Search

Determining the AGN content in structures of different mass/velocity dispersion and comparing them to higher mass/lower redshift analogs is important to understand how the AGN formation process is related to environmental properties. We use our well-tested cluster finding algorithm to identify structures in the GOODS North and South fields, exploiting the available spectroscopic redshifts and accurate photometric redshifts. We identify 9 structures in GOODS-south (presented in a previous paper) and 8 new structures in GOODS-north. We only consider structures where at least 2/3 of the members brighter than M_R=-20 have a spectroscopic redshift. For those group members that coincide with X-ray sources in the 4 and 2 Msec Chandra source catalogs respectively, we determine if the X-ray emission originates from AGN activity or it is related to the galaxies' star-formation activity. We find that the fraction of AGN with Log L_H > 42 erg/s in galaxies with M_R < -20 is on average 6.3+-1.3%, much higher than in lower redshift groups of similar mass and more than double the fraction found in massive clusters at a similarly high redshift. We then explore the spatial distribution of AGN in the structures and find that they preferentially populate the outer regions. The colors of AGN host galaxies in structures tend to be confined to the green valley, thus avoiding the blue cloud and, partially, also the red-sequence, contrary to what happens in the field. We finally compare our results to the predictions of two sets of semi analytic models to investigate the evolution of AGN and evaluate potential triggering and fueling mechanisms. The outcome of this comparison attests the importance of galaxy encounters, not necessarily leading to mergers, as an efficient AGN triggering mechanism. We used Early Release Science (ERS) observations taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) in the GOODS-S field to study the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) at 0.6<=z<4.5. Deep WFC3 near-IR data (for Y as faint as 27.3, J and H as faint as 27.4 AB mag at 5 sigma), as well as deep Ks (as faint as 25.5 at 5 sigma) Hawk-I band data, provide an exquisite data set with which determine in an unprecedented way the low-mass end of the GSMF, allowing an accurate probe of masses as low as M~7.6 10^9 Msun at z~3. Although the area used is relatively small (~33 arcmin^2), we found generally good agreement with previous studies on the entire mass range. Our results show that the slope of the faint-end increases with redshift, from alpha=-1.44+/-0.03 at z~0.8 to alpha=-1.86+/-0.16 at z~3, although indications exist that it does not steepen further between z~3 and z~4. This result is insensitive to any uncertainty in the M* parameter. The steepness of the GSMF faint-end solves the well-known disagreement between the stellar mass density (SMD) and the integrated star formation history at z>2. However, we confirm the that there appears to be an excess of integrated star formation with respect to the SMD at z<2, by a factor of ~2-3. Our comparison of the observations with theoretical predictions shows that the models forecast a greater abundance of low mass galaxies, at least up to z~3, as well as a dearth of massive galaxies at z~4 with respect to the data, and that the predicted SMD is generally overestimated at z<~2., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We report on the evolution of the number density and size of early-type galaxies from z~2 to z~0. We select a sample of 563 massive (M>10^{10} Msun), passively evolving (SSFR<10^{-2} Gyr^{-1}) and morphologically spheroidal galaxies at 01.2 and z<1.2, respectively). We measure a significant evolution of the mass-size relation of early-type galaxies, with the fractional increment that is almost independent on the stellar mass. Early-type galaxies (ETGs) formed at z>1 appear to be preferentially small, and the evolution of the mass-size relation at z<1 is driven by both the continuous size growth of the compact galaxies and the appearance of new ETGs with large sizes. We also find that the number density of all passive early-type galaxies increases rapidly, by a factor of 5, from z~2 to z~1, and then more mildly by another factor of 1.5 from z~1 to z~0. We interpret these results as the evidence that the bulk of the ETGs are formed at 1

[Abridged] We use the large public spectroscopic database available in the GOODS-South field to estimate the dynamical mass and the virialization status of cluster ClG 0332-2747 at z=0.734. Cluster members selected from their photometric redshift are used with spectroscopic ones to analyse the galaxy population of the cluster. In the newly released Chandra 4Ms observations we detect a faint extended X-ray emission associated to the cluster. Finally, we compare the optical and X-ray properties of ClG 0332-2747 with the predictions of a well tested semianalytic model. We estimate the velocity dispersion and the virial mass considering all 44 spectroscopic members, or 20 red-sequence members only. We obtain sigma_v=634 +/- 105 Km/s, M_200=3.07 ^{+1.57}_{-1.16}~10^{14} M_sun in the former