The Late Cretaceous-Early Paleocene Shiranish and Aliji formations have been studied in three selected wells in Jambur Oil Field (Ja-50, Ja-53, and Ja-67) in Kirkuk, Northeastern Iraq. This study included lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy. The Late Campanian-Maastrichtian Shiranish Formation consist mainly of thin marly and chalky limestone beds overlain by thin marl beds, with some beds of marly limestone representing an outer shelf basinal environment, the unconformable contact with the above Middle Paleocene-Early Eocene Aliji Formation contain layers of limestone with marly limestone and chalky limestone which represents an outer shelf basinal environment. Five Biozones in the Shiranish Formation were determined which are: 1.Globotruncanita calcarata Range Zone (part). 2.Globotruncanella havanensis Partial Range Zone. 3.Globotruncana aegyptiaca Interval Zone. 4.Gansserina gansseri Interval Zone (Part). 5.Abathomphalus mayaroensis Range Zone. While in Aliji Formation there were two biozones determined which are: 1.Guembelitria Cretacea Partial-Range Zone. 2.Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina Total-Range Zone.

Abstract

The high demand for the world market for cocoa has made the government and people of East Kolaka Regency rejuvenate the cocoa plants that have been managed so far. Plants that are very old and very low in productivity naturally have been rejuvenated into new plants. Since 2017 and 2018, 550 hectares of rejuvenation have been started by involving five Community Economic Institutions (LEM) in Aere and Lambandia Districts. This effort is expected to restore the glory of cocoa in this area with more technology-based management. The establishment of Corporate Agriculture, which has been promoted by the government, could lead this area to become a pilot project in the future. Based on the findings in this study, it can be concluded that the cocoa farmers participating in the program are very enthusiastic about following directions from the government as program implementers. Even though the operational cost assistance is very limited to the farmers participating in the program, this program has been implemented very well. This proves that the plant can grow well and at the age of three years the plant has started producing about 10 trees per tree and it is hoped that in the next five years, cocoa productivity can reach 1500-3000 kg per hectare per year. For the sustainable implementation of this program, it is hoped that there will be other programs that can direct farmers to create added value. In addition to planting, they can also handle post-harvest properly so that the quality produced matches the needs of industry and the world market. Thus, the price obtained is higher than the price received so far.

Abstract

Background & Aims: The Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) Obeticholic Acid (OCA) International Study of Efficacy (POISE) randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that OCA reduced biomarkers associated with adverse clinical outcomes (ie, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase) in patients with PBC. The objective of this study was to evaluate time to first occurrence of liver transplantation or death in patients with OCA in the POISE trial and open-label extension vs comparable non-OCA–treated external controls. Methods: Propensity scores were generated for external control patients meeting POISE eligibility criteria from 2 registry studies (Global PBC and UK-PBC) using an index date selected randomly between the first and last date (inclusive) on which eligibility criteria were met. Cox proportional hazards models weighted by inverse probability of treatment assessed time to death or liver transplantation. Additional analyses (Global PBC only) added hepatic decompensation to the composite end point and assessed efficacy in patients with or without cirrhosis. Results: During the 6-year follow-up, there were 5 deaths or liver transplantations in 209 subjects in the POISE cohort (2.4%), 135 of 1381 patients in the Global PBC control (10.0%), and 281 of 2135 patients in the UK-PBC control (13.2%). The hazard ratios (HRs) for the primary outcome were 0.29 (95% CI, 0.10–0.83) for POISE vs Global PBC and 0.30 (95% CI, 0.12–0.75) for POISE vs UK-PBC. In the Global PBC study, HR was 0.20 (95% CI, 0.03–1.22) for patients with cirrhosis and 0.31 (95% CI, 0.09–1.04) for those without cirrhosis; HR was 0.42 (95% CI, 0.21–0.85) including hepatic decompensation. Conclusions: Patients treated with OCA in a trial setting had significantly greater transplant-free survival than comparable external control patients.

