounter several barriers while incorporating Industry 4.0 to transform into Pharma 4.0. With limited resources, a developing country must prioritize the barriers consider their impacts, and make a resource utilization plan accordingly. In this study, We employed a hierarchical multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDM) technique to identify potential barriers to Pharma 4.0 in developing countries and examine their effects to generate a prioritization inventory. Firstly, we extracted the likely barriers using a systematic literature study and used an expert opinion-based Delphi Method to choose the most pertinent barriers. Subsequently, we analyzed the correlation and influence of the selected barriers on each other by formulating a hierarchical multi-criteria model integrating Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) and the Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC). As an outcome, we found three distinct categories of the selected 12 barriers: Prominent (4 of 12), Influencing (5 of 12), and Resulting (3 of 12). The results of this study are intended to assist the government in developing a solid adoption strategy for Pharma 4.0 and supply chain strategists in ensuring optimum resource utilization by resolving the examined barriers during the deployment of Pharma 4.0. The study is the first of its kind to discover barriers to Pharma 4.0 adoption and create hierarchical correlations within the context of the pharmaceutical sector from the perspective of a developing country.

Groundwater (GW) plays a crucial role as the primary source of potable water in numerous developing nations. However, the increasing presence of microplastics (MPs) represents a concealed danger, threatening activities that guarantee safe drinking water in these countries. Despite this, there is limited awareness about the widespread existence of MPs in these regions of the world. In this study, we investigated the contamination levels, distribution, morphological characteristics, chemical composition, and associated public health risk of MPs in groundwater samples from six coastal districts of Bangladesh using stereomicroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). MPs were prevalent at all sampling stations, with average concentrations of 24.63 ± 16.13 items/L and a range of 4–75 items/L. The majority of MPs (97.6%) were fibers, indicating a likely origin from fabric disintegration during drying, washing, discarded fishing nets, personal care items, and municipal waste. The widespread occurrence of heavy metals in aquatic environments, resulting in their bioaccumulation within aquatic organisms like fish, presents potential hazards to human health. This study investigates the concentrations of five toxic heavy metals (Pb, Hg, Zn, Cu, and Cr) and their potential health implications in two economically important fish species (Otolithoides pama and Labeo bata) from a subtropical estuarine wetland system (Feni estuary, Bangladesh). Muscle and gill samples from 36 individual fish were analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). The results revealed that the average quantities of heavy metals in both fishes’ muscle followed the declining order of Zn (109.41–119.93 mg/kg) > Cu (45.52–65.43 mg/kg) > Hg (1.25–1.39 mg/kg) > Pb (0.68–1.12 mg/kg) > Cr (0.31–5.82 mg/kg). Furthermore, Zn was found to be present in the highest concentration within the gills of both species. While the levels of Cu, Zn, and Cr in the fish muscle were deemed acceptable for human consumption, the concentrations of Pb and Hg exceeded the permissible limits (>0.5 mg/kg) for human consumption. Different risk indices, including estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic or target risk (TR), revealed mixed and varying degrees of potential threat to human health. According to the EDI values, individuals consuming these fish may face health risks as the levels of Zn, Cu, and Cr in the muscle are either very close to or exceed the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI) threshold. Nevertheless, the THQ and HI values suggested that both species remained suitable for human consumption, as indicated by THQ (−6 to 10−4), except for Zn, which exceeded it (>10−4). The correlation matrix and multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) findings revealed that Pb and Cr primarily stemmed from natural geological backgrounds, whereas Zn, Cu, and Hg were attributed to human-induced sources such as agricultural chemicals, silver nanoparticles, antimicrobial substances, and metallic plating. Given the significance of fish as a crucial and nutritious element of a balanced diet, it is essential to maintain consistent monitoring and regulation of the levels and origins of heavy metals found within it.

