Abstract

We present an implicit statistical model for the steric effect on the potential of mean force (PMF) of a molecule diffusing through a flexible nanochannel of varying size. The average cross sectional area profile of the channel and the average minimal projection area of the molecule are the two major quantities determining the steric part of the PMF barrier for the translocation of the particle in the case of a small rigid particle and a large rigid channel. In this case, the description is reduced to the Fick-Jacobs model and the PMF is completely entropic. However, the flexibility of channel's cross section and that of molecule's size play crucial role when a large molecule goes through a narrow channel. The PMF profile changes its statictical nature and becomes enthalpic. We treat the flexibility in terms of the equilibrium fluctuations of the pore and of the molecule, independently. 5. Medical nutrition therapy of pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus in India: Unique aspects and challenges

Abstract

Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is a vital aspect of management of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and should be tailored to ethnic and family traditions and the socioeconomic and educational status of the patient. In this article, we discuss the unique aspects of MNT in children and adolescents with T1DM in the Indian setting, with focus on the challenges faced by patients, dieticians and physicians and how these can be overcome. The authors reviewed the available literature on MNT in T1DM from India and prepared the document based on their vast collective clinical experience in treating patients with T1DM from different regions in India. Indian diets are predominantly carbohydrate-based with high glycemic index (GI) and low protein content. Various methods are available to increase the protein and fiber content and reduce the GI of food in order to limit glycemic excursions. Insulin regimens need to be tailored to the child's school timings, meal schedule, and the availability of a responsible adult to supervise/administer insulin. All patients, irrespective of economic and education background, should be taught the broad principles of healthy eating, balanced diet and carbohydrate counting. There are various barriers to dietary compliance, including joint family system, changing lifestyles, and other factors which need to be addressed. There is a need to customize dietary management according to patient characteristics and needs and develop standardized patient educational material on principles of healthy eating in various regional languages.

Abstract

The wide use of Fipronil as insecticide, acaricide and product to control other arthropods in pets and households may determine its indoor presence and cause non-food exposure. The presence of total Fipronil (as sum of the parent drug plus its sulfone metabolite) was determined in samples of residential house-dust, in Italy, by LC-MS Orbitrap, with a reporting limit (RL) of 0.01 mg/kg dry weight. A number of 127 out of 164 samples felt above the RL, and total fipronil followed a skewed distribution, with P50, P75, mean, P90, P95 and maximum values falling at 0.05, 0.53, 2.93, 5.83, 18.2 and 74.1 mg/kg dust, respectively. Fipronil has been reported up to 14 mg/kg level in in indoor dust USA in 2009 (N = 24), whereas sparse of data are available in the EU. Within an “One Health” approach, such evidences highlight the need to consider indoor dust as an aggregated source of exposure in toddlers, due to their mouthing and licking behaviour and time spent in close contact with floor. Moreover, results indicate the persistence of veterinary biocide/drug residues in indoor as an emerging issue to be tackled also in term of the induction of drug resistance in target pests.

Abstract

In the field of cardiovascular diseases, elevated levels of serum uric acid (UA) reflect a marked activation of the xanthine oxidase pathway with increase in free radicals production; it is often associated with an inflammatory state, oxygen consumption and endothelial dysfunction. All these associations have been also confirmed in heart failure (HF) but the pathophysiological role of UA in this setting is not well understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic role of UA in outpatients enrolled in the Italian Registry of Congestive Heart Failure (IN-CHF).All patients met the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) criteria for diagnosis of HF. We considered patients with complete clinical data and UA level available at the baseline and at 1-year follow-up. The study population was composed of 877 patients aged 63 ± 12 years. One-year mortality was 10.8% and dead patients had a higher level of UA than survivors (7.1 mg dl⁻¹ vs 6.6 mg dl⁻¹, p0.0207). In multivariable full model of analysis, UA did not result in an independent predictor of death in overall population, but only in patients with low body mass index (BMI) (≤22 kg m⁻²) (hazard ratio (HR): 2.38, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.36-4.18). In this subgroup, a statistically significant gradual relationship between UA and survival was detected starting from values higher than 8 mg dl⁻¹.Elevated level of UA is not an independent predictor of mortality in chronic HF, but it markedly worsens outcome if associated with low level of BMI. This association is likely an indicator of chronic inflammatory and catabolic state.

Abstract

A modified technique to measure acoustic nonlinearity in fatigued components is proposed in this paper. The advantage of the proposed technique is that it minimizes measurement errors due to the couplant between the transducers and the specimen. Measurements are performed on a fatigued steel 4340 specimen and the coefficients of variation of the nonlinearity parameter are calculated. It is shown that the coefficients of variation of the nonlinearity parameter obtained using the proposed technique are approximately half of that obtained using the conventional technique.