The Cenomanian-Early Turonian Mishrif Formation, which has been studied in selected Oilfields of Tuba Well (TU-5, TU-24, TU-40) and Zubair Well (ZB-41, ZB-42, and ZB-46), which are located in the Mesopotamian basin, southern Iraq, and considered major carbonate reservoir in Iraq and the Arabian Gulf. Seven microfacies types are identified showing that Mishrif formation deposited in five sedimentary facies: 1. Basin Facies Associations; 2. 10. Campanian Calciturbidites from Northeast Iraq, Kurdistan Region: Insight into Paleogeography and Source Areas of the Shiranish Formation

Abstract

Calciturbidites are similar to siliciclastic turbidites in structure, texture, basin physiography and processes of deposition; nevertheless, their clasts (grains) are carbonate minerals. Turbidity currents transport carbonate grains from carbonate source areas and coastal areas to the deep basins after passing the shelf (peri-platform). These currents are triggered by short-lived catastrophic events, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, marine slides, and typhoons. The Late Cretaceous Zagros Foreland and Hinterland in NE-Iraq (Kurdistan Region) was an active source for the shedding of voluminous sediments to the deep basin of Zagros Foreland Basin. During late Campanian, Shiranish Formation was deposited in the foreland basin; it occurs in the most famous oil fields in the Middle East and represents hemplagite facies (much diluted turbidite facies). Previous studies have not broached the origins of Shiranish Formation, neither in detail or briefly. Conversely, the present study focused on linking the calciturbidite system to the origin of the deposition of the Shiranish Formation via derivation from main carbonate source areas. Along long distance, the sediments crossed the marginal slope, scoring submarine channels and depositing coarse detrital carbonates before reaching the basin plain. On the plain, mostly the fine fractions have settled down and mixed with pelagic sediment. The calciturbidite evidence could be tracked for more than 40 km in the studied area from the slope and outer shelf (present Thrust Zone) to the basin plain (High Folded zone). In several places, channelized detrital laminated limestones are found inside Shiranish Formation and in the most proximal area near Qaladiza town. Bouma sequences are clearly observable with erosional base and A, B, and C divisions. These calciturbidites are keys for picturing Campanian paleogeography and nature of the source area which was consisted of limestone.

11. Behaviour of Uniaxial Reinforced Concrete Columns Strengthened with Ultra-High Performance Concrete and Fiber Reinforced Polymers

Abstract

This article investigates the behaviour of strengthened concrete columns using jacketing ultra-high-performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) under uniaxial loaded. The jacket was connected to the column core using shear connectors and (CFRP) fixed as a strip on the tension zone between the column cores and the jacketing. Seven column samples of square cross-section (120 x120) mm at the midsection with overall length of 1250 mm were cast using normal strength concrete (NSC) and having similar longitudinal and transverse reinforcement. The samples were made and tested under axial load at eccentricity equal to 120 mm up to failure. Test parameters were the thickness of jackets (25 and 35) mm and the width of CFRP (0,8, and 12) cm. Column specimens were tested, one of them was reference without any strengthening, and the other specimens divided into two groups (A, and B), and each group included three specimens based on the parameters. Group (A) has UHPFRC jacket thickness 25 mm and CFRP width (0,8, and 12) cm respectively, and group (B) has UHPFRC jacket thickness 35 mm and CFRP width (0,8, and 12) cm respectively. The outcomes of the article show that increasing the thickness of jacket, and width of CFRP lead to increase in the load carrying capacity about (110.5%,168.4%, and 184.2%) for group A, and (157.9%,226.3%, and 263.2%) for group B compared with the reference column due to delay in the appearance of cracks and their distribution. The mid-height lateral displacement of columns was decreased about (66.6%,42.3%, and 35.9%) for group A, and (46.15%,38.46%, and 32.3%) for group B, also the axial deformation of specimens decreased about (71.7%,60.86%, and 55.86%) for group A, and (65.5%,60.5%, and 53.4) for group B compared with the reference column. The ductility of columns that were strengthened with UHPFRC jacket only was increased about (13.67%,19.66%) for thickness(25,35) mm respectively, because of that UHPFRC jacket was contented on steel fibers, and the percentage decrease of ductility was about (5.1%,and 12%) for group (A), (1%,and 9.4%) for group (B) when bonded CFRP in the tension zone with width (8 ,and 12) cm respectively. The results show improvement in the initial and secant stiffness when, increased the thickness of jacket, and width of CFRP because of increase in the size of columns and improvement in the modulus of elasticity. The toughness increase was about (273.97%,301.55%, and 304.5%) for group A, and (453.69%,511.93%, and 524.28%) for group B compared with the reference column because of increase in the size of specimens and delay the appearance of cracks

