- Abstract
Sialoliths are commonly characterized by the mineralization of organic and inorganic compounds in the ducts of the salivary glands. They are more common in middle-aged males and the most common signs and symptoms are pain and localized swelling. They most commonly affect the submandibular gland and are the most common cause of acute or chronic inflammation of the major salivary glands. Calculi can be demonstrated by conventional occlusal radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, scintigraphy, salivary endoscopy and sialography. Treatment involves spontaneous elimination through milking movements under guidance and the use of medication, or surgical removal of the sialolith, in some cases requiring the removal of the gland itself. The aim of this paper is to report the clinical case of a patient seen at a private clinic who presented with a sialolith in the right submandibular gland. The patient underwent surgical excision of the sialolith, with preservation of the submandibular gland, under local anesthesia without major complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
