Background: To compare the impacts of different remineralizing agents on demineralized enamel, we focused on chitosan nanoparticles (ChiNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)., Methods: This study was conducted on 40 extracted human premolars with artificially induced demineralization using demineralizing solution. Prior to the beginning of the experimental procedures, the samples were preserved in artificial saliva solution. The nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and teeth were divided into four equal groups: Group A was utilized as a control group (no demineralization) and received no treatment. Group B was subjected to demineralization with no treatment. Group C was subjected to demineralization and then treated with ChiNPs. Group D was subjected to demineralization and then treated with AgNPs. The teeth were evaluated for microhardness. The enamel surfaces of all the samples were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for morphological changes and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) for elemental analysis., Results: The third and fourth groups had the highest mean microhardness and calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P) contents. SEM of these two groups revealed relative restoration of homogenous remineralized enamel surface architecture with minimal micropores., Conclusion: Chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) and silver NPs help restore the enamel surface architecture and mineral content. Purpose: To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin composite to dentin contaminated with artificial saliva (AS) containing mucin and amylase using an experimental method controlling the volume of saliva and adhesive in a defined surface area., Methods: Flat bonding surfaces were prepared on extracted human molars (320 grit surface). Using adhesive tape, a 4.5 mm bonding window was prepared on the dentin surfaces. Groups (n= 12) were prepared using the etch & rinse (ER) or self-etch (SE) modes for Adhese Universal (ADH), Scotchbond Universal Plus (SBU), and Prime & Bond active (PBA) dental adhesives (DA). For the control (C) groups, the adhesives were applied per the manufacturers' instructions with 2.0 µl or 3.0 µl of the adhesive. For the saliva-contaminated groups, 1.0 µl of artificial saliva with mucin was applied in the bonding window either dried or allowed to remain wet before the application of either 2.0 µl or 3.0 µl of the adhesive. After the adhesive film was air dried and light cured using an Ultradent bonding fixture, Spectrum TPH3 was bonded to the prepared surfaces. After water storage for 24 hours at 37°C, the specimens were debonded and shear bond strength (SBS) was calculated (MPa). A Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni correction was used to determine group differences (P< 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to visualize the interfacial surfaces prepared using an ion-etching technique., Results: Mean SBS for the three adhesives were similar in both ER and SE modes to uncontaminated dentin surfaces for all the control groups. For dentin contaminated with dried or wet saliva, both the surface condition and the adhesive system were significant factors at a confidence level of 95%. For the dried saliva test groups, ADH and PBA with 3.0 µl of adhesive generated similar SBS values to controls while SBU generated lower values. Lower values were generated when using 2.0 µl of adhesive for the three adhesives in SE and ER modes except for PBA in the ER mode. Using wet saliva and 3.0 µl of adhesive ADH and SBU generated lower SBS values while PBA generated similar values to controls. Under SEM, morphology at the adhesive dentin interfaces was similar among the adhesives to uncontaminated dentin but notable differences were observed for SBU and ADH for both wet and dried saliva-contaminated surfaces., Clinical Significance: Salivary contamination differentially affects shear bond strength and the morphology of the bonded interface of universal adhesives to dentin. These differences are specific to the adhesive tested and are influenced by using the etch and rinse or self-etch strategies and the volume of adhesive used. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the discolouration resistance of attachments made of composites having different physical properties, filler ratios and viscosity through the simulated environment and conditions., Materials and Methods: Seventy-two extracted human teeth were aligned to simulate upper and lower dental arches. The attachments were prepared according to the guides determined by ClearCorrect. Three different composite groups were used for attachments preparation: Aligner Connect, G-Aenial Universal Injectable, and Tetric Prime and Tetric Evoflow combination. Dental models and aligners were kept in artificial saliva throughout the experiment of 96 weeks. The aligners were also subjected to 2308 thermal cycles and insertion and removing procedures 840 times for each period of 12 weeks. Afterwards, the models were kept in coffee and red wine solutions. Colour measurements were made with Vita Easy Shade 4.0 at 12th, 24th, 48th and 96th simulated weeks., Results: No significant difference in discolouration was observed during thermal cycle application of 12th and 24th week experimental periods. In the later periods, discolouration was observed in the composite materials, and G-Aenial Universal Injectable was less coloured than the other samples. The composite samples were more coloured in proportion to their residence time. The G-Aenial Universal Injectable was more affected by wine solution, and Tetric Prime and Tetric Evoflow combination were more affected by coffee solution., Conclusions: Viscosity, resin matrix content and nature of inorganic filler particles of the composite materials significantly affect the colour changing properties of them due to the long-term ageing and exposure to colouring agents., (© 2024 The Authors. Objective: To investigate the anticaries effects of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) combined with casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on enamel in a biofilm-challenged environment., Material and Methods: GO and GQDs were synthesised using citric acid. The antibiofilm and biofilm inhibition effects for Streptococcus mutans were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and colony-forming units (CFU). Remineralisation ability was determined by assessing mineral loss, calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, and surface morphology. To create a biofilm-challenged environment, enamel blocks were immersed in S. mutans to create the lesion and then subjected to artificial saliva/biofilm cycling for 7 days. Anticaries effects of GO, GQDs, GQDs@CPP-ACP, GO@CPP-ACP, and CPP-ACP were determined by broth pH and mineral changes after 7-day pH cycling. Biocompatibility was tested using a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) assay for human gingival fibroblasts (HGF-1)., Results: GQDs and GO presented significant antibiofilm and biofilm inhibition effects compared to the CPP-ACP and control groups (P < 0.05). The enamel covered by GQDs and GO showed better crystal structure formation and less mineral loss (P < 0.05) than that covered by CPP-ACP alone. After 7 days in the biofilm-challenged environment, the GO@CPP-ACP group showed less lesion depth than the CPP-ACP and control groups (P < 0.05). GO and GQDs showed good biocompatibility compared to the control group by CCK8 (P > 0.05) within 3 days., Conclusion: GO and GQDs could improve the anti-caries effects of CPP-ACP, and CPP-ACP agents with GO or GQDs could be a potential option for enamel lesion management., Clinical Significance: GO and GQDs have demonstrated the potential to significantly enhance the anticaries effects of CPP-ACP. Objective: The aim of this study was to design and assess composite resin composition for patient-specific esthetic color-graded temporary veneer., Methods: Various compositions of composite structures (assorted by Ba 2 SiO 4 filler, TiO 2 pigment, and photoinitiator) were prepared via additive manufacturing with 3 s UV exposure (405 nm, 10 W/cm 2 ) per 50 µm thick layer followed by 20 min post-curing treatment after fabrication. The effect of each component on the generated color shades was observed and compared to the commonly used VITA shade guide. The coloration was explored by staining aging treatment under dry, wet, artificial saliva environments, coffee, and cola. The mechanical properties were also evaluated. Color measurement and comparison were done using a colorimeter (lightness (L*), green-red color (a*), and blue-yellow color (b*)), and the changes were calculated by CIEDE2000 (ΔE 00 ), translucency parameter (TP) and whiteness index (WI D ). The composition color analysis results were then applied to produce a color-graded temporary veneer for mimicking a natural look., Result: Mechanically, all composition result in adequate bending strength with maximum achievable strength of 111.64 MPa. At the same time, the composite color was affected by each constituent differently. The L* value, which indicates the color lightness of the composite, was considerably tuned by the TiO 2 pigment, whereas Ba 2 SiO 4 filler only triggered minor changes. Photoinitiator concentration significantly affected the yellowness, indicated by the increased b* value. Similar tendency also observed toward the calculated TP and WI D as well. Based on these evaluations, color-graded temporary veneer successfully generated, matching the VITA A3, A2, and B1 shades gradation. However, the stability of the composite color decreased at high amounts of Ba 2 SiO 4 and photoinitiator., Significance: The study presents a composition guide for fabricating temporary patient-specific color-graded veneer. Although titanium and its alloys are widely used as dental implants, they cannot induce the formation of new bone around the implant, which is a basis for the functional integrity and long-term stability of implants. This study focused on the functionalization of the titanium/titanium oxide surface as the gold standard for dental implants, with electrospun composite fibers consisting of polyvinylpyrrolidone and Ca 2+ ions. Polymer fibers as carriers of Ca 2+ ions should gradually dissolve, releasing Ca 2+ ions into the environment of the implant when it is immersed in a model electrolyte of artificial saliva. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful formation of a porous network of composite fibers on the titanium/titanium oxide surface. The mechanism of the formation of the composite fibers was investigated in detail by quantum chemical calculations at the density functional theory level based on the simulation of possible molecular interactions between Ca 2+ ions, polymer fibers and titanium substrate. During the 7-day immersion of the functionalized titanium in artificial saliva, the processes on the titanium/titanium oxide/composite fibers/artificial saliva interface were monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It can be concluded from all the results that the composite fibers formed on titanium have application potential for the development of osteoinductive and thus more biocompatible dental implants.

