Search

One of the main problems in astrochemistry is determining the amount of sulfur in volatiles and refractories in the interstellar medium. The detection of the main sulfur reservoirs (icy H$_2$S and atomic gas) has been challenging, and estimates are based on the reliability of models to account for the abundances of species containing less than 1% of the total sulfur. The high sensitivity of the James Webb Space Telescope provides an unprecedented opportunity to estimate the sulfur abundance through the observation of the [S I] 25.249 $\mu$m line. We used the [S III] 18.7 $\mu$m, [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m, and [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m lines to estimate the amount of sulfur in the ionized and molecular gas along the Orion Bar. For the theoretical part, we used an upgraded version of the Meudon photodissociation region (PDR) code to model the observations. New inelastic collision rates of neutral atomic sulfur with ortho- and para- molecular hydrogen were calculated to predict the line intensities. The [S III] 18.7 $\mu$m and [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m lines are detected over the imaged region with a shallow increase (by a factor of 4) toward the HII region. We estimate a moderate sulfur depletion, by a factor of $\sim$2, in the ionized gas. The corrugated interface between the molecular and atomic phases gives rise to several edge-on dissociation fronts we refer to as DF1, DF2, and DF3. The [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is only detected toward DF2 and DF3, the dissociation fronts located farthest from the HII region. The detailed modeling of DF3 using the Meudon PDR code shows that the emission of the [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is coming from warm ($>$ 40 K) molecular gas located at A$_{\rm V}$ $\sim$ 1$-$5 mag from the ionization front. Moreover, the intensity of the [S l] 25.249 $\mu$m line is only accounted for if we assume the presence of undepleted sulfur., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. Mid-infrared emission features probe the properties of ionized gas, and hot or warm molecular gas. The Orion Bar is a frequently studied photodissociation region (PDR) containing large amounts of gas under these conditions, and was observed with the MIRI IFU aboard JWST as part of the "PDRs4All" program. The resulting IR spectroscopic images of high angular resolution (0.2") reveal a rich observational inventory of mid-IR emission lines, and spatially resolve the substructure of the PDR, with a mosaic cutting perpendicularly across the ionization front and three dissociation fronts. We extracted five spectra that represent the ionized, atomic, and molecular gas layers, and measured the most prominent gas emission lines. An initial analysis summarizes the physical conditions of the gas and the potential of these data. We identified around 100 lines, report an additional 18 lines that remain unidentified, and measured the line intensities and central wavelengths. The H I recombination lines originating from the ionized gas layer bordering the PDR, have intensity ratios that are well matched by emissivity coefficients from H recombination theory, but deviate up to 10% due contamination by He I lines. We report the observed emission lines of various ionization stages of Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar, Fe, and Ni, and show how certain line ratios vary between the five regions. We observe the pure-rotational H$_2$ lines in the vibrational ground state from 0-0 S(1) to 0-0 S(8), and in the first vibrationally excited state from 1-1 S(5) to 1-1 S(9). We derive H$_2$ excitation diagrams, and approximate the excitation with one thermal (~700 K) component representative of an average gas temperature, and one non-thermal component (~2700 K) probing the effect of UV pumping. We compare these results to an existing model for the Orion Bar PDR and highlight the differences with the observations., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. In this work, tilted source solutions in both Einstein-Hilbert General Relativity (GR) and Quadratic Gravity (QG) for the anisotropic Bianchi V model are addressed. Since the excellent CMBR match of Starobinsky's inflation with Planck's team measurements data, QG has acquired a prominent status in the effective sense, for sufficiently strong gravity fields. The main interest is in the numeric time evolution to the past towards the singularity and the behavior of the kinematic variables, vorticity, acceleration, and the expansion of this source substance. In QG we found that for universes with higher and smaller matter densities fall into the Kasner or isotropic singularity attractors to the past, respectively. We also found that the Kasner singularity attractor to the past has always zero vorticity, for both GR and QG theories. While for QG the isotropic singularity attractor may have divergent vorticity. For the set of assumptions and conditions supposed in this work, the isotropic singularity attractor, favors QG as compared to GR. Only in QG we were able to find a geometric singularity with divergences in all of the kinematic variables of the substance, decreasing to finite values to the future, upon time reversing. That is, we obtained an initial kinematic singularity substance, that approaches a perfect fluid source., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, impacting planet formation within the disks. We report JWST and Atacama Large Millimetere Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modelling their kinematics and excitation allows us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantify the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation, finding it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