18. ABB Code for Responsible Gambling and Player Protection: Evaluation of early impact among machine gamblers

Abstract

n September 2013, the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) launched its new Code for Responsible Gambling and Practice (‘the Code’). The Code included a range of measures aimed at reducing gambling-related harm and increasing business responsibility and sustainability. New measures introduced by the Code included enhanced staff training on responsible gambling with emphasis on staff interaction with customers; technological changes to machines whereby players could set limits on how long they wanted to gamble for or how much money they wanted to spend; mandatory messages on machines alerting players if they had gambled for 30 minutes or more or inserted £250 or more into the machine; greater advertising of responsible gambling messages; and enhancements of existing practice around age-verification and self-exclusion. All aspects of the Code were implemented on 1st March 2014 in bookmakers which signed up to it (termed bookmakers in ‘treated’ areas). Bookmakers in the West Midlands (termed bookmakers in ‘untreated’ areas) implemented the Code one month later, on 1st April 2014. This early impact evaluation compared machine gambling sessions in treated bookmakers in March 2014 (that is, after the Code was introduced) with sessions played in untreated bookmakers over the same period. This was to explore whether the introduction of the Code had any impact on machine gamblers’ behaviour during the first month of implementation (hence early impact). This evaluation was limited to analysis of data captured by bookmakers’ machines. Therefore, this report assesses the early impact of the Code on machine gamblers, rather than all gamblers within bookmakers. Accordingly, more attention is given to the new machine tools (voluntary limits and mandatory alerts).

Abstract

The Pantanal climate presents marked seasonality and eventually strong winds occur, especially in the beginning of the rainy season, which may last from September or October until April. A phytosociological study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a strong wind on the composition and structure of two forest formations in Pantanal wetland, a semideciduous forest (19º 15’ 32’’S and 55º 45’ 23.7’’W) and a forested savanna - “cerradão” (19° 17’ 21’’S and 55º 45’ 8.9’’W), with trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ? 5 cm. After the strong wind, a reduction of 6% of the basal area and volume in the semideciduous forest was observed, mainly due to the uprooting of Xylopia aromatica trees. In the forested savanna, the basal area and volume reduction was even higher; an estimated 10%, representing 69 uprooted trees per hectare, mainly of Copaifera martii trees. In both areas it was observed that the uprooted trees presented an average height and diameter bigger than the trees that remained intact. Usually, the trees that were uprooted presented higher wood density and the species that had broken branches had a lower density.

23. The Determinants of Retail Productivity: A Critical Review of the Evidence

Abstract

This paper discusses the literature on the established determinants of productivity in the retail sector. It also draws attention to some neglected strands of research which provide useful insights into strategies that could allow productivity enhancements in this area of the economy. To date, very few attempts have been made to integrate different specialisms in order to explain what drives productivity in retail. Here this paper rectifies this omission by putting together studies from economics, geography, knowledge management and employment studies. It is the authors’ view that quantitative studies of retail productivity should focus on total factor productivity in retailing as the result of competition/composition effects, planning regulations, information and communications technology, the multinational operation element and workforce skills. Further, the fact that retail firms possess advantages that are transferable between locations suggests that investment in strategies enhancing the transfer of explicit and tacit knowledge between and within businesses are crucial to achieve productivity gains.

Abstract

Objectives: The role of atrial fibrillation (AF) in older patients with heart failure (HF) is controversial because many variables seem to influence their outcome. We investigated the predictivity of AF in 3 age groups of outpatients with HF. Methods: We analyzed 8,178 outpatients enrolled in the Italian Network on Congestive Heart Failure Registry with HF diagnosed according to the European Society of Cardiology criteria. A trained cardiologist established the diagnosis of AF and HF at the entry visit at each center. We stratified the population into 3 age groups, as follows: group A, ≤65 years; group B, 66–75 years, and group C, >75 years. Results: Group A was composed of 4,261 patients, 683 with AF (16.0%); in group B there were 2,651 patients, 638 with AF (24.1%), and group C was composed of 1,266 patients, 412 with AF (32.5%). The 1-year mortality rate was higher in AF patients in all groups. In a multivariate model, AF remained an independent risk factor for death in groups A and B, but not in group C [group A: hazard ratio (HR) 1.42, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10–1.81; group B: HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.00–1.67; group C: HR 1.05, 95% CI 0.78–1.43]. Conclusion: The prevalence of AF increased with age and was associated with a higher mortality rate. However, AF independently predicted all-cause mortality only in patients aged ≤75 years.