case, and slightly lower values in the latter case. The cluster appears to have reached the virial equilibrium: it shows a perfectly Gaussian velocity distribution and no evidence for substructures. ClG 0332-2747 contains a high fraction of bright red galaxies, and is dominated by a very massive (1.1 x 10^{12} M_sun) old brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), suggesting that it formed at an early epoch. We detect a faint extended X-ray source centered on the BCG, with a total X-ray luminosity of L_X ~ 2 x 10^{42} erg s^-1 (0.1-2.4 keV). This L_X is lower by a factor of ~10-20 than expected according to the M-L_X relation. We provide a possible explanation of this discrepancy as due to the effects of AGN feedback on the ICM: the semianalytic model reproduces the M-L_X relation measured from "X-ray bright" clusters, and it predicts a high scatter at low masses due to heating and expulsion of the cluster gas. (Abridged) We present here the second half of an ESO Large Programme, which exploits the unique combination of area and sensitivity provided in the near-IR by the camera Hawk-I at the VLT. We have obtained - 30 observing hours with Hawk-I in the Y-band of two high galactic latitude fields. We combined the Y-band data with deep J and K Hawk-I observations, and with FORS1/FORS2 U, B, V, R, I, and Z observations to select z-drop galaxies having Z - Y > 1, no optical detection and flat Y - J and Y - K colour terms. We detect 8 high-quality candidates in the magnitude range Y = 25.5 - 26.5 that we add to the z-drop candidates selected in two Hawk-I pointings over the GOODS-South field. We use this full sample of 15 objects found in -161 arcmin^2 of our survey to constrain the average physical properties and the evolution of the number density of z ~ 7 LBGs. A stacking analysis yields a best-fit SED with photometric redshift z= 6.85 +0.20 -0.15 and an E(B-V)=0.05 +0.15 -0.05. We compute a binned estimate of the z ~ 7 LF and explore the effects of photometric scatter and model uncertainties on the statistical constraints. After accounting for the expected incompleteness through MonteCarlo simulations, we strengthen our previous finding that a Schechter luminosity function constant from z=6 to z=7 is ruled out at a >99% confidence level, even including the effects of cosmic variance. For galaxies brighter than M_1500= -19.0, we derive a luminosity density rho_UV = 1.5^{+2.1}{-0.8} x 10^25 erg/s/Hz/Mpc^3, implying a decrease by a factor 3.5 from z=6 to z=6.8. We find that, under standard assumptions, the emission rate of ionizing photons coming from UV bright galaxies is lower by at least a factor of two than the value required for reionization. Finally, we exploit deep Hawk-I J and K band observations to derive an upper limit on the number density of M1500<~ -22.0 LBGs at z-8 (Y-dropouts)., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. We present near-IR images, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the WFC3/IR camera, of six passive and massive galaxies at redshift 1.3

We perform a deep search for galaxies in the redshift range 6.51, Y-J<1.5 and Y-K<2. The other public data in the UBVRIJHK bands are used to reject possible low redshift interlopers. The output has been compared with extensive Monte Carlo simulations to quantify the observational effects of our selection criteria as well as the effects of photometric errors. We detect 7 high quality candidates in the magnitude range Y=25.5-26.7. This interval samples the critical range for M* at z>6 (M_1500 ~- 19.5 to -21.5). After accounting for the expected incompleteness, we rule out at a 99% confidence level a Luminosity Function constant from z=6 to z=7, even including the effects of cosmic variance. For galaxies brighter than M_1500=-19.0 we derive a luminosity density rho_UV=1.5^{+2.0}_{-0.9} 10^25 erg/s/Hz/Mpc3, implying a decrease by a factor 3.5 from z=6 to z~6.8. On the basis of our findings, we make predictions for the surface densities expected in future surveys surveys, based on ULTRA-VISTA, HST-WFC3 or JWST-NIRCam, evaluating the best observational strategy to maximise their impact., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We study the star formation and the mass assembly process of 0.3<=z<2.5 galaxies using their IR emission from MIPS 24um band. We used an updated version of the GOODS-MUSIC catalog, extended by the addition of mid-IR fluxes. We compared two different estimators of the Star Formation Rate: the total infrared emission derived from 24um, estimated using both synthetic and empirical IR templates, and the multiwavelength fit to the full galaxy SED. For both estimates, we computed the SFR Density and the Specific SFR. The two SFR tracers are roughly consistent, given the uncertainties involved. However, they show a systematic trend, IR-based estimates exceeding the fit-based ones as the SFR increases. We show that: a) at z>0.3, the SFR is well correlated with stellar mass, and this relationship seems to steepen with redshift (using IR-based SFRs); b) the contribution to the global SFRD by massive galaxies increases with redshift up to ~2.5, more rapidly than for