We present a two-dimensional study of the gas distribution, excitation and kinematics of the OH absorber galaxy IRAS 19154+2704 using Gemini GMOS-IFU observations. Its continuum image shows a disturbed morphology indicative of a past or on-going interaction. The ionised gas emission presents two kinematic components: a narrow ($\sigma\lesssim$300 km s$^{-1}$) component that may be tracing the gas orbiting in the galaxy potential and a broad ($\sigma\gtrsim$500 km s$^{-1}$) component which is produced by an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) driven outflow, with velocities reaching $-$500 km s$^{-1}$ which may exceed the escape velocity of the galaxy. The emission-line ratios and BPT diagrams confirm that the gas excitation in the inner $\sim$2 kpc is mainly due the AGN, while in regions farther away, a contribution from star formation is observed. We estimate a mass outflow rate of $\dot{M}_{\rm out}=4.0\pm2.6$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ at a distance of 850 pc from the nucleus. The corresponding outflow kinetic power $\dot{E}_{\rm out} = (2.5\pm1.6)\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, is only $3\times10^{-4}$ L$_{\rm bol}$ (the AGN luminosity), but the large mass-outflow rate, if kept for a $\sim$10 Myr AGN lifecycle, will expel $\approx10^8$ M$_\odot$ in ionised gas alone. This is the 6th of a series of papers in which we have investigated the kinematics of ULIRGS, most of which are interacting galaxies showing OH Megamasers. IRAS19154 shows the strongest signatures of an active AGN, supporting an evolutionary scenario: interactions trigger AGN that fully appear in the most advanced stages of the interaction., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

(Abridged) We investigate the impact of radiative feedback from massive stars on their natal cloud and focus on the transition from the HII region to the atomic PDR (crossing the ionisation front (IF)), and the subsequent transition to the molecular PDR (crossing the dissociation front (DF)). We use high-resolution near-IR integral field spectroscopic data from NIRSpec on JWST to observe the Orion Bar PDR as part of the PDRs4All JWST Early Release Science Program. The NIRSpec data reveal a forest of lines including, but not limited to, HeI, HI, and CI recombination lines, ionic lines, OI and NI fluorescence lines, Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs including aromatic CH, aliphatic CH, and their CD counterparts), CO2 ice, pure rotational and ro-vibrational lines from H2, and ro-vibrational lines HD, CO, and CH+, most of them detected for the first time towards a PDR. Their spatial distribution resolves the H and He ionisation structure in the Huygens region, gives insight into the geometry of the Bar, and confirms the large-scale stratification of PDRs. We observe numerous smaller scale structures whose typical size decreases with distance from Ori C and IR lines from CI, if solely arising from radiative recombination and cascade, reveal very high gas temperatures consistent with the hot irradiated surface of small-scale dense clumps deep inside the PDR. The H2 lines reveal multiple, prominent filaments which exhibit different characteristics. This leaves the impression of a "terraced" transition from the predominantly atomic surface region to the CO-rich molecular zone deeper in. This study showcases the discovery space created by JWST to further our understanding of the impact radiation from young stars has on their natal molecular cloud and proto-planetary disk, which touches on star- and planet formation as well as galaxy evolution., Comment: 52 pages, 30 figures, submitted to A&A

The JWST has captured the most detailed and sharpest infrared images ever taken of the inner region of the Orion Nebula, the nearest massive star formation region, and a prototypical highly irradiated dense photo-dissociation region (PDR). We investigate the fundamental interaction of far-ultraviolet photons with molecular clouds. The transitions across the ionization front (IF), dissociation front (DF), and the molecular cloud are studied at high-angular resolution. These transitions are relevant to understanding the effects of radiative feedback from massive stars and the dominant physical and chemical processes that lead to the IR emission that JWST will detect in many Galactic and extragalactic environments. Due to the proximity of the Orion Nebula and the unprecedented angular resolution of JWST, these data reveal that the molecular cloud borders are hyper structured at small angular scales of 0.1-1" (0.0002-0.002 pc or 40-400 au at 414 pc). A diverse set of features are observed such as ridges, waves, globules and photoevaporated protoplanetary disks. At the PDR atomic to molecular transition, several bright features are detected that are associated with the highly irradiated surroundings of the dense molecular condensations and embedded young star. Toward the Orion Bar PDR, a highly sculpted interface is detected with sharp edges and density increases near the IF and DF. This was predicted by previous modeling studies, but the fronts were unresolved in most tracers. A complex, structured, and folded DF surface was traced by the H2 lines. This dataset was used to revisit the commonly adopted 2D PDR structure of the Orion Bar. JWST provides us with a complete view of the PDR, all the way from the PDR edge to the substructured dense region, and this allowed us to determine, in detail, where the emission of the atomic and molecular lines, aromatic bands, and dust originate.

