The transportation industry is experiencing vast digitalization as a plethora of technologies are being implemented to improve efficiency, functionality, and safety. Although technological advancements bring many benefits to transportation, integrating cyberspace across transportation sectors has introduced new and deliberate cyber threats. In the past, public agencies assumed digital infrastructure was secured since its vulnerabilities were unknown to adversaries. However, with the expansion of cyberspace, this assumption has become invalid. With the rapid advancement of wireless technologies, transportation systems are increasingly interconnected with both transportation and non-transportation networks in an internet-of-things ecosystem, expanding cyberspace in transportation and increasing threats and vulnerabilities. This study investigates some prominent reasons for the increase in cyber vulnerabilities in transportation. In addition, this study presents various collaborative strategies among stakeholders that could help improve cybersecurity in the transportation industry. These strategies address programmatic and policy aspects and suggest avenues for technological research and development. Although quantum machine learning has shown great promise, the practical application of quantum computers remains constrained in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era. To take advantage of quantum machine learning, we investigate the underlying mathematical principles of these quantum models and adapt them to classical machine learning frameworks. Specifically, we develop a classical weight-constrained neural network that generates weights based on quantum-inspired insights. We find that this approach can reduce the number of variables in a classical neural network by a factor of 135 while preserving its learnability. In addition, we develop a dropout method to enhance the robustness of quantum machine learning models, which are highly susceptible to adversarial attacks. This technique can also be applied to improve the adversarial resilience of the classical weight-constrained neural network, which is essential for industry applications, such as self-driving vehicles. The Virtual Traffic Light (VTL) eliminates the need for physical traffic signal infrastructure at intersections, leveraging Connected Vehicles (CVs) to optimize traffic flow. VTL assigns right-of-way dynamically based on factors such as estimated times of arrival (ETAs), the number of CVs in various lanes, and emission rates. These factors are considered in line with the objectives of the VTL application. Aiming to optimize traffic flow and reduce delays, the VTL system generates Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) data for CVs approaching an intersection, while considering the impact of each CV movement on others. However, the stochastic nature of vehicle arrivals at intersections complicates real-time optimization, challenging classical computing methods. To address this limitation, we develop a VTL method that leverages quantum computing to minimize stopped delays for CVs. The method formulates the VTL problem as a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem, a mathematical framework well-suited for quantum computing. Using D-Wave cloud-based quantum computer, our approach determines optimal solutions for right-of-way assignments under the standard National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) phasing system. The system was evaluated using the microscopic traffic simulator SUMO under varying traffic volumes. Our results demonstrate that the quantum-enabled VTL system reduces stopped delays and travel times compared to classical optimization-based systems. This approach not only enhances traffic management efficiency but also reduces the infrastructure costs associated with traditional traffic signals. The network of services, including delivery, farming, and environmental monitoring, has experienced exponential expansion in the past decade with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Yet, UAVs are not robust enough against cyberattacks, especially on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The CAN bus is a general-purpose vehicle-bus standard to enable microcontrollers and in-vehicle computers to interact, primarily connecting different Electronic Control Units (ECUs). In this study, we focus on solving some of the most critical security weaknesses in UAVs by developing a novel graph-based intrusion detection system (IDS) leveraging the Uncomplicated Application-level Vehicular Communication and Networking (UAVCAN) protocol. First, we decode CAN messages based on UAVCAN protocol specification; second, we present a comprehensive method of transforming tabular UAVCAN messages into graph structures. Lastly, we apply various graph-based machine learning models for detecting cyber-attacks on the CAN bus, including graph convolutional neural networks (GCNNs), graph attention networks (GATs), Graph Sample and Aggregate Networks (GraphSAGE), and graph structure-based transformers. Our findings show that inductive models such as GATs, GraphSAGE, and graph-based transformers can achieve competitive and even better accuracy than transductive models like GCNNs in detecting various types of intrusions, with minimum information on protocol specification, thus providing a generic robust solution for CAN bus security for the UAVs. We also compared our results with baseline single-layer Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and found that all our graph-based models perform better without using any decoded features based on the UAVCAN protocol, highlighting higher detection performance with protocol-independent capability.