Heavy metal contamination harms soil and plant growth, making it a serious global environmental issue. Due to the scarcity of canal water, people have become more reliant on groundwater, but aquifers are expensive and of poor quality. Therefore, wastewater has become one of the essential sources of irrigation in developing countries and rural areas. In rural areas, sanitary, sewage, and municipal wastewater are the most common sources of irrigation. The objective was to analyze and compare the concentration of heavy metals in Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) collected from two different sites, i.e., one field irrigated using sanitary wastewater and another by tube well water through drainage ditches in a rural area of Faisalabad. AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) analyzed heavy metals from plants through irrigated water, soil, and the collected edible parts of plant samples. The samples were digested by using acids and AAS-analyzed metals. The concentration of Cd (0.051 ± 0.029) mg/l found higher than the recommended values by WHO (0.01 mg/l) in sanitary wastewater, as well as Cd concentration (0.478 ± 0.276) mg/kg in edible parts of spinach, also detected beyond the permissible limits (0.2) mg/kg of WHO (2007). These exceeding values of Cd in edible parts of spinach may cause serious human health risks.

Potentially harmful materials, e.g., heavy metals, pesticides, dyes, and hydrocarbons, are often released untreated into freshwater bodies. When such pollutants are released in large quantities, there may be large-scale, sudden mortalities of aquatic organisms. This study summarizes experimental evidence about the disruption of gonadal development due to freshwater contamination. Adult fish specimens of Catla catla were collected from the River Chenab downstream of the Chakbandi Main Drain (CMD) entrance into the Chenab River. CMD collects domestic and industrial sewage wastes from Faisalabad city and disposes them into River Chenab, polluting this water body. Water samples were analyzed from each site of fish harvest for water quality parameters. Collected fish specimens were subjected to histopathological evaluation to detect the impact of pollution on the gonads of this fish species. The male Catla catla gonads showed marked histopathological alterations such as testes degeneration, generalized tissue degeneration produced by fragmentation and detachment of basement membrane, necrosis, and fibrosis in the testis. A loss of tubular arrangement, rupturing of the blood vessels, delimiting seminiferous lobules, vascular hypertrophy of the interstitial compartment, and appearance of a clustered organization were observed. The follicular epithelium in vitellogenic oocytes, rupturing and detachment of follicular basement membrane tissue with cytoplasmic vacuolization, immature oocytes with scattered yolk droplets, hypertrophied follicular epithelium, interstitial proteinaceous fluid deposition, and structural deterioration of follicles with early oocytes were observed in the ovary.

Methotrexate (MTX) is commonly used as a chemotherapeutic drug against cancer but its efficacy is limited due to its side effects. Baicalin is a flavonoid that has potent antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate baicalin’s protective effect on MTX-induced mitochondrial damage in testicular tissues of rats. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were distributed into four groups: control, MTX, MTX + baicalin, and baicalin alone. The activities of enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase was significantly lowered in the MTX treated group, compared to the other groups. Concomitantly, MTX group also showed elevated the levels of reactive oxygen species and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the testicular mitochondria. Furthermore, MTX group also showed reduced the activities of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle enzymes, i.e., succinate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase. The actions of electron transport chain (ETC) complexes (I-IV), as well as mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), were also reduced the MTX group. However, baicalin treatment reversed the damaging effect of MTX in the mitochondria of testicular tissues. The baicalin treatment potentially reduced the damaging impact of MTX in isolated mitochondria from testicular tissues. Thus, the current study revealed that the baicalin has conspicuous potential to attenuate the MTX induced mitochondrial damage in rat’s testicular tissues.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as Hg, As, and Pb have become concentrated in the aquatic ecosystem as a result of increased human activities. However, these substances frequently have synergistic or antagonistic effects on the human body or other animals. As a result, there are concerns world-wide that commercially available food products, especially fish, may be contaminated with hazardous elements. In this study, samples of four selected fishes, Gutum (Lepidocephalichthys guntea), Baim (Macrognathus pancalus), Baila (Glossogobius giuris), Meni (Nandus nandus) were analyzed from one of the largest freshwater wetlands (designed as a Ramsar Site) in South Asia to evaluate PTEs contamination status and human health risk assessment. The result demonstrated that the degree of contamination for six PTEs decreased in the following sequences for fish: Fe > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Hg. The edible part of G. giuris had the maximum value for Hg (0.42 μg/g dw), while N. nandus predominantly accumulated As ( Hg > Cu > Zn > Pb. The values for each index were less than 1, indicating that there were no substantial health risks for the consumers. The carcinogenic risks (CR) derived from the intake of Pb ranged from 4.92 × 10−8 to 4.14 × 10−8 for males and 5.45 × 10−8 to 4.59 × 10−8 for females, which also did not exceed the standard limit (1.00 × 10−6). This study demonstrated that, under the existing consumption rate, there was no potential health harm to consumers from consuming the studied fishes. This study offers a chance to regularly check PTEs in this environment, reducing the contamination of heavy metals.

