Abstract

We study the compression of bundles of aligned macroscopic fibers with intrinsic shape disorder, as found in human hair and in many other natural and man-made systems. We show by a combination of experiments, numerical simulations and theory how the statistical properties of the shapes of the fibers control the collective mechanical behaviour of the bundles. This work paves the way for designing aligned fibrous matter with pre-required properties from large numbers of individual strands of selected geometry and rigidity., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

10. Acoustic emission source localization in thin metallic plates: a single-sensor approach based on multimodal edge reflections

Abstract

This paper presents a new acoustic emission (AE) source localization for isotropic plates with reflecting boundaries. This approach that has no blind spot leverages multimodal edge reflections to identify AE sources with only a single sensor. The implementation of the proposed approach involves three main steps. First, the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and the dispersion curves of the fundamental Lamb wave modes are utilized to estimate the distance between an AE source and a sensor. This step uses a modal acoustic emission approach. Then, an analytical model is proposed that uses the estimated distances to simulate the edge-reflected waves. Finally, the correlation between the experimental and the simulated waveforms is used to estimate the location of AE sources. Hsu-Nielson pencil lead break (PLB) tests were performed on an aluminum plate to validate this algorithm and promising results were achieved. Based on these results, the paper reports the statistics of the localization errors.

25. Long Short-Term Memory Autoencoder for Anomaly Detection in Rails Using Laser Doppler Vibrometer Measurements

Abstract

This study presents an application of Long Short-Term Memory Autoencoder (LSTM AE) for the detection of broken rails based on laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) measurements. This work is part of an ongoing project aimed at developing a non-contact damage detection system using LDV measurements. The damage detection system consists of two laser Doppler vibrometers (LDV) mounted on a moving rail car to measure vibrations induced on the rail head. Field tests were carried out at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, CO, to collect the vibrational data. This study focused on the detection of broken rails. To simulate the reflected and transmitted waves induced by the broken rail, a welded joint was used. The data was collected from moving LDV measurements, in which the train was operating at three different speeds: 16km/h (10mph), 32km/h (20mph), and 48km/h (30mph). After obtaining the data, filtering and signal processing were applied to obtain the signal features in time and frequency domains. Next, correlation analysis and principal component analysis were carried out for feature selection and dimension reduction to determine the input used to train and test the LSTM AE model. In this study, the LSTM AE models were trained based on different data sets for anomaly detection. Consequently, an automatic anomaly detection approach for anomaly detection based on the LSTM AE model was evaluated. The results show that the LSTM AE model can efficiently detect the anomaly based on the selected features at three different speeds.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the monitoring of corrosion in steel pipelines using the acoustic emission (AE) technique. Large uniform corrosion in pipes causes significant wall-thickness loss, and the intensity of the AE activity is correlated with the severity of the corrosion. A new approach for considering the helical propagation of corrosion-related AE events is proposed. Specifically, it is suggested that a longer portion of conventional AE hit is considered to account for multiple arrivals of Lamb-type modes traveling helically in the circumference of the pipe known as helical guided waves (HGW). Using the recorded amplitude of these events, a qualitative corrosion monitoring approach is proposed using the b -value analysis. An accelerated corrosion test on a steel pipe instrumented with a network of AE sensors is carried out to validate the proposed approach. Moreover, a numerical study is performed to evaluate the energy variation of HGW during the corrosion process. Both experimental and numerical results suggest that helical Lamb-type AE has the potential to be utilized for corrosion monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