26. Sustainable management of natural forests in Pantanal Region, Brazil

Abstract

The Pantanal region in Brazil has an area of 140,000 km², with approximately 30 % of natural forests distributed as deciduous, semideciduous, and forested savannas. The subregion of Nhecolandia represents 19 % of this area. There is constant concern about the sustainability of these forested areas, as there is a constant demand for wood for farm maintenance, mainly for making fence poles. The objective of this article is to indicate sustainable forest management practices in the Pantanal region of Nhecolandia. The methodology of this novel approach consisted of the recovery and organization of the available information to calculate the sustainable allowable cut per hectare, considering: cutting cycle, wood stock, periodic annual increment (PAI) in percentage of volume from the commercial or interesting species and the stand structure. For forested savannas, the diameter at breast height (DBH) of 529 trees per hectare were estimated as follows: 28 % with a DBH lower than 10 cm, 36 % from 10 to 20 cm, 21 % from 20 to 30 cm, 10 % from 30 to 40 cm and only 4 % greater than 40 cm. The estimated total volume per hectare was 84.2 m³ and the estimated basal area was 18.6 m². The forested areas of the Pantanal region present potential for sustainable use. However, due to regional characteristics and the lack of available information, an enhancement in research is recommended to establish a basic management guide to ensure its perpetuation for future generations.

Trichilia elegans A. Juss. é uma espécie com ampla distribuição, que ocorre desde a Venezuela até o Uruguai, e constitui componente comum no sub-bosque de formações estacionais. Mesmo que os primeiros estudos sobre a flora pantaneira datem de mais de um século, trabalhos voltados para a estrutura e a distribuição espacial de espécies arbóreas ocorrentes na região são ainda raros. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram identificar o padrão de distribuição espacial e a distribuição diamétrica de T. elegans e verificar se existe correlação entre o número de indivíduos jovens e o número de indivíduos adultos em uma floresta semidecídua no Pantanal da Nhecolândia. Para o levantamento, foram amostradas 50 parcelas de 200 m2 cada e inventariados os indivíduos jovens e adultos em cada uma delas. Com o intuito de identificar o padrão de distribuição espacial, foram utilizados o Índice de Morisita (IM) e a razão de variância/média (R). Foram encontrados 218 indivíduos jovens e 78 adultos. Indivíduos jovens e adultos apresentaram distribuição espacial agrupada, estando os jovens (IM = 2,32; R = 5,49) mais agrupados que os adultos (IM = 1,88; R = 2,05). O coeficiente de correlação linear encontrado (r = 0,60) demonstrou que a densidade de indivíduos jovens está altamente correlacionada com a densidade de indivíduos adultos.

Abstract

Informações sobre a influência de fatores ambientais na taxa de crescimento das espécies arbóreas são importantes para o manejo de florestas naturais ou plantadas, sendo os anéis de crescimento uma ferramenta adequada para essas análises. Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar a idade e os incrementos radiais do tronco de árvores de 19 espécies de florestas naturais do Pantanal da Nhecolândia, pelo estudo dos anéis de crescimento. A coleta dos discos do caule das árvores foi realizada na fazenda Nhumirim, da Embrapa Pantanal, localizada na sub-região da Nhecolândia, município de Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul. As árvores de 19 espécies foram selecionadas pela boa forma da copa em áreas de vegetação de cerrado (Savana Arborizada), cerradão (Savana Florestada), e mata (Floresta Estacional Semidecidual), sendo coletados discos do lenho 0,30 m do solo para a determinação da idade e do incremento médio nos 5 primeiros anos e 1,30 m para a avaliação do ritmo de crescimento. Os anéis de crescimento foram contados e medidos em 8 raios de cada disco. Os incrementos radiais médios anuais das espécies arbóreas estudadas apresentaram grande amplitude, variando de 0,21 a 0,94 cm em árvores de 10 a 31 anos.

Abstract

Since the large multicenter DIG trial has shown no effects of digitalis on the all-cause mortality of patients with chronic heart failure (HF), the broad prescription of this drug in patients with HF appears to be at the very least, questionable. The aims of this study were: to analyze prescription patterns of digitalis, from 1995 to 2000, in a large group of outpatients with HF; to analyze the independent predictors of digitalis prescription and to evaluate the impact of the results of the DIG trial on the prescription rate of this drug.From 1995 to 2000, 11 070 HF outpatients (mean age 64 +/- 12 years, ejection fraction 35 +/- 12%) were enrolled in a large Italian database.Out of 11 070 patients, 7198 (65%) were treated with digitalis. At multivariate analysis, the following variables were independently associated with digitalis prescription; atrial fibrillation (odds ratio [OR] 3.3, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.9-3.8), ejection fraction30% (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.5-1.9), NYHA class III-IV vs II-III (OR 1.3, 95% CI 1.2-1.5), admission for HF during the previous year (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-1.5). After the publication of the DIG trial, there was a significant reduction in the rate of digitalis prescription: the percentage of patients taking digitalis fell from 68% in 1996-1997 to 61% in 1998-1999 (p0.001).Over 60% of Italian outpatients with HF were treated with digitalis; as expected, patients with a low ejection fraction, atrial fibrillation and in a more advanced stage of HF are more likely to receive this drug. Finally, after the publication of the DIG trial, the rate of digitalis prescription significantly decreased.