Groundwater provides the largest source of usable water storage in Bangladesh. Groundwater samples have been analyzed for Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Co using atomic absorption spectrophotometer to evaluate the heavy metal distribution and contamination level at the southeastern coastal area of Bangladesh. Heavy metals in water samples are in the range of Fe (490–4710 µg/L), Mn (13–1970 µg/L), Zn (70–550 µg/L), Ni (42–255 µg/L), Cr (25–133 µg/L), Cu (34–95 µg/L), Cd (7–26 µg/L), Pb (0–20 µg/L), and Co (43–141 µg/L). The mean concentration of Cr, Cd, Fe, Mn, and Ni exceeded the Bangladesh standards for drinking water. Application of Pearson correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) indicate that groundwater of the study area are influenced by both geogenic and anthropogenic sources of the heavy metals. Heavy metal evaluation index (HEI), degree of contamination (Cd) and heavy metal pollution index (HPI) are employed to evaluate the overall pollution level of groundwater estimating 40, 27 and 60% of samples respectively and exhibit the medium degree of pollution.

Limited molecular studies have been documented with ACE gene polymorphism in OA and RA in the major industrial city in the country. The current study aims to investigate the prevalence of the arthritis risks and perform the ACE gene polymorphism in OA and RA in hospital based population. In this hospital-based study, we adopted 1000 arthritis subjects; 539 was suffering with OA and 461 RA in the local hospital. Based on the filled questionnaire and signed consent form, patients were involved in this study. Genotyping was performed in 1000 arthritis subjects. Our results indicated the risk of BMI and smoking status in both OA and RA diseases. Most of the participants involved in this study were considered to opt the non-vegetarian rather than the vegetarian. The arthritis patients were interested in eating the chicken (65.7%) and then red meat (31.5%). Regular walking (22.4%) was found to be higher in the arthritis patients than the regular exercise (4.7%). However, males are more active than the females in both the regular exercise and regular walking. Most of the arthritis patients (37.3%) had the comfortable sleep duration between 9 and 10 h. The prevalence of arthritis has been increased and patients with high BMI should be growing the risks of the various arthritis. Simultaneously, weight gain is connected with both the OA and RA diseases. Physical activity is required to reduce the risks of arthritis. The present study recommends to avoid the smoking and maintain the normal BMI specifically in the females to avoid the arthritis disease in Faisalabad city in the Pakistan. Obesity is known as weight gaining programme which leads to increase in body mass index (BMI), is known for significant risk factors for chronic diseases. The prevalence of obesity has been rising in South Asian countries, specifically in Pakistan. Numerous studies have shown the association with metabolic diseases (ex; obesity) with single nucleotide polymorphisms. The present study has been designed to investigate the association between C677T polymorphism in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene with obesity in Pakistan population. In this case-control study, we have enrolled 200 obese students and 200 non-obese or control students based on the BMI. Genomic DNA was isolated with enrolled 400 blood samples and PCR was performed with C677T polymorphism in the MTHFR gene to analyse the frequency. Later on restriction enzyme length polymorphism analysis was carried out for the undigested PCR products. Genotyping frequencies for C677T polymorphism were compared between obesity and non-obesity students. Genotype, allele and various genetic model of inheritances were calculated and documented the significant association (p 0.05). The present study concludes C677T polymorphism in MTHFR gene was genetically associated between the obesity risks in