Historically, several grades of hot pressed hexagonal boron nitride have been used for space electric propulsion applications. This study investigates the material properties of a selection of commercially available boron nitride grades including HP, M26, M, BNXX, and Shapal Hi-M. This work complements data which was presented at JANNAF 2018. The grades selected for this study are of interest because their available billet size is sufficient for space electric propulsion. This research investigates a range of material properties, tailored and focused on enhancing performance, reliability, and economics of electric propulsion thrusters. This work builds upon previous efforts by studying lot-to-lot variability of some of the properties of interest. Coefficient of friction, moisture absorption, moisture sensitivity, hot press directionality, flexural strength, compression strength, elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, thermal emissivity, thermal expansion, density, X-ray diffraction phase, microstructure, and chemical composition were all investigated across two lots of materials to help guide the selection of advanced ceramics. Variability between lots is the critical concern of the study.

Boron nitride is used in applications such as crucibles for melting and casting glasses and metals, insulators for furnaces, molds for hot pressing, and neutron absorbers. Historically, various grades of hot pressed hexagonal boron nitride (BN) have been used. This study investigates the fracture toughness and slow crack growth parameters of several commercially available BN grades. Prior work revealed that some grades of BN absorb water and change strength, thus presenting a philosophical conundrum on crack growth test methods. The grades selected for this study are of interest because their available billet size is sufficient for large components, or because they have heritage in specific applications. Ultimately, the data will be used to perform material selection, system design and reliability analyses of components of interest. Boron nitrides exhibit limited slow crack growth in humidity, with an orientation dependence due to crystallographic texture: orientations with van der Waal bonds are insensitive to water whereas those with covalent bonds are sensitive. Fracture toughness is low, around that of glass, and is also a function of orientation (bond type), with fracture occurring more readily along van der Waal bonds between hexagonal BN platelets than at covalent bonds across platelets. Silica additions toughen BN, but increase slow crack growth susceptibility.

The through-thickness strength of triaxial braided composites was measured using thin specimens bonded to metallic tabs. Despite providing reasonable engineering estimates of the bulk properties, some test specimen limitations were noted: For strong epoxies, significant shear and tensile stresses occur and induce failure between the first layer and bond-line; the strains over much of the exterior are ~10% lower than interior strains, which are representative of the nominal state; and failure often occurred near or along the adhesive bond line. These interference were partially overcome by adding a large radius to the gage section. Based on the finite element analysis and experimental measurements, the nominal elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio are E(sub 33) = 10.7 GPa and v(sub 31) = 0.08 for the three triaxial braided composites tested. Strengths vary from 14 to 40 MPa depending on the resin. Relative to the in-plane properties, the through thickness modulus, fracture strength, failure strain, and Poisson's ratio are 1/5th, 1/30th, 1/6th, and 1/4th. Interlaminar failure occurred with varying degrees of fiber tear out along with little damage to axial tows, resulting is a smooth undulating fracture surface. Post cure temperature excursions to 177 deg C (350 deg F) had little effect on elastic constants but reduced the strength E862 based composites severely. The strength of PR520 and 5208 based composites increased.

The formation of ice on aircraft is a highly dynamic process during which ice will expand and contract upon freezing and undergoing changes in temperature. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations were performed investigating the stress build up in a simplified case with uniform temperature changes between an idealized ice sample and acrylic substrate. These results were used to place strain gages on custom-built acrylic and aluminum specimens; these specimens were then placed in icing conditions such that ice was grown on top of the specimen. Tee rosettes were placed in two configurations adjacent to thermocouple sensors. It was hypothesized that the ice would expand on freezing and contract as the temperature of the interface returned to the equilibrium conditions. While results from the aluminum specimens matched this hypothesis, results from the acrylic specimens show a short period of contraction followed by a much larger expansion at the interface, indicating more complex ice growth thermodynamics than anticipated. Samples were observed to delaminate, and the data suggests that the residual strain is significant to the shedding of ice for in-flight applications.