(Abridged) Mid-infrared observations of photodissociation regions (PDRs) are dominated by strong emission features called aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The most prominent AIBs are found at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 $\mu$m. The most sensitive, highest-resolution infrared spectral imaging data ever taken of the prototypical PDR, the Orion Bar, have been captured by JWST. We provide an inventory of the AIBs found in the Orion Bar, along with mid-IR template spectra from five distinct regions in the Bar: the molecular PDR, the atomic PDR, and the HII region. We use JWST NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS observations of the Orion Bar from the JWST Early Release Science Program, PDRs4All (ID: 1288). We extract five template spectra to represent the morphology and environment of the Orion Bar PDR. The superb sensitivity and the spectral and spatial resolution of these JWST observations reveal many details of the AIB emission and enable an improved characterization of their detailed profile shapes and sub-components. While the spectra are dominated by the well-known AIBs at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.7 $\mu$m, a wealth of weaker features and sub-components are present. We report trends in the widths and relative strengths of AIBs across the five template spectra. These trends yield valuable insight into the photochemical evolution of PAHs, such as the evolution responsible for the shift of 11.2 $\mu$m AIB emission from class B$_{11.2}$ in the molecular PDR to class A$_{11.2}$ in the PDR surface layers. This photochemical evolution is driven by the increased importance of FUV processing in the PDR surface layers, resulting in a "weeding out" of the weakest links of the PAH family in these layers. Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template datasets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations., Comment: Submitted to PASP

We present a study for a sample of galaxies with active nuclei to characterize the main type of PAH molecules present in these objects and the local physical conditions of their irradiating sources, as well as the characteristics of the residing ionized gas, by combining optical and infrared data. Photoionization models were built with the {\sc CLOUDY} code to reproduce optical emission line ratios in combination with PAH intensity ratios. We find that the species containing 10 $-$ 82 carbon atoms are the most abundant in the sample. We suggest that family of species with only two or three fused rings of and a nitrogen hanging, such as small aromatic amides are important targets worthy of consideration in future experimental/theoretical as well as observational studies. We find that the AGN photoionization models reproduce most of the observational data in the log (6.2/11.3) versus log ([\ion{N}{ii}]$\lambda$6584/H$\alpha$) diagram with the optical to X-ray spectral index of $\alpha_{\rm ox}=-1.4$. The flux of small PAH, as well as the flux of ionized PAHs and PANH, decrease as the logarithm of the ionization parameter (log $U$) increases. The 6.2/11.3 PAH intensity ratio presents anti correlation between the oxygen abundance and log $U$, in the sense that the 6.2/11.3 ratio decreases as the oxygen abundance and log $U$ increases. Finally, we found that the ionization degree of PAH species increases with the decreasing of the 11.3/7.7 ratio and the log U, in agreement with the models proposed by Draine \& Li., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of great astrochemical and astrobiological interest due to their potential to form prebiotic molecules. We analyse the 7.7 and 8.6 ${\mu}$m PAH bands in 126 predominantly starburst-dominated galaxies extracted from the Spitzer/IRS ATLAS project. Based on the peak positions of these bands, we classify them into the different A, B, and C Peeters' classes, which allows us to address the potential characteristics of the PAH emitting population. We compare this analysis with previous work focused on the 6.2 ${\mu}$m PAH band for the same sample. For the first time in the literature, this statistical analysis is performed on a sample of galaxies. In our sample, the 7.7 ${\mu}$m complex is equally distributed in A and B object's class while the 8.6 ${\mu}$m band presents more B class sources. Moreover, 39 per cent of the galaxies were distributed into A class objects for both 6.2 and 7.7 ${\mu}$m bands and only 18 per cent received the same A classification for the three bands. The "A A A" galaxies presented higher temperatures and less dust in their interstellar medium. Considering the redshift range covered by our sample, the distribution of the three bands into the different Peeters' classes reveals a potential cosmological evolution in the molecular nature of the PAHs that dominate the interstellar medium in these galaxies, where B class objects seem to be more frequent at higher redshifts and, therefore, further studies have to be addressed., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We present Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU), Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the OH Megamaser (OHM) galaxy IRAS 11506-3851. The HST images reveal an isolated spiral galaxy and the combination with the GMOS-IFU flux distributions and VLA data allow us to identify a partial ring of star-forming regions surrounding the nucleus with a radius of ~ 500 pc. While this ring shows starburst excitation and low velocity dispersion, the region internal to the ring shows higher excitation and velocity dispersion values, with values increasing towards its borders at ~ 240 pc from the nucleus, resembling a projected bubble. The enhanced excitation and velocity dispersion of this bubble surrounds a 8.5 GHz radio emission structure, supporting its origin in a faint AGN that is mostly shocking the surrounding gas via a plasma ejection seen in radio at the present stage. This is the fourth of the 5 OHM galaxies we have studied so far (from our sample of 15 OHM) for which GMOS-IFU data indicate the presence of a previously unknown faint AGN at the nucleus, consistent with the hypothesis that OHM galaxies harbor recently triggered AGN.