galaxies of lower mass, but appears to flatten at higher z; c) despite this increase, the most important contributors to the SFRD at any z are galaxies of about, or immediately lower than, the characteristic stellar mass; d) at z~2, massive galaxies are actively star-forming, with a median SFR 300 Msun/yr. During this epoch, they assemble a substantial part of their final stellar mass; e) the SSFR shows a clear bimodal distribution. The analysis of the SFRD and the SSFR seems to support the downsizing scenario, according to which high mass galaxies have formed their stars earlier and faster than their low mass counterparts. A comparison with theoretical models indicates that they follow the global increase in the SSFR with redshift and predict the existence of quiescent galaxies even at z>1.5, but they systematically underpredict the average SSFR., Comment: Accepted by A&A. The aim of this paper is to identify and study the properties and galactic content of groups and clusters in the GOODS-South field up to z\sim2.5, and to analyse the physical properties of galaxies as a continuous function of environmental density up to high redshift. We use the deep (z850\sim26), multi-wavelength GOODS-MUSIC catalogue, which has a 15% of spectroscopic redshifts and accurate photometric redshifts for the remaining fraction. On these data, we apply a (2+1)D algorithm, previously developed by our group, that provides an adaptive estimate of the 3D density field. We support our analysis with simulations to evaluate the purity and the completeness of the cluster catalogue produced by our algorithm. We find several high density peaks embedded in larger structures in the redshift range 0.4-2.5. From the analysis of their physical properties (mass profile, M200, \sigmav, LX, U-B vs. B diagram), we derive that most of them are groups of galaxies, while two are poor clusters with masses of few times 10^14 Mo. For these two clusters we find, from the Chandra 2Ms data, an X-ray emission significantly lower than expected from their optical properties, suggesting that the two clusters are either not virialised or gas poor. We also analyse the dependance on environment of galaxy colours, luminosities, stellar masses, ages and star formations. We find that galaxies in high density regions are, on average, more luminous and massive than field galaxies up to z\sim 2. The fraction of red galaxies increases with luminosity and with density up to z\sim 1.2. At higher z this dependance on density disappears. The variation of galaxy properties as a function of redshift and density suggests that a significant change occurs at z\sim 1.5-2. We discuss the uncertainties and the systematic effects that exist in the estimates of the stellar masses of high redshift galaxies, using broad band photometry, and how they affect the deduced galaxy stellar mass function. We use at this purpose the latest version of the GOODS-MUSIC catalog. In particular, we discuss the impact of different synthetic models, of the assumed initial mass function and of the selection band. Using Charlot & Bruzual 2007 and Maraston 2005 models we find masses lower than those obtained from Bruzual & Charlot 2003 models. In addition, we find a slight trend as a function of the mass itself comparing these two mass determinations with that from Bruzual & Charlot 2003 models. As consequence, the derived galaxy stellar mass functions show diverse shapes, and their slope depends on the assumed models. Despite these differences, the overall results and scenario remains unchanged. The masses obtained with the assumption of the Chabrier initial mass function are in average 0.24 dex lower than those from the Salpeter assumption, at all redshifts, causing a shift of galaxy stellar mass function of the same amount. Aims: The aim of this work is to collect a complete, mass--selected sample of galaxies with very low specific star formation rate, for a comparison with the prediction of recent theoretical models. Method: We use the 24/K flux ratio, complemented by the SED fitting to the full 0.35-8.0 mum spectral distribution, to select quiescent galaxies from z~0.4 to z~4 in the GOODS--MUSIC sample. Our observational selection can be translated into thresholds on the specific star formation rate SFR/M_*, that can be used to compare with the theoretical predictions. Results: We find that, in the framework of the well known global decline of the quiescent fraction with redshift, a non-negligible fraction ~15-20% of massive galaxies with very low specific star formation rate exists up to z~4, including a tail of "Red&Dead" galaxies with SFR/M_*<10^{-11}/yr. Recent theoretical models vary to a large extent in the prediction of the fraction of galaxies with very low specific star formation rates, and are unable to provide a global match to our data., Comment: The replaced version matches the published one (typos corrected)