Abstract

(Fitossociologia de remanescentes de floresta estacional decidual em Corumbá, Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul. Brasil). O estudo foi realizado em quatro remanescentes próximos a cidade de Corumbá, MS (19°05'-19°20' S e 57°40'-57°55' W), com o objetivo de verificar a variação da composição florística e estrutura da floresta decídua em diferentes relevos e tipos de solo. Quatro remanescentes foram amostrados pelo método de quadrantes. Três áreas foram amostradas com 20 pontos, e a quarta área foi amostrada com 50 pontos. Todas as árvores com circunferência à altura do peito > 9 cm foram amostradas. Na floresta estacional decidual aluvial foram amostradas 32 espécies, sendo as de maior valor de importância Attalea phalerata Mart. ex Spreng. (Arecaceae) e Aspidospenna australe Müll. Arg. (Apocynaceae). Nas duas áreas de floresta estacional decidual de terras baixas, foram amostradas 47 e 25 espécies, respectivamente, sendo Sebastiania discolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) c Phyllostylon rhamnoides (J. Poiss.) Taub. (Ulmaceae) as mais importantes em ambas. No remanescente de floresta estacional decidual submontana foram amostradas 24 espécies, sobressaindo-se Acosmium cardenasii H.S. Irwin & Arroyo (Fabaceae) como a mais importante. A família mais rica nas áreas estudadas foi Fabaceae, com 16 espécies, seguida por Euphorbiaceae, com seis espécies, e por Apocynaceae, Rubiaceae e Sapindaceae, com três espécies cada. As duas áreas de florestas de terras baixas mostraram-se muito similares, tanto na composição florística, como na estrutura. A floresta aluvial apresentou composição florítica e estrutura mais distintas das demais áreas. Estes remanescentes de florestas estacionais deciduais apresentaram estrutura e composição florística peculiares, com elementos do chaco e da caatinga, merecendo a intensificação de estudos botânicos e ecológicos.

O Pantanal da Nhecolândia pode ser visto como uma dessas regiões, pois apresenta fatores edafoclimáticos que induzem a formação de anéis anuais. Esse estudo tem por objetivo determinar a correlação entre a precipitação pluviométrica e o crescimento, pela análise dos anéis de crescimento de Tabebuia heptaphylla, uma espécie arbórea decídua que ocorre naturalmente na região. Foram coletados discos à altura do solo e a cada metro de uma árvore com boa formação de copa. Em cada disco foram contados e medidos os anéis de crescimento em oito raios. Foi utilizado o coeficiente de Pearson para mostrar a correlação entre os anéis de crescimento e a precipitação. A idade da árvore foi estimada em 16 anos. A correlação do incremento radial com a precipitação foi significativa em nível de 5% para os discos de 1 a 5 metros de altura. Para os discos acima de 6 metros os resultados não foram significativos, provavelmente devido ao menor número de pares testados. A espécie T. heptaphylla apresenta grande potencial para ser utilizada em estudos dendroecológicos, sendo também importante ampliar os estudos sobre a dinâmica de crescimento dessa espécie.

Abstract

N-terminally truncated amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptides are present in early and diffuse plaques of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD), are overproduced in early onset familial AD and their amount seems to be directly correlated to the severity and the progression of the disease in AD and Down's syndrome (DS). The pyroglutamate-containing isoforms at position 3 [AbetaN3(pE)-40/42] represent the prominent form among the N- truncated species, and may account for more than 50% of Abeta accumulated in plaques. In this study, we compared the toxic properties, fibrillogenic capabilities, and in vitro degradation profile of Abeta1-40, Abeta1-42, AbetaN3(pE)-40 and AbetaN3(pE)-42. Our data show that fibre morphology of Abeta peptides is greatly influenced by the C-terminus while toxicity, interaction with cell membranes and degradation are influenced by the N- terminus. AbetaN3(pE)-40 induced significantly more cell loss than the other species both in neuronal and glial cell cultures. Aggregated AbetaN3 (pE) peptides were heavily distributed on plasma membrane and within the cytoplasm of treated cells. AbetaN3(pE)-40/42 peptides showed a significant resistance to degradation by cultured astrocytes, while full- length peptides resulted partially degraded. These findings suggest that formation of N-terminally modified peptides may enhance beta-amyloid aggregation and toxicity, likely worsening the onset and progression of the disease.