Pakistan population. Heavy metal discharge is the primary cause of freshwater pollution, harming fish health. This research was planned to calculate the seasonal variations in metal (Pb, Cu, and Ni) bioaccumulation in different tissues of Gills, Liver, Kidney, and Muscle from Cirrhinus mrigala sampled from River Chenab from an area of high-intensity pollution near Thatta Muhammad Shah. The results revealed significant (P ≤ 0.5) variations in metals bioaccumulation in different seasons. The lowest level of selected metals was observed in winter, whereas the maximum level was noted in the summer. The concentration of selected heavy metals differed seasonally. During winter Pb concentration distribution in descending order was observed in liver (0.823 ± 0.009 ppm) > kidney(0.817 ± 0.011 ppm) > muscle(0.758 ± 0.009 ppm) > gills(0.742 ± 0.011 ppm). Whereas, in summer it was noted as liver (1.726 ± 0.066 ppm) > gills (1.633 ± 0.060 ppm) > kidney (1.575 ± 0.051 ppm) > muscle (1.532 ± 0.050 ppm). While during winter, the bioaccumulation of Cu in organs was noted with descending order of kidney (1.88 ± 0.038) > liver(1.75 ± 0.037) > gills (1.67 ± 0.043) > muscle (1.45 ± 0.031)ppm, while in summer, it was gills (2.85 ± 0.071) > kidney (2.84 ± 0.082) > liver (2.83 ± 0.068) > muscle (2.72 ± 0.065) ppm. In winter, the Ni bioaccumulation with descending order was in the kidney (7.83 ± 0.139) > liver (7.68 ± 0.159) > muscle (7.63 ± 0.162) > gills (7.61 ± 0.129)ppm and in a season of summer, it was detected as in kidney (8.71 ± 0.129) > muscle (8.59 ± 0.131) > liver (8.56 ± 0.141) > gills (8.56 ± 0.131) ppm. All studied heavy metals were found to be above the WHO permissible limits. Histopathological evaluation of fish tissues has been considered an important indicator of environmental pollution monitoring. Histology of kidney and liver tissues showed congestion, necrosis, dilation in Bowman capsule space, while liver showed necrosis, cytoplasmic vacuolation, and sinusoid dilation. This study revealed that the Chenab River is being polluted due to the untreated discharge of industrial effluents and sewage runoff from the city, and these heavy metals from anthropogenic pollution load have adverse effects on the fish population in the river system.

Trace-element or heavy-metal pollution has emerged as a serious concern in terms of both environmental and human health issues. This study measured six trace and toxic heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn) in four marine fish and shrimp species to assess their accumulation levels and evaluate the risks to human health. The mean concentrations of the metals in fish and shrimp species (Labeo bata, Sillaginopsis panijus, Platycepalus fuscus, and Penaeus monodon) followed the decreasing order of Zn (40.8 ± 9.7 μg/g) > Cu (17.8 ± 7.1 μg/g) > Pb (6.2 ± 1.8 μg/g) > Ni (0.4 ± 0.3 μg/g) > Cd (0.06 ± 0.02 μg/g > Cr (below detection level). Among the metals, only Pb in finfish and Pb, Cu, and Zn in shrimp samples exceeded the national recommended limits, representing possible risks to consumers. The mean metal concentrations in the studied fish/shrimp species followed the descending order of P. monodon > S. panijus > P. fuscus > L. bata, which implies that bottom dwellers and omnivores had higher levels of metals. However, the estimated daily intake (EDI) concentrations of Zn and Cu for the studied species were lower than the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). In addition, the Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI or TTHQ) values for all species were < 1, indicating that consumers might not experience carcinogenic health risks. A strong significant (p < 0.05) correlation between Cu and Pb (r = 0.623) and Zn and Cu (r = −0.871) indicated they were from the same source of origin. Cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated possible anthropogenic sources of toxic metals in the study area, specifically industrial wastes and agricultural chemicals.