The effects of control mode and rate on the fracture toughness of ceramics were measured by using chevron-notched flexure specimen in accordance with ASTM C1421. The use of stroke control gave consistent results with about 2% variation in measured fracture toughness for a very wide range of rates (0.005 to 0.5 mm/min). Use of strain or CMOD control gave ~5% variation over a very wide range of rates, with the measurements being a function of rate. However, the effect was eliminated by use of dry nitrogen, implying a stress corrosion effect rather than a stability effect. With the use of nitrogen for strain control, fracture toughness values were within about 1% over a wide range of rates (1 to 80 /s). CMOD or strain control did allow stable crack extension well past maximum load, and thus is preferred for energy calculations. The effort is being used to confirm recommendations in ASTM International standard C1421 on fracture toughness measurement.

Numerous methodologies have been utilized to measure the adhesion strength of impact ice, and the data reported in the literature varies significantly from test to test. In order to initiate an investigation to determine the cause of this disparity, a new test methodology has been developed and utilized in the Icing Research Tunnel at the NASA Glenn Research Center. Data was obtained while varying the temperature, test section velocity, and cloud droplet mean volumetric diameter. The first data set acquired using this new test method is presented. New trends demonstrate the effect of annealing ice samples, with temperature being a key variable. Observations during the test and analysis of the results suggest the presence of large residual stresses in the samples.

With the use of a nitrogen environment during strain controlled tests, fracture toughness values were within about 1% over a wide range of rates (1 to 80 micons/m/s). CMOD or strain control did allow stable crack extension well past maximum force, and thus is preferred for energy calculations. The effort is being used to confirm recommendations in ASTM Test Method C1421 on fracture toughness measurement.

Fracture toughness is a critical structural design parameter and an excellent metric to rank structural materials. It determines fracture strength by way of the flaws, both inherent and induced, and defines the endpoint of the slow crack growth curve. The fracture toughness of glasses and structural and optical ceramics as measured by several techniques is compared. When good metrology is employed, the results are very comparable with two exceptions: materials exhibiting crack growth resistance and those with low SCG exponents. For materials exhibiting crack growth resistance (R-curve), the result is a function of extension and can be minimized with short cracks. For materials with low SCG exponents, such as glasses, elimination of the corrosive media and/or increasing the stress intensity rate minimizes effects. A summary of values is given for optical materials and glasses.

The mechanical properties of an aluminum oxynitride supplied as ground beams and disks were measured using ASTM International (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials) standard test methods. The slow crack growth tests were complicated by a "short" finish that increased strength scatter. Refining of the finish by more material removal in the second stage of grinding or the use of uniaxial grinding as specified in ASTM C1499 might have avoided the issue. The structural design parameters are an elastic modulus of E = 319 GPa, Poisson's ratio of v = 0.26, a fracture toughness of KIvb(A) = 2.18 MPa/m, slow crack growth (SCG) parameter n = 36, and SCG parameter A = 1.96 x 10-11 m/s.(MPa/m)n. For a ground finish, the Weibull parameters are a mean modulus of m = 14.0 and characteristic strength of sigma theta = 250.2 MPa. The 2015 vintage material exhibits similar mechanical properties to a 2010 vintage billet. Indentation flaws were not sensitive to the inherent crack growth mechanisms of this material and produced misleading results.

Physical and mechanical properties and performance of advanced ceramics and glasses are difficult to measure correctly without the proper techniques. For over three decades, ASTM Committee C28 on Advanced Ceramics, has developed high quality, rigorous, full-consensus standards (e.g., test methods, practices, guides, terminology) to measure properties and performance of monolithic and composite ceramics that may be applied to glasses in some cases. These standards testing particulars for many mechanical, physical, thermal, properties and performance of these materials. As a result these standards provide accurate, reliable, repeatable and complete data. Within Committee C28 users, producers, researchers, designers, academicians, etc. have written, continually updated, and validated through round-robin test programs, nearly 50 standards since the Committees founding in 1986. This paper provides a retrospective review of the 30 years of ASTM Committee C28 including a graphical pictogram listing of C28 standards along with examples of the tangible benefits of advanced ceramics standards to demonstrate their practical applications.

