The jamming transition is an important feature of granular materials, with prior work showing an excess of low frequency modes in the granular analog to the density of states, the granular density of modes. In this work, we present an experimental method for acoustically measuring the granular density of modes using a single impact event to excite vibrational modes in an experimental, three dimensional, granular material. We test three different granular materials, all of which are composed of spherical beads. The first two systems are monodisperse collections of either 6 mm or 8 mm diameter beads. The third system is a bidisperse mixture of the previous two bead sizes. During data collection, the particles are confined to a box; on top of this box, and resting on the granular material, is a light, rigid sheet onto which pressure can be applied to the system. To excite the material, a steel impactor ball is dropped on top of the system. The response of the granular material to the impact pulse is recorded by piezoelectric sensors buried throughout the material, and the density of modes is computed from the spectrum of the velocity autocorrelation of these sensors. Our measurements of the density of modes show more low frequency modes at low pressure, consistent with previous experimental and numerical results, as well as several low frequency peaks in the density of modes that shift with applied pressure. Analysis of 8,804,545 electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs), observed by the $\mathit{Wind}$ spacecraft near 1 AU between January 1, 2005 and January 1, 2022, was performed to determine the spacecraft floating potential, $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$. $\mathit{Wind}$ was designed to be electrostatically clean, which helps keep the magnitude of $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$ small (i.e., $\sim$5--9 eV for nearly all intervals) and the potential distribution more uniform. We observed spectral enhancements of $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$ at frequencies corresponding to the inverse synodic Carrington rotation period with at least three harmonics. The 2D histogram of $\phi{\scriptstyle_{sc}}$ versus time also shows at least two strong peaks with a potential third, much weaker peak. These peaks vary in time with the intensity correlated with solar maximum. Thus, the spectral peaks and histogram peaks are likely due to macroscopic phenomena like coronal mass ejections (solar cycle dependence) and stream interaction regions (Carrington rotation dependence). This white paper submitted for 2020 Decadal Assessment of Plasma Science concerns the importance of multi-spacecraft missions to address fundamental questions concerning plasma turbulence. Plasma turbulence is ubiquitous in the universe, and it is responsible for the transport of mass, momentum, and energy in such diverse systems as the solar corona and wind, accretion discs, planet formation, and laboratory fusion devices. Turbulence is an inherently multi-scale and multi-process phenomenon, coupling the largest scales of a system to sub-electron scales via a cascade of energy, while simultaneously generating reconnecting current layers, shocks, and a myriad of instabilities and waves. The solar wind is humankind's best resource for studying the naturally occurring turbulent plasmas that permeate the universe. Since launching our first major scientific spacecraft mission, Explorer 1, in 1958, we have made significant progress characterizing solar wind turbulence. Yet, due to the severe limitations imposed by single point measurements, we are unable to characterize sufficiently the spatial and temporal properties of the solar wind, leaving many fundamental questions about plasma turbulence unanswered. Therefore, the time has now come wherein making significant additional progress to determine the dynamical nature of solar wind turbulence requires multi-spacecraft missions spanning a wide range of scales simultaneously. A dedicated multi-spacecraft mission concurrently covering a wide range of scales in the solar wind would not only allow us to directly determine the spatial and temporal structure of plasma turbulence, but it would also mitigate the limitations that current multi-spacecraft missions face, such as non-ideal orbits for observing solar wind turbulence. Plasma processes occurring in the corona and solar wind can be probed by studying the thermodynamic properties of different ion species. However, most in-situ observations of positive ions in the solar wind are taken at 1 AU, where information on their solar source properties may have been irreversibly erased. In this study we aimed to use the properties of alpha particles at heliocentric distances between 0.3 and 1 AU to study plasma processes occurring at the points of observation, and to infer processes occurring inside 0.3 AU by comparing our results to previous remote sensing observations of the plasma closer to the Sun. We reprocessed the original Helios positive ion distribution functions, isolated the alpha particle population, and computed the alpha particle number density, velocity, and magnetic field perpendicular and parallel temperatures. We then investigated the radial variation of alpha particle temperatures in fast solar wind observed between 0.3 and 1 AU. Between 0.3 and 1 AU alpha particles are heated in the magnetic field perpendicular direction, and cooled in the magnetic field parallel direction. Alpha particle evolution is bounded by the alpha firehose instability threshold, which provides one possible mechanism to explain the observed parallel cooling and perpendicular heating. Closer to the Sun our observations suggest that the alpha particles undergo heating the perpendicular direction, whilst the large magnetic field parallel temperatures observed at 0.3 AU may be due the combined effect of double adiabatic expansion and alpha particle deceleration inside 0.3 AU., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