We have analyzed a sample of LBGs from z =3.5 to z=6 selected from the GOODS-S field as B,V and i-dropouts, and with spectroscopic observations showing that they have the Lyalpha line in emission. Our main aim is to investigate their physical properties and their dependence on the emission line characteristics, to shed light on the relation between galaxies with Lyalpha emission and the general LBG population.The objects were selected from their continuum colors and then spectroscopically confirmed by the GOODS collaboration and other campaigns. From the spectra we derived the line flux and EW. We then used U-band to mid-IR photometry from GOODS-MUSIC to derive the physical properties of the galaxies, such as total stellar mass, age and so on, through standard SED fitting techniques.Although most galaxies are fit by young stellar populations, a small but non negligible fraction has SEDs that require considerably older stellar component, up to 1 Gyr. There is no apparent relation between age and EW: some of the oldest galaxies have large EW, and should be also selected in narrow band surveys. Therefore not all Lyalpha emitters are primeval galaxies in the very early stages of formation,as is commonly assumed. We also find a large range of stellar populations, with masses from 5x10^8 Msol to 5x10^10 Msol and SFR from few to 60 Msol/yr. Although there is no correlation between mass and EW, we find a significant lack of massive galaxies with high EW, which could be explained if the most massive galaxies were more dusty and/or contained more neutral gas than less massive objects. Finally we find that more than half of the galaxies contain small but non negligible amounts of dust: the mean E(B-V) and the EW are well correlated, although with a large scatter, as already found at lower redshift, Comment: Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophyscis

We present a catalogue of overdensities in the GOODS-South field. We find various high density peaks that are embedded in structures diffused on the entire field, up to z ~ 2.5. The slope of their colour-magnitude relation does not show significative evolution with z. We find evidence that galaxies forming these structures are more massive than galaxies located in low density regions. We also analyse the variation of galaxy properties with the associated environmental density and we find that the segregation of red galaxies with density is stronger at low redshift and at high luminosities while it gets much weaker for increasing z., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. We study the evolution of the galaxy population up to z\sim3 as a function of its colour properties. In particular, luminosity functions and luminosity densities have been derived as a function of redshift for the blue/late and red/early populations. We use data from the GOODS-MUSIC catalogue which have typical magnitude limits z<26 and Ks<23.5 for most of the sample. About 8% of the galaxies have spectroscopic redshifts; the remaining have well calibrated photometric redshifts derived from the extremely wide multi-wavelength coverage in 14 bands (from the U band to the Spitzer 8 \mu m band). We have derived a catalogue of galaxies complete in rest-frame B-band, which has been divided in two subsamples according to their rest-frame U-V colour (or derived specific star formation rate, SSFR) properties. We confirm a bimodality in the U-V colour and SSFR of the galaxy sample up to z\sim 3. This bimodality is used to compute the LFs of the blue/late and red/early subsamples. The LFs of the blue/late and total samples are well represented by steep Schechter functions evolving in luminosity with increasing redshifts. The volume density of the LFs of the red/early populations decreases with increasing redshift. The shape of the red/early LFs shows an excess of faint red dwarfs with respect to the extrapolation of a flat Schechter function and can be represented by the sum of two Schechter functions. Our model for galaxy formation in the hierarchical clustering scenario, which also includes external feedback due to a diffuse UV background, shows a general broad agreement with the LFs of both populations, the larger discrepancies being present at the faint end for the red population. We report the discovery of a localized overdensity at z~1.6 in the GOODS-South Field, presumably a poor cluster in the process of formation. The three-dimensional galaxy density has been estimated on the basis of well calibrated photometric redshifts from the multiband photometric GOODS-MUSIC catalog using the (2+1)D technique. The density peak is embedded in the larger scale overdensity of galaxies known to exist at z=1.61 in the area. The properties of the member galaxies are compared to those of the surrounding field and we found that the two populations are significantly different supporting the reality of the structure. The reddest galaxies, once evolved according to their best fit models, have colors consistent with the red sequence of lower redshift clusters. The estimated M_200 total mass of the cluster is in the range 1.3 x 10^14 - 5.7x 10^14 Msun, depending on the assumed bias factor b. We have analysed the physical properties of z~4 Lyman Break Galaxies observed in the GOODS-S survey, in order to investigate the possible differences between galaxies where the Ly-alpha is present in emission, and those where the line