For three decades, ASTM Committee C28 on Advanced Ceramics, has developed numerous full-consensus standards (e.g., test methods, practices, guides, terminology) to measure various properties and performance of a monolithic and composite ceramics and coatings that, in some cases, may be applicable to glasses. These standards give the "what, how, how not, why, why not, etc." for many mechanical, physical, thermal, properties and performance of advanced ceramics. Use of these standards provides accurate, reliable, repeatable and complete data. Involvement in ASTM Committee C28 has included users, producers, researchers, designers, academicians, etc. who write, continually update, and validate through round robin test programmes, more than 45 standards in the 30 years since the Committee's inception in 1986. Included in this poster is a pictogram of the ASTM Committee C28 standards and how to obtain them either as i) individual copies with full details or ii) a complete collection in one volume. A listing of other ASTM committees of interest is included. In addition, some examples of the tangible benefits of standards for advanced ceramics are employed to demonstrate their practical application.

The slow crack growth parameters of soda-lime silicate were measured in distilled and salt water of various concentrations in order to determine if stress corrosion susceptibility is affected by the presence of salt and the contaminate formation of a weak sodium film. Past research indicates that solvents effect the rate of crack growth, however, the effects of salt have not been studied. The results indicate a small but statistically significant effect on the slow crack growth parameters A and n. However, for typical engineering purposes, the effect can be ignored.

The elastic constants, strength, fracture toughness, slow crack growth parameters, and mirror constant of a high lead glass supplied as tubes and funnels were measured using ASTM International (formerly ASTM, American Society for Testing and Materials) methods and modifications thereof. The material exhibits lower Young's modulus and slow crack growth exponent as compared to soda-lime silica glass. Highly modified glasses exhibit lower fracture toughness and slow crack growth exponent than high purity glasses such as fused silica.

Mechanical and physical properties of ceramic bodies can be difficult to measure correctly unless the proper techniques are used. The Advanced Ceramics Committee of ASTM, C-28, has developed dozens of consensus test standards and practices to measure various properties of a ceramic monolith, composite, or coating. The standards give the what, how, how not, and why for measurement of many mechanical, physical, thermal, and performance properties. Using these standards will provide accurate, reliable, and complete data for rigorous comparisons with other test results from your test lab, or another. The C-28 Committee has involved academics, producers, and users of ceramics to write and continually update more than 45 standards since the committees inception in 1986. Included in this poster is a pictogram of the C-28 standards and information on how to obtain individual copies with full details or the complete collection of all of the standards in one volume.

Post yield uniaxial tension-compression tests were run on a solution treated and aged (STA), titanium 6-percent aluminum 4-percent vanadium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy to determine the yield behavior on load reversal. The material exhibits plastic behavior almost immediately on load reversal implying a strong Bauschinger effect. The resultant stress-strain data was compared to a 1D mechanics model and a finite element model used to design a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV). Although the models and experimental data compare well for the initial loading and unloading in the tensile regime, agreement is lost in the compressive regime due to the Bauschinger effect and the assumption of perfect plasticity. The test data presented here are being used to develop more accurate cyclic hardening constitutive models for future finite element design analysis of COPVs.

Two nondestructive methods were applied to composite cylinder samples pressurized to failure in order to determine manufacturing quality and monitor damage progression under load. A unique computed tomography (CT) image processing methodology developed at NASA Glenn Research was used to assess the condition of the as-received samples while acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was used to identify both the extent and location of damage within the samples up to failure. Results show the effectiveness of both of these methods in identifying potentially critical fabrication issues and their resulting impact on performance.
