Between 2015 and 2020, the city centre of Brussels witnessed the creation of its first major pedestrian zone, one of the largest urban projects in recent decades. Has the Brussels city centre finally done away with the car hegemony? Can the city centre be extended to become the centre of the Brussels metropolis where everyone can find his or her own place? This book presents scientific background to the issue and brings together in words and images the research carried out over the past four years by the Brussels Centre Observatory.

- Abstract

- Abstract

Disruptive innovation is needed to support organic agriculture, i.e. to think out of ‘conventional agriculture’ and to build innovative cropping systems suited to local issues. Indeed, it involves finding new way to work with these stakeholders while creating new cropping systems. This innovation process is particularly difficult when scientific knowledge is missing. This paper describes the implementation of an approach combining tracking on-farm innovations and co-design workshops to manage creeping thistle in arable organic farms in the Northern France context. A wide range of useful results for farmers and advisors has been produced (e.g. knowledge on innovative practices and on their combinations). Some key points are highlighted for the implementation of such approach, particularly, diversifying sources and type of knowledge to help stakeholders be disruptive.

International audience; Intercropping or species mixtures, is an agriculturalpractice that consists of cultivating at least two species on the same plot of land during a significant period of their growth, and which has many advantages, such as: i) diversifying the crop rotation; ii) increasing the resilience of systemsto hazards thanks to more stable yields and less pressure from biotic and abiotic factors; and iii) reducing the use of inputs and their impact on the environment. The ReMIX project, financed for four years by the European Union within the framework of the Horizon 2020 program, has set itself the objective of proposing practical solutions adapted to farmers and to the various actors in the agricultural sector under various pedoclimatic and socio-technical conditions on a European scale. Based on the observation that farmers lack technical references and support, in particularfor the choice of species and varieties to be combined in a mixture, the ReMIX project has developed and implemented a multi-actor co-design approach in order to combine diverse and complementary knowledge to design species mixtures that meet the objectives, means, contexts andpractices of each actor. One of the main constraints to the development of species mixtures concerns the harvesting and sorting of grains when the mixture is not used as is, which is most often the case with the exception of certain mixtures for animal feed. Thus, the ReMIX projectsought to know if it was possible to harvest and sort associated crops in such a way that the marketed products would respect food standards and ultimately offer a satisfactory economic value to farmers.

- Abstract
Dwelling is very much related to time. A home shields the dweller from outsiders yet, provides an opportunity to engage with the outside world. However, the time required for household chores tends to hinder this engagement, especially for women. Interestingly, co-housing projects tend to rationalise housing and mutualise time-consuming tasks, freeing up time to and thus emancipating and empowering inhabitants. This argument was put to the test in a field study in Brussels. Through a gendered perspective, the research questions and tries to identify which levers ease domestic drudgery in co-housing projects. Spatial analyses coupled with qualitative observations and interviews were carried out in two co-housing projects. The issue of freeing up time through co-housing seems particularly relevant to various categories of people. First, it addresses gender inequalities regarding an egalitarian sharing of household chores. Second, individual (divorced, elderly, or single) households could also benefit from these time savings. Understanding co-housing within this emancipating perspective could be a lever to influence future policy making and incentives.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Agriculture face sustainability-related challenges and agroecology is put forward as a potential future model callling for novel designs of on-farm farming systems and for the renewal of methods used by agricultural R&D to support these processes (Meynard et al., 2012). Design requires that farmers and stakeholders organize to acquire knowledge and know-how on agroecological systems, such as species mixtures. Through several decades, experimentation has been the most widespread scientific method to generate knowledge to support re-design (e.g. Ronner et al., 2019; Vereijken, 1997). To foster agroecology in practice, an increasing number of articles insists on the importance to develop participatory experiments (e.g. Snapp, 2002) and to value the interests of experimental networks (ENs), i.e. articulating experiments in different agricultural situations (e.g. Navarrete et al., 2018). However, as far as we know, no work focused on the contributions of such ENs to redesign in agriculture. Given these statements, in this research, our objective is to shed light on relations between ways of managing an EN, and its contributions to the design of agroecological systems.

This article describes the context of the MasterClass workshop that launched a reflection on ecosystems, with the issue of work as a starting point. Its theoretical approach is intentionally different from the way in which economics typically tackle the issue of work. The goal is not to frame the question in economic terms, but rather to develop — based on concrete cases — a method by which work and the productive city could be placed in an ecosystemic perspective, mainly in order to describe the network of relationships between forms of work and ways of inhabiting and producing territory within a city. This investivation project is tied to three radical premises/goals: overcoming of the idea of homo economicus, upon which contemporary thought on work and territory is based; refusing the urban model built on the functional production of non-places dedicated to work, with no true social existence; and, lastly, the interaction premise, in which the meaning of objects is based on the relationships between people. According to us, this final premise promotes a new ‘ecology of the mind’ through a culture and symbols that emphasises the relationships within and between ecosystems as much as their structures.