12. Biostratigraphy of Yamama Formation in Faihaa Oil Field, Southern Iraq

Abstract

The Yamama Formation was studied in three wells (Fh-1, Fh-2, and Fh-3) within Faihaa oil field, south Iraq. Thin sections were studied by using the polarizing microscope examination in order to determine microfossils and biozone. Thirty-five species of benthic foraminifera were recognized, including four index species. In addition, twelve species of calcareous green algae were recognized, including two index species. Other fossils that were recognized in Yamama Formation include Gastropoda, Bryozoa, Coral, Rudist, and Pelecypoda. Six biozones were observed, which are Charentia cuvillieri sp. (Range Zone of Berriasian age), Psudochryalidina infracretacea sp. (Range Zone of Berriasian age), Pseudocyclammina Lituus sp. (Range Zone of Valanginian age), Nezzazata Perforate sp.andChoffatella sp.(Assemblage Zoneof Berriasian-Valanginian age), Desycladales Green Algae- Cylindroporella sp. (Range Zone of Early Cretaceous- Berriasian age), and Desycladales Green Algae- Salpingoporella cf. circassa sp. (Range Zone of Valanginian age). According to these biozones, the age of Yamama Formation was distinguished to be the Berriasian-Valanginian.

Anthraquinones are a major class of compounds naturally occurring in Asphodelus microcarpus. The pharmacological actions of anthraquinones in cancer cells are known to induce apoptosis or autophagy, and revert multidrug resistance. In this study, five anthraquinone-type analogs were isolated from the methanol extract of A. microcarpus leaves and identified as, emodin, rhein, physcion, aloe-emodin, and emodic acid. Among them, aloe-emodin and emodic-acid strongly inhibited the proliferation, cells-intrinsic NF-κB activity and metastatic ability of breast cancer. Although aloe-emodin inhibited p38 and ERK phosphorylation, emodic-acid more markedly inhibited JNK, in addition to p38 and ERK phosphorylation. Both aloe-emodin and emodic-acid inhibited the secretion of the pro-tumorigenic cytokines IL-1β and IL-6, and VEGF and MMP expression, and subsequently inhibited the invasive and migratory potential of 4T1 cells. Thus, our study demonstrated the effects of aloe-emodin and emodin-acid in controlling the migratory and invasive ability of 4T1 breast cancer cells, in addition to inhibiting NF-κB activity and the expression of its downstream target molecules.

Abstract

Background & Aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease. Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals). Results: Single-marker association analyses found approximately 100 loci displaying P < 5 × 10–4, with the most significant being a signal within the OTUD5 gene (rs3027490; P = 4.80 × 10–6; odds ratio [OR], 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.028–1.88; Japanese cohort). Although the transethnic meta-analysis evidenced only a suggestive signal (rs2239452, mapping within the PIM2 gene; OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09–1.26; P = 9.93 × 10–8), the population-specific meta-analysis showed a genome-wide significant locus in East Asian individuals pointing to the same region (rs7059064, mapping within the GRIPAP1 gene; P = 6.2 × 10–9; OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.21–1.46). Indeed, rs7059064 tags a unique linkage disequilibrium block including 7 genes: TIMM17B, PQBP1, PIM2, SLC35A2, OTUD5, KCND1, and GRIPAP1, as well as a superenhancer (GH0XJ048933 within OTUD5) targeting all these genes. GH0XJ048933 is also predicted to target FOXP3, the main T-regulatory cell lineage specification factor. Consistently, OTUD5 and FOXP3 RNA levels were up-regulated in PBC case patients (1.75- and 1.64-fold, respectively). Conclusions: This work represents the first comprehensive study, to our knowledge, of the chrX contribution to the genetics of an autoimmune liver disease and shows a novel PBC-related genome-wide significant locus.

Abstract

The Late Maastrichtian–Danian phosphatic succession prevails as a deposit to the west of Rutbah region, Western Iraq. This is manifested through the lithostratigraphic sections of boreholes (K.H5\6 and K.H 5\8) drilled previously in the area. The succession is mainly composed of phosphate, shale, porcelanite, oyster and foraminiferal carbonate lithofacies belonging to Digma and Akashat formations. Three facies associations are distinguished during the study: the phosclast planktonic (FA1) that dominates the outer ramp, the phosclast foraminiferal (FA2) that dominates the mid ramp, and the quartz dolomitic phosclast (FA3) present in the inner ramp. These facies’ associations are differentiated into seventeen microfacies types. Microfacies analysis and fauna contents have shown gradual facies variation grading from a high energy inner ramp environment in the east to a low energy deep water ramp environment in the west.