We present a multiwavelength study of the OH megamaser galaxy (OHMG) IRAS17526+3253, based on new Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit (GMOS/IFU) observations, Hubble Space Telescope F814W and H$\alpha$+[N{\sc ii}] images, and archival 2MASS and 1.49GHz VLA data. The HST images clearly reveal a mid-to-advanced stage major merger whose northwestern and southeastern nuclei have a projected separation of $\sim$8.5kpc. Our HST/H$\alpha$+[N{\sc ii}] image shows regions of ongoing star-formation across the envelope on $\sim$10kpc scales, which are aligned with radio features, supporting the interpretation that the radio emission originates from star-forming regions. The measured H$\alpha$ luminosities imply that the unobscured star-formation rate is $\sim$10-30\,M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. The GMOS/IFU data reveal two structures in northwestern separated by 850\,pc and by a discontinuity in the velocity field of $\sim$~200~km~s$^{-1}$. We associate the blue-shifted and red-shifted components with, respectively, the distorted disk of northwestern and tidal debris, possibly a tail originating in southeastern. Star-formation is the main ionization source in both components, which have SFRs of $\sim$2.6-7.9\,M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ and $\sim$1.5-4.5\,M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, respectively. Fainter line emission bordering these main components is consistent with shock ionization at a velocity $\sim$200~km~s$^{-1}$ and may be the result of an interaction between the tidal tail and the northwestern galaxy's disk. IRAS17526+3253 is one of only a few systems known to host both luminous OH and H$_{2}$O masers. The velocities of the OH and H$_{2}$O maser lines suggest that they are associated with the northwestern and southeastern galaxies, respectively., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a spatially resolved stellar population study of the inner $\sim$200\,pc radius of NGC4303 based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with SINFONI/VLT at a spatial resolution of 40-80pc and using the STARLIGHT code. We found the distribution of the stellar populations presents a spatial variation, suggesting an age stratification. Three main structures stand out. Two nuclear blobs, one composed by young stars (t $\leq$ 50Myr) and one with intermediate-age stars (50Myr $<$ t $\leq$ 2Gyr) both shifted from the centre. The third one is an internal intermediate-age spiral arm-like structure, surrounding the blob of young stars. Our results indicate star formation has occurred through multiple bursts in this source. Furthermore, the youngest stellar populations (t $\lesssim$ 2Gyr) are distributed along a circumnuclear star-forming ring with r$\sim$250pc. The ring displays star formation rates (SFRs) in the range of 0.002-0.14M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, favoring the `pearls-on-a-string' scenario. The old underlying bulge stellar population component (t $>$ 2Gyr) is distributed outside the two blob structures. For the nuclear region (inner $\sim$60pc radius) we derived a SFR of 0.43\,M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ and found no signatures of non-thermal featureless continuum and hot dust emission, supporting the scenario in which a LLAGN/LINER-like source is hidden in the centre of NGC4303. Thus, our results reveal a rather complex star formation history in NGC4303, with different stellar population components coexisting with a low efficiency accreting black hole in its centre.

