The training of professionals for a global world remains a challenge for Higher Education. From an intercultural educational approach, this study describes and analyses two educational proposals in Italy and Spain, which have helped to develop students' intercultural competences, thanks to a teaching framework based on participatory strategies. A multiple case study with a qualitative approach is elaborated to analyse the data on the situation in order to describe and recognise the relevance of examining participation, collaborative culture and social transformation in two Master's Degrees. Findings show that the synergy between participatory strategies and intercultural competences enhances dialogue and renegotiation of meanings, reconceptualisation of diversity, critical thinking and agency for change. The conclusions point to the need to generate collaborative networks to further mobilise the knowledge generated in training for intercultural professionals.

The premise of the present paper is that an intercultural approach to multilingualism in schools generates inclusion and a construction of cultural and linguistic identity that respects the diversity of society and classrooms. Students, teachers, and families participated in an action research project conducted in four schools with the presence of varied home languages. One of the objectives of the project is to foster intercultural education by introducing home languages in the school through identity texts. The process was documented through questionnaires, interviews with families and educators, and classroom observations. Results show that the texts and the curricular activities designed around them have provided spaces for the recognition and valuation of diversity. The self-esteem of alloglot students has improved and the collaborative relationship between school and families has increased. Conclusions point at the potential of multilingualism as a way to enrich the curriculum and to promote equality from diversity in the school context.

Background: For education to be underpinned deeply by the principles of inclusion and interculturality, there is a need for school to be reconceptualised as an institution which is strongly linked to its territory and capable of being an agent of social change. As part of a wider project exploring processes of democratic participation for social transformation, this article reports on a research study that supported schools to review and reformulate their educational practices through a school-based Participatory Action Research (PAR) project. Purpose: The study sought to support participating schools to examine, review and transform practices by using participatory social diagnosis (PSD) strategies. In particular, it aimed to explore the ways in which PSD practices enabled the review of practices linked to territory, encouraging a process of transformative participation towards inclusion. Method: Through participatory projects across four infant (3- to 6-year-old pupils) and primary (6- to 12-year-old pupils) schools in different locations in Spain, case studies were developed to examine participation and community building in the context of each case. Data, including recordings of focus group sessions, were transcribed and analysed qualitatively, using content analysis techniques. Findings: Across the four case studies, analysis suggested that, in a variety of ways, spaces and times were created for shared reflection, and participatory techniques generated creative forms available to the entire community to contribute to the analysis and transformation of practices. The findings indicated that PAR techniques had enabled a means of participation that led to a process of circulation and collective production of knowledge, allowing a rethinking of inclusion and territory. Conclusions: Our small scale, in-depth study highlights the implications of opening up participatory spaces with regard to the concept of community, social change and territory. This research may provide insights for future researchers and school communities with similar goals of changing educational practices to address participation from an inclusive and intercultural approach.

The present article describes a study carried out in a rural school in the province of Valencia (Spain) that is currently immersed in a process of transformation towards becoming an inclusive intercultural school. The objective of this study is to learn about the process of constructing the school's educational community and the factors involved in this process. The study used intrinsic case study methodology in which, through interviews, focus groups, participatory social diagnostic techniques and participant observation, we examine how this educational community is being constructed. The results show the dynamism and complexity of this process. The search for identity symbols, the need to continually inspire motivation among the members of the community and the emergence of a dichotomous discourse determines its evolution. The democratic participation of the community is demonstrated as a core element in the process of constructing this inclusive intercultural educational community.

Participatory Action Research (PAR) in the educational context is a coherent methodology to accompany processes of school democratisation focusing on the key elements of collaborative culture, a sense of belonging and social transformation from an inclusive and intercultural approach. The present case study of a rural school in the Valencian Community (Spain) takes an ethnographic approach to analyse how PAR strategies and processes facilitate the democratisation process and the educational community's perceptions of the transformations in the school culture. Results show an improvement in participation strategies and a more distributed leadership, but they also reveal some resistance to delegating responsibilities and difficulties in empowering children's voices. The conclusions highlight the need to institutionalise cultural change by understanding participation as a fundamental strategy with which to build a more inclusive and intercultural school and society.