Statement of Problem: The effects of gastric acid on the hardness, topographic, and colorimetric properties of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramics (ZLSs) for dental restorations remain unknown., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of simulated gastric acid exposure on the microhardness, surface roughness, color stability, and relative translucency of ZLSs., Material and Methods: Two pressable ZLSs (VITA AMBRIA, VA and Celtra Press, CP) and 2 machinable ZLSs (VITA Suprinity, VS and Celtra Duo, CD)(n=64) were randomly allocated to artificial saliva (control) or gastric juice immersion groups simulating 10 and 20 years of clinical exposure. Microhardness (Hv) was measured with a Vickers hardness device, and surface roughness (Sa) was recorded with an optical profilometer. The color stability (ΔE 00 ) and relative translucency parameter (RTP) were measured with a spectrophotometer. Data for Hv, Sa, and RTP were analyzed by repeated 2-way ANOVA, and data for ΔE 00 were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA. Post hoc comparisons were obtained from Tukey HSD and Student t tests (α=.05)., Results: Machinable ZLSs exhibited greater Hv after the simulated gastric acid challenge than pressable ZLSs. Sa was significantly impacted by material type (P=.001), storage media (P=.050), and their interaction (P<.001). ΔE 00 was significantly affected by the type of simulated aging media (P<.001). After 20 years of simulated gastric acid aging, all ZLS materials surpassed the ΔE 00 perceptibility threshold but did not exceed the ΔE 00 acceptability threshold. Objectives: Baghdadite (Ca 3 ZrSi 2 O 9 ) cements of various composition have been investigated in this study regarding an application as endodontic filling materials., Methods: Cements were either obtained by mixing mechanically activated baghdadite powder with water (maBag) or by subsequently substituting the ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) component in a brushite forming calcium phosphate cement. The cements were analyzed for their mechanical performance, injectability, radiopacity, phase composition and antimicrobial properties., Results: The cements demonstrated sufficient mechanical performance with a compressive strength of ∼1 MPa (maBag) and 2.3 - 17.4 MPa (substituted calcium phosphate cement), good injectability > 80 % depending on the powder to liquid ratio and an intrinsic radiopacity of 1.13 - 2.05 mm aluminum equivalent. Immersion in artificial saliva proved their bioactivity by the formation of calcium phosphate and calcium silicate precipitates on the cement surface. The bacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus cultured on the surface of the cements was found to be similar compared to clinical standard ProRoot MTA cement or even reduced by a factor of 3 for Streptococcus mutans., Significance: In combination with their antibacterial properties, baghdadite cements are thought to have the potential to fulfil the clinical requirements for endodontic filling materials., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Objective: The study objectives were to examine the physical properties and enamel remineralization potential of fluoride (F) varnishes incorporated with arginine (Arg)., Methods: Four commercial F varnishes: 1) Duraphat®; 2) Flúor Protector®, 3) Fluor Protector S®, and 4) Fluorimax™ were supplemented with 2% w/v. Arg. The control/experimental varnishes underwent rheometric analysis to assess varnish density (δ), velocity (ν), and associated viscosity, both quantitatively (ν/δ) and qualitatively based on determined mass, volume, distance flow, and time under experimentation. The varnish wet/dry weights (at 2 h) were also analysed. Further, sound enamel specimens (T0) with artificial incipient caries-like lesions (T1) were treated with control/experimental varnishes and subjected to remineralization assay with artificial saliva for 6 h. Thereafter (T2), the specimens were characterized to estimate precipitated Ca and net enamel F uptake. Additionally, mineral density (MD) was assessed using micro-CT at T0, T1, and T2 to derive mineral gain (MG) and % remineralization for the treatment groups., Results: When Arg is incorporated, the physical properties of the F-containing varnishes undergo a significant transformation, resulting in higher density, varnish weight, dry varnish weight, and viscosity compared to their respective control varnishes (p < 0.05). Incorporating Arg-in Duraphat®, Fluor Protector S®, and Fluorimax™ significantly improved both enamel Ca precipitation and F uptake compared to the respective controls (p < 0.05). Additionally, the enamel F uptake was significantly higher with all the tested varnishes when enriched with Arg (p < 0.05). The combined data for MD, MG, and % remineralization suggests that the remineralization potential of F-varnishes significantly increased when enriched with Arg (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Incorporating Arg in inorganic F varnishes improves their physical properties and enhances the enamel remineralization potential of the varnishes., Clinical Significance: This study highlights the possibility of incorporating Arg in distinct F-source varnishes. The prevalence of xerostomia, the sensation of dry mouth, is estimated at 20 % in the general population and up to 50 % in older adults. Saliva plays different roles during bolus formation: lubrication, mixing, coating, hydration, dissolution, and comminution of food particles. This study proposes and tests artificial saliva formulations mimicking human saliva rheological and sensory perceptions. Shear and extensional rheology were assessed to select the type of formulation closest to saliva rheological characteristics. After evaluating three alternative sources, an extract simulating saliva rheology was produced from flax seeds. Friction coefficient and rheological properties, such as flow curves, relaxation times, and Trouton ratios, were compared favorably with human saliva. The sensory evaluation demonstrated that flaxseed extracts induce perceived mouth hydration, slipperiness, and adhesion exceeding that of human saliva. The flaxseed extract proposed in this can i) be used to study in vitro food oral processing and ii) pave the way to novel natural salivary substitutes to alleviate the symptoms of xerostomia., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. The assessment of the mucoadhesive properties peak mucoadhesive force (F max ) and work of mucoadhesion (W muc ) with texture analyzers is a common in vitro method for analyzing formulation capabilities. Challenges arise in selecting and standardizing experimental conditions due to various variables influencing mucoadhesion. This complexity hampers direct product performance comparisons. In our study, we explored factors (contact force and time, probe speed and mucin in artificial saliva) impacting a model formulation's mucoadhesive capacity. Using Omcilon-A®Orabase on porcine buccal mucosa, we systematically varied experimental conditions, employing a statistical approach (Central Composite Design - CCD). Three variables (contact force, contact time, probe speed) and their interactions were assessed for their impact on F max and W muc . Results showed that contact time and force positively affected F max , while only contact time influenced W muc . In the mucin artificial saliva test, a force of 0.5 N, time of 600 s, and speed of 1 mm/s yielded optimal F max (0.587 N) and W muc (0.468 N.s). Objectives: To evaluate the wear resistance of three additively manufactured dental crown materials (NextDent C&B MFH, Saremco print CROWNTEC and Bego VarseoSmile Crown) under two environmental conditions (dry and artificial saliva), two loads (49 N and 70 N) and two surface treatments (polished and glazed)., Methods: A total of 120 specimens were divided into 24 groups and tested for wear under two loads (49 N and 70 N), surface treatment (polished or glazed), and environment (dry or submerged in artificial saliva). All samples underwent reciprocating wear testing at 1 Hz using a wear simulator, replicating 48 months of In Vivo conditions with a stainless-steel ball as the antagonist. The coefficient of friction (CoF), surface roughness, volumetric and vertical wear loss were measured and statistically analysed. Confocal microscopy assessed the surface properties of crown materials and the antagonists., Results: The NextDent material demonstrated the most homogenous wear, with relatively low vertical and volumetric loss across all groups (p < 0.004). NextDent and Bego materials performed similarly in artificial saliva regardless of the load type (p > 1.000). The CoF remained below 0.3 for all groups. All groups exhibited significant increases in surface roughness after testing, however, this did not correlate with an increase in the CoF. Confocal analysis revealed material deformities due to load and notable scratch marks on the stainless-steel antagonists., Conclusion: It was found that all investigated addtively manufactured materials can be suggested for