The infrared signatures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are observed in a variety of astrophysical objects, including the circumnuclear medium of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These are sources of highly energetic photons (0.2 to 10 keV), exposing the PAHs to a harsh environment. In this work, we examined experimentally the photoionization and photostability of naphthalene (C$_{10}$H$_{8}$), anthracene (C$_{14}$H$_{10}$), 2-methyl-anthracene (C$_{14}$H$_{9}$CH$_{3}$) and pyrene (C$_{16}$H$_{10}$) upon interaction with photons of 275, 310 and 2500 eV. The measurements were performed at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory using time-of-flight mass-spectrometry (TOF-MS). We determined the absolute photoionization and photodissociation cross sections as a function of the incident photon energy; the production rates of singly, doubly and triply charged ions; and the molecular half-lives in regions surrounding AGNs. Even considering moderate X-ray optical depth values ($\tau = 4.45$) due to attenuation by the dusty torus, the half-lives are not long enough to account for PAH detection. Our results suggest that a more sophisticated interplay between PAHs and dust grains should be present in order to circumvent molecular destruction. We could not see any significant difference in the half-life values by increasing the size of the PAH carbon backbone, N$_C$, from 10 to 16. However, we show that the multiple photoionization rates are significantly greater than the single ones, irrespective of the AGN source. We suggest that an enrichment of multiply charged ions caused by X-rays can occur in AGNs., Comment: 20 pages (appendix: 3 pages), 10 figures, 4 tables. We have obtained observations of the OH Megamaser galaxy IRAS03056+0234 using Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU), Very Large Array (VLA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The HST data reveals spiral arms containing knots of emission associated to star forming regions. The GMOS-IFU data cover the spectral range of 4500 to 7500 \AA\ at a velocity resolution of 90 km s$^{-1}$ and spatial resolution of 506 pc. The emission-line flux distributions reveal a ring of star forming regions with radius of 786 pc centred at the nucleus of the galaxy, with an ionized gas mass of 1.2$\times$ 10$^{8}$M$_{\odot}$, an ionizing photon luminosity of log Q[H$^{+}$]=53.8 and a star formation rate of 4.9 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The emission-line ratios and radio emission suggest that the gas at the nuclear region is excited by both starburst activity and an active galactic nucleus. The gas velocity fields are partially reproduced by rotation in the galactic plane, but show, in addition, excess redshifts to the east of the nucleus, consistent with gas inflows towards the nucleus, with velocity of $\sim$45 km s$^{-1}$ and a mass inflow rate of $\sim$7.7$\times$10$^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$., Comment: To be published in MNRAS

We present Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral field Unit (IFU), Very Large Array (VLA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the OH Megamaser (OHM) galaxy IRASF23199+0123. Our observations show that this system is an interacting pair, with two OHM sources associated to the eastern (IRAS23199E) member. The two members of the pair present somewhat extended radio emission at 3 and 20~cm, with flux peaks at each nucleus. The GMOS-IFU observations cover the inner $\sim$6kpc of IRAS23199E at a spatial resolution of 2.3~kpc. The GMOS-IFU flux distributions in H$\alpha$ and [NII]$\lambda$6583 are similar to that of an HST [NII]+H$\alpha$ narrow-band image, being more extended along the northeast-southwest direction, as also observed in the continuum HST F814W image. The GMOS-IFU H$\alpha$ flux map of IRAS23199E shows three extranuclear knots attributed to star-forming complexes. We have discovered a Seyfert 1 nucleus in this galaxy, as its nuclear spectrum shows an unresolved broad (FWHM$\approx$2170 kms$^{-1}$) double-peaked H$\alpha$ component, from which we derive a black hole mass of M$_{BH}$= 3.8$^{+0.3}_{-0.2}\times 10^{6}$M$_{\odot}$. The gas kinematics shows low velocity dispersions ($\sigma$) and low [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratios for the star-forming complexes and higher $\sigma$ and [NII]/H$\alpha$ surrounding the radio emission region, supporting interaction between the radio-plasma and ambient gas. The two OH masers detected in IRASF23199E are observed in the vicinity of these enhanced $\sigma$ regions, supporting their association with the active nucleus and its interaction with the surrounding gas. The gas velocity field can be partially reproduced by rotation in a disk, with residuals along the north-south direction being tentatively attributed to emission from the front walls of a bipolar outflow.

