Abstract

The Advanced Molybdenum-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE) searches for neutrino-less double-beta (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) decay of 100Mo in enriched molybdate crystals. The AMoRE crystals must have low levels of radioactive contamination to achieve low background signals with energies near the Q-value of the 100Mo 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} decay. To produce low-activity crystals, radioactive contaminants in the raw materials used to form the crystals must be controlled and quantified. 100EnrMoO3 powder, which is enriched in the 100Mo isotope, is of particular interest as it is the source of 100Mo in the crystals. A high-purity germanium detector having 100% relative efficiency, named CC1, is being operated in the Yangyang underground laboratory. Using CC1, we collected a gamma spectrum from a 1.6-kg 100EnrMoO3 powder sample enriched to 96.4% in 100Mo. Activities were analyzed for the isotopes 228Ac, 228Th, 226Ra, and 40K. They are long-lived naturally occurring isotopes that can produce background signals in the region of interest for AMoRE. Activities of both 228Ac and 228Th were < 1.0 mBq/kg at 90% confidence level (C.L.). The activity of 226Ra was measured to be 5.1 \pm 0.4 (stat) \pm 2.2 (syst) mBq/kg. Abstract

The axion, a consequence of the PQ mechanism, has been considered as the most elegant solution to the strong-CP problem and a compelling candidate for cold dark matter. The Center for Axion and Precision Physics Research (CAPP) of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was established on 16 October 2013 with a main objective to launch state of the art axion experiments in South Korea. Relying on the haloscope technique, our strategy is to run several experiments in parallel to explore a wide range of axion masses with sensitivities better than the QCD axion models. We utilize not only the advanced technologies, such as high-field large-volume superconducting (SC) magnets, ultra low temperature dilution refrigerators, and nearly quantum-limited noise amplifiers, but also some unique features solely developed at the Center, including high-quality SC resonant cavities surviving high magnetic fields and efficient cavity geometries to reach high-frequency regions. Our goal is to probe axion dark matter in the frequency range of 1-10 GHz in the first phase and then ultimately up to 25 GHz, even in a scenario where axions constitute only 10% of the local dark matter halo. Abstract

The largest multi-gene family in metazoans is the family of olfactory receptor (OR) genes. Human ORs are organized in clusters over most chromosomes and seem to include >0.1% the human genome. Because 369 out of 856 OR genes are mapped on chromosome 11 (HSA11), we sought to determine whether they mediate structural rearrangements involving this chromosome. To this aim, we analyzed 220 specimens collected during diagnostic procedures involving structural rearrangements of chromosome 11. A total of 222 chromosomal abnormalities were included, consisting of inversions, deletions, translocations, duplications, and one insertion, detected by conventional chromosome analysis and/or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and array comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH). We verified by bioinformatics and statistical approaches the occurrence of breakpoints in cytobands with or without OR genes. We found that OR genes are not involved in chromosome 11 reciprocal translocations, suggesting that different DNA motifs and mechanisms based on homology or non-homology recombination can cause chromosome 11 structural alterations. We also considered the proximity between the chromosomal territories of chromosome 11 and its partner chromosomes involved in the translocations by using the deposited Hi-C data concerning the possible occurrence of chromosome interactions. Interestingly, most of the breakpoints are located in regions highly involved in chromosome interactions. Further studies should be carried out to confirm the potential role of chromosome territories’ proximity in promoting genome structural variation, so fundamental in our understanding of the molecular basis of medical genetics and evolutionary genetics.

Abstract

When an increased nuchal translucency (>3.00 mm) is observed during the echographic examination of a foetus in the first trimester of pregnancy, an increased risk of chromosomopathy is considered, and the pregnant woman is offered the possibility of an invasive investigation. Here, we focused our attention on prenatal diagnosis issues in cases of foetuses with cytogenetically balanced reciprocal translocations. We report the finding of a cytogenetically balanced, de facto genomically unbalanced translocation that poses a challenge in a case of prenatal diagnosis, changing the risk of Down syndrome in a Zellweger syndromic spectrum risk (PEX3 deletion). At term, a healthy baby was born. This case teaches that prenatal diagnosis in cases of foetuses at increased risk of chromosomal abnormality imperatively requires molecular investigation in addition to a morphological karyotype. Abstract

After the earthquake and the tsunami occurred in Japan on 11th March 2011, four of the Fukushima reactors had released in air a large amount of radioactive isotopes that had been diffused all over the world. The presence of airborne 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs in air particulate due to this accident has been detected and measured in the Low Radioactivity Laboratory operating in the Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of Milano-Bicocca. The sensitivity of the detecting apparatus is of 0.2 \mu Bq/m3 of air. Concentration and time distribution of these radionuclides were determined and some correlations with the original reactor releases were found. Radioactive contaminations ranging from a few to 400 \mu Bq/m3 for the 131I and of a few tens of \mu Bq/m3 for the 137Cs and 134Cs have been detected, Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

