Robotic technologies are affording opportunities to revolutionize the production of specialty crops (fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, and horticulture). They offer the potential to automate tasks and save inputs such as labor, fertilizer, and pesticides. Specialty crops are well known for their high economic value and nutritional benefits, making their production particularly impactful. While previous review papers have discussed the evolution of agricultural robots in a general agricultural context, this review uniquely focuses on their application to specialty crops, a rapidly expanding area. Therefore, we aimed to develop a state-of-the-art review to scientifically contribute to the understanding of the following: (i) the primary areas of robots' application for specialty crops; (ii) the specific benefits they offer; (iii) their current limitations; and (iv) opportunities for future investigation. We formulated a comprehensive search strategy, leveraging Scopus ® and Web of Science™ as databases and selecting "robot" and "specialty crops" as the main keywords. To follow a critical screening process, only peer-reviewed research papers were considered, resulting in the inclusion of 907 papers covering the period from 1988 to 2024. Each paper was thoroughly evaluated based on its title, abstract, keywords, methods, conclusions, and declarations. Our analysis revealed that interest in agricultural robots for specialty crops has significantly increased over the past decade, mainly driven by technological advancements in computer vision and recognition systems. Harvesting robots have arisen as the primary focus. Robots for spraying, pruning, weed control, pollination, transplanting, and fertilizing are emerging subjects to be addressed in further research and development (R&D) strategies. Ultimately, our findings serve to reveal the dynamics of agricultural robots in the world of specialty crops while supporting suitable practices for more sustainable and resilient agriculture, indicating a new era of innovation and efficiency in agriculture.

Photoaging is the premature aging of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to solar radiation. The visual alterations manifest as wrinkles, reduced skin elasticity, uneven skin tone, as well as other signs that surpass the expected outcomes of natural aging. Beyond these surface changes, there is a complex interplay of molecular alterations, encompassing shifts in cellular function, DNA damage, and protein composition disruptions. This data descriptor introduces a unique dataset derived from ten individuals, each with a minimum of 18 years of professional experience as a driver, who are asymmetrically and chronically exposed to solar radiation due to their driving orientation. Skin samples were independently collected from each side of the face using a microdermabrasion-like procedure and analyzed on an Exploris 240 mass spectrometer. Our adapted proteomic statistical framework leverages the sample pairing to provide robust insights. This dataset delves into the molecular differences in exposed skin and serves as a foundational resource for interdisciplinary research in photodermatology, targeted skincare treatments, and computational modelling of skin health., (© 2024. Low sphincter pressure and inability of the crural diaphragm to elevate it at the esophagogastric junction are important pathophysiological mechanisms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The object of this study was to depict how Nissen fundoplication changed the resting and inspiratory pressures of the anti-reflux barrier. We selected 14 patients (eight males; mean age 42.7 years; mean body mass index 27.8) for surgery. They answered symptoms questionnaires and underwent high-resolution manometry (HRM) before and 6 months after Nissen fundoplication. We used a standard manometric protocol (resting and liquid swallows) and assessment of esophagogastric junction (EGJ) pressure metrics during standardized forced inspiratory maneuvers against increasing loads (Threshold Maneuvers). We used the Wilcoxon test for comparison of pre and postoperative data. After fundoplication, heartburn and regurgitation scores diminished remarkably (from 4.5 and 2, respectively, to zero; P = 0.002 and P = 0.0005, respective medians). Also, the median expiratory EGJ pressure had a significant increase from 8.1 to 18.1 mmHg (P = 0.002), while mean respiratory pressure and EGJ contractility integral (EGJ-CI) increased without statistical significance (P = 0.064 and P = 0.06, respectively). Axial EGJ displacement was lower after fundoplication. The EGJ relaxation pressure (P = 0.001), the mean distal esophageal intrabolus pressure (P = 0.01) and the distal latency (P = 0.017) increased after fundoplication. There was a reduction in the contraction front velocity (P = 0.043). During evaluation with standardized inspiratory maneuvers, the inspiratory EGJ pressures (under loads of 12, 24, 36 and 48 cmH2O) were lower after surgery for all loads (median for load 12 cmH2O: 145.6 vs. 102.7 mmHg; P = 0.004). Fundoplication and hiatal closure increased the expiratory EGJ pressure and promoted a great GERD symptom relief. Complex protein mixtures typically generate many tandem mass spectra produced by different peptides coisolated in the gas phase. Widely adopted proteomic data analysis environments usually fail to identify most of these spectra, succeeding at best in identifying only one of the multiple cofragmenting peptides. We present PatternLab V (PLV), an updated version of PatternLab that integrates the YADA 3 deconvolution algorithm to handle such cases efficiently. In general, we expect an increase of 10% in spectral identifications when dealing with complex proteomic samples. PLV is freely available at http://patternlabforproteomics.org.