The present study aimed to determine the degree of changes in the histological architecture of the liver, gills, kidneys, and muscles of fish Oreochromis niloticus collected from different polluted river sites. Fish samples collected from the Faisalabad Fish Hatchery and upstream of Chakbandi drain acted as a control. Necrosis, hemorrhage, and epithelial hyperplasia were observed in the gills of fish inhabiting the river downstream of the Chakbandi drain entrance. Liver tissues were found to be affected by vacuolated cytoplasm, bile duct proliferation, melanomacrophages, and necrosis. In kidney tissues, shrinkage of the renal cortex, necrosis, and destructive renal tubules were observed. Histopathology of muscles indicates the presence of hypertrophy and swollen myofibers. In contrast, upstream specimens of fish exhibited mild tissue alterations. Histopathology of gills tissue showed vacuolization. Liver tissues indicated the presence of hypertrophy and more frequent Kupffer cells than usual. The vacuolation was also observed in kidney tissues. Muscle tissues expressed splitting of muscle fibres and degeneration in muscle bundles. However, sections of tissues collected from farmed fish have normal morphology and no anomalies. The histopathological assessment indicated various cellular, biochemical, and histological changes in response to the contamination in the vicinity of the fish.

Targeting the serine biosynthesis pathway enzymes has turned up as a novel strategy for anti-cancer therapeutics. 3- Phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH) is the rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 3-Phosphoglyceric acid (3-PG) into 3-Phosphohydroxy pyruvate (3-PPyr) in the first step of serine synthesis pathway and perform a critical role in cancer progression. PHGDH has been reported to be overexpressed in different types of cancers and emerged as a novel target for cancer therapeutics. During this study, virtual screening tools were used for the identification of inhibitors of PHGDH. A library of phenolic compounds was docked against two binding sites of PHGDH using Molegro Virtual Docker (MVD) software. Out of 169 virtually tested compounds, Salvianolic acid C and Schizotenuin F possess good binding potential to co-factor binding site of PHGDH while Salvianolic acid I and Chicoric acid were identified as the best binding compounds toward the substrate binding site of PHGDH. The top selected compounds were evaluated for different physiochemical and ADMET properties, the obtained results showed that none of these hit compounds violated the Pfizer Rule and they possess acceptable ADMET profiles. Further, a commercially available hit compound, Chicoric acid, was evaluated for its anti-cancer potential against PHGDH-expressing gastric cancer cell lines (MGC-803 and SGC-7901) as well as cell lines with low expression of PHGDH (MCF-7 and MDA-MB2-31), which demonstrated that Chicoric acid possesses selective cytotoxicity toward PHGDH expressing cancer cell lines. Thus, this study has unveiled the potential of phenolic compounds, which could serve as novel candidates for the development of PHGDH inhibitors as anti-cancer agents.

The heavy metal ions originating from the various point and nonpoint sources seriously threatening the lotic ecosystem by posing severe health crises to the aquatic organisms of higher trophic levels. The freshwater turtles with delicate body structure and devoid of any hardcovers are prone to higher heavy metal bioaccumulation risks. The present study was conducted to determine heavy metals bioaccumulation in three soft-shelled and hard-shelled freshwater turtle species in Pakistan. We collected the water samples and cadaver turtle bodies at both sites and transported them to the laboratory for heavy metal content evaluation. The skeletal muscles (1 g) and water samples (100 ml) were processed by acid digestion and prepared metals analyses by AAS. The results indicated that the mean concentrations of Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) and Cadmium (Cd) were significantly lower, while Nickel (Ni), Cobalt (Co), Lead (Pb) and Chromium (Cr) were significantly higher at both sites compared with world health organization (WHO, 2004) standards. Muscles of softshell turtle (Lissemys punctata) showed the maximum bioaccumulation of targeted metals than other two species of hard-shell turtles i.e. Cu (7.61 ± 1.88), Zn (49.17 ± 4.11), Ni (2.77 ± 0.41), Cd (0.21 ± 0.02), Co (3.31 ± 0.43), Pb (4.70 ± 0.62) and Cr (6.09 ± 0.39). The mean concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Cr were maximum in water and turtle species muscles collected from Trimmu Barrage. In conclusion, the heavy metal loads in water and bioaccumulation patterns in the skeletal muscles of freshwater turtle species illustrated species and location-based variations with overall similar pattern corroborations among the sequence of heavy presence levels.

