Abstract

The article analyzes the low female labor participation in Mexico and proposes that it is due to labor discouragement caused by the wage gap. It is concluded that women are more likely to enter the labor market when the perception of the wage gap is reduced, and they withdraw when it increases. The importance of reducing the wage gap to increase female labor participation is highlighted. Additionally, it is mentioned that wage discrimination is still present in the world and that there are differences in the wage gap according to the sector and region of residence. Abstract

ABSTRACT:Background:The early clinical predictors of respiratory failure in Latin Americans with Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) have scarcely been studied. This is of particular importance since Latin America has a high frequency of axonal GBS variants that may imply a worse prognosis.Methods:We studied 86 Mexican patients with GBS admitted to the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, a referral center of Mexico City, to describe predictors of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).Results:The median age was 40 years (interquartile range: 26–53.5), with 60.5% men (male-to-female ratio: 1.53). Most patients (65%) had an infectious antecedent (40.6% gastrointestinal). At admission, 38% of patients had a Medical Research Council (MRC) sum score <30. Axonal subtypes predominated (60.5%), with acute motor axonal neuropathy being the most prevalent (34.9%), followed by acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (32.6%), acute motor sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN) (25.6%), and Fisher syndrome (7%). Notably, 15.1% had onset in upper limbs, 75.6% dysautonomia, and 73.3% pain. In all, 86% received either IVIg (9.3%) or plasma exchange (74.4%). IMV was required in 39.5% patients (72.7% in AMSAN). A multivariate model without including published prognostic scores yielded the time since onset to admission <15 days, axonal variants, MRC sum score <30, and bulbar weakness as independent predictors of IMV. The model including grading scales yielded lower limbs onset, Erasmus GBS respiratory insufficiency score (EGRIS) >4, and dysautonomia as predictors.Conclusion:These results suggest that EGRIS is a good prognosticator of IMV in GBS patients with a predominance of axonal electrophysiological subtypes, but other early clinical data should also be considered.

Abstract

Despite the relevance of contractionary episodes of GDP, in practice, it is common to use incorrectly -as synonyms- terms such as recession, depression, slowdown, stagfation and defation, so it is important to characterize them punctually. For this purpose, we use a quantitative criterion based on Artis et al. (1997). We found two moderate recessions: a) 1982Q3-1983Q4 and 1986Q1-1987Q1, which in fact form a single but very long one, b) another mild 2001Q2-2002Q1 recession, and c) two short depressions: 1995Q1-1995-Q4 and 2008Q4-2009Q4. Abstract

"Estimamos los determinantes de largo plazo del empleo femenino en el mercado laboral mexicano (2000.II-2009.IV) mediante la técnica de corrección de error estructural (SVEC) que se deriva de la identificación de un sistema cointegrado estimado por el procedimiento de Johansen. Encontramos varios aspectos muy relevantes. Por un lado, existe una fuerte y rápida inserción de las mujeres en el mercado laboral y así también una tendencia a la precarización del empleo femenino en la medida que los nuevos puestos laborales recaen centralmente en la informalidad. Por otro lado, que la ocupación formal masculina no desplaza a la de las mujeres, por el contrario parece existir un efecto positivo de ese grupo sobre éste. Por último, encontramos una relación negativa entre el desempleo y la ocupación de las mujeres, lo cual sería un símil de la ley de Okun (1962) en el sentido de que el desempleo reduce el crecimiento y éste a su vez la ocupación en el largo plazo."

Abstract

"Based on an extension of Todaro’s (1976) canonical migration model, a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) (2007Q3-2012Q3, Q indicates the corresponding quarter. Here, the period from the third quarter of 2007 until the same quarter of 2012.) was estimated. We prove that the decli - ne in Mexican migratory flows to the United States since 2005 is related to the strengthening of the latter country’s punitive actions, aimed at undocumented immigration, and also to the rise in sectorial and regional unemployment in the US relative to Mexico’s unemployment rates. Some other additional and new factors, such as rising monetary costs, risks and dangers, including the death of migrants that trek through isolated areas, have also reduced attempts to cross into the United States."