Background: Nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis is found in most obese patients and has a strong association with metabolic syndrome. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and the sleeve gastrectomy are the two techniques of bariatric surgery. Patients who underwent bariatric surgery have regression of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis due to a reduction in body mass index and changes in incretin hormones., Aims: This study aimed to analyze the acuity of elastography in the regression of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in obese patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy 2 months after surgery., Methods: Patients in the preoperative period of bariatric surgery underwent an anthropometric evaluation and hepatic elastography to quantify fibrosis and hepatic steatosis. Two months after surgery, the same evaluation was performed again., Results: All 17 patients who met the inclusion criteria participated in the study. Out of this, nine underwent sleeve gastrectomy, and eight underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass group had lower fibrosis levels postoperatively compared to preoperatively (p=0.029, p<0.05). As for steatosis, patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass had lower postoperative values (p=0.01, p<0.05). There was also a reduction in fibrosis postoperatively in the sleeve gastrectomy group compared to preoperatively (p=0.037, p<0.05)., Conclusions: Elastography accurately demonstrated decreased hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in the early postoperative period of bariatric surgery. Moreover, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are suitable surgical methods to improve hepatic steatosis and fibrosis within 2 months postoperatively.

Combined effects of gamma irradiation (0, 3, 6 and 9 kGy) and aging (1 and 14 days) on quality attributes of vacuum-packaged beef from Nellore cattle were evaluated. The meat water holding capacity was affected by irradiation, increasing (p < 0.05) purge and cooking loss regardless of the dose used. Irradiation negatively affected myofibrillar fragmentation, but samples irradiated at 9 kGy had (p < 0.05) higher soluble collagen and lower shear force values. The meat metmyoglobin reducing activity was reduced (p < 0.05) by the irradiation process, inducing the metmyoglobin accumulation with increasing dose applied. Samples irradiated at 9 kGy presented (p < 0.05) higher lipid oxidation and lower oxymyoglobin proportion and color redness and chroma values. It was concluded that irradiation at 9 kGy combined with aging can be used as an effective tool for improving the tenderness of Nellore beef, but resulted in a discoloration of the beef., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. This study evaluated the use of gamma irradiation (3, 6 and 9 kGy) in frozen vacuum-packed beef and subsequent thawing and aging for up to 14 days. The effects on tenderness, color, and oxidative properties were determined and compared to non-irradiated controls for frozen/thawed and chilled vacuum-packed beef. The combined irradiation and freezing/thawing processes increased total exudate loss and reduced the meat water-holding capacity, regardless of the dose used. Myofibrillar fragmentation was favored by the freezing/thawing processes and negatively affected by irradiation. Lower shear force values were observed in the non-irradiated frozen/thawed samples. Frozen samples irradiated at 9 kGy had a higher percentage of soluble collagen, lipid peroxidation, and a more reddish color tone. The meat reducing capacity and oxygen consumption were reduced by freezing and further by irradiation, which also included accumulation of metmyoglobin. It was concluded that irradiation of frozen meat and its subsequent thawing and aging does not confer any additional advantages for beef technological quality., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The minimally invasive abdominal surgery has evolved to reduce portals, culminating with a single incision and natural orifice operation. However, these methods are still expensive, difficult to implement and with questionable aesthetic results., Aim: To present the standardization and preliminary results of a technique for performing laparoscopic suprapubic access by the principle which was called the Supra Pubic Endoscopic Surgery for cholecystectomy., Method: The average body mass index of patients, the mean operative time, clinical data of the postoperative complications and quality of life were prospectively studied. The operation incisions consisted of: A) umbilical for instrumental dissection and clipping; B) in the right groin for handling and gallbladder gripping; C) suprapubic for the camera. With the patient in reverse Trendelenburg and left lateral decubitus, the operation flew by the camera trocar in C, proceeding with dissection and isolation of the biliary pedicle, identification of cystic duct and artery, with usual instrumentation. Transcystic intraoperative cholangiography was performed in all cases in which there were indications. The procedure was completed with clipping and sectioning of the cystic duct and artery, retrograde resection of the gallbladder and extracting it by the umbilical trocar incision under direct vision., Results: Thirty patients undergone this surgical procedure between March and June 2012 and were evaluated. The mean age was 40.7 years and the indications were typical biliary colic in 18 cases (60 %), cholecystitis in five cases (16.6 %), biliary pancreatitis in one case (3.3%); polyp in three cases (10%) and obstructive jaundice at three cases (10%). The average body mass index was 27.8 (23.1-35.1) and surgical time ranged between 24 and 70 minutes., Conclusion: The technique proved to be feasible and safe , with no significant complications, and satisfactory cosmetic results.

