The sol-gel polycondensation of tetramethoxysilane is followed for the first time by functionalization of the oligomeric silane species with a redox active ferrocene. The decrease in the average diffusion coefficient of the mobile species is recorded as it brings information on the sol or gel state, as well as an easy insight of the polycondensation kinetics.

Sulfur particles with a conductive polymer coating of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) "PEDOT" were prepared by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma technology under atmospheric conditions (low temperature, ambient pressure). We report a solvent-free, low-cost, low-energy-consumption, safe, and low-risk process to make the material development and production compatible for sustainable technologies. Different coating protocols were developed to produce PEDOT-coated sulfur powders with electrical conductivity in the range of 10 -8 -10 -5 S/cm. The raw sulfur powder (used as the reference) and (low-, optimum-, high-) PEDOT-coated sulfur powders were used to assemble lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells with a high sulfur loading of ∼4.5 mg/cm 2 . Long-term galvanostatic cycling at C/10 for 100 cycles showed that the capacity fade was mitigated by ∼30% for the cells containing the optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur in comparison to the reference Li-S cells with raw sulfur. Rate capability, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance analyzes confirmed the improved behavior of the PEDOT-coated sulfur as an active material for lithium-sulfur batteries. The Li-S cells containing optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur showed the highest reproducibility of their electrochemical properties. A wide variety of bulk and surface characterization methods including conductivity analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and NMR spectroscopy were used to explain the chemical features and the superior behavior of Li-S cells using the optimum-PEDOT-coated sulfur material. Moreover, postmortem [SEM and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)] analyzes of uncoated and coated samples allowed us to exclude any significant effect at the electrode scale even after 70 cycles.

When cycling diphosphonate-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials as negative battery electrodes, specific charges exceeding the maximum for a metal redox reaction are recorded. Classical explanations are electrolyte reduction and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) oxidation. Using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the P K-edge experiment, we demonstrate an additional contribution of reversible ligand co-cycling based on the P-atoms of the diphosphonate ligands, upon delithiation occurring during the first potential plateau, which matches perfectly to previous investigations using Fe K-edge XAS. We thus investigate experimentally an anionic redox process in situ. Thereby we could demonstrate a possible methodology to measure P K-edge XANES on Li-ion battery active materials under operando conditions, which could be applied to verify the predicted P co-cycling of other conversion-type negative electrode materials.

Lithium chromium pyrophosphate (LiCrP2O7) and carbon-coated LiCrP2O7 (LiCrP2O7/C) were synthesized by solid-state and sol-gel routes, respectively. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and conductivity measurements. LiCrP2O7 powder has a conductivity of ~ 10(-8) S cm(-1), ~ 10(4) times smaller than LiCrP2O7/C (~ 10(-4) S cm(-1)). LiCrP2O7/C is electrochemically active, mainly between 1.8 and 2.2 V versus Li(+)/Li (Cr(3+)/Cr(2+) redox couple), whereas LiCrP2O7 has limited electrochemical activity. LiCrP2O7/C delivers a reversible specific charge up to ~ 105 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles, close to the theoretical limit of 115 mAh g(-1). Operando XRD experiments show slight peak shifts between 2.2 and 4.8 V versus Li(+)/Li, and a reversible amorphization between 1.8 and 2.2 V versus Li(+)/Li, suggesting an insertion reaction mechanism.