Abstract

The core interval at the K.H5\6 and K.H5\8 wells in the west of Rutba province reveals a significant succession across the Late Cretaceous-Early Paleocene transition. The sampled interval encompasses a series of carbonates belong to Digma Formation of Latest Cretaceous age, which underlies the Akashat Formation of Danian age. Fifty-five species belong to thirty-five genera were recognized. Based on the distribution of these species, eight biozones were distinguished, three biozones are recorded from the K.H 5\6 studied section and two biozones are documented from the K.H 5\8 studied section which refers to Late Maastrichtian age of Digma Formation. Five biozones are recorded from Akashat Formation in the K.H 5\6 studied section and only one biozone is documented from the K.H 5\8 studied section which refers to Danian age. The depositional environment of the studied successions proposed it accumulated in the outer ramp environments.

Abstract

Different chromatographic methods including reversed-phase HPLC led to the isolation and purification of three O-methylated flavonoids, 5,4’-dihydroxy-3,6,7-tri-O-methyl flavone (penduletin) (1), 5,3’-dihydroxy-3,6,7,4’,5’-penta-O-methyl flavone (2), and 5-hydroxy-3,6,7,3’,4’,5’-hexa-O-methyl flavone (3) from Rhamnus disperma roots. Additionlly, four flavonoid glycosides, kampferol 7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (4), isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), quercetin 7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (6), and kampferol 3, 7-di-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (7) along with benzyl-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (8) were successfully isolated. Complete structure characterization of these compounds was assigned based on NMR spectroscopic data, MS analyses, and comparison with the literature. The O-methyl protons and carbons of the three O-methylated flavonoids (1–3) were unambiguously assigned based on 2D NMR data. The occurrence of compounds 1, 4, 5, and 8 in Rhamnus disperma is was reported here for the first time. Compound 3 was acetylated at 5-OH position to give 5-O-acetyl-3,6,7,3’,4’,5’-hexa-O-methyl flavone (9). Compound 1 exhibited the highest cytotoxic activity against MCF 7, A2780, and HT29 cancer cell lines with IC50 values at 2.17 µM, 0.53 µM, and 2.16 µM, respectively, and was 2–9 folds more selective against tested cancer cell lines compared to the normal human fetal lung fibroblasts (MRC5). It also doubled MCF 7 apoptotic populations and caused G1 cell cycle arrest. The acetylated compound 9 exhibited cytotoxic activity against MCF 7 and HT29 cancer cell lines with IC50 values at 2.19 µM and 3.18 µM, respectively, and was 6–8 folds more cytotoxic to tested cancer cell lines compared to the MRC5 cells.

Abstract

Ever since their introduction, personal computers have been used as a tool for education. An Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is one such tool that can provide automated feedback to students when solving problems. This paper discusses the design and implementation of an ITS to aid instructors of microelectronic circuits, a topic often taught to undergraduate electrical and computer engineering students. The proposed ITS allows an instructor to create and add problems related to metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) transistors, and to simulate the underlying circuits using the commonly available LTspice tool. Students are then able to load that problem and enter equations to solve it, while the ITS provides immediate feedback and hints, as applicable. Currently, the proposed ITS can handle MOS transistors at DC, including Ids equations for triode and saturation regions of operation. The intent is to extend the capabilities of the proposed ITS to handle different circuit elements such as diodes and bipolar transistors, and to facilitate open-ended design problems.

Abstract

Anthraquinones are a major class of compounds naturally occurring in Asphodelus microcarpus. The pharmacological actions of anthraquinones in cancer cells are known to induce apoptosis or autophagy, and revert multidrug resistance. In this study, five anthraquinone-type analogs were isolated from the methanol extract of A. microcarpus leaves and identified as, emodin, rhein, physcion, aloe-emodin, and emodic acid. Among them, aloe-emodin and emodic-acid strongly inhibited the proliferation, cells-intrinsic NF-κB activity and metastatic ability of breast cancer. Although aloe-emodin inhibited p38 and ERK phosphorylation, emodic-acid more markedly inhibited JNK, in addition to p38 and ERK phosphorylation. Both aloe-emodin and emodic-acid inhibited the secretion of the pro-tumorigenic cytokines IL-1β and IL-6, and VEGF and MMP expression, and subsequently inhibited the invasive and migratory potential of 4T1 cells. Thus, our study demonstrated the effects of aloe-emodin and emodin-acid in controlling the migratory and invasive ability of 4T1 breast cancer cells, in addition to inhibiting NF-κB activity and the expression of its downstream target molecules.