We studied the physical parameters of a sample comprising of all Spitzer/IRS public spectra of Seyfert galaxies in the mid-infrared (5.2-38$\mu$m range) under the active galactic nuclei (AGN) unified model. We compare the observed spectra with $\sim10^6$ CLUMPY model spectral energy distributions, which consider a torus composed of dusty clouds. We find a slight difference in the distribution of line-of-sight inclination angle, $i$, requiring larger angles for Seyfert 2 (Sy2) and a broader distribution for Seyfert 1 (Sy1). We found small differences in the torus angular width, $\sigma$, indicating that Sy1 may host a slightly narrower torus than Sy2. The torus thickness, together with the bolometric luminosities derived, suggest a very compact torus up to $\sim$6 pc from the central AGN. The number of clouds along the equatorial plane, $N$, as well the index of the radial profile, $q$, are nearly the same for both types. These results imply that the torus cloud distribution is nearly the same for type 1 and type 2 objects. The torus mass is almost the same for both types of activity, with values in the range of $M_{tor}\sim$10$^{4}-$10$^{7}\rm M_{\odot}$. The main difference appears to be related to the clouds' intrinsic properties: type 2 sources present higher optical depths $\tau_V$. The results presented here reinforce the suggestion that the classification of a galaxy may depend also on the intrinsic properties of the torus clouds rather than simply on their inclination. We present new maps of emission-line flux distributions and kinematics in both ionized (traced by HI and [FeII] lines) and molecular (H2) gas of the inner 0.7x0.7kpc2 of the galaxy NGC4303, with a spatial resolution 40-80pc and velocity resolution 90-150 km/s obtained from near-IR integral field specroscopy using the VLT instrument SINFONI. The most promiment feature is a 200-250pc ring of circum-nuclear star-forming regions. The emission from ionized and molecular gas shows distinct flux distributions: while the strongest HI and [FeII] emission comes from regions in the west side of the ring (ages~4Myr), the H2 emission is strongest at the nucleus and in the east side of the ring (ages>10Myr). We find that regions of enhanced hot H2 emission are anti-correlated with those of enhanced [FeII] and HI emission, which can be attributed to post starburst regions that do not have ionizing photons anymore but still are hot enough (~2000K) to excite the H2 molecule. The line ratios are consistent with the presence of an AGN at the nucleus. The youngest regions have stellar masses in the range 0.3-1.5E5 MSun and ionized and hot molecular gas masses of ~0.25-1.2E4 Msun and 2.5-5 Msun, respectively. The stellar and gas velocity fields show a rotation pattern, with the gas presenting larger velocity amplitudes than the stars, with a deviation observed for the H2 along the nuclear bar, where increased velocity dispersion is also observed, possibly associated with non circular motions along the bar. The stars in the ring show smaller velocity dispersion than the surroundings, that can be attributed to a cooler dynamics due to their recent formation from cool gas., Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the 2D excitation structure of the ISM in a sample of LIRGs and Seyferts using near-IR IFS. This study extends to the near-IR the well-known optical and mid-IR emission line diagnostics used to classify activity in galaxies. Based on the spatially resolved spectroscopy of prototypes, we identify in the [FeII]1.64/Br$\gamma$ - H_2 1-0S(1)/Br$\gamma$ plane regions dominated by the different heating sources, i.e. AGNs, young MS massive stars, and evolved stars i.e. supernovae. The ISM in LIRGs occupy a wide region in the near-IR diagnostic plane from -0.6 to +1.5 and from -1.2 to +0.8 (in log units) for the [FeII]/Br$\gamma$ and H_2/Br$\gamma$ line ratios, respectively. The corresponding median(mode) ratios are +0.18(0.16) and +0.02(-0.04). Seyferts show on average larger values by factors ~2.5 and ~1.4 for the [FeII]/Br$\gamma$ and H_2/Br$\gamma$ ratios, respectively. New areas and relations in the near-IR diagnostic plane are defined for the compact, high surface brightness regions dominated by AGN, young ionizing stars, and SNe explosions, respectively. In addition, the diffuse regions affected by the AGN radiation field cover an area similar to that of Seyferts, but with high values in [FeII]/Br$\gamma$ that are not as extreme. The extended, non-AGN diffuse regions cover a wide area in the diagnostic diagram that overlaps that of individual excitation mechanisms (i.e. AGN, young stars, and SNe), but with its mode value to that of the young SF clumps. This indicates that the excitation conditions of the diffuse ISM are likely due to a mixture of the different ionization sources. The integrated line ratios in LIRGs show higher excitation conditions i.e. towards AGNs, than those measured by the spatially resolved spectroscopy. We present a multiwavelength study of the OH Megamaser galaxy (OHMG) IRAS16399-0937, based on new HST/ACS F814W and H$\alpha$+[NII] images and archive data from HST, 2MASS, Spitzer, Herschel and the VLA. This system has a double nucleus, whose northern (IRAS16399N) and southern (IRAS16399S) components have a projected separation of $\sim$ 6'' (3.4 kpc) and have previously been identified based on optical spectra as a Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Region (LINER) and starburst nucleus, respectively. The nuclei are embedded in a tidally distorted common envelope, in which star formation is mostly heavily obscured. The infrared spectrum is dominated by strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), but deep silicate and molecular absorption features are also present, and are strongest in the IRAS16399N nucleus. The 0.435 - 500$\mu$m SED was fitted with a model including stellar, ISM and AGN torus components using our new MCMC code, clumpyDREAM. The results indicate that the IRAS16399N contains an AGN (L$_{bol} \sim 10^{44}$ ergs/s) deeply embedded in a quasi-spherical distribution of optically-thick clumps with a covering fraction $\approx1$. We suggest that these clumps are the source of the OHM emission in IRAS16399-0937. The high torus covering fraction precludes AGN-photoionization as the origin of the LINER spectrum, however, the spectrum is consistent with shocks (v $\sim100-200$ km s$^{-1}$). We infer that the $\sim10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ black-hole in IRAS16399N is accreting at a small fraction ($\sim1$%) of its Eddington rate. The low accretion-rate and modest nuclear SFRs suggest that while the gas-rich major merger forming the IRAS16399-0937 system has triggered widespread star formation, the massive gas inflows expected from merger simulations have not yet fully developed., Comment: Paper was accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 72 pages, 18 figures

Mid-infrared (MIR) spectra observed with Gemini/Michelle were used to study the nuclear region of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 (Sy 2) galaxy Mrk 3 at a spatial resolution of $\sim$200 pc. No polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission bands were detected in the N-band spectrum of Mrk 3. However, intense [Ar III] 8.99 $\mu$m, [S IV] 10.5 $\mu$m and [Ne II] 12.8 $\mu$m ionic emission-lines, as well as silicate absorption feature at 9.7$\mu$m have been found in the nuclear extraction ($\sim$200 pc). We also present subarcsecond-resolution Michelle N-band image of Mrk 3 which resolves its circumnuclear region. This diffuse MIR emission shows up as a wings towards East-West direction closely aligned with the S-shaped of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) observed at optical [O III]$\lambda$5007\AA image with Hubble/FOC. The nuclear continuum spectrum can be well represented by a theoretical torus spectral energy distribution (SED), suggesting that the nucleus of Mrk 3 may host a dusty toroidal structure predicted by the unified model of active galactic nucleus (AGN). In addition, the hydrogen column density (N$_H\,=\,4.8^{+3.3}_{-3.1}\times\,10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) estimated with a torus model for Mrk 3 is consistent with the value derived from X-ray spectroscopy. The torus model geometry of Mrk 3 is similar to that of NGC 3281, both Compton-thick galaxies, confirmed through fitting the 9.7$\mu$m silicate band profile. This results might provide further evidence that the silicate-rich dust can be associated with the AGN torus and may also be responsible for the absorption observed at X-ray wavelengths in those galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

New Gemini mid-infrared spectroscopic observations together with Spitzer Space telescope archival data, are used to study the properties of the dusty torus and circumnuclear star formation in the active galaxies NGC 7213 and NGC 1386. Our main conclusions can be summarised as follows. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission is absent in the T-ReCS nuclear spectra but is ubiquitous in the data from Spitzer at distances above 100 pc. Star formation rates surface densities are estimated from the 12.8 $\mu m$ [Ne{\sc ii}] line strengths leading to values close to 0.1M$_\odot\,\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$. Analogous estimates based on photometric fluxes of IRAC's 8 $\mu m$ images are higher by a factor of almost 15, which could be linked to excitation of PAH molecules by older stellar populations. T-ReCS high spatial resolution data reveal silicate absorption at $\lambda$ 9.7 $\mu m$ in the central tens of parsecs of the Seyfert 2 NGC 1386, and silicate emission in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7213. In the case of NGC 1386 this feature is confined to the inner 20 pc, implying that the silicate might be linked to the putative dusty torus. Finally, by fitting CLUMPY models to the T-ReCS nuclear spectra we estimate the torus physical properties for both galaxies, finding line of sight inclinations consistent with the AGN unified model., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We employed observational spectroscopic data of star-forming regions compiled from the literature and photoionization models to analyse the neon ionic abundances obtained using both optical and mid-infrared emission-lines. Comparing Ne++/H+ ionic abundances from distinct methods, we found that, in average, the abundances obtained via IR emission-lines are higher than those obtained via optical lines by a factor of 4. Photoionization models with abundance variations along the radius of the hypothetical nebula provide a possible explanation for a large part of the difference between ionic abundances via