In this paper we study the performance of spectrally-encoded spread-time (SE/ST) technique when applied to ultrawideband (UWB) signals in the context of wireless code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communication. In this technique UWB pulses are spectrally encoded with pseudorandom codes that are assigned uniquely to each user. We shall show that the SE/ST ultrawideband system provides an appropriate multi-user capacity in realistic UWB channels, along with the ability of narrowband interference (NBI) suppression. To this end, after obtaining a suitable statistical model for spectrally encoded spread-time signals, we investigate the performance of the system in the presence of multiple-access and narrowband interferers, and simple and accurate approximations will also be developed which are in good agreement with simulation results. In this paper we examine the transmission of two types of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals, multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) and impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB), over single mode fiber at 1550 nm. In order to investigate the impact of optical components such as laser diode, external modulator and single mode fiber on UWB signals, we develop mathematical models for these components. These models are experimentally verified and corresponding numerical parameter values are obtained by experiment. Using these models we discuss the transmission of two types of UWB signals over single mode fiber. A new figure of merit namely distortion factor is defined. Using this figure of merit the direct modulation of distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode and the external modulation with Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) are compared in terms of their impact on UWB signals. Using intensive simulation we also compare MB-OFDM and IR-UWB in terms of their sensitivity to the distortions of a UWB over fiber link using error vector magnitude (EVM) as a figure of merit. An EVM measurement is accomplished for a MB-OFDM over fiber link. The impact of IR-UWB pulse shape on its resistance to the nonlinearity of modulation transfer function is also investigated. In this paper, we analyze and discuss the performance limits of optical clock recovery systems using a phase-locked loop (PLL) structure with nonlinear two-photon absorption (TPA) phase detection scheme. The motivation in analyzing the aforementioned optical PLL with TPA receiver structure is due to a recent successful experiment reported in . We characterize the mathematical structure of PLLs with TPA, so as to evaluate the performance limits on optical clock recovery mechanism. More specifically, we identify two intrinsic sources of phase noise in the system namely, the on- off nature of the incoming data pulses and the detector's shot noise that ultimately limit the performance of the aforementioned optical clock recovery system. In our characterization of the clock recovery system, we obtain the power spectral densities (PSDs) of the signals involved in the PLL and use the PSDs to obtain a mathematical expression for the variance of the timing jitter inherently associated with the recovered clock. We examine the variance of the introduced timing jitter as a function of different system parameters such as power, bit rate, and pulsewidth of the data and clock signals. An interesting result is that the duty cycle factor near 4 in return to zero optical pulses is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the variance of the system phase noise. A novel packet-based photonic label switching router for a multirate all-optical switch using generalized multiprotocol label switching is proposed. The idea is based on using optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) as multiplexing technique and treating OCDMA codes as labels. The system can coexist with current wavelength division multiplexing systems on the same infrastructure. The concept of switch fabric is introduced. Label processing and label swapping functionalities of the switch are discussed. In-depth analyses are made for spectrally phase-encoded OCDMA (SPE-OCDMA) due to its capabilities of supporting high data rates, large code cardinality, and its secure transmission. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a nonlinear two-photon-absorption (TPA) receiver and compare its performance with that of a single-photon-absorption (SPA) receiver in the context of spectral-phase-encoded optical code-division multiple access (CDMA) technique. The performances for the above systems are evaluated for two different transmission scenarios, namely, asynchronous and slot-level synchronous transmitters. Performance evaluation includes different sources of degradation such as multiple-access interference, noise due to optical amplification, shot noise, and thermal noise. In obtaining the performance, the mean and variance of the received signal in each of the above techniques are derived, and bit error rate is obtained using Gaussian approximation. In general, it is shown that TPA receivers are superior in performance with respect to SPA receivers when the receiver employs a much slower photodetector in comparison with the laser's