INTRODUZIONE: Il bagno è una delle attività più intime durante le quali le persone affette da demenza vengono assistite. La letteratura suggerisce che il 20-40% dei pazienti con deterioramento cognitivo, ricoverati in strutture a lungo termine, può reagire con comportamenti aggressivi. OBIETTIVI: valutare l'efficacia della tecnica del bagno con asciugamano nel ridurre l'agitazione, l'aggressività e il disagio dei pazienti con demenza ricoverati in casa di cura. MATERIALI E METODI: È stato condotto uno studio crossover intenzionale; è stato arruolato un campione di pazienti con demenza. I comportamenti aggressivi sono stati valutati utilizzando la versione italiana del Care Recipient Behavior Assessment (CAREBA- ita). RISULTATI: Sono stati arruolati 71 residenti. La tecnica del bagno con l'asciugamano ha mostrato una riduzione degli episodi di aggressività e del tempo di esecuzione della procedura con una differenza statisticamente significativa (p < 0,05). CONCLUSIONI: La tecnica Towel bath fornisce una valida alternativa al bagno tradizionale per ridurre l'aggressività nei pazienti con demenza., BACKGROUND: Bathing is one of the most intimate activities during which persons with dementia are cared for. The literature suggests that 20-40% of patients with cognitive impairment, hospitalized in long-term facilities, may react with aggressive behaviours. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of the towel bath technique in reducing agitation, aggression, and discomfort in nursing home residents with dementia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An Inteentional crossover study was conducted; a convenience sample of patients with dementia, was enrolled. Aggressive behaviors were evaluated using the italian version of the Care Recipient Behavior Assessment (CAREBA- ita). RESULTS: 71 resident were enrolled. Towel Bath technique showed a reduction in episodes of aggression and in the execution time of the procedure with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The technique Towel bath provides a viable alternative to traditional bath to reduce aggression in patients with dementia.

Abstract

CO2 reduction in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOECs) is a key-technology for the transition to a sustainable energy infrastructure and chemical industry. Ceria (CeO2) holds great promise in developing highly efficient, cost-effective and durable fuel electrodes, due to its promising electrocatalytic properties, and proven ability to suppress carbon deposition and to tolerate high concentrations of impurities. In the present work, we investigate the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of ceria towards CO2 reduction by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on model systems with well-defined geometry, composition and surface area. Aiming at the optimization of the intrinsic catalytic properties of the material, we systematically study the effect of different dopants (Zr, Gd, Pr and Bi) on the reaction rate under varying operating conditions (temperature, gas composition and applied polarization) relevant for SOECs. The electrochemical measurements reveal the dominant role of the surface defect chemistry of the material in the reaction rate, with doping having only a mild effect on the rate and activation energy of the reaction. By analyzing the pO2 and overpotential dependence of the reaction rate with a general micro-kinetic model, we are able to identify the second electron transfer as the rate limiting step of the process, highlighting the dominant role of surface polarons in the energy landscape. These insights on the correlation between the surface defects and the electrocatalytic activity of ceria open new directions for the development of highly performing ceria-based technological electrodes. Abstract

The catastrophic effect of anthropogenic CO2 emissions on climate presents us with one of the biggest challenges of our era, i.e. the defossilization of the energy infrastructure and the chemical industry. Electrolysis and co-electrolysis of water/steam and carbon dioxide in high temperature (600 – 900 °C) solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) are considered a cornerstone for the sustainable energy system of the future. They enable an efficient conversion of electrical energy from (intermittent) renewable sources and a sustainable production of fuels and chemicals, which may be long-term stored. In particular for CO2 electrolysis, electrochemical CO2 reduction in SOECs is now on the verge of commercialization and is expected to reach industrial-scale within the next decade. In this context, ceria (CeO2) has drawn significant attention as a promising electrocatalyst for the cathode side. On the pathway towards the implementation of ceria into technological electrodes on a large scale, the optimization of its intrinsic electrocatalytic activity is crucial and requires an in-depth atomistic understanding of the reaction mechanism. The aim of this work is to investigate how appropriate tuning of ceria surfaces affects its electrochemical activity towards CO2 reduction, through a systematic study of the levers that can promote the reaction rate. The electrochemical properties of ceria are analyzed by employing model electrodes produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in the form of thin films. The possibility offered by PLD to unambiguously define the geometry and surface area of the model system is highly convenient for fundamental studies, as it enables an accurate interpretation of the critical phenomena at play in the electrochemical reaction. In this thesis, the discussion on the effect of ceria surface modification on its electrochemical properties develops in two parts. In the first part, the correlation between the introduction of dopants in the ceria lattice and its electrochemical performance is examined. The doped and undoped surfaces of ceria are shown to have the same dependence of the reaction rate on the equivalent oxygen partial pressure at the working electrode, revealing a mild sensitivity of the electrode performance on doping. In the second part, the termination of the ceria surface is engineered in order to probe its role in enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of ceria. The trend of activities observed for the different surface orientations unveils a strong correlation with the adsorption energy of the CO2 molecule, and highlights the similarities between the electrocatalytic behavior of ceria towards CO2 reduction and H2O splitting. Through the second part of the dissertation, a number of limitations of the chosen current collection approach, i.e. Pt