In this text, the right to the city is used as a prism to analyse the transformations of Brussels’s city centre, notably in relation to the edestrianization of the central boulevards. Drawing on four case studies that analyse this development plan from different perspectives – the participatory process, the experience of homeless people, the representations and practices on the edges of the gay district, the interactions between public spacesand residential spaces – the aim is to cross-reference their respective contributions with the concept of the right to the city and its specific articulations in this context., info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
To meet the challenges of sustainability in agricultural system design, reducing the dependency on synthetic plant protection products has become a core issue. There are currently two major reasons for farmers' decision to reduce their use of synthetic products: public policies, and the extralegal requirements of food supply chains. To reduce or eliminate synthetic plant protection products, agroecological crop protection (ACP) relying on the development of agroecology science and practices is a promising holistic approach focused on crop health overall. ACP requires a consistent combination of various agronomic practices at different spatiotemporal and trophic levels. Vegetable crops are minor crops facing the major challenges of producing high-quality produce and of controlling sanitary pressure on yields. Thus, agroecological vegetable systems must not only be adapted to official regulations and environmental parameters but must also comply with the specifications of the targeted food value chains (FVC), which are variable: marketing standards regarding cosmetic issues are very strict in long value chains, whereas they are more flexible in local short chains. Whereas fresh vegetable production is strongly challenged by the reduction of synthetic plant protection products, there are few studies that show how to design, manage and assess agroecological crop protection strategies for such systems, considering the main specifications and criteria of the FVC as a whole. This article reports on the challenges of complying with both FVC specifications and agroecology principles in protected vegetable crop protection. This study relies on four cropping systems implemented in an experimental station for 4.5 years, each of which had a specific strategy of crop protection management and was devoted to a particular FVC. The four FVCs are "local direct sale in lowpesticide farming", "local direct sale in organic farming", "super- and hypermarket value chain in low-pesticide f

Today, in an increasing number of initiatives in the R&D agricultural sector, we want to learn from farmer’s innovative practices to foster change in agriculture toward agroecology. These initiatives, still poorly known, emerge in a context where agronomists explore new ways to produce knowledge to face current issues and answer new questions such as : while designing agroecological farming systems, how to deal with natural regulations, partly unknown and poorly predictable? What kind of models of agroecosystems allow to imagine chemical-free cropping systems? Or, what knowledge should we produce to design technical options adapted to every farmer’s expectations? … In this thesis, we assume that studying farmer’s innovative practices would be one way, taken by certain actors, to explore innovative farming systems today. More precisely, we explore how and in which conditions the study of farmer’s innovative practices could foster the design of agricultural systems.First, by exploring the history of agronomy, we show that since the foundation of the discipline, in the 18th century, agronomists draw inspiration from farmer’s practices; then, with the evolution of the discipline, the study of farmer’s practices marginalised. Today, new ways to study farmer’s practices emerge, in relation with contemporaneous challenges and we then propose to focus on ways to study ‘farmer’s innovative practices’. Through the analysis of a panorama of 14 initiatives from the agricultural R&D sector we show that it exists various ways to study farmer’s innovative practices, and we propose to organize this diversity. First, we shed light on what people get from the study of innovative practices depending on their own situation (to federate a designer’s community, to renew agronomic models, to get knowledge on unknown technical systems…). We then shed light on common traits in agronomist’s reasoning underlying the study of farmer’s innovative practices (ex. They all spot innovative practices formulating desirable unknown), and we show variants in ways to analyse them (ex. various systemic analysis). We finally show that studying innovative practices allows to enrich collective design dynamics: by fostering the emergence of new technical systems on farm, and by contributing to the emergence of original prescriptions aiming to support the design on farm of innovative systems (contextualised testimonies, generic action logics…)These initiatives illustrate the emergence of original forms of contributions, in agronomy, in a distributed design organisation, spread in territories. This thesis contribute to the understanding of what’s studying farmer’s innovative practices in relation to a design activity, and it gets to the formulation of reflexive keys to study farmer’s practices while designing in agronomy.; Aujourd’hui, dans un nombre croissant d’initiatives de la R&D agricole, on cherche à apprendre de pratiques ‘innovantes’ d’agriculteurs, pour soutenir l’évolution des systèmes agricoles, souvent dans le projet de l’agroécologie.

