Abstract

Transient salinity associated with increased dispersion of clays is arguably one of the most economically important soil constraints in Australia because it occurs on land that is regularly cropped. However, this issue is rarely studied. This paper examines the occurrence of transient salinity on agricultural land in the south-west of Western Australia and the factors causing it. We analysed four soil datasets from the region, collected at scales varying from the entire southwest to a single paddock. A variety of soil parameters were correlated with increased electrical conductivity ([EC.sub.1:5]). The most significant relationships were invariably with measures of exchangeable sodium ([Na.sup.+]; 53-85% of variance accounted for), and this factor appears to be most responsible for transient salinity. Another parameter correlated with increased [EC.sub.1:5] was alkalinity. This has been associated with the increased dispersion of kaolinite and consequent decreases in soil hydraulic conductivity; kaolinite is the most common clay mineral in the south-west of Western Australia. Other factors correlated with increased [EC.sub.1:5] were increasing clay, increasing depth in the soil profile and decreasing rainfall. These factors are environmental indicators of transient salinity. Affected soils might be ameliorated by application of agents to increase soil hydraulic conductivity, such as gypsum and/or elemental sulfur. Abstract

In order to investigate the origin of the high conductivity anomalies geophysically observed in the mid-lower crust of Tibet Plateau, the electrical conductivity of plagioclase-NaCl-water system was measured at 1.2 GPa and 400-900 K. The relationship between electrical conductivity and temperature follows the Arrhenius law. The bulk conductivity increases with the fluid fraction and salinity, but is almost independent of temperature (activation enthalpy less than 0.1 eV). The conductivity of plagioclase-NaCl-water system is much lower than that of albite-NaCl-water system with similar fluid fraction and salinity, indicating a strong effect of the major mineral phase on the bulk conductivity of the brine-bearing system. The high conductivity anomalies of 10.sup.-1 and 10.sup.0 S/m observed in the mid-lower crust of Tibet Plateau can be explained by the aqueous fluid with a volume fraction of 1 and 9%, respectively, if the fluid salinity is 25%. The anomaly value of 10.sup.-1 S/m can be explained by the aqueous fluid with a volume fraction of 6% if the salinity is 10%. Abstract

Process-based models could be used to predict the soil saturated extract salinity from extractable ion contents. However, a rigorous validation of such models for this purpose had not been carried out. A process-based model to predict the main inorganic ion composition, electrical conductivity, and pH of the saturated paste extract from extractable ion contents was developed step by step. The model development started from the principle of matter conservation in the soil solution as it concentrates from the 1:5 to the saturated paste extract. The need to include new hypotheses in the model was studied through calculation and analysis of standardised differences between measurements and model predictions. Therefore, best estimates of saturation paste extract properties occurred after taking into account the following: (i) free equilibration of the soil solution with the minerals calcite and gypsum under C[O.sub.2] partial pressure of the saturated paste; (ii) further equilibration of the soil solution with the exchange complex; and (iii) determination of salt contents within the diffuse double layer (DDL) of the soil colloids, i.e. the anion exclusion. The last was necessary because the extracts where the determination of soil extractable anions (1:5 extracts), cations, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were carried out were separated from their suspensions through centrifugation. Therefore, the reliable prediction of soil saturated paste extract salinity demands data on soil extractable ion contents, CEC, and the quantification of salts within the DDL. It uses climatological salinity interpolated to the float positions and observed I[cedilla] surfaces and chooses 10 'best' levels that are within well-mixed mode waters or deep homogeneous water masses. A piece-wise linear fit is used to estimate the temporally varying multiplicative adjustment to the float potential conductivities. An objective, statistical method is used to choose the breakpoints in the float time series where there are multiple drift trends. In the previous methods these breakpoints were chosen subjectively by manually splitting the time series into separate segments over which the fits were made. Our statistical procedure reduces the subjectivity by providing an automated way for doing the piece-wise linear fit. Uncertainties in this predicted adjustment are estimated using a Monte-Carlo simulation. Examples of this new procedure as applied to two Argo floats are presented.