This study was carried out to evaluate the nutrient composition and functional properties of dried Moringa oleifera leaves collected from two different ecological zones in Bangladesh, Joypurhat and Mymensingh. The proximate analysis revealed that M. oleifera leaves were rich in protein content, ranging from (22.99–29.36%), and low in fat, from (4.03–9.51%), fiber, from (6.00–9.60%), and ash, from (8.05–10.38%). The vitamin C content of fresh M. oleifera leaves ranged from (187.96–278.50 mg/100 g), Ca ranged from (1.322–2.645%), P ranged from (0.152–0.304 g/100 g), and K ranged from (1.317–2.025 g/100 g). The functional properties included WAC (158.00–415.00%), FC (28.30–117.65 mL/l) and FS (333.33–1000 mL/l). Together, these findings indicate that M. oleifera leaves are rich in vital phytonutrients, suggesting a promising balance of food ingredients for human and animal diets.

Shrimp is one of the major export products in South Asian countries and also an eminent source of nutrition for humans. Hence, any negative effect of this industry may affect not only the country’s economy but also human health. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to assess heavy metal contamination and associated human health risks in cultured shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and aquaculture sludge collected from three shrimp farms of the Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh. The results showed that among the eight metals studied, Pb (17.75 ± 1.5 mg/kg) and Cu (9.43 ± 2.8 mg/kg) levels in all shrimp samples were higher than the recommended limit, whereas the concentrations of Cd (0.09 ± 0.03 mg/kg), Mn (4.83 ± 2.2 mg/kg), As (0.04 ± 0.02 mg/kg), Hg (0.02 ± 0.006 mg/kg), Zn (18.89 ± 2.9 mg/kg) and Cr (0.69 ± 0.6 mg/kg) were within the permissible level. The concentrations of Mn (1043.37 ± 59.8 mg/kg), Cr (30.38 ± 2.1 mg/kg), Zn (74.72 ± 1.13 mg/kg) and Cu (31.14 ± 1.4 mg/kg) in the sludge of all farms were higher than the recommended limit, whereas the concentrations of Pb (20.23 ± 1.9 mg/kg), Cd (0.09 ± 0.2 mg/kg), As (0.44 ± 0.34 mg/kg) and Hg (0.08 ± 0.02 mg/kg) in all sludge samples were lower than the threshold limits. However, the estimated daily intake (EDI), targeted hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) assessed for potential human health risk implications suggested that Pb and Cr may pose non-carcinogenic health effects, although carcinogenic risks (CR) values were acceptable for consumers. However, the pollution load index (PLI) of the studied area was below 1, which indicates low deterioration of the area. Geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and contamination factor (CF) analyses revealed that study area is unpolluted and sludge is enriched with metals in the following order: Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Cd > Hg > Pb > As.

Ensuring the quality of fresh-cut vegetables is the greatest challenge for the food industry and is equally as important to consumers (and their health). Several investigations have proven the necessity of advanced technology for detecting foreign materials (FMs) in fresh-cut vegetables. In this study, the possibility of using near infrared spectral analysis as a potential technique was investigated to identify various types of FMs in seven common fresh-cut vegetables by selecting important wavebands. Various waveband selection methods, such as the weighted regression coefficient (WRC), variable importance in projection (VIP), sequential feature selection (SFS), successive projection algorithm (SPA), and interval PLS (iPLS), were used to investigate the optimal multispectral wavebands to classify the FMs and vegetables. The application of selected wavebands was further tested using NIR imaging, and the results showed good potentiality by identifying 99 out of 107 FMs. The results indicate the high applicability of the multispectral NIR imaging technique to detect FMs in fresh-cut vegetables for industrial application.