Dwelling is usually thought in terms of space but it is also very much related to time. While home spares the dweller from others, it also provides an opportunity to engage with the outside world. However, the time needed for household chores tends to hinder these relations. In the past, modernist architects have pondered the issue of rationalizing housing to save time for the housekeeper. Interestingly, collaborative housing regenerates this tendency by mutualizing time-consuming tasks and hence liberate time to emancipate and empower inhabitants. This argument was put to the test of an on-field study in Brussels. The research questions and tries to identify which levers ease domestic drudgery. Spatial analyses coupled with qualitative observations were carried out in two collaborative housing projects. The issue of freeing time through collaborative housing seems particularly relevant to various categories of people. First, it addresses gender inequalities regarding egalitarian share of household chores. Second, individual households (divorced people, single parenting, elderly people, etc.) could also benefit from these time savings. Understanding collaborative housing within this emancipating perspective could be a lever to influence future policy makings and incentives.

- Abstract
This book examines the social and spatial dimensions of dwelling from the perspective of sustainability. This publication avoids the traditional energy and technological dimensions of sustainability to position the notion of sustainable dwelling at the crossroads of spatial polyvalence and residents’ empowerment. In the field of housing, this publication identifies the recurrent properties of ‘sustainable space’ and the variety of the socio-cultural practices that can embody them. Its purpose is to comprehend how the concept of sustainability is reflected in housing spaces as well as to analyse how inhabitants put those spaces to the test. This publication collects the contributions of several authors gathered for a two-day workshop on collective housing from a spatial or social perspective in May 2017. This publication is also a follow-up to various case studies conducted in Nantes and Zurich by a team of teacher-researchers (architects and socio-anthropologists) from UCLouvain/UCLille. Their research activities were funded by the Christian Leleux Grant, which promotes research on sustainability in the fields of architecture and urban design.

- Abstract
In a context of increasing individualization of our societies, dwelling has developed to become largely a personal feat. Hence, housing can no longer be considered exclusively from a traditional household perspective. Given this context, a combined analysis – both spatial and social - of several housing projects was carried out by researchers in architecture and the humanities. Two projects - La Sécherie in Nantes and Kalkbreite in Zurich - were selected for their use of a particular conception principle: ‘reduction/extension’. This principle implies organizing a dwelling between two poles: a reduced domestic nucleus and a series of additional spaces. Based on this principle, a multiplicity of dwelling configurations can be imagined. All are grounded on the idea that living could take place beyond the traditional limits of housing. Combined with a spatial analysis, a post-occupancy exploration was carried out in both projects, shedding light on the constraints but also the potential of the ‘reduction/extension’ principle. The benefits of this ‘reduction/extension’ principle are twofold. First, dwelling can evolve given the constellation of possible housing configurations. Second, inhabitants are able to make their own dwelling choices. This combination of domestic polyvalence and dwellers’ empowerment is a key for sustainable housing designs.

The cropping systems of the Argentine Pampas are characterized by the predominance of the soybean crop in the rotation, including in some cases, soybean monoculture. This rose concerns about the sustainability of the production practices. These considerations, however, may neglect the actual diversity of the cropping systems practiced in the Pampas. This article identifies and analyzes alternative cropping systems developed by farmers of the Balcarce County. The research has four main parts: (i) characterization of a predominant system based on the soybean crop, (ii) identification of farmers that undertake alternative cropping systems, (iii) description and analysis of the different systems, and (iv) agro-environmental and economic assessment of these systems. Alternative cropping systems with practices contrasting with those typical of the most common system were identified. The alternative systems exhibit longer and more diverse crop rotations, the combination, in the rotation, of direct seeding and minimum tillage, limited use of pesticides, etc. The assessment revealed that alternative cropping systems could have better agro-environmental results than the most common system based on the soybean crop. These findings allowed the identification of future agronomic research lines. EEA Balcarce Fil: Salembier, Chloe. Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique. Ce numéro comprend les articles issus du colloque de restitution Ecophyto Recherche « Des outils et des dispositifs pour éclairer les décisions, explorer les possibles et accompagner la transition vers des systèmes économes et multi-performants », qui s’est tenu à Saint-Malo, du 22 au 24 mars 2017; National audience; Global assessment indicators used to measure the efficiency of the national action plan Ecophyto might hide processes which occur at intermediary level (supply chains, locality, farm). To highlight such processes, we analyse how public policy instruments are used by various AKIS players in relation to the logic supporting their respective collective action. Our results described: (i) the diversity of existing frames related to such logics and their prescriptive dimension regarding intermediary activities; (ii) the way various intermediary players built their relation to technical knowledge and act to legitimise their position and their technical discourse in order to initiate, support and develop the negotiated changes related to less pesticide use; (iii) the objects which are produced and mobilised to support intermediation, their structuring role, and the need to pay attention to the knowledge embedded in these objects as well as to their transformation during the collective action process; Les indicateurs globaux d’évaluation pour mesurer l’efficacité du plan Ecophyto peuvent masquer des dynamiques aux niveaux intermédiaires (territoire, filières, exploitation).