is absent or in absorption. The objects have been selected from their optical color and then spectroscopically confirmed by Vanzella et al. (2005). From the public spectra we assessed the nature of the Ly-alpha emission and divided the sample into galaxies with Ly-alpha in emission and objects without Ly-alpha line (i.e. either absent or in absorption). We have then used the complete photometry, from U band to mid infrared from the GOODS-MUSIC database, to study the observational properties of the galaxies, such as UV spectral slopes and optical to mid-infrared colors, and the possible differences between the two samples. Finally through standard spectral fitting tecniques we have determined the physical properties of the galaxies, such as total stellar mass, stellar ages and so on, and again we have studied the possible differences between the two samples. Our results indicate that LBG with Ly-alpha in emission are on average a much younger and less massive population than the LBGs without Ly-alpha emission. Both populations are forming stars very actively and are relatively dust free, although those with line emission seem to be even less dusty on average. The classification scheme for high redshift galaxies is complex at the present time, with simple colour selection criteria, resulting in ill-defined properties regarding stellar mass and star formation rate for these distant galaxies. The goal of this work is to investigate the properties of different classes of high-z galaxies, focusing in particular on the Stellar Masses of LBGs, DRGs and BzKs, in order to derive their contribution to the total mass budget of the distant Universe. We have used the GOODS-MUSIC catalog, containing ~3000 Ks-selected (~10000 z-selected) galaxies with multi-wavelength coverage extending from the U band to the Spitzer 8 micron band, with spectroscopic or accurate photometric redshifts. We have selected samples of BM/BX/LBGs, DRGs and BzK galaxies, discussed the overlap and the limitations of these criteria, which can be overcome with a selection criterion based on physical parameters. We have then measured the stellar masses of these galaxies and computed the Stellar Mass Density (SMD) for the different samples up to redshift ~4. We show that the BzK-PE criterion is not optimal to select early type galaxies at the faint end. BzK-SF, on the other hand, is highly contaminated by passively evolving galaxies at red z-Ks colours. We find that LBGs and DRGs contribute almost equally to the global SMD at z>2 and in general that star forming galaxies form a substantial fraction of the universal SMD. Passively evolving galaxies show a strong negative density evolution from redshift 2 to 3, indicating that we are witnessing the epoch of mass assembly of such objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. The goal of this work is to measure the evolution of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function and of the resulting Stellar Mass Density up to redshift ~4, in order to study the assembly of massive galaxies in the high redshift Universe. We have used the GOODS-MUSIC catalog, containing ~3000 Ks-selected galaxies with multi-wavelength coverage extending from the U band to the Spitzer 8 micron band, of which 27% have spectroscopic redshifts and the remaining fraction have accurate photometric redshifts. On this sample we have applied a standard fitting procedure to measure stellar masses. We compute the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function and the resulting Stellar Mass Density up to redshift ~4, taking into proper account the biases and incompleteness effects. Within the well known trend of global decline of the Stellar Mass Density with redshift, we show that the decline of the more massive galaxies may be described by an exponential timescale of ~6 Gyrs up to z~1.5, and proceeds much faster thereafter, with an exponential timescale of ~0.6 Gyrs. We also show that there is some evidence for a differential evolution of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function, with low mass galaxies evolving faster than more massive ones up to z~1-1.5 and that the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function remains remarkably flat (i.e. with a slope close to the local one) up to z~1-1.3. The observed behaviour of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function is consistent with a scenario where about 50% of present-day massive galaxies formed at a vigorous rate in the epoch between redshift 4 and 1.5, followed by a milder evolution until the present-day epoch., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A. We investigate the effect of AGN feedback associated to the bright QSO phase onto the color distribution of galaxies from z=0 up to z=4. To this aim, we insert a blast-wave model of AGN feedback in our semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, which includes the growth of supermassive black holes and the AGN activity triggered by interactions of the host galaxies. The AGN feedback is directly related to the impulsive, luminous quasar phase. We test our model by checking the consistency of its results