Macroporous TiO₂ (anatase) thin films are fabricated by an all low-temperature process in which substrates are dip-coated in suspensions of mixed anatase nanoparticles and polystyrene beads, and the templating agents are removed by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at a temperature below 50 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy show that the templating polymer beads are removed by UV irradiation combined with the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂. X-Ray diffraction reveals that nanoparticle growth is negligible in UV irradiated films, while nanoparticle size increases by almost 10 times in calcined films that are prepared for comparison. The macroporous films are prepared on FTO-(fluorine-doped tin oxide) coated glass and ITO (indium tin oxide) coated flexible plastics and thereby used as working electrodes. In both cases, the films are electrochemically addressable, and cyclic voltammetry is consistent with the response of bulk TiO₂ for calcined films and of nanoscale-TiO₂ for UV-irradiated films., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In the present paper, we report the synthesis of bimodal mesoporous anatase TiO2 films by the EISA (Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly) method using sol-gel chemistry combining two porogen agents, a low molecular weight ionic template and a neutral block copolymer. The surfactant template (C16mimCl) generates non-oriented worm-like pores (8 to 10 nm) which connect the regularly packed ellipsoidal mesopores (15 to 20 nm diameter) formed by an amphiphilic block copolymer of the type poly(isobutylene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PIB-PEO). The surfactant template can also significantly influence the size and packing of the ellipsoidal mesopores. The mesostructural organization and mesoporosity of the films are studied by Environmental Ellipsometry-Porosimetry (EEP), Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) and electron microscopy techniques. Electrochemical characterization is performed to study the permeability of the films to liquid solutions, using two types of probe moieties (K3Fe(III)(CN)6 and Ru(bpy)3(2+)) by the wall-jet technique. An optimum ratio of C16mimCl/PIB-PEO provides anatase films with a continuous bimodal mesopore structure, possessing a permeability up to two times higher than that of the mesoporous films templated by PIB-PEO only (with partially isolated mesopores). When C16mimCl is used in large quantities, up to 20% weight vs. PIB-PEO, large overall porous volume and surface area are obtained, but the mesostructure is increasingly disrupted, leading to a severe loss of permeability of the bimodal films. A dye-sensitized solar cell set-up is used with anatase films as the photoelectrode. The photosensitizer loading and the total energy conversion efficiency of the solar cells using the mesoporous films templated by an optimal ratio of the two porogen agents C16mimCl and PIB-PEO can be substantially increased in comparison with the solar cells using mesoporous films templated by PIB-PEO only.

In this work, we report a new sensing approach based on electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) in an electrodeposited redox hydrogel using glucose dehydrogenase as a model system. The ECL-hydrogel films were electrodeposited by potential cycling of a PBS solution containing [poly(4-vinylpyridine)Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)(2)Cl(-)](+/2+). The film was easily prepared in a rapid, reproducible and well-controlled one-step procedure. The deposited hydrogel film is permeable to water-soluble chemicals and biochemicals, like enzyme substrates and coenzymes. Electrochemistry and ECL of NADH were studied at the level of the hydrogel film. Results indicate that ECL emission occurs at a relatively low anodic potential compared to the classical Ru(bipy)(3)(2+) complex. This is an important advantage since the measurements performed with the ECL hydrogel are thus less sensitive to interfering species. An ECL oxidative-reductive mechanism is presented for the ECL-hydrogel. Then we showed that the intensity of the ECL of NADH produced by the enzymatic activity varies with the enzyme substrate concentration. Alternating multilayers of ordered mesoporous films of different metal oxides were prepared with the EISA (evaporation-induced self-assembly) method, using block copolymer templates. Selecting certain metal oxides, as exemplified with TiO2 and WO3 in this work, a high mesoscopic order could be achieved and preserved during crystallization. In addition to standard characterizations, the electrochromism of the multilayer film was studied, proving good accessibility of the single layers.

WO3 thin layers with nanometer-scale periodicity were prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) using a novel amphiphilic block-copolymer template (poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide)). The evolution of the mesoporous ordered network and the crystallinity of the framework were monitored by 2D-SAXS, WAXS, SEM, XPS, and porosimetry. By annealing the films, the pore-wall crystallinity is adjusted between fully amorphous and highly crystalline without mesostructural degradation. Thus, the crystalline-film framework is composed of phase-pure monoclinic WO3 nanoparticles (12-14 nm in size). Furthermore, heat treatment transforms the originally spherical mesopores into ellipsoids, resulting in a unidirectionally shrunken, but still well-defined and fully accessible bcc mesopore architecture. The influence of mesoporosity and crystallinity on electrochemical/electrochromic characteristics was addressed by monitoring electrochemical features and the absorption changes during Li insertion/extraction (repetitive potentiostatic cycling). Both the amorphous and crystalline mesoporous films possess electrochromic response times on the order of only seconds, which are attributable to the facilitated insertion of guest ions due to shortening of the diffusion path lengths. Also, the insertion/extraction reversibility of crystalline WO3 layers with 3D mesoporosity is improved compared to amorphous ones and reaches values close to 100%.