The rise of quantum computing threatens traditional cryptographic algorithms that secure Transportation Cyber-Physical Systems (TCPS). Shor's algorithm poses a significant threat to RSA and ECC, while Grover's algorithm reduces the security of symmetric encryption schemes, such as AES. The objective of this paper is to underscore the urgency of transitioning to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to mitigate these risks in TCPS by analyzing the vulnerabilities of traditional cryptographic schemes and the applicability of standardized PQC schemes in TCPS. We analyzed vulnerabilities in traditional cryptography against quantum attacks and reviewed the applicability of NIST-standardized PQC schemes, including CRYSTALS-Kyber, CRYSTALS-Dilithium, and SPHINCS+, in TCPS. We conducted a case study to analyze the vulnerabilities of a TCPS application from the Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT) service package, i.e., Electronic Toll Collection, leveraging the Microsoft Threat Modeling tool. This case study highlights the cryptographic vulnerabilities of a TCPS application and presents how PQC can effectively counter these threats. Additionally, we evaluated CRYSTALS-Kyber's performance across wired and wireless TCPS data communication scenarios. While CRYSTALS-Kyber proves effective in securing TCPS applications over high-bandwidth, low-latency Ethernet networks, our analysis highlights challenges in meeting the stringent latency requirements of safety-critical wireless applications within TCPS. Cyber-physical systems rely on sensors, communication, and computing, all powered by integrated circuits (ICs). ICs are largely susceptible to various hardware attacks with malicious intents. One of the stealthiest threats is the insertion of a hardware trojan into the IC, causing the circuit to malfunction or leak sensitive information. Due to supply chain vulnerabilities, ICs face risks of trojan insertion during various design and fabrication stages. These trojans typically remain inactive until triggered. Once triggered, trojans can severely compromise system safety and security. This paper presents a non-invasive method for hardware trojan detection based on side-channel power analysis. We utilize the dynamic power measurements for twelve hardware trojans from IEEE DataPort. Our approach applies to signal processing techniques to extract crucial time-domain and frequency-domain features from the power traces, which are then used for trojan detection leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. The perception module in autonomous vehicles (AVs) relies heavily on deep learning-based models to detect and identify various objects in their surrounding environment. An AV traffic sign classification system is integral to this module, which helps AVs recognize roadway traffic signs. However, adversarial attacks, in which an attacker modifies or alters the image captured for traffic sign recognition, could lead an AV to misrecognize the traffic signs and cause hazardous consequences. Deepfake presents itself as a promising technology to be used for such adversarial attacks, in which a deepfake traffic sign would replace a real-world traffic sign image before the image is fed to the AV traffic sign classification system. In this study, the authors present how a generative adversarial network-based deepfake attack can be crafted to fool the AV traffic sign classification systems. The authors developed a deepfake traffic sign image detection strategy leveraging hybrid quantum-classical neural networks (NNs). This hybrid approach utilizes amplitude encoding to represent the features of an input traffic sign image using quantum states, which substantially reduces the memory requirement compared to its classical counterparts. The authors evaluated this hybrid deepfake detection approach along with several baseline classical convolutional NNs on real-world and deepfake traffic sign images. The results indicate that the hybrid quantum-classical NNs for deepfake detection could achieve similar or higher performance than the baseline classical convolutional NNs in most cases while requiring less than one-third of the memory required by the shallowest classical convolutional NN considered in this study.