Abstract

Background & Aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease. Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals). Results: Single-marker association analyses found approximately 100 loci displaying P < 5 × 10–4, with the most significant being a signal within the OTUD5 gene (rs3027490; P = 4.80 × 10–6; odds ratio [OR], 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.028–1.88; Japanese cohort). Although the transethnic meta-analysis evidenced only a suggestive signal (rs2239452, mapping within the PIM2 gene; OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09–1.26; P = 9.93 × 10–8), the population-specific meta-analysis showed a genome-wide significant locus in East Asian individuals pointing to the same region (rs7059064, mapping within the GRIPAP1 gene; P = 6.2 × 10–9; OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.21–1.46). Indeed, rs7059064 tags a unique linkage disequilibrium block including 7 genes: TIMM17B, PQBP1, PIM2, SLC35A2, OTUD5, KCND1, and GRIPAP1, as well as a superenhancer (GH0XJ048933 within OTUD5) targeting all these genes. GH0XJ048933 is also predicted to target FOXP3, the main T-regulatory cell lineage specification factor. Consistently, OTUD5 and FOXP3 RNA levels were up-regulated in PBC case patients (1.75- and 1.64-fold, respectively). Conclusions: This work represents the first comprehensive study, to our knowledge, of the chrX contribution to the genetics of an autoimmune liver disease and shows a novel PBC-related genome-wide significant locus.

The Mishrif Formation represents a carbonate succession that deposited in major parts of the Arabian Plate during the Cenomanian stage. The formation is rich in fossils including foraminifera, rudists, and algae. This study includes determination of the biozones and biostratigraphic limits of three boreholes sections of Mishrif Formation (Cenomanian) from Majnoon and Zubair oil fields in southern Iraq within the Mesopotamian Basin. A new biostratigraphic scheme is introduced based on the study of benthic foraminifera that occur in the complete succession of Mishrif Formation. Depending on the vertical distribution of benthic foraminifera, four biozones in the studied sections have been established, they include: 1 - Miliolids Abundance Biozone that is characterized by the first appearance of miliolids to first appearance of Nezzazata conica, and include rudist, gastropoda, pelecypoda and algae, 2 - Nezzazata simplex - Nezzazata conica Concurrent Biozone (Middle Cenomanian) is distinguished by the first appearance of Nezzazata simplex, Nezzazata conica, Praealveolina cretacea, and Pseudorhapydionia laurinensis. Other associated benthic foraminifera include Nezzazata concave, Praealveolina tenuis, Chrysalidina sp., Cuneolina pavonia, Multispirina iranica, Biconcava bentori, Qataria dukhani, Dicyclina schlumbergari, Tabrina beingstani, Cisalveolina sp., and Carinoconus iraqiensis. 3 - Pseudorhapydionian laurinensis - Praealveolina cretacea Concurrent Biozone (Early Late Cenomanian) is identified by the last occurrence of Nezzazata simplex with the first occurrence of Psudorhapydionian laurinensis, and Praealveoilina cretacea, and the last occurrence of both taxa. This biozone also shows the occurrence of Cisalveolina fallax, Tabarian bingstani, Carinoconus iraqiensis, Spiroloculina sp., Chrysalidina gradata, Biconcava bentori, Qataria dukhani, Pseudotexularella sp., and Dicyclina schlumbergari. 4 - Pseudolituonella reicheli-Chrysalidina gradata Concurrent Biozone (Latest Cenomanian) is marked by the first and last occurrence of Pseudolituonella reicheli and Chrysalidina gradate. Other diagnosed foraminifera include: Spiroloculina sp., Rotalia sp., Pseudorhapydionia sp., Quinquelaculina sp., Nummulculina heimi, and Discorbis sp. Based on the stratigraphic ranges of the available fossils of the studied sections, the age of Mishrif Formation is estimated to be of Middle-latest Cenomanian. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction Although risk factors linked to diabetic retinopathy (DR) among patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been extensively studied globally, the specific determinants of these factors in relation to DR in Palestine are presently not well understood. Methods This retrospective cross‐sectional study included patients who underwent DR screening with a fundus camera (VersaCam a). The study included patients aged ≥18 with T2DM, excluding those with other types of diabetes or a history of malignancies. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with DR. Results A total of 1163 patients with T2DM were included in this study. Of these, 211 (18.1%) patients were classified in the DR group, 761 (65.4%) in the no DR group and 191 (16.4%) were ungradable. Among the included patients, 434 (37.3%) were male. A secondary level of education or higher and a BMI ≥30 kg/m2, compared with 7%, be physically inactive and use insulin, with ORs of 1.63 (p = 0.02), 2.05 (p 7%, physical inactivity and insulin use were all independently associated with the presence of DR. Furthermore, a secondary or higher educational level and obesity demonstrated independent and inverse associations with the development of DR.