Professional development that aims to build school change capacity requires spaces for collaborative action and reflection. These spaces should promote learning and foster skills for distributed leadership in managing school change. The present study analyses the case of the Seminar for Critical Citizenship (SCC) established by teachers of infant, primary, secondary and higher education to experiment with and share innovative practices. A focus group was formed first to identify which factors SCC participants perceived as influencing the development of this leadership for change, and second, to verify whether the SCC offers a space where the development of distributed leadership is promoted. We find that while it enables a network for collaboration, egalitarian dialogue and empowerment, certain tensions persist between theory and practice, and in attitudes towards innovation and school culture.

This study explores Participatory Action Research (PAR) as a practice that promotes collaborative knowledge construction between researchers and participants. Within this framework, a PAR experience carried out for the transformation of a school in the province of Valencia (Spain) is explored. The aim is to analyse the shared construction of knowledge during the process and the changes produced through the perceptions of the educational community and the research group. From a qualitative methodology, a case study is elaborated through the analysis of documents produced during the research and ad hoc focus groups, and the data obtained are analysed following a mixed categorization. The results show that the shared construction of knowledge during PAR has led to the development of more horizontal roles and strategies between researchers and participants, and changes towards a new school model, for which the improvement of the participation of the agents involved has been key. Elements that invite reflection on the shared construction of knowledge through PAR are discussed, among which stand out the complexity of the researchers' task, the timing, the articulation of the students' voice and the relationship between the type of research carried out and the changes produced. From an understanding of knowledge mobilisation as a set of strategies that favour responsible and inclusive research, the aim of this paper is to identify the obstacles or barriers to carrying out such research in higher education institutions, as perceived by researchers. In this descriptive study, content analysis is used to examine semi-structured interviews carried out with eighty research groups from five European countries (Austria, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain) that participated in the research. Results reveal the main barriers researchers perceived are associated with social commitment, relational aspects, encouragement to participate (attitudinal, organisational and institutional barriers) and knowledge mobilisation practices (derived from the research process and research evaluation policies). Teacher professional development is a key factor for transforming professional and school culture. This article describes a case study undertaken in a Spanish school during the 2007-2008 academic year. Our aim is to explain how action research methodology was applied to encourage professional and school culture towards an intercultural and inclusive approach. Our results show that the training process challenged teachers' pre-existing deficit theory perspectives and empowered them as leaders for school change. The conclusions identify the key factors that enabled teachers to engage in critical reflection, and to implement strategies for collaborative work and community participation in school.

This article presents a study that attempts to inquire into the indicators related with inclusive education by taking into account teachers' responses in the ordinary and specific teaching contexts (experts in special education needs, specialists in therapeutic pedagogy and compensatory education or specific programmes organised to accommodate diversity). We used a Spanish translation of the Index for Inclusion, which has been adapted and divided into three Likert-type scales about inclusive cultures, organisation in the teaching-learning context and inclusive practices. We did a t-test to detect any significant differences in teachers' responses in terms of the ordinary or specific teaching contexts in which they work. No significant differences were seen in the items related to cultures and organisation, but we found significant differences in 12 of the 36 items of the inclusive practices scale. Finally, we discuss the role of the processes for innovation and transformation in secondary schools and provide key factors to build an intercultural inclusive school. The objectives of this study are to identify the resources and strategies of participation in the schools of three autonomous communities in Spain, and to identify the perceptions of teachers and families with regard to the culture of school participation. An exploratory survey was used, with the intervention of teams of school administrators, teachers, and families. The results show spaces, activities, and community relations, as well as a positive perception of collaborative culture and citizens' commitment to participation. The conclusions point to a need to improve shared leadership and to develop a curriculum with improved links to the surroundings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