Unlabelled: Multiple intracranial meningiomas (MIM) are a rare pathology when not associated with neurofibromatosis. The prevalence rate of those tumors varied from 2.3 to 8.9% of all intracranial meningiomas., Objective: To present, analyze and discuss the cases of seven patients diagnosed with multiple intracranial meningiomas, describing their clinical and histological characteristics, as well as their biological behavior., Method: The patients records, surgical descriptions, imaging studies and the histopathological exams were retrospectively reviewed. This is the largest series of MIM publisted in Brazil., Results: This sample consists of five women and two men. The age varied from 42 to 84 (average 53.8). Twenty-two meningiomas were identified and varied from 1.5 to 192 cm(3), with an 62.8 cm(3) average volume. The number of procedures varied from 1 to 5 per patient. No surgical death occurred in this series., Conclusion: Despite the multiplicity of tumors, number of recurrences, the new tumors, repeated operations and re-operations, radiotherapy and a number of postoperative complications, the patients experienced a long survival in conjunction with a fairly good quality of life.

Purpose: To identify the lymph nodes positioned along the internal mammary vessels in isolated sternum of human cadaver and to standardize the surgical approach to those nodes, in order to establish anatomical landmarks to be used with the current techniques of mammary gland sentinel lymph node detection., Methods: Ten sternum plates removed from unclaimed cadavers were used in this study. Sternal plates were removed using bilateral incisions of the ribs at the midclavicular lines. The characterization of the internal mammary vessels and the anatomical integrity of the parietal pleura were indispensable requirements during the procedure., Results: A total of 29 lymph nodes were removed from the 2nd (13) and the 3rd (16) intercostals spaces. Almost 50% of all nodes collected were located medially to the vessels., Conclusion: The approach used is a reliable surgical technique for removing lymph node from sternal plates. The model is therefore valuable for breast surgeons training in sentinel node biopsy, an important procedure for breast cancer patients.

This work has evaluated the clastogenicity of six extracts (tea and aqueous extract of leaves, tea, aqueous and methanolic extracts of dried fruit, and tea of unripe fruit) obtained from Crotalaria retusa L. and three extracts (tea and methanolic extract of dried fruit, and tea of unripe fruit) obtained from Crotalaria mucronata Desv. The extracts were injected intraperitoneally into mice, and the animals were killed 24 h after treatment for preparation of bone marrow cells. The extracts obtained from fruits of Crotalaria retusa were found to cause a dose-dependent increase in the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in mice. On the other hand, no statistically significant increase in the frequency of aberrant cells was observed for the animals treated with leaf extracts obtained from Crotalaria retusa and with extracts from fruits of Crotalaria mucronata. The possibility that the pyrrolizidine alkaloid, monocrotaline, present in Crotalaria retusa exerts a clastogenic effect on mouse bone marrow cells is discussed. Our conclusion is based on studies using intraperitoneal treatments. Effects of oral exposure to extracts of Crotalaria retusa are unknown.

Toxicological and toxicogenetic effects of aqueous (tea) and hexanic fruit extract of Indigofera suffruticosa Mill. and hydroalcoholic root extract of Solanum agrarium Stendt. were evaluated in Balb C male mice intraperitoneally exposed. A hepatotoxic effect was observed just for animals treated with aqueous fruit extract of I. suffruticosa. In relation to the toxicogenetic effect, just the group treated with 12.5% of toxic dose of aqueous fruit extract of I. suffruticosa showed a statistically significant increase in the frequency of cells with chromosome aberrations (cytogenetic effect), although a slight increase was also observed for the highest dose (25% of LD50) of hydroalcoholic root extract of S. agrarium. The results obtained show that before S. agrarium is used as medicine and before the wide use of I. suffruticosa in cattle food, careful evaluation must be done.