provisional use. Both vertical loss and volumetric loss results should be included for material evaluation. CoF and surface roughness should be implemented into wear evaluation., Clinical Significance: This study highlights the practical value of additively manufactured dental crown materials, particularly for provisional restorations. Objectives: This in vitro study examined the marginal integrity of experimental composite materials doped with bioactive glass (BG)., Materials and Methods: Class-II MOD cavities were prepared and restored with one of the following composite materials: a commercial composite material as a reference (Filtek Supreme XTE), an experimental composite doped with BG 45S5 (C-20), and an experimental composite doped with a fluoride-containing BG (F-20). Six experimental groups (n = 8) were used, as each of the three composites was applied with (+) or without (-) a universal adhesive (Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose). All specimens were subjected to thermocycling (10,000 x, 5-55 °C) and then additionally stored in artificial saliva for eight weeks. Scanning electron micrographs of the mesial and the distal box were taken at three time points (initial, after thermocycling, and after eight weeks of storage in artificial saliva). The margins were classified as "continuous" and "non-continuous" and the percentage of continuous margins (PCM) was statistically analyzed (α = 0.05)., Results: In most experimental groups, thermocycling led to a significant decrease in PCM, while the additional 8-week aging had no significant effect. F-20 + performed significantly better (p = 0.005) after 8 weeks storage in artificial saliva than the reference material with adhesive, while no statistically significant differences were observed at the other two time points. C-20 + exhibited significantly better PCM than the reference material with adhesive after thermocycling (p = 0.026) and after 8 weeks (p = 0.003)., Conclusions: Overall, the experimental composites with BG showed at least as good marginal adaptation as the commercial reference, with an indication of possible re-sealing of marginal gaps., Clinical Relevance: Maintaining or improving the marginal integrity of composite restorations is important to prevent microleakage and its likely consequences such as pulp irritation and secondary caries., (© 2024. This study evaluated the effect of fluoride varnishes containing micrometric or nanosized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) on dentin erosive wear in vitro. Bovine root dentin blocks were selected by surface hardness and randomly divided into five experimental groups/varnishes (n = 20/group): placebo, 5% sodium fluoride (NaF); 5% NaF+5% micrometric TMP; 5% NaF+2.5% nanosized TMP; and 5% NaF+5% nanosized TMP. Half of the surface of all blocks received a single application of the assigned varnish, with subsequent immersion in artificial saliva for 6 h. Varnishes were then removed and the blocks were immersed in citric acid (90 s, 4×/day, 5 days). After each erosive cycle, ten blocks of each group were immersed in a placebo dentifrice for 15 s (ERO), while the other ten blocks were subjected to abrasion by brushing (ERO+ABR). Dentin erosive wear was assessed by profilometry. Data were submitted to 2-way ANOVA and to the Holm-Sidak test (p<0.05). Dentin erosive wear was significantly higher for ERO+ABR than for ERO for all varnishes. TMP-containing varnishes promoted superior effects against dentin erosive wear compared with 5% NaF alone; and 5% nanosized TMP led to the lowest wear among all varnishes. In conclusion, the addition of TMP to conventional fluoride varnish (i.e., varnish containing only NaF) enhanced its protective effects against bovine root dentin erosion and erosion+abrasion. Additionally, the use of 5% nanosized TMP led to superior effects in comparison to 5% micrometric TMP, both for erosion and erosion+abrasion in vitro.

Aim: This study evaluated effects of various solutions on color stability and surface hardness of a nanohybrid dental composite in simulated oral environments., Materials and Methods: Sixty-four composite disks were fabricated and randomly allocated into eight groups ( n = 8 per group): Artificial saliva (AS), Biotene (B), passion fruit juice (PFJ), orange juice (OJ), Sprite (S), Coca-Cola (CO), apple cider vinegar (ACV), and cranberry juice (CJ). Specimens were immersed in respective solutions at 37°C for 28 days. Surface microhardness was assessed using Vickers microhardness test, and color alterations were quantified using SpectroShade Micro spectrophotometer. Measurements were taken 24 hours after initial polymerization and after 28-day immersion period. Statistical analysis was performed using mixed model ANOVA., Results: After 28 days, specimens exhibited significant changes in microhardness and color. Polished surfaces showed microhardness decreases of 21.9-35.5%, with ACV and CJ causing largest reductions. Non-polished surfaces unexpectedly showed increased microhardness (11.2-17.4%). Color changes were more pronounced on polished surfaces, with CO and CJ causing maximum alterations. Statistical analysis revealed significant interactions between surface treatment, staining media, and immersion time ( p < 0.05)., Conclusion: All experimental groups demonstrated significant changes, highlighting composite materials' susceptibility to environmental factors. Aim: The aim of the study was to compare the surface roughness and microhardness of bulk-fill composite and nanohybrid composite resin after exposure to three different beverages at different time intervals., Methodology: In this study, 60 composite discs each for bulk fill and nanohybrid, of dimensions 10 mm × 2 mm were made. Both composites were randomly divided into four subgroups, i.e., 15 samples each for artificial saliva, tea, coffee, and soft drinks which were further subdivided into five samples for three time intervals. Composite resin discs were immersed in beverages for 4 min in 24 h for 7, 15, and 30 days. All samples were evaluated for surface roughness and microhardness before and after immersion., Results: Both the composites showed a significant increase in surface roughness in all the beverages with maximum change in surface roughness observed in nanohybrid composite resin immersed in soft drinks. Furthermore, the microhardness of both the composites was decreased significantly in all beverages with maximum change in microhardness observed in nanohybrid composite resin immersed in soft drinks., Conclusions: Bulk-fill composite resin has better resistance to surface roughness and higher microhardness as compared to nanohybrid. Objective: Colour stability is important in the long-term aesthetic success of restorative materials and is affected by both internal and external factors. Internal discolourations are due to the properties of the restorative materials. External discolourations can be associated with frequent consumption of food and beverages and the use of suspensions or syrups containing colourants/additives. Fluoride varnish application has an important place in preventive dentistry. The purpose of the research was to examine the protective effect of fluoride varnish application on the colour change on polyacid-modified composite resin restorative materials caused by the use of various paediatric drugs., Methods: Two hundred ten discs were prepared from polyacid-modified composite resin material and divided into two groups: flouride varnish was applied to one group and flouride varnish was not applied to the other group. The groups were further divided into seven subgroups and the samples were kept in artificial saliva, amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, cefuroxime axetil, clarithromycin, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and iron supplement drug solutions. The colour change values of the discs were measured using a spectrophotometer device before immersion in the drug solutions and on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days after the immersion. The obtained data were calculated and statistically evaluated using IBM SPSS V23 software., Results: It was found that the application of fluoride varnish in the iron supplement drug group prevented the colour change of the polyacid-modified composite resins for 28 days. In the amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, cefuroxime axetil, and paracetamol groups, the fluoride varnish did not prevent colour change in the polyacid-modified composite resin restorative materials at the end of the 14th day., Conclusion: It is thought that fluoride varnish application may be beneficial as a preservative in the colour change of polyacid-modified composite resins due to the use of various paediatric drugs, and this protective feature may be effective for a specific period of time., (© 2024. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the surface roughness and friction of different orthodontic archwires after exposure to salbutamol sulphate inhalation, an anti-asthmatic medication., Methods: Orthodontic archwires (stainless-steel [StSt], nickel-titanium [NiTi], beta-titanium [β-Ti], and copper-NiTi [Cu-NiTi]) were equally divided into two groups. The exposed groups were subjected to 20 mg salbutamol sulphate for 21 days and kept in artificial saliva. The control groups were only kept in artificial saliva. Surface changes were visualized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average surface roughness (Ra) was evaluated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and friction resistance forces were assessed using a universal testing machine. Statistical analyses were performed using t-tests and ANOVA followed by post hoc tests., Results: Salbutamol sulphate did not change the surface roughness of StSt and NiTi archwires (p > .05). However, the change in the surfaces of β-Ti and Cu-NiTi archwires was significant (p < .001). The frictional forces of exposed StSt, NiTi, and Cu-NiTi archwires did not change (p > .05). However, the frictional forces of β-Ti archwires increased significantly after exposure to salbutamol sulphate (p = .021). Brushing with fluoride after exposure to salbutamol sulphate increased the frictional forces of β-Ti only (p = .002)., Conclusions: Salbutamol sulphate inhalation significantly affected the surface texture of β-Ti and Cu-NiTi orthodontic archwires and increased the friction of β-Ti archwires. These deteriorating effects were not detected on the surface of StSt and NiTi archwires. Saliva substitutes with enhanced dentin remineralization properties were expected to help manage caries progression in patients with xerostomia. This in vitro study examined the rheological properties and remineralization action of experimental saliva substitutes containing propolis extract and aloe vera extract on demineralized dentin. Four experimental saliva substitutes were formulated with varying concentrations of propolis extract (P) and aloe vera extract (A) were prepared. A commercial saliva substitute (Biotene Oral Rinse) was used as a commercial comparison. The rheological properties and viscosity of these materials were measured using a strain-controlled rheometer (n = 3). The remineralizing actions of saliva substitutes on demineralized dentin after 2 weeks were determined using ATR-FTIR and SEM-EDX (n = 8). The results were expressed as a percentage increase in the mineral-to-matrix ratio. Biotene demonstrated a significantly higher viscosity (13.5 mPa·s) than experimental saliva substitutes (p<0.05). The addition of extracts increased the viscosity of the saliva substitutes from 4.7 mPa·s to 5.2 mPa·s. All formulations showed minimal shear thinning behavior, which was the viscoelastic properties of natural saliva. The formulation containing 5 wt% of propolis exhibited the highest increase in the median mineral-to-matrix ratio (25.48%). The SEM-EDX analysis revealed substantial mineral precipitation in demineralized dentin, especially in formulations with 5 wt% or 2.5 wt% of propolis. The effect of the aloe vera extract was minimal. The addition of propolis and aloe vera extracts increased the viscosity of saliva substitutes. the addition of propolis for 2.5 or 5 wt% to saliva substitutes increased mineral apatite precipitation and tubule occlusion. Background: Releasing of metal ions might implicate in allergic reaction as a negative subsequent of the corrosion of Stainless Steel (SS304) orthodontic wires. The aim of this study was to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zinc-coated (Zn-coated) SS orthodontic wires., Methods: Zinc coating was applied on SS wires by PVD method. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Potentiodynamic polarization tests and Tafel analysis methods were used to predict the corrosion behavior of Zn-coated and uncoated SS wires in both neutral and acidic environments., Results: The values of E corr ,i corr and R ct , which were the electrochemical corrosion characteristics, reported better corrosion behavior of Zn-coated SS wires against uncoated ones in both artificial saliva and fluoride-containing environments. Experimental results of the Tafel plot analyses were consistent with that of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses for both biological solutions., Conclusion: Applying Zn coating on bare SS orthodontic wire by PVD method might increase the corrosion resistance of the underlying stainless-steel substrate., (© 2024. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different finishing and polishing systems on the surface roughness of a resin composite subjected to simulated saliva-, acid-, and enzyme-induced degradation., Methods: 160 specimens (n= 40) were fabricated with Filtek Z350 XT nanofilled composite and analyzed for average surface roughness (Ra). The specimens were finished and polished using: AD - Al₂O₃-impreginated rubberized discs (medium, fine, and superfine grit, Sof-Lex); SD - silicon carbide and Al₂O₃-impregnated rubberized discs (coarse, medium and fine grit, Jiffy,); MB - 12- and 30-multiblade burs. The control group (CT) (n= 40) comprised specimens with a Mylar-strip-created surface. Specimens from each group were immersed in 1 mL of one of the degradation methods (n= 10): artificial saliva (ArS: pH 6.75), cariogenic challenge (CaC: pH 4.3), erosive challenge (ErC: 0.05M citric acid, pH 2.3) or enzymatic challenge (EzC: artificial saliva with 700 µg/mL of albumin, pH 6.75). The immersion period simulated a time frame of 180 days. Ra measurements were also performed at the post-polishing and post-degradation time points. The data were evaluated by three-way ANOVA for repeated measures and the Tukey tests., Results: There was significant interaction between the finishing/polishing system and the degradation method (P= 0.001). AD presented the greatest smoothness, followed by SD. After degradation, CT, AD and SD groups became significantly rougher, but not the MB group, which presented no difference in roughness before or after degradation. CT and AD groups showed greater roughness in CaC, ErC and EzC than in ArS. The SD group showed no difference in roughness when the specimens were polished with CaC, EzC or ArS, but those treated with ErC had greater roughness. Introduction: Wet oral environment may have deleterious effects on performance of the composites due to influences of water sorption and solubility. The study evaluated the hydrolytic degradation caused because of water sorption and solubility of silorane and methacrylate-based dental composites., Methods: Ten disc samples (2 mm × 10 mm) were prepared. Samples were analyzed for water solubility and sorption according to ISO 4049:2000 regulations and tested for mass gain or loss following immersion in water or in artificial saliva at 1 day, 15 days, and 30 days period. Student's 't' test, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Tukey's post-hoc tests determined statistical significance of the experimental results with global significance set at P = 0.05., Results: Considerable sorption and solubility was observed with time in both materials on immersion. Silorane composites showed lower water sorption and solubility than methacrylate-based composite (MBC). Objectives: This in vitro work investigates the potential of ostrich eggshell as a substitute for extracted human teeth in preliminary screening studies on dental erosion. Additionally, it aims to demonstrate the potential of ostrich eggshell compared to human enamel in evaluating the efficacy of a preventive agent in protecting against dental erosion, using an artificial mouth model., Methods: The experiment utilized 96 erosion testing specimens from each substrate, human enamel, and ostrich eggshell. The specimens were subjected to six different experimental regimens of increasing erosive challenge, simulating the consumption of an acidic drink. The acidic drink was delivered at a consistent volume and duration range. Both artificially stimulated and unstimulated saliva flowed throughout the experimental regimens. Surface hardness was measured using a Through-Indenter Viewing hardness tester with a Vickers diamond, while surface profiling was done using a surface contacting profilometer with a diamond stylus. An automated chemistry analyzer system was used to detect calcium and phosphate ions., Results: The study found that ostrich eggshell specimens demonstrated predictable surface loss, hardness drop, and ion loss due to the acidic challenge. Meanwhile, enamel appeared to fall short in terms of surface hardness predictability. The transient hardness loss phase, which manifests as an overlooked decrease in surface hardness despite significant ion and structural loss, may explain this phenomenon., Conclusions: The experiment showed that assessing surface loss is essential in addition to hardness testing, particularly as certain experimental conditions may produce a false perception of tissue recovery despite the actual surface loss. By analyzing the response of ostrich eggshell specimens to erosive challenges, researchers were able to identify an "overlooked" reduction in hardness in enamel specimens. The differences in the structure, chemical composition, and biological response to erosion in the presence of artificial saliva between enamel and ostrich eggshell could explain their distinct behaviors., (© 2023 The Authors. The aim of this study was to assess the remineralization efficacy of chicken eggshell-derived nano-hydroxyapatite (CEnHAp) combined with phytosphingosine (PHS) on artificially induced dentinal lesions. PHS was commercially procured whereas CEnHAp was synthesized using microwave-irradiation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (HRSEM-EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A total of 75 pre-demineralized coronal dentin specimens were randomly treated with one of the following test agents (n = 15 each): artificial saliva (AS), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), CEnHAp, PHS, and CEnHAp-PHS under pH cycling for 7, 14, and 28 days. Vickers microhardness indenter, HRSEM-EDX, and micro-Raman spectroscopy methods were used to assess the mineral changes in the treated dentin samples. Data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman's two-way analyses of variance (p < 0.05). HRSEM and TEM analysis depicted irregular spherical structure of the prepared CEnHAp with a particle size of 20-50 nm. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ca, P, Na and Mg ions. The XRD pattern showed the characteristic crystalline peaks for hydroxyapatite and calcium carbonate that are present in the prepared CEnHAp. Dentin treated with CEnHAp-PHS revealed highest microhardness values along with complete tubular occlusion compared to other groups at all test time intervals (p < 0.05). Specimens treated with CEnHAp showed increased remineralization than those treated with CPP-ACP followed by PHS and AS groups. The intensity of mineral peaks, as observed in the EDX and micro-Raman spectra, confirmed these findings. Further, the molecular conformation of the collagen's polypeptide chains, and amide-I and CH 2 peaks attained peak intensities in dentin treated with CEnHAp-PHS and PHS whereas other groups revealed poor stability of collagen bands. Diagnosing oral diseases at an early stage may lead to better preventive treatments, thus reducing treatment burden and costs. This paper introduces a systematic design of a microfluidic compact disc (CD) consisting of six unique chambers that run simultaneously from sample loading, holding, mixing and analysis. In this study, the electrochemical property changes between real saliva and artificial saliva mixed with three different types of mouthwashes (i.e. chlorhexidine-, fluoride- and essential oil (Listerine)-based mouthwashes) were investigated using electrical impedance analysis. Given the diversity and complexity of patient's salivary samples, we investigated the electrochemical impedance property of healthy real saliva mixed with different types of mouthwashes to understand the different electrochemical property which could be a foundation for diagnosis and monitoring of oral diseases. On the other hand, electrochemical impedance property of artificial saliva, a commonly used moisturizing agent and lubricant for the treatment of xerostomia or dry mouth syndrome was also studied. The findings indicate that artificial saliva and fluoride-based mouthwash showed higher conductance values compared to real saliva and two other different types of mouthwashes. The aim of this study was to examine a short-term fluoride ions release from selected materials - resin-modified glass ionomer -Vitremer (3M ESPE) and nanohybrid universal composite - Tetric EvoCeram (IvoclarVivadent). Release of fluoride ions [µg/mm2 /h] from Tetric EvoCeram and Vitremer into nine environments (artificial saliva - AS, deionized water and 0.9% NaCl) differing in composition of the solution and pH was determined. Six samples were prepared for each solution. In the short-term study, the measurements were taken after 1, 3, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours. The cumulative values as well as levels of fluoride ions released at concrete time intervals were compared. Within 7 days (168 hours), both materials showed variable levels of fluoride ions release. The highest value of fluoride ions release from nanohybrid Tetric EvoCeram material was reported in deionized water (8) after 24 hours (1.550 ± 0.014 [µg/mm2/h]) and the lowest value was read in the artificial saliva AS pH 7.5 (5) after 1 hour (0.022 ± 0.001 [µg/mm2/h]). What's more, the highest value of F- release from Vitremer was found in deionized water (8) after 168 hours of immersion (24.021 ± 2.280 [µg/mm2/h]) and the lowest value was in the artificial saliva AS (without Ca2+) pH 4.5 (6) (0.303 ± 0.249 [µg/mm2/h]) after 168 hours. Cumulated release of F- after 7 days was notably higher from resin- modified glass ionomer material - Vitremer in all artificial saliva solutions (1-7) which imitated the environment of oral cavity. Therefore, we can assume that Vitremer has better remineralization potential and it may constitute a more effective method of tooth decay prevention.

In this study, the corrosion behavior and mechanism of Ti-6Al-4V in artificial saliva with Candida albicans were investigated using electrochemical and surface analysis techniques. Fluorescence microscopy (FM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) showed that C. albicans could easily adsorb on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy to form non-dense biofilm. The non-compact biofilm provided necessary conditions for pitting corrosion on Ti-6Al-4V alloys by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation. The potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that C. albicans significantly reduced the corrosion resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) results indicated that C. albicans biofilm promoted electron transfer from the anodic sites to cathodic depolarizer during the corrosion process, showing that the role of oral fungi must be considered when evaluating the performance of oral materials. Objective: We aimed at evaluating some chemical-physical properties of artificial saliva substitutes easily available on the E.U. market, such as viscosity, pH, buffering capacity, superficial tension, density and spinnbarkeit and to compare the results with human natural saliva bibliographic data., Materials and Methods: Based on the easy availability on the market, twelve artificial saliva solutions in liquid formulation were analyzed. Kinematic viscosity (cSt) was determined using a micro-Ubbelohde model capillary viscosimeter (ViscoClock, SCHOOT-GERATE Mainz, Germany). Dynamic viscosity (mPas) was determined, through a simple multiplication between density (g/cm3) and kinematic viscosity of each solution. pH analyses were carried out at room temperature using a pH-meter (Mettler Toledo®- Five Easy, Columbus, OH, USA). Spinnbarkeit analysis was performed by a self-owned instrument built for the purpose., Results: The median density value, obtained from the cohort of artificial saliva substitutes, was 1.036 g/cm3. The median value of the kinematic viscosity was 8.984 cSt. The median spinnbarkeit value was 3.2 mm and the median pH value was 6.29. In this study we found an almost linear correlation between the kinematic viscosity and spinnbarkeit values of the artificial saliva substitutes evaluated., Conclusions: Saliva substitutes should be as faithful as possible to the characteristics of human saliva, in order to completely replace its functions in the oral cavity. Nevertheless, despite several R&D efforts, it is difficult to reproduce all the different features that belongs to natural saliva in one device. Therefore, it would be desirable to create more products reproducing saliva with various rheological characteristics in respect of the main salivary functions such as: chewing, speaking and tissue coating.

In this study, diffusion coefficients of ammonium vanadate at tracer concentrations in artificial saliva with and without sodium fluoride, at different pH values, were measured using an experimental model based on the Taylor dispersion technique. Ternary mutual diffusion coefficients ( D 11 , D 22 , D 12 , and D 21 ) for four aqueous systems {NH 4 VO 3 (component 1) + β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) (component 2),} {NH 4 VO 3 (component 1) + β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) (component 2)}, {NH 4 VO 3 (component 1) + sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) (component 2)} and {NH 4 VO 3 (component 1) + sodium hyaluronate (NaHy) (component 2)} at 25.00 °C were also measured by using the same technique. These data showed that diffusion of ammonium vanadate was strongly affected in all aqueous media studied. Furthermore, a significant coupled diffusion of this salt and β-CD was observed through the non-zero values of the cross-diffusion coefficients, D 12 , allowing us to conclude that there is a strong interaction between these two components. This finding is very promising considering the removal, from the oral cavity, of vanadium resulting from tribocorrosion of Ti-6Al-4V prosthetic devices.