The demand for rapid and nondestructive methods to determine chemical components in food and agricultural products is proliferating due to being beneficial for screening food quality. This research investigates the feasibility of Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) to predict total as well as an individual type of isoflavones and oligosaccharides using intact soybean samples. A partial least square regression method was performed to develop models based on the spectral data of 310 soybean samples, which were synchronized to the reference values evaluated using a conventional assay. Furthermore, the obtained models were tested using soybean varieties not initially involved in the model construction. As a result, the best prediction models of FT-NIR were allowed to predict total isoflavones and oligosaccharides using intact seeds with acceptable performance (R2p: 0.80 and 0.72), which were slightly better than the model obtained based on FT-IR data (R2p: 0.73 and 0.70). The results also demonstrate the possibility of using FT-NIR to predict individual types of evaluated components, denoted by acceptable performance values of prediction model (R2p) of over 0.70. In addition, the result of the testing model proved the model’s performance by obtaining a similar R2 and error to the calibration model.

Anthocyanins are an important micro-component that contributes to the quality factors and health benefits of black rice. Anthocyanins concentration and compositions differ among rice seeds depending on the varieties, growth conditions, and maturity level at harvesting. Chemical composition-based seeds inspection on a real-time, non-destructive, and accurate basis is essential to establish industries to optimize the cost and quality of the product. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the feasibility of near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) to predict the content of anthocyanins in black rice seeds, which will open up the possibility to develop a sorting machine based on rice micro-components. Images of thirty-two samples of black rice seeds, harvested in 2019 and 2020, were captured using the NIR-HSI system with a wavelength of 895–2504 nm. The spectral data extracted from the image were then synchronized with the rice anthocyanins reference value analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For comparison, the seed samples were ground into powder, which was also captured using the same NIR-HSI system to obtain the data and was then analyzed using the same method. The model performance of partial least square regression (PLSR) of the seed sample developed based on harvesting time, and mixed data revealed the model consistency with R2 over 0.85 for calibration datasets. The best prediction models for 2019, 2020, and mixed data were obtained by applying standard normal variate (SNV) pre-processing, indicated by the highest coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.85, 0.95, 0.90, and the lowest standard error of prediction (SEP) of 0.11, 0.17, and 0.16 mg/g, respectively. The obtained R2 and SEP values of the seed model were comparable to the result of powder of 0.92–0.95 and 0.09–0.15 mg/g, respectively. Additionally, the obtained beta coefficients from the developed model were used to generate seed chemical images for predicting anthocyanins in rice seed. The root mean square error (RMSE) value for seed prediction evaluation showed an acceptable result of 0.21 mg/g. This result exhibits the potential of NIR-HSI to be applied in a seed sorting machine based on the anthocyanins content.

ABSTRACT A cross sectional study was conducted in two types of respiratory patients in hospital population. It was found that tuberculosis (T.B) was the most common type (29.66%) followed by the asthma (28.08%) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (11.31%). Average age of diagnosis was 42.15 ± 0.65 years and average age at present 47.99 ± 0.70 years. Age group 51-60 years was more prone to this disease (21.13%). Most of the patients were married (80.06%). The highest representation of patients with respiratory diseases was observed in 1st birth order (30.36%) followed by 2nd (26.49%) and 3rd (18.45%), while the lowest was in 10th birth order (0.40%). Tuberculosis, asthma and COPD are the most prevalent types of respiratory diseases. Respiratory diseases were more common in males, in first birth order and in people of age group 51-60 years. This disease was more common in married, unemployed, less educated, and lower socioeconomic status people. Socioeconomic status and urban and rural living had a profound effect on the onset of disease.