In the near future, Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter will provide the first comprehensive in-situ measurements of the solar wind in the inner heliosphere since the Helios mission in the 1970s. We describe a reprocessing of the original Helios ion distribution functions to provide reliable and reproducible data to characterise the proton core population of the solar wind in the inner heliosphere. A systematic fitting of bi-Maxwellian distribution functions was performed to the raw Helios ion distribution function data to extract the proton core number density, velocity, and temperatures parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. We present radial trends of these derived proton parameters, forming a benchmark from which new measurements in the inner heliosphere will be compared to. The new dataset has been made openly available for other researchers to use, along with the source code used to generate it.

The firehose and mirror instabilities are thought to arise in a variety of space and astrophysical plasmas, constraining the pressure anisotropies and drifts between particle species. The plasma stability depends on all species simultaneously, meaning that a combined analysis is required. Here, we present the first such analysis in the solar wind, using the long-wavelength stability parameters to combine the anisotropies and drifts of all major species (core and beam protons, alphas, and electrons). At the threshold, the firehose parameter was found to be dominated by protons (67%), but also to have significant contributions from electrons (18%) and alphas (15%). Drifts were also found to be important, contributing 57% in the presence of a proton beam. A similar situation was found for the mirror, with contributions of 61%, 28%, and 11% for protons, electrons, and alphas, respectively. The parallel electric field contribution, however, was found to be small at 9%. Overall, the long-wavelength thresholds constrain the data well (<1% unstable), and the implications of this are discussed.

It has long been known that the energy in velocity and magnetic field fluctuations in the solar wind is not in equipartition. In this paper, we present an analysis of 5 years of Wind data at 1 AU to investigate the reason for this. The residual energy (difference between energy in velocity and magnetic field fluctuations) was calculated using both the standard magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) normalization for the magnetic field and a kinetic version, which includes temperature anisotropies and drifts between particle species. It was found that with the kinetic normalization, the fluctuations are closer to equipartition, with a mean normalized residual energy of sigma_r = -0.19 and mean Alfven ratio of r_A = 0.71. The spectrum of residual energy, in the kinetic normalization, was found to be steeper than both the velocity and magnetic field spectra, consistent with some recent MHD turbulence predictions and numerical simulations, having a spectral index close to -1.9. The local properties of residual energy and cross helicity were also investigated, showing that globally balanced intervals with small residual energy contain local patches of larger imbalance and larger residual energy at all scales, as expected for non-linear turbulent interactions.

We use a statistically significant set of measurements to show that the field-aligned electron heat flux $q_\parallel$ in the solar wind at 1 AU is consistent with the Spitzer-H\"{a}rm collisional heat flux $q_{sh}$ for temperature gradient scales larger than a few mean free paths $L_T \gtrsim 3.5 ~\lambda_{fp}$. This represents about 65% of the measured data and corresponds primarily to high $\beta$, weakly collisional plasma ('slow solar wind'). In the more collisionless regime $\lambda_{fp}/L_T \gtrsim 0.28$, the electron heat flux is limited to $q_\parallel/q_0 \sim 0.3$, independent of mean free path, where $q_0$ is the 'free-streaming' value; the measured $q_\parallel$ does not achieve the full $q_0$. This constraint $q_\parallel/q_0 \sim 0.3$ might be attributed to wave-particle interactions, an interplanetary electric potential, or inherent flux limitation. We also show a $\beta_e$ dependence to these results that is consistent with a local radial electron temperature profile $T_e \sim r^{-\alpha}$ that is a function of the thermal electron beta $\alpha = \alpha(\beta_e)$ and that the $\beta$ dependence of the collisionless regulation constraint is not obviously consistent with a whistler heat flux instability. We present Wind spacecraft observations of ion distributions showing field-aligned beams (FABs) and large-amplitude magnetic fluctuations composed of a series of shocklets and short large-amplitude magnetic structures (SLAMS). We show that the SLAMS are acting like a local quasi-perpendicular shock reflecting ions to produce the FABs. Previous FAB observations reported the source as the quasi-perpendicular bow shock. The SLAMS exhibit a foot-like magnetic enhancement with a leading magnetosonic whistler train, consistent with previous observations. The FABs are found to have T_b ~ 80-850 eV, V_b/V_sw ~ 1-2, T_{b,perp}/T{b,para} ~ 1-10, and n_b/n_i ~ 0.2-14%. Strong ion and electron heating are observed within the series of shocklets and SLAMS increasing by factors \geq 5 and \geq 3, respectively. Kinetic plasma theory is used to generate synthetic spacecraft data to analyze and interpret the compressible fluctuations in the inertial range of solar wind turbulence. The kinetic counterparts of the three familiar linear MHD wave modes---the fast, Alfven, and slow waves---are identified and the properties of the density-parallel magnetic field correlation for these kinetic wave modes is presented. The construction of synthetic spacecraft data, based on the quasi-linear premise---that some characteristics of magnetized plasma turbulence can be usefully modeled as a collection of randomly phased, linear wave modes---is described in detail. Theoretical predictions of the density-parallel magnetic field correlation based on MHD and Vlasov-Maxwell linear eigenfunctions are presented and compared to the observational determination of this correlation based on 10 years of Wind spacecraft data. It is demonstrated that MHD theory is inadequate to describe the compressible turbulent fluctuations and that the observed density-parallel magnetic field correlation is consistent with a statistically negligible kinetic fast wave energy contribution for the large sample used in this study. A model of the solar wind inertial range fluctuations is proposed comprised of a mixture of a critically balanced distribution of incompressible Alfvenic fluctuations and a critically balanced or more anisotropic than critical balance distribution of compressible slow wave fluctuations. These results imply that there is little or no transfer of large scale turbulent energy through the inertial range down to whistler waves at small scales., Comment: Accepted to Astrophysical Journal. 28 pages, 7 figures