transmitted pulse duration. In this paper, the authors analyze conditions under which they can be certain on the intensity addition of a given device, such as tapped-delay lines, used in digital incoherent all-optical communication systems. A general expression for phase-induced intensity noise that is applicable to all types of semiconductor lasers is derived by defining an optical self-SNR expression that can be used to analyze and measure phase-induced intensity noise. The result shows that in order to have a minimal phase-induced intensity noise in most digital optical incoherent systems, a large optical self-SNR, e.g., 20 dB or more, is needed. This in turn is shown to place a limit on the maximum rate of processing in a typical incoherent optical system even neglecting the bandwidth limitation of the photodetector. In this paper, the authors study the performance of a two-photon absorption (TPA) receiver in a typical communication system employing an optical amplifier. For the study, the authors develop a comprehensive performance analysis, taking into account noises due to an optical amplifier, shot noise, and thermal noise, using Gaussian approximation technique. In evaluating the performance of the system using this technique, the mean and the variance of the received signal will be derived. Due to the low cardinality of optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) with a correlation value of 1, the capability of an internal channel-coding scheme cannot be applied effectively for an increasing number of simultaneous users in a typical fiber-optic code division multiple-access (FO-CDMA) system. In this paper, we consider applying the internal channel-coding scheme to the framed time-hopping (FTH) FO-CDMA system. Due to the extremely high cardinality of the spreading sequence in FTH FO-CDMA, the technique highlights the ability of the internal channel-coding scheme to increase the effective number of users in an FO-CDMA system. For the FTH FO-CDMA system, we only consider a Poisson noise-limited channel and do not take into account the physical fiber-optic channel impairments. Our simulation and analytical results show that, due to the large cardinality of spreading codes, the capability of the internal channel-coding technique to increase the maximum number of simultaneous users becomes more obvious in the FTH FO-CDMA system. A communication system incorporating a bit rate limiter (BRL) device is analyzed using recently proposed statistical models for power splitters and combiners. We also consider the possible optical attenuation and amplification before and after BRL device. We obtain the total output moment generating function (MGF) of the number of photoelectrons at the receiver end for two possible synchronization procedures. We consider the structure and performance of a multistage decoding scheme for an internally bandwidth efficient convolutionally coded Poisson fiber-optic code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system. The decoder is implemented electronically in several stages in which in each stage, the interfering users' coded bit decisions obtained in the previous stage is applied for computing the likelihood of the coded symbols of the desired user. The first stage is a soft-input Viterbi decoder for the internally coded scheme, in which the soft-input coded symbol likelihood values are computed by considering the multiuser interference as a noise signal. The likelihood of coded symbol computed in each stage is then entered into the convolutional decoder for the next bit decisions. The convolutional codes that are used for demonstrating the performance of the multistage decoder are super orthogonal codes (SOCs). We derive the bit error rates (BERs) of the proposed decoder for internally coded Poisson fiber-optic CDMA systems using optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) along with both ON-OFF keying (OOK) and binary pulse position modulation (BPPM) schemes. Our numerical results indicate that the proposed decoding scheme substantially outperforms the single-stage soft-input Viterbi decoder. We also derive the upper bound on the probability of error of a decoder for the known interference case, which is the ultimate performance of a multiuser decoder, and compare the result with that of the soft-input Viterbi decoder. In this paper, we present a new methodology for analysis of all-optical fiber-optic code-division multiple-access (FO-CDMA) networks. In this analysis, we propose statistical models, based on photon-counting techniques, for some basic elements of the network, such as splitters, combiners, star couplers, and FO-CDMA passive encoders/decoders. By following the statistical variation of the photon-count of the string of pulses that constitutes the address sequence in an FO-CDMA network, we will be able to reveal the quantum-limited optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) required at the transmitter output to meet the performance limits. Moreover, considering receiver thermal noise and source extinction ratio, we explore the role of using an optical preamplifier before the detector and the dependence of the performance on the transmitted power and the weight of the employed optical orthogonal codes (OOCs).