against i) the QSO luminosity functions from z=0 to z=4; ii) the observed local relation between the black hole mass m_{BH} and the mass of the host galaxy. At low redshift the inclusion of AGN feedback enhances the number of red bright galaxies, so that the color distribution of M_r<-22 objects is entirely dominated by red (u-r>1.5) galaxies; at 0.5< z< 2 it yields rest-frame U-V color distribution in agreement with existing observations. In the range z=1.5-2.5, we find that 31% of galaxies contribute to the EROs population with m_K<20 (Vega system); at such a magnitude, the model yields an EROs surface density of 6.3 10^3 /deg^2 matching existing data; about 80 % of the above density is contributed by passive galaxies with old stellar populations. Extending our analysis to z=4, the model matches the observed surface density 1.5 10^3 /deg^2 of DRGs at m_K=20; such a population is predicted to be dominated by galaxies with old stellar populations for z>2.5., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a high quality multiwavelength (from 0.3 to 8.0 micron) catalog of the large and deep area in the GOODS Southern Field covered by the deep near-IR observations obtained with the ESO VLT. The catalog is entirely based on public data: in our analysis, we have included the F435W, F606W, F775W and F850LP ACS images, the JHKs VLT data, the Spitzer data provided by IRAC instrument (3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 micron), and publicly available U-band data from the 2.2ESO and VLT-VIMOS. We describe in detail the procedures adopted to obtain this multiwavelength catalog. In particular, we developed a specific software for the accurate "PSF-matching" of space and ground-based images of different resolution and depth (ConvPhot), of which we analyse performances and limitations. We have included both z-selected, as well as Ks-selected objects, yielding a unique, self-consistent catalog. The largest fraction of the sample is 90% complete at z~26 or Ks~23.8 (AB scale). Finally, we cross-correlated our data with all the spectroscopic catalogs available to date, assigning a spectroscopic redshift to more than 1000 sources. The final catalog is made up of 14847 objects, at least 72 of which are known stars, 68 are AGNs, and 928 galaxies with spectroscopic redshift (668 galaxies with reliable redshift determination). We applied our photometric redshift code to this data set, and the comparison with the spectroscopic sample shows that the quality of the resulting photometric redshifts is excellent, with an average scatter of only 0.06. We use the GOODS-MUSIC sample, a catalog of ~3000 Ks-selected galaxies based on VLT and HST observation of the GOODS-South field with extended multi-wavelength coverage (from 0.3 to 8 micron) and accurate estimates of the photometric redshifts to select 179 DRGs with J-Ks>1.3 in an area of 135 sq. arcmin. We first show that the J-Ks>1.3 criterion selects a rather heterogeneous sample of galaxies, going from the targeted high-redshift luminous evolved systems, to a significant fraction of lower redshift (1

We show how the observed bimodality in the color distribution of galaxies can be explained in the framework of the hierarchical clustering picture in terms of the interplay between the properties of the merging histories and the feedback/star-formation processes in the progenitors of local galaxies. Using a semi-analytic model of hierarchical galaxy formation, we compute the color distributions of galaxies with different luminosities and compare them with the observations. Our fiducial model matches the fundamental properties of the observed distributions, namely: 1) the distribution of objects brighter than M_r = -18 is clearly bimodal, with a fraction of red objects increasing with luminosity; 2) for objects brighter than M_r = -21 the color distribution is dominated by red objects with color u-r = 2.2-2.4; 3) the spread on the distribution of the red population is smaller than that of the blue population; 4) the fraction of red galaxies is larger in denser environments, even for low-luminosity objects; 5) the bimodality in the distribution persists up to z = 1.5. We have explored the redshift evolution of the luminosity function of red and blue galaxies up to $z=3.5$. This was possible joining a deep I band composite galaxy sample, which includes the spectroscopic K20 sample and the HDFs samples, with the deep $H_{AB}=26$ and $K_{AB}=25$ samples derived from the deep NIR images of the Hubble Deep Fields North and South, respectively. About 30% of the sample has spectroscopic redshifts and the remaining fraction well-calibrated photometric redshifts. This allowed to select and measure galaxies in the rest-frame blue magnitude up to $z\sim 3$ and to derive the redshift evolution of the B-band luminosity function of galaxies separated by their rest-frame $U-V$ color or specific (i.e. per unit mass) star-formation rate. The class separation was derived from passive evolutionary tracks or from their observed bimodal distributions. Both distributions appear bimodal at least up to $z\sim 2$ and the locus of red/early galaxies is clearly