We present a measurement of the spectral index of density fluctuations between ion and electron scales in solar wind turbulence using the EFI instrument on the ARTEMIS spacecraft. The mean spectral index at 1 AU was found to be -2.75 +/- 0.06, steeper than predictions for pure whistler or kinetic Alfven wave turbulence, but consistent with previous magnetic field measurements. The steep spectra are also consistent with expectations of increased intermittency or damping of some of the turbulent energy over this range of scales. Neither the spectral index nor the flattening of the density spectra before ion scales were found to depend on the proximity to the pressure anisotropy instability thresholds, suggesting that they are features inherent to the turbulent cascade.

We use a large, statistical set of measurements from the Wind spacecraft at 1 AU, and supporting synthetic spacecraft data based on kinetic plasma theory, to show that the compressible component of inertial range solar wind turbulence is primarily in the kinetic slow mode. The zero-lag cross correlation C(delta n, delta B_parallel) between proton density fluctuations delta n and the field-aligned (compressible) component of the magnetic field delta B_parallel is negative and close to -1. The typical dependence of C(delta n,delta B_parallel) on the ion plasma beta_i is consistent with a spectrum of compressible wave energy that is almost entirely in the kinetic slow mode. This has important implications for both the nature of the density fluctuation spectrum and for the cascade of kinetic turbulence to short wavelengths, favoring evolution to the kinetic Alfven wave mode rather than the (fast) whistler mode., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys Rev Letters

We present the first survey of electric field data using the ARTEMIS spacecraft in the solar wind to study inertial range turbulence. It was found that the average perpendicular spectral index of the electric field depends on the frame of measurement. In the spacecraft frame it is -5/3, which matches the magnetic field due to the large solar wind speed in Lorentz transformation. In the mean solar wind frame, the electric field is primarily due to the perpendicular velocity fluctuations and has a spectral index slightly shallower than -3/2, which is close to the scaling of the velocity. These results are an independent confirmation of the difference in scaling between the velocity and magnetic field, which is not currently well understood. The spectral index of the compressive fluctuations was also measured and found to be close to -5/3, suggesting that they are not only passive to the velocity but may also interact nonlinearly with the magnetic field.

The proton temperature anisotropy in the solar wind is known to be constrained by the theoretical thresholds for pressure anisotropy-driven instabilities. Here we use approximately 1 million independent measurements of gyroscale magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind to show for the first time that these fluctuations are enhanced along the temperature anisotropy thresholds of the mirror, proton oblique firehose, and ion cyclotron instabilities. In addition, the measured magnetic compressibility is enhanced at high plasma beta ($\beta_\parallel \gtrsim 1$) along the mirror instability threshold but small elsewhere, consistent with expectations of the mirror mode. The power in this frequency (the 'dissipation') range is often considered to be driven by the solar wind turbulent cascade, an interpretation which should be qualified in light of the present results. In particular, we show that the short wavelength magnetic fluctuation power is a strong function of collisionality, which relaxes the temperature anisotropy away from the instability conditions and reduces correspondingly the fluctuation power., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