High nitrogen nickel-free austenitic stainless steels (HNSs) have great potentials to be used in dentistry owing to its exceptional mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study, HNSs with nitrogen of 0.88 wt% and 1.08 wt% displayed much lower maximum pit depths than 316L stainless steel (SS) after 21 d of immersion in abiotic artificial saliva (2.2 μm and 1.7 μm vs. 4.5 μm). Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) evaluations revealed that Streptococcus mutans biofilms led to much severer corrosion of 316L SS than HNSs. Corrosion current densities of HNSs were two orders of magnitude lower than that of 316L SS after incubation of 7 d (37.5 nA/cm 2 and 29.9 nA/cm 2 vs. 5.63 μA/cm 2 ). The pitting potentials of HNSs were at least 550 mV higher than that of 316L SS in the presence of S. mutans, confirming the better MIC resistance of HNSs. Cytotoxicity assay confirmed that HNSs were not toxic to MC3T3-E1 cells and allowed better sessile cell growth on them than on 316L SS. Xerostomia, known as dry mouth, is caused by decreased salivary flow. Treatment with lubricating oral rinses provides temporary relief of dry mouth discomfort; however, it remains unclear how their composition affects mineralized dental tissues. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the effects of common components in xerostomia oral rinses on biomimetic apatite with varying carbonate contents. Carbonated apatite was synthesized and exposed to one of the following solutions for 72 hours at varying pHs: water-based, phosphorus-containing (PBS), mucin-like containing (MLC), or fluoride-containing (FC) solutions. Post-exposure results indicated that apatite mass decreased irrespective of pH and solution composition, while solution buffering was pH dependent. Raman and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the addition of phosphorus, mucin-like molecules, and fluoride in solution decreases mineral carbonate levels and changed the lattice spacing and crystallinity of bioapatite, indicative of dissolution/recrystallization processes. The mineral recrystallized into a less-carbonated apatite in the PBS and MLC solutions, and into fluorapatite in FC. Tap water did not affect the apatite lattice structure suggesting formation of a labile carbonate surface layer on apatite. These results reveal that solution composition can have varied and complex effects on dental mineral beyond dissolution, which can have long term consequences on mineral solubility and mechanics. A thermo-responsive injectable bioactive glass (BAG) that has the ability to set at body temperature was prepared using pluronic F127 and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as the carrier. The injectable composite has the advantage to fill irregular shape implantation sites and quick setting at body temperature. The structural and morphological analysis of injectable BAG before and after setting was done by using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The effect of an ultrasonic scaler for a quick setting of injectable BAG was also investigated. The ultrasonic scaler sets the BAG formulation three-folds faster than at body temperature and homogenized the dispersion. The in vitro bio-adhesion was studied in the bovine tooth in both artificial saliva and deionized water for periodic time intervals, i.e., day 7, 30, 90, and 180, which confirmed the apatite layer formation. The mineral density analysis was used to differentiate the newly formed apatite with tooth apatite. In the MTT assay, the experimental material showed continuous proliferation and cell growth. This indicated that injectable hydrogel promoted cell growth, facilitated proliferation, and had no cytotoxic effect. The selective laser melting of Ti6Al4V would induce definite changes in the microstructure that may affect its corrosion properties. Microstructural examination showed the formation of relatively thin beta (β) lamella in selective laser melted (SLM) Ti6Al4V compared to wrought Ti6Al4V. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) analysis confirmed the presence of alpha and beta phases in both SLM and wrought Ti6Al4V. However, the higher concentration of the β phase in SLM Ti6Al4V compared to wrought Ti6Al4V was evident in the microstructure. As candidate dental implant materials, the corrosion behavior of both SLM and wrought Ti6Al4V was assessed in artificial saliva (AS) and deionized water (DI) containing various species i.e. fluoride (F), calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and lactic acid (LA). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization analysis was carried out to estimate the corrosion behavior of SLM and wrought Ti6Al4V at room temperature. SLM Ti6Al4V offered better corrosion resistance than wrought Ti6Al4V in all solutions at pH > 6. However, wrought Ti6Al4V comparatively presented high corrosion resistance in AS + LA, DI + CaCl 2 and DI + LA solutions (pH < 6). Saliva plays a crucial role in oral cavity. In addition to its buffering and moisturizing properties, saliva fulfills many biofunctional requirements, including antibacterial activity that is essential to assure proper oral microbiota growth. Due to numerous extra- and intra-systemic factors, there are many disorders of its secretion, leading to oral dryness. Saliva substitutes used in such situations must meet many demands. This study was design to evaluate the effect of core-shell magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) adding (gold-coated and aminosilane-coated nanoparticles NPs) on antimicrobial (microorganism adhesion, biofilm formation), rheological (viscosity, viscoelasticity) and physicochemical (pH, surface tension, conductivity) properties of three commercially available saliva formulations. Upon the addition of NPs (20 µg/mL), antibacterial activity of artificial saliva was found to increase against tested microorganisms by 20% to 50%. NPs, especially gold-coated ones, decrease the adhesion of Gram-positive and fungal cells by 65% and Gram-negative bacteria cells by 45%. Moreover, the addition of NPs strengthened the antimicrobial properties of tested artificial saliva, without influencing their rheological and physicochemical properties, which stay within the range characterizing the natural saliva collected from healthy subjects.

Textured biomaterials have been extensively used in biomedical engineering to modulate mammalian and bacterial cell adhesion and proliferation, implant integration with human body and infection prevention. However, the tribological implications of texturing under wet physiological conditions have not been well quantified. This study aimed to characterize the tribological properties of micropore-textured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) under physiological conditions and investigate the effect of adsorbed lubricious molecules on friction. In this study, untextured and micropore-textured PDMS surfaces were slid against curved smooth glass surfaces under the contact pressures of 10-400 kPa, sliding speeds of 0.1-5 mm/s in aqueous solutions with the viscosity of 1-1000 mPa·s. Reconstituted human whole saliva (RHWS) at pH 7 and porcine gastric mucin (PGM) at both pH 2 and 7 were used as lubricious coatings on PDMS. While the micropore-texturing delayed the transition of lubrication regimes, it increased the coefficient of friction (COF). Although RHWS and PGM coatings decreased the COF significantly, the protein coatings could not help the COF of micropore-textured surfaces getting lower than that of untextured surfaces. In the present study, we have developed a capacitance electrochemical biosensor based on silicon nitride substrate (Si3N4/SiO2/Si[P]/Al) for Tumour Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α) cytokines detection. Micro-contact printing, Fluorescence microscopy characterization and contact angle measurement (CAM) were carried out during the bio-functionalization of the biosensor surface. Mott-Schottky analyses were applied for TNF-α detection within the range of 1 pg/mL to 30 pg/mL in which the immunosensor has exhibited a good linearity, a sensitivity of 4 mV.pM -1 and 4.4 mV.pM -1 in PBS and artificial saliva (AS) respectively. While the LOD was found at 0.38 pg/mL and 1 pg/mL in PBS and AS respectively. The developed immunosensor has also demonstrated a high and good selectivity for TNF-α detection in human AS when compared to other interferences like Cortisol and Interleukin-10. A porous and hydrophilic sorbent material was used in an extraction system, assisted by electric fields, for the extraction of cocaine in saliva and subsequent determination by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography associated with sequential triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The cellulose-based material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The time and voltage variables applied in the extraction process were investigated through a Doehlert experimental design, and with the best conditions found (35min and 300 V) some validation parameters were evaluated. The established working range was 1-100 μg L -1 (R 2  > 0.99), and the detection and quantification limits determined were 0.3 and 0.8 μg L -1 , respectively. Recoveries from 80 to 115% and coefficient of variation ≤15 and 16% for intra-day and inter-day assays, respectively, were obtained for sample concentrations of LOQ, 5, 25, and 75 μg L -1 , indicating satisfactory accuracy and precision for the proposed method. In addition, the method presented no matrix effect, and the extraction efficiency was between 56 and 70%. The purpose of this study was to develop a new solid paediatric formulation for propranolol hydrochloride (PR). This drug is used to treat various paediatric diseases, and recently received clearance to treat haemangioma. However, PR has a bitter salty taste that does not facilitate high rates of compliance among children, especially in liquid formulations. In addition, the solid formulations are designed for adults and often their dosage is not suitable for children that require a flexible dose based on their weight. Therefore, matrix microbeads of EUDRAGIT® E PO containing PR were manufactured to overcome these limitations. Nine different samples were prepared using the prilling-congealing technique with high yield. Using 2 nozzles, 300 and 450 μm (code n), the diameters obtained of microbeads (from 333 to 699 μm) were homogenous and appropriate to be swallowed by children. In this study, the ratio drug:matrix for the microbeads was also examined in