This research work was carried out to determine the effects of water contamination on the fatty acid (FA) profile of periphyton, zoobenthos, two Chinese carps and a common carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Ctenopharygodon idella and Cyprinus carpio), captured from highly polluted (HP), less polluted (LP), and non-polluted (NP) sites of the Indus river. We found that the concentration of heavy metals in the river water from the polluted locations exceeded the permissible limits suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Fatty acid profiles in periphyton, zoobenthos, H. molitrix, C. idella, and C. carpio in the food web of river ecosystems with different pollution levels were assessed. Lauric acid and arachidic acids were not detected in the biomass of periphyton and zoobenthos from HP and LP sites compared to NP sites. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosadienoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid were not recorded in the biomass samples of periphyton and zoobenthos in both HP and LP sites. Caprylic acid, lauric acid, and arachidic acid were not found in H. molitrix, C. idella, and C. carpio captured from HP. In this study, 6 and 9 omega series FAs were identified in the muscle samples of H. molitrix, C. idella and C. carpio captured from HP and LP sites compared to NP sites, respectively. Less polyunsaturated fatty acids were observed in the muscle samples of H. molitrix, C. idella, and C. carpio collected from HP than from LP. The heavy metals showed significant negative correlations with the total FAs in periphyton, zoobenthos, and fish samples.

The levels of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), endosulfan, endosulfan sulfate, carbofuran, and cartap which were estimated in the flesh of Catla catla sampled from ten sites of Ravi River between its stretches from Shahdara to Head Balloki were studied to know the level of contamination of the selected pesticides by GC-ECD method. All fish samples were found contaminated with different concentrations of DDT, DDE, endosulfan, and carbofuran; however, DDT and DDE concentrations were more than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) about food standards, while endosulfan sulfate and cartap were not detected. Pesticide concentrations in the fish flesh were ranged from 3.240 to 3.389 for DDT, 2.290 to 2.460 for DDE, 0.112 to 0.136 for endosulfan, and 0.260 to 0.370 μg g−1 for carbofuran. The findings revealed that the pesticide concentrations in the fish flesh decreased in the order: DDT > DDE > carbofuran > endosulfan. After Degh fall and After Hudiara nulla fall river sampling sites were found severely contaminated. It is proposed that a constant monitoring programs are needed to be initiated to overcome the present alarming situation.

For liquid crystal display‐based devices, the memory sub‐system and backlight consume a notable amount of energy, posing a critical concern, especially for portable devices. This work introduces an integrated display system (IDS) aimed at combining technologies for energy‐efficient memory usage and backlight power optimization, which have been addressed independently until now in the existing literature. Two modifications of approximated memory are proposed to find an optimal scheme for energy‐efficient memory usage as part of the proposed IDS schemes. Additionally, three distinct IDS schemes are proposed and compared to identify an optimum solution, ensuring energy efficiency maximization while maintaining image quality for each image. Experimental results demonstrate that 42.19% of energy consumption in memory access and 37.57% of the backlight power consumption can be reduced, while maintaining the image quality in terms of two different metrics. With technological developments, the resolution of the display systems is increasing, causing image data to increase. Several technologies are aiding in optimizing these data during transmission and storage while maintaining quality. Still, the internal data transmission for accessing the memory sub‐system during reading and writing cycles consumes significant power while requiring large memory for storage, which is inefficient, especially for portable displays. Hence, this work investigates the feasibility of reducing data through approximation for images in different formats and resolutions for human and computer vision based applications. Different image quality assessment metrics are utilized for performance evaluations with optimum image quality assessment selection according to application requirements. In addition, the feasibility analysis is conducted for three different applications as examples of computer vision. The experimental analysis highlights theoretical and industrial importance by showing that image data can be reduced from 25.0% to 62.5%, while satisfying requirements for HVS‐based and computer vision‐based applications.