identified up to these high redshifts. Both luminosity and density evolutions are needed to describe the cosmological behaviour of the red/early and blue/late populations. The density evolution is greater for the early population with a decrease by one order of magnitude at $z\sim 2-3$ with respect to the value at $z\sim 0.4$. The luminosity densities of the early and late type galaxies with $M_B<-20.6$ appear to have a bifurcation at $z>1$. Indeed while star-forming galaxies slightly increase or keep constant their luminosity density, "early" galaxies decrease in their luminosity density by a factor $\sim 5-6$ from $z\sim 0.4$ to $z\sim 2.5-3$. A comparison with one of the latest versions of the hierarchical CDM models shows a broad agreement with the observed number and luminosity density evolutions of both populations., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a detailed analysis of the stellar mass content of galaxies up to z=2.5 in the K20 galaxy sample, that has a 92% spectroscopic completeness and a complete $UBVRIzJK_s$ multicolor coverage. We find that the M/L ratio decreases with redshift: in particular, the average M/L ratio of early type galaxies decreases with $z$, with a scatter that is indicative of a range of star--formation time-scales and redshift of formation. More important, the typical M/L of massive early type galaxies is larger than that of less massive ones, suggesting that their stellar population formed at higher z. The final K20 galaxy sample spans a range of stellar masses from M*=10^9Msun to M*=10^12Msun, with massive galaxies ($M*>10^11Msun) detected up to z~2. We compute the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function at various z, of which we observe only a mild evolution (i.e. by 20-30%) up to z~1. At z>1, the evolution of the GSMF appears to be much faster: at z~2, about 35% of the present day stellar mass in objects with M*~10^11Msun appear to have assembled. We also detect a change in the physical nature of the most massive galaxies, since at z>1 a population of massive star--forming galaxies progressively appears. We finally analyze our results in the framework of Lambda-CDM hierarchical models. First, we show that the large number of massive galaxies detected at high z does not violate any fundamental Lambda-CDM constraint based on the number of massive DM halos. Then, we compare our results with the predictions of renditions of both semianalytic and hydro-dynamical models, that range from severe underestimates to slight overestimates of the observed mass density at z<~2. We present an estimate of the cosmological evolution of the field galaxy luminosity function (LF) in the rest frame 4400 Angstrom B -band up to redshift z=3.5. To this purpose, we use a composite sample of 1541 I--selected galaxies selected down to I_(AB)=27.2 and 138 galaxies selected down to K_(AB)=25 from ground-based and HST multicolor surveys, most notably the new deep JHK images in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) taken with the ISAAC instrument at the ESO-VLT telescope. About 21% of the sample has spectroscopic redshifts, and the remaining fraction well calibrated photometric redshifts. The resulting blue LF shows little density evolution at the faint end with respect to the local values, while at the bright end (M_B(AB)<-20) a brightening increasing with redshift is apparent with respect to the local LF. Hierarchical CDM models overpredict the number of faint galaxies by about a factor 3 at z=1. At the bright end the predicted LFs are in reasonable agreement only at low and intermediate redshifts (z=1), but fail to reproduce the pronounced brightening observed in the high redshift (z=2-3) LF. We present near-IR images of six passive galaxies (SSFR< 10(exp -2)/ Gyr) at redshift 1.3 < z < 2.4 with stellar mass M approximately 10(exp 11) solar M, selected from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the WFC3/IR camera. These images provide the deepest and highest angular resolution view of the optical rest-frame morphology of such systems to date. We find that the light profile of these galaxies is generally regular and well described by a Sersic model with index typical of today's spheroids. We confirm the existence of compact and massive early-type galaxies at z approximately 2: four out of six galaxies have r(sub e) approximately 1 kpc or less. The images reach limiting surface brightness mu approximates 26.5 mag/square arcsec in the F160W bandpass; yet there is no evidence of a faint halo in the galaxies of our sample, even in their stacked image. We also find very weak "morphological k-correction" in the galaxies between the rest-frame UV (from the ACS z-band), and the rest-frame optical (WFC3 H-band): the visual classification, Sersic indices and physical sizes of these galaxies are independent or only mildly dependent on the wavelength, within the errors. The presence of an active nucleus is suspected in two out of six galaxies (33%), opening the intriguing possibility that a large, presently unaccounted population of AGN is hosted in these galaxies, possibly responsible for the cessation of star formation.