detail: 1:25 (F 1 ), 1:15 (F 2 ) and 1:10 (F 3 ) in aqueous and tert-butyl alcohol/aqueous (code t) media. Most of the examined microbeads were characterized by high percentage of encapsulation efficiency (22-100%) and drug loading (22-77 mg of drug per g of matrix) effective for the administration of low and high doses of PR. SEM analysis revealed a matrix with a radial or a spongy structure, with numerous pores that generated soft floating microbeads in aqueous solution. Release studies confirmed a low release and dissolution of the drug in artificial saliva, mainly F 1n  > F 1  > F 2nt , and a prompt dissolution in simulated gastric media. Finally, electronic tongue measurements revealed the ability of these formulations to mask the bitter drug taste, especially for the sample with a ratio 1:25 (F 1n and F 1 ). These samples were chemically and physically stable for six months. The electrochemical properties of CoCrMo alloy immersed in different artificial saliva with or without Ca 2+ and albumin were studied by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PP), and meanwhile the microstructures features, phase identification and chemical composition of the alloy were analyzed by SEM, EDS, XRD and RA-IR to further understand the electrochemical behavior of the alloy. The results indicated that the self-passivation behavior of the alloy occurred universally and was obviously distinct with each other in different acidic artificial saliva. No phase transformation was observed and the oxide layer and corrosion products exhibited amorphous nature. There was an obvious complexation of the adsorbed albumin with the alloy, and the adsorption capacity of albumin increased with the prolongation of immersion time. The adsorbed albumin presenting black stripped spots had a certain inhibition to the formation of passivation film, and Ca 2+ in saliva promoted the further adsorption of albumin as an intermediate bridge, going against the improvement of the corrosion resistance of passivation film/alloy system. In addition, the passivation state of the alloy surface was changed by different methods to investigate the adsorption behavior of albumin and its influence on the further passivation behavior in depth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different calcium phosphates (CaPs) on the physical, biological, and remineralizing properties of experimental resin-based sealants (RBSs). Triethylene-glycol dimethacrylate (90wt%) and bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (10wt%) were used to produce resin-based sealants. Hydroxyapatite (SHAp), α-tricalcium phosphate (Sα-TCP) and octacalcium phosphate (SOCP) were added to the sealants in a 10wt% concentration. One group without CaPs was used as the control group (SCG). The degree of conversion (DC) was assessed with Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, whereas cytotoxicity was tested with the HaCaT keratinocyte cell line. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was used to assess the mechanical strength of the experimental RBSs. Sealed enamel was used for colorimetric assay. Mineral deposition was assessed with Raman spectroscopy after 7, 14, and 28 days of sample immersion in artificial saliva. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the surface morphology after 28 days of immersion. The addition of 10wt% of fillers significantly reduced the DC of sealants. SOCP groups showed reduced cell viability. Higher UTS was found for Sα-TCP and SHAp. The color analysis showed that SGC and demineralized teeth presented higher mismatches with the sound tissue. Mineral deposition was observed for SHAp and Sα-TCP after 7 days, with increased phosphate content and mineral deposits for SHAp after 28 days. RBS with the addition of 10% HAp promoted increased mineralization in vitro after 28 days, and did not affect cell viability, DC, mechanical properties, or RBS color in the enamel.

The sensation of dry mouth also referred to as xerostomia is becoming increasingly common worldwide. Current treatment strategies include topical agents, sialagogues and saliva substitutes. The latter have been reported to be ineffective as special physicochemical features of natural saliva have so far been ignored (e.g., buffer capacity, osmolality, etc.). The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate the most relevant physicochemical properties of three products frequently used in the clinics and compare them to unstimulated whole saliva (UWS). Sialin-Sigma®, Glandomed® and Xylitol CVS Health TM Dry Mouth Spray were characterized regarding their pH, osmolality, electrical conductivity, buffer capacity, rheological behaviour, microstructure, surface tension and wettability and compared to UWS. The influence of residual saliva was examined under consideration of the conditions of xerostomia to assess whether the quantity given in the instruction for use is appropriate. All three products showed significant differences to UWS regarding the values received. Only Xylitol CVS Health TM Dry Mouth Spray showed a comparable wettability. It could be further determined that the recommended doses were too low. We measured the push-out and diametral tensile strength of dental restorative composites following aging under environmental conditions relevant to the oral cavity; air (A), artificial saliva (AS), acidified (50 mM CH 3 COOH, pH = 4.7) artificial saliva (AS + HAc), and AS with esterase enzyme (AS + ENZ). Cylindrical test specimens (6.3 mm diameter by 5.1 mm long) were prepared by placing 0.3 g of nanofilled composite in an epoxy ring and cured. Twenty samples were aged in each environment for 163-186 days at 37°C. The push-out strengths (mean ± standard error of the mean [SEM], in MPa) for specimens were: A-2.4 ± 0.2, AS-7.3 ± 0.5, AS + HAc-7.2 ± 0.9, and AS + ENZ-6.0 ± 0.6. Following the push-out test, the diametral tensile strength and elasticity were immediately determined. The diametral tensile strengths (mean ± SEM, in MPa) for specimens were: A-54.0 ± 1.6, AS-31.4 ± 1.3, AS + HAc-34.3 ± 1.2, and AS + ENZ-22.5 ± 0.7. The push-out strength was lowest for the A environment due to shrinkage of the composite. The push-out strength increased significantly as water diffused into the specimens (AS and AS + HAc) but decreased significantly in the enzyme environment (AS + ENZ). The diametral tensile strength was highest for specimens in the A environment, which was significantly higher than both the AS and AS + HAc specimens and > 2× higher than the AS + ENZ specimens. The results indicated that a water environment (with or without acid) caused a significant decrease in the mechanical properties of this composite, but the greatest decrease was seen in water with esterase. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the corrosion resistance of galvanically coupled SLA and anodized implant surfaces with a Co-Cr alloy., Materials and Methods: Three groups were included in this study. The first (SLA) was composed of SLA implants (Institut Straumann, Basel, Switzerland), the second (ANO) of NobelReplace® (Nobel Biocare, Göteborg, Sweden), and the third (MIX) of both implant systems combined. All groups were assembled with a single Co-Cr superstructure. Electrochemical testing included open-circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, and chronoamperometric current-time measurements. The quantitative results (EOCP, ECORR, ICORR, EPROT, RP, and ICA) were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc multiple comparison test (α = 0.05)., Results: All the aforementioned parameters showed statistically significant differences apart from ECORR and EPROT. The evaluation of qualitative and quantitative results showed that although SLA had higher corrosion resistance compared with ANO, it had less resistance to pitting corrosion. This means that SLA showed increased resistance to uniform corrosion but less resistance if pitting corrosion was initiated. Organophosphate (OP) pesticides are highly toxic substances and are frequently represented as poisons. In order to qualify and quantify the selected OP pesticides (methyl paraoxon, ethyl paraoxon, methyl parathion, fenitrothion, and ethyl parathion), micellar electrokinetic chromatography and short-end injection were investigated. This is the first time that this combination has been used to separate OP pesticides. A capillary with 8.5 cm effective length was used, and the analytes were separated within 2.1 min. Separation conditions including buffer (type, pH, and concentration), sodium dodecyl sulfate concentration, and separation voltage were optimized. The limit of detection (LOD) was estimated in the range of 10-20 μM. The OP pesticides spiked in artificial saliva and drinking water gave superior peak profiles, and good average recoveries 95.6% and 62.3%, respectively. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is a biomarker of inflammation that occurs in patients suffering from heart failure (HF). Saliva can be sampled in a non-invasive way, and it is currently gaining importance as matrix alternative to blood in diagnostic and therapy monitoring. This work presents the development of an immunosensor array based on eight screen-printed gold electrodes to detect TNF-α in saliva samples. Two different functionalization strategies of electrodes were compared. In the first, anti-TNF-α antibodies were chemically bonded onto the electrode by functionalization with 4-carboxymethylaniline. The other functionalization procedure involved the binding of antibodies onto polymer-coated magnetic microparticles, which were then deposited onto the electrode by pulsed chronoamperometry. Finally, the chronoamperometry technique was applied to characterize the modified SPEAu. The use of a secondary antibody anti-TNF-α (Ab-TNF-α-HRP) labelled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP, 2 µg·mL -1 ) was investigated using tetramethylbenzidine (TMB, pH = 3.75) as electrochemical substrate containing 0.2 mM of H₂O₂. A sandwich-type detection strategy with a secondary antibody anti-TNF-α provided chronoamperometric analyses in 10 s for each sample. Linearity, precision, limit of detection, and selectivity of devices were investigated. Interferences were evaluated by analyzing solutions containing other cytokine produced during the acute stage of inflammation. The immunosensor showed good performance within the clinically relevant concentration range, with a precision of 8%, and a limit of detection of 0.3 pg/mL. Therefore, it may represent a promising tool for monitoring HF in a non-invasive way.

