Behcet's disease is a rare, chronic, lifelong disorder that involves inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body. Symptoms of Behcet's disease includes recurrent oral ulcers (resembling canker sores), recurrent genital ulcers, and eye inflammation. The disorder may also cause various types of shin lesions, arthritis, bowel inflammation, and meningitis (inflammation of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord). Behcet's disease generally begins when patients are in their 20s or 30s, although all age groups may be affected. Behcet's is a multisystem disease: it may involve all organs and affect the central nervous system, causing memory loss and impaired speech, balance, and movement. The effects of the disease may include blindness, stroke, swelling of the spinal cord, and intestinal complications In this report we present a case of pregnancy in a patient with Behcet's disease. The patient had a good response to corticosteroids. Until now she is fine and her child is normal. A short review of this disorder and pregnancy is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Meconium peritonitis is a rare condition occurring in 1/35,000 live births. Any condition causing bowel obstruction may be responsible for bowel distension and perforation, leading to a sterile chemical peritonitis Meconium ileus, which is related to cystic fibrosis in 90% of cases, accounts for less than 25%. More frequently, mechanical bowel obstruction is provoked by intestinal atresia, volvulus, intussuseption or herniation. Polyhydramnios is present in 10-64% of cases and has been attributed to difficulty in swallowing as the result of deficient bowel peristalsis. On rare occasions, fetal hydrops may be present. Prenatal diagnosis is suspected when fetal intra-abdominal calcifications are observed, especially in association with fetal ascites and polyhydramnios. Fetal bowel obstruction associated with fast developing fetal ascites or hydrops is usually noted. On rare occasions, however, fetal ascites regresses, intestinal dilatation disappears and peristalsis reappears. Only hyperechoic area remains. Sometimes, intraabdominal meconium pseudocysts are the sole remnants of the meconium peritonitis. It is presented the case of a forty year-old female patient, five para, 36.2 pregnancy, with US that reported ascitis, dilated bowel, intraabdominal calcification, making diagnosis of meconial peritonitis, with positive markers for cystic fibrosis. Background: DNA methylation is the best epigenetic mechanism for explaining the interactions between nutrients and genes involved in intrauterine growth and development programming. A possible contributor of methylation abnormalities to congenital heart disease is the folate methylation regulatory pathway; however, the mechanisms and methylation patterns of VSD-associated genes are not fully understood., Objective: To determine if maternal dietary intake of folic acid (FA) is related to the methylation status (MS) of VSD-associated genes (AXIN1, MTHFR, TBX1, and TBX20)., Methods: Prospective case-control study; 48 mothers and their children were evaluated. The mothers' dietary variables were collected through a food frequency questionnaire focusing on FA and the consumption of supplements with FA. The MS of promoters of genes was determined in the children., Results: The intake of FA supplements was significantly higher in the control mothers. In terms of maternal folic acid consumption, significant differences were found in the first trimester of pregnancy. Significant differences were observed in the MS of MTHFR and AXIN1 genes in VSD and control children. A correlation between maternal FA supplementation and MS of AXIN1 and TBX20 genes was found in control and VSD children, respectively., Conclusions: A lower MS of AXIN1 genes and a higher MS of TBX20 genes is associated with FA maternal supplementation.

Objective: To evaluate natural history of fetuses congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) prenatally diagnosed in countries where termination of pregnancy is not legally allowed and to predict neonatal survival according to lung area and liver herniation., Methods: Prospective study including antenatally diagnosed CDH cases managed expectantly during pregnancy in six tertiary Latin American centres. The contribution of the observed/expected lung-to-head ratio (O/E-LHR) and liver herniation in predicting neonatal survival was assessed., Results: From the total population of 380 CDH cases, 144 isolated fetuses were selected showing an overall survival rate of 31.9% (46/144). Survivors showed significantly higher O/E-LHR (56.5% vs 34.9%; P < .001), lower proportion of liver herniation (34.8% vs 80.6%, P < .001), and higher gestational age at birth (37.8 vs 36.2 weeks, P < 0.01) than nonsurvivors. Fetuses with an O/E-LHR less than 35% showed a 3.4% of survival; those with an O/E-LHR between 35% and 45% showed 28% of survival with liver up and 50% with liver down; those with an O/E-LHR greater than 45% showed 50% of survival rate with liver up and 76.9% with liver down., Conclusions: Neonatal mortality in CDH is higher in Latin American countries. Background: Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease that affects the pancreatic tissue, which have been proposed numerous causes, with unpredictable results, it appears as a complication of rare occurrence, so the information on maternal and fetal complications is limited. Objective: Exposing obstetric and perinatal outcomes of patients diagnosed with pancreatitis complicating pregnancy., Methodology: A retrospective, observational, transverse and descriptive study; data were obtained and analyzed by reviewing medical records of patients diagnosed with pancreatitis and pregnancy., Results: A total of 9 cases were included, corresponding to an incidence of 39/100,000 live births in the time period analyzed. The median age was 22, the mean gestational age at diagnosis was 31 weeks. 4 patients had cesarean delivery and 2 patients natural delivery. 3 patients had Ranson 3, a 2 and other Ranson Ranson 1 the remaining 4 Ranson 0. All products had adequate evolution. A case of maternal death as a complication of the disease was presented, because of metabolic acidosis and ARDS., Conclusion: Acute pancreatitis is an entity of variable incidence, which increases their appearance with advancing pregnancy, and can lead to serious complications for pregnant women. It is extremely important to pay attention to early symptoms of the disease, and achieve an accurate diagnosis and provide adequate multidisciplinary management for a better prognosis for maternal-fetal binomial.