Driven by the significant advantages offered by quantum computing, research in quantum machine learning has increased in recent years. While quantum speed-up has been demonstrated in some applications of quantum machine learning, a comprehensive understanding of its underlying mechanisms for improved performance remains elusive. Our study address this problem by investigating the functional expressibility of quantum circuits integrated within a convolutional neural network (CNN). Through numerical experiments on the MNIST, Fashion MNIST, and Letter datasets, our hybrid quantum-classical CNN model demonstrates superior feature selection capabilities and substantially reduces the required training steps compared to classical CNNs. Notably, we observe similar performance improvements when incorporating three other quantum-inspired activation functions in classical neural networks, indicating the benefits of adopting quantum-inspired activation functions. Additionally, we developed a hybrid quantum Chebyshev-polynomial network (QCPN) based on the properties of quantum activation functions. We demonstrate that a three-layer QCPN can approximate any continuous function, a feat not achievable by a standard three-layer classical neural network. Our findings suggest that quantum-inspired activation functions can reduce model depth while maintaining high learning capability, making them a promising approach for optimizing large-scale machine-learning models. Automated vehicle (AV) platooning has the potential to improve the safety, operational, and energy efficiency of surface transportation systems by limiting or eliminating human involvement in the driving tasks. The theoretical validity of the AV platooning strategies has been established and practical applications are being tested under real-world conditions. The emergence of sensors, communication, and control strategies has resulted in rapid and constant evolution of AV platooning strategies. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art knowledge in AV longitudinal platoon formation using a five-component platooning framework, which includes vehicle model, information-receiving process, information flow topology, spacing policy, and controller and discuss the advantages and limitations of the components. Based on the discussion about existing strategies and associated limitations, potential future research directions are presented.

In this study, we developed a real-time connected vehicle (CV) speed advisory application that uses public cloud services and tested it on a simulated signalized corridor for different roadway traffic conditions. First, we developed a scalable serverless cloud computing architecture leveraging public cloud services offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) to support the requirements of a real-time CV application. Second, we developed an optimization-based real-time CV speed advisory algorithm by taking a modular design approach, which makes the application automatically scalable and deployable in the cloud using the serverless architecture. Third, we developed a cloud-in-the-loop simulation testbed using AWS and an open-source microscopic roadway traffic simulator called Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). Our analyses based on different roadway traffic conditions showed that the serverless CV speed advisory application meets the latency requirement of real-time CV mobility applications. Besides, our serverless CV speed advisory application reduced the average stopped delay (by 77%) and the aggregated risk of collision (by 21%) at signalized intersection of a corridor. These prove the feasibility as well as the efficacy of utilizing public cloud infrastructure to implement real-time roadway traffic management applications in a CV environment.

This study developed a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based defense method for traffic sign classification in an autonomous vehicle (AV), referred to as the attack-resilient GAN (AR-GAN). The novelty of the AR-GAN lies in (i) assuming zero knowledge of adversarial attack models and samples and (ii) providing consistently high traffic sign classification performance under various adversarial attack types. The AR-GAN classification system consists of a generator that denoises an image by reconstruction, and a classifier that classifies the reconstructed image. The authors have tested the AR-GAN under no-attack and under various adversarial attacks, such as Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM), DeepFool, Carlini and Wagner (C&W), and Projected Gradient Descent (PGD). The authors considered two forms of these attacks, i.e., (i) black-box attacks (assuming the attackers possess no prior knowledge of the classifier), and (ii) white-box attacks (assuming the attackers possess full knowledge of the classifier). The classification performance of the AR-GAN was compared with several benchmark adversarial defense methods. The results showed that both the AR-GAN and the benchmark defense methods are resilient against black-box attacks and could achieve similar classification performance to that of the unperturbed images. However, for all the white-box attacks considered in this study, the AR-GAN method outperformed the benchmark defense methods. In addition, the AR-GAN was able to maintain its high classification performance under varied white-box adversarial perturbation magnitudes, whereas the performance of the other defense methods dropped abruptly at increased perturbation magnitudes.

The environmental impacts of global warming driven by methane (CH4) emissions have catalyzed significant research initiatives in developing novel technologies that enable proactive and rapid detection of CH4. Several data-driven machine learning (ML) models were tested to determine how well they identified fugitive CH4 and its related intensity in the affected areas. Various meteorological characteristics, including wind speed, temperature, pressure, relative humidity, water vapor, and heat flux, were included in the simulation. We used the ensemble learning method to determine the best-performing weighted ensemble ML models built upon several weaker lower-layer ML models to (i) detect the presence of CH4 as a classification problem and (ii) predict the intensity of CH4 as a regression problem.