optical and infrared emission-lines. Ionization Correction Factor (ICF) for the neon is obtained from direct determinations of ionic fractions using infrared emission-lines. A constant Ne/O ratio (logNe/O \approx -0.70) for a large range of metallicity, independently of the ICF used to compute the neon total abundance is derived., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present mid infrared (MIR) spectra of the Seyfert 2 (Sy 2) galaxy NGC 1808, obtained with the Gemini's Thermal-Region Camera Spectrograph (T-ReCS) at a spatial resolution of 26 pc. The high spatial resolution allowed us to detect bright polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emissions at 8.6micron and 11.3micron in the galaxy centre (26 pc) up to a radius of 70 pc from the nucleus. The spectra also present [Ne ii]12.8micron ionic lines, and H2 S(2)12.27micron molecular gas line. We found that the PAHs profiles are similar to Peeters's A class, with the line peak shifted towards the blue. The differences in the PAH line profiles also suggests that the molecules in the region located 26 pc NE of the nucleus are more in the neutral than in the ionised state, while at 26 pc SW of the nucleus, the molecules are mainly in ionised state. After removal of the underlying galaxy contribution, the nuclear spectrum can be represented by a Nenkova's clumpy torus model, indicating that the nucleus of NGC 1808 hosts a dusty toroidal structure with an angular cloud distribution of sigma = 70degree, observer's view angle i = 90degree, and an outer radius of R0 = 0.55 pc. The derived column density along the line of sight is NH = 1.5 x 10^24 cm-2, which is sufficient to block the hard radiation from the active nucleus, and would explain the presence of PAH molecules near to the NGC 1808's active nucleus., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS 2012 December 3

We present mid infrared (Mid-IR) spectra of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC\,3281, obtained with the Thermal-Region Camera Spectrograph (T-ReCS) at the Gemini South telescope. The spectra present a very deep silicate absorption at 9.7\,$\mu$m, and [S{\sc\,iv]}\,10.5\,$\mu$m and [Ne{\sc\,ii]}\,12.7\,$\mu$m ionic lines, but no evidence of PAH emission. We find that the nuclear optical extinction is in the range 24 $\leq$ A$_{V}$ $\leq$ 83\,mag. A temperature T = 300\,K was found for the black-body dust continuum component of the unresolved 65\,pc nucleus and at 130\,pc SE, while the region at 130\,pc reveals a colder temperature (200\,K). We describe the nuclear spectrum of NGC\,3281 using a clumpy torus model that suggests that the nucleus of this galaxy hosts a dusty toroidal structure. According to this model, the ratio between the inner and outer radius of the torus in NGC\,3281 is $R_0/R_d$ = 20, with {\bf 14} clouds in the equatorial radius with optical depth of $\tau_{V}$ = 40\,mag. We would be looking in the direction of the torus equatorial radius ($i$ = {\bf 60$^{\circ}$}), which has outer radius of R$_{0}\,\sim$ 11\,pc. The column density is N$_{H}\approx$\,{\bf 1.2}\,$\times\,10^{24}\,cm^{-2}$ and iron K$\alpha$ equivalent width ($\approx$ 0.5 - 1.2\,keV) are used to check the torus geometry. Our findings indicate that the X-ray absorbing column density, which classifies NGC\,3281 as a Compton-thick source, may also be responsible for the absorption at 9.7\,$\mu$m providing strong evidence that the silicate dust responsible for this absorption can be located in the AGN torus., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We study the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) bands, ionic emission lines, and Mid-infrared continuum properties, in a sample of 171 emission line galaxies taken from literature plus 15 new active galactic nuclei (AGN) Spitzer spectra. The continuum shape steeply rises for longer wavelengths and can be fitted with a warm blackbody distribution of T=150-300K. The brightest PAH spectral bands (6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, and 12.7$\mu$m) and the forbidden emission lines of [Si II] 34.8$\mu$m, [Ar II] 6.9, [S III] 18.7 and 33.4 were detected in all the Starbursts and in ~80% of the Seyfert~2. Taking under consideration only the PAH bands at 7.7$\mu$m, 11.3$\mu$m, and 12.7$\mu$m we find they are present in ~80% of the Seyfert 1, while only half of this type of activity show the 6.2$\mu$m and 8.6 PAH bands. The observed intensities ratios for neutral and ionized PAHs (6.2/7.7 x 11.3/7.7) were compared to theoretical intensity ratios, showing that AGNs have higher ionization fraction and larger PAH (> 180 carbon atoms) than SB galaxies. The ratio between the ionized (7.7) and the neutral PAH bands (8.6 and 11.3) are distributed over different ranges for AGNs and SB galaxies, suggesting that these ratios could depend on the ionization fraction, as well as on the hardness of the radiation field. The ratio between the 7.7 and 11.3 bands is nearly constant with the increase of [Ne III]15.5/[Ne II], indicating that the fraction of ionized to neutral PAH bands does not depend on the hardness of the radiation field. The equivalent width of both PAH features show the same dependence with [Ne III]/[Ne II], suggesting that the PAH, emitting either ionized (7.7) or neutral (11.3) bands, may be destroyed with the increase of the hardness of the radiation field., Comment: Accepted by ApJ