Statement of Problem: The hardness of silicone resilient denture liners was reported to be more stable than that of acrylic resin resilient denture liners. However, the changes in hardness of these materials in artificial saliva are unclear., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate changes in the hardness of addition-polymerizing silicone-resilient denture liners for long-term use after storage in artificial saliva., Material and Methods: Four addition-polymerizing silicone resilient denture liners were tested: GC Reline Soft, Elite Soft Relining, Megabase, and Mucopren Soft. All were long-term relining materials of the soft type. Fifteen disk-shaped specimens were prepared for each of the tested materials (40 mm in base diameter, 8 mm in thickness). Their initial hardness was assessed with a Shore A durometer, after which they were stored in artificial saliva at a temperature of 37°C. Hardness was examined after 7, 30, and 90 days. Statistical analysis was performed using parametric ANOVA for dependent and independent variables and Tukey honest significant difference (HSD) post hoc tests (α=.05)., Results: All resilient denture liners increased in hardness during the experiment. The change was least for Elite Soft Relining, and GC Reline Soft was the hardest material. Initially, Megabase and Mucopren Soft were significantly softer than the other 2 materials, but their hardness increased rapidly after the first 7 days of specimen conditioning, achieving values close to Elite Soft Relining., Conclusions: Within the limitations of the study, room temperature vulcanizing addition-polymerizing polyvinyl siloxanes of the soft type have different initial hardness, and this changes with storage time in artificial saliva at the temperature of the oral cavity., (Copyright © 2018 Editorial Council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Purpose: In the field of prosthodontics, patients often require complex and extensive restorative care. This can involve the use of dental restorations to restore teeth on both the maxillary and mandibular arch. Current literature has evaluated the wear properties of different dental ceramics against enamel, but studies regarding dental ceramics opposing one another are limited. The purpose of this study was to assess the wear potential and wear behavior of CAD/CAM zirconia (ZR) and lithium disilicate (LD) materials against a similar ceramic material, and how the surface finish of these dental ceramics might affect patterns of wear., Materials and Methods: Using a sphere-on-plate tribometer system, different surface finishes (glazed-G and glazed then polished-GP) of ZR and LD were evaluated following wear simulation. Artificial saliva of physiologic pH was used as a lubricant during wear simulation at 37°C. The coefficient of friction (COF) was calculated during the wear simulation. After wear simulation was complete, volume loss, surface roughness, and surface characterization of the specimens were analyzed using white-light interferometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistical significance between materials and surface finish was established with two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test (α = 0.05)., Results: Based on the 2-way ANOVA, material (p = 0.002) significantly affected the COF. LD showed a higher COF (p = 0.002) than ZR. Material (p < 0.001) and surface finish (p = 0.004) significantly affected the surface roughness inside the scar. ZR had significantly lower surface roughness compared to LD (p < 0.001). For outside scar, surface finish (p < 0.001) significantly affected the surface roughness. Polished specimens showed significantly higher roughness compared to glazed specimens for both inside (p = 0.004) and outside scar (p < 0.001). For volume loss, material (p < 0.001) and the interaction between material and surface finish (p < 0.001) were statistically significant. LD had higher volume loss than ZR (p < 0.001). For both glazed and polished finished, LD-G and LD-GP had significantly higher volume loss than ZR-G (p = 0.028), and ZR-GP (p < 0.001), respectively. SEM analysis indicated particle build-up and a grooving mechanism of wear for the LD-GP specimens. This suggested a three-body wear phenomenon occurring for LD-GP specimens, which was not visible in SEM imaging for other specimen types., Conclusions: This study demonstrated the resistance to wear and low abrasiveness of ZR when compared to LD in a simulated masticatory environment. This can be best explained by the increased strength of ZR, and the introduction of three-body wear to LD specimens from the accumulation of embedded wear debris onto its surface. Aim: The aim of the present study was to estimate nickel and chromium release from commercially available stainless steel crowns (SSCs) in artificial saliva., Materials and Methods: Ten crowns from three manufacturers were immersed in 10 ml of artificial saliva and stored in separate tubes in an incubator at 37°C for 28 days. The crowns were removed from each tube on every 7 th day, and placed in other tubes with fresh artificial saliva. Flame type atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to check for the release of metal ions in the solution inside each tube at the end of 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days and the control samples., Results and Statistical Analysis: Two-way analysis of variance and pairwise comparison using Bonferroni test was used for statistical analysis. There was statistically verified difference in the release of nickel and chromium on different days in each of the group of SSCs tested. However, no significant difference was seen in the release of both metals among the groups., Conclusion: In all the SSCs tested, there was the release of nickel and chromium, but the total release of both the metals even at a period of 28 days was below the critical level to cause any toxic effects. Hence, the release of metal ions should not be an alarming concern for the use of any of the group of commercially available SSCs., Competing Interests: None

In this work, the microextraction devices in form of sachets were prepared and used for isolation of released dental fillings components from artificial saliva solutions As sorbents mesoporous aluminosilicate and C18-bonded silica were used. Gas chromatography was used for indication of analytes in samples. The dependence of adsorption on variable factors were determined. The effect of adsorbent mass, the membrane type for μ-SPE device and time of adsorption on the efficiency of the process were examined. The dependence between the extraction recovery and the desorption solvent was also indicated. Based on calculated adsorption capacities in time of adsorption and equilibrium state the kinetic study was prepared. The validation of determination method by using of membrane-protected microextraction for sample preparation was conducted. The developed method proved to be convenient and offers good reproducibility. The detection limits of the method under optimized conditions were in the range of 0,117 μg mL -1 for camphor to 1407 μg mL -1 for 4-methoxyphenol.
