We examined 82 fresh fecal samples from American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) at San Pablo Autopan, Toluca Valley, central Mexico, December 2021 to April 2022. Eggs of Contracaecum spp. were observed in 100%, Capillaria spp. in two (2.5%), Strongyloides spp. in eight (9.7%), and coccidial oocysts in 12 (15%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) was initially introduced to North America from Europe in XVII century, along with its diseases. Infections by parasites of the genera Eimeria and Isospora affect the intestinal tract and produce enteric disease in wild and domestic birds. Worldwide, at least 5 Eimeria spp. have been described in the domestic pigeon. Here we provide the first description of E. columbarum sporulated oocysts in faecal samples of domestic pigeons from Toluca City, Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bacterium Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is associated with respiratory disease in wild birds and poultry. In this study, the phylogenetic analysis of nine reference strains of O. rhinotracheale belonging to serovars A to I, and eight Mexican isolates belonging to serovar A, was performed. The analysis was extended to include sequences from another 23 strains available in the public domain. The analysis showed that the 40 sequences formed six clusters, I to VI. All eight Mexican field isolates were placed in cluster I. One of the reference strains appears to present genetic diversity not previously recognized and was placed in a new genetic cluster. In conclusion, the phylogenetic analysis of O. rhinotracheale strains, based on the 16S rRNA gene, is a suitable tool for epidemiologic studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, aquaculture has attained a major economic revolution, however, infectious diseases of bacterial, viral, mycotic and parasitic origin are the most significant restrictive agents in the improvement of intensified aquaculture, which has become a fast blooming seafood industry. For environment-friendly aquaculture and human health concerns owing to the rise in incidences of antimicrobial resistant microbes and food safety hazards, the immunoprophylaxis or vaccination strategies are highly effective and economical in protecting the health of fish and aquaculture animals from various infectious agents. Advancements in science have paved newer avenues in both basic and applied research areas for developing and designing novel and effective vaccines, as well as improving existing vaccines for rendering protection from various types of infectious diseases. Current advances in vaccines and vaccinology offer valuable opportunities to discover new vaccine candidates to combat fish pathogens, including mycotic and parasitic agents, for which vaccines are still lacking. This review focuses on the current knowledge, recent advances and future perspectives of vaccines and vaccination in the aquaculture industry, from traditional inactivated and attenuated vaccines to new generation vaccines comprising of recombinant, subunit, vectored, genetically engineered, DNA and peptide vaccines, reverse vaccinology and plant-based edible vaccines, and nanovaccines. The article presents a study which examines the molecular characterization of the VP1 gene of an isolate of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) found in Mexico. These viruses have been characterized into 2 serogroups and 9 serotypes. For the study, researchers compared the Mexican IPNV isolates from Europe, North America and Asia. They found that the isolate is closely associated with genetically to the 2310 strain from Spain.

En este trabajo se revisan los conceptos básicos de las interacciones entre un hospedero y un microorganismo en el contexto de la patogenia microbiana. Se presenta la teoría de Casadevall y Pirofski, que se basa en el daño provocado al hospedero como resultado patológico de la interacción. Además, se proponen algunos conceptos que permiten mejor comprensión de estas interacciones. La necrosis pancreática infecciosa (NPI) constituye una enfermedad viral importante que afecta a los salmónidos. En la trucha arco iris (Oncorhynchus mykiss) el agente etiológico, un birnavirus, causa enfermedad letal en crías y alevines. Los peces que sobreviven actúan como portadores del virus en estadios de edad más avanzados, éstos pueden diseminar el agente causal o transmitirlo de manera vertical a su progenie. La identificación de truchas con NPI o la detección viral en peces infectados es importante para controlar la diseminación del virus. Esta enfermedad, de distribución mundial, ha sido identificada recientemente en México. En el presente trabajo se revisa de manera exhaustiva y sistemática la información relacionada con la epizootiología, prevención y control de dicha enfermedad. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present paper, basic concepts of the host-microorganism interactions in the microbial pathogenesis are reviewed. The formal theory of Casadevall and Pirofski, based on the damage done to the host as the outcome of pathologic interactions, is presented. Furthermore, some additional concepts for a better comprehension of these interactions are proposed. Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is an important viral disease of salmonids. In the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) an etiological agent, a birnavirus causes a lethal disease in fry and fingerling. Survivors act as asymptomatic carriers at other life stages, which may shed the etiologic agent, or transmit it vertically to their progeny. Diagnosis of IPN-diseased and detection of infected trouts are important for controlling the spread of the virus. The IPN is worldwide distributed, being recently identified in Mexico. In the present paper the epizootiology, prevention and control of this disease are reviewed in an exhaustive and systematical manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) have been described mainly in bacteria, but are known to occur in temperate phages. Prevalence of the qnrB, qnrA and blaTEM genes was identified in Escherichia coli strains and temperate phages by lytic cycle induction. From a total of 48 samples collected from drinking water, wastewater and sewer water in slaughterhouses in the State of Mexico, Mexico, 37 contained E. coli isolates. Resistance was highest to tetracycline (32/37; 86.4 %), followed by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (19/37; 51.3 %) and ampicillin and nalidixic acid (18/37; 48.6 %). Prevalence of the blaTEM gene was 37.8 % in the bacterial isolates and 3.5 % in the phage isolates. The bacterial isolates contained 8.1 % qnrA and 29.7 % qnrB genes, while the phage isolates contained 2.7 and 24.3 %, respectively. Presence of ARG in the bacterial isolates was linked to phage DNA, highlighting the significant role it plays in the spread of ARG in the studied slaughterhouses.