The traditional build-and-expand approach is not a viable solution to keep roadway traffic rolling safely, so technological solutions, such as Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), are favored. AVs have considerable potential to increase the carrying capacity of roads, ameliorate the chore of driving, improve safety, provide mobility for those who cannot drive, and help the environment. However, they also raise concerns over whether they are socially responsible, accounting for issues such as fairness, equity, and transparency. Regulatory bodies have focused on AV safety, cybersecurity, privacy, and legal liability issues, but have failed to adequately address social responsibility. Thus, existing AV developers do not have to embed social responsibility factors in their proprietary technology. Adverse bias may therefore occur in the development and deployment of AV technology. For instance, an artificial intelligence-based pedestrian detection application used in an AV may, in limited lighting conditions, be biased to detect pedestrians who belong to a particular racial demographic more efficiently compared to pedestrians from other racial demographics. Also, AV technologies tend to be costly, with a unique hardware and software setup which may be beyond the reach of lower-income people. In addition, data generated by AVs about their users may be misused by third parties such as corporations, criminals, or even foreign governments. AVs promise to dramatically impact labor markets, as many jobs that involve driving will be made redundant. We argue that the academic institutions, industry, and government agencies overseeing AV development and deployment must act proactively to ensure that AVs serve all and do not increase the digital divide in our society.

In this paper, we theoretically develop and numerically validate an asymmetric linear bilateral control model (LBCM). The novelty of the asymmetric LBCM is that using this model all the follower vehicles in a platoon can adjust their acceleration and deceleration to closely follow a constant desired time gap to improve platoon operational efficiency while maintaining local and string stability. We theoretically analyze the local stability of the asymmetric LBCM using the condition for asymptotic stability of a linear time-invariant system and prove the string stability of the asymmetric LBCM using a space gap error attenuation approach. Then, we evaluate the efficacy of the asymmetric LBCM by simulating a closely coupled cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) platoon of fully automated trucks in various non-linear acceleration and deceleration states. We choose automated truck platooning as a case study since heavy-duty trucks experience higher delays and lags in the powertrain system, and limited acceleration and deceleration capabilities than passenger cars. To evaluate the platoon operational efficiency of the asymmetric LBCM, we compare the performance of the asymmetric LBCM to a baseline model, i.e., the symmetric LBCM, for different powertrain delays and lags. Our analyses found that the asymmetric LBCM can handle any combined powertrain delays and lags up to 0.6 sec while maintaining a constant desired time gap during a stable platoon operation, whereas the symmetric LBCM fails to ensure stable platoon operation as well as maintain a constant desired time gap for any combined powertrain delays and lags over 0.2 sec. These findings demonstrate the potential of the asymmetric LBCM in improving platoon operational efficiency and stability of an automated truck platoon.

This study focuses on the feasibility of commercial cloud services for connected vehicle (CV) applications in a Transportation Cyber-Physical Systems (TCPS) environment. TCPS implies that CVs, in addition to being connected with each other, communicates with the transportation and computing infrastructure to fulfill application requirements. The motivation of this study is to accelerate commercial cloud-based CV application development by presenting the lessons learned by implementing a CV mobility application using Amazon Web Services (AWS). The feasibility of the cloud-based CV application is assessed at three levels: (i) the development of a cloud-based TCPS architecture, (ii) the deployment of a cloud-based CV application using AWS, and (iii) the evaluation of the cloud-based CV application. We implemented this CV mobility application using a serverless cloud architecture and found that such a cloud-based TCPS environment could meet the permissible delay limits of CV mobility applications. Commercial cloud services, as an integral part of TCPS, could reduce costs associated with establishing and maintaining vast computing infrastructure for supporting CV applications. As the CV penetration levels on the surface transportation systems increase significantly over the next several years, scaling the backend infrastructure to support such applications is a critical issue. This study shows how commercial cloud services could automatically scale the backend infrastructure to meet the rapidly changing demands of real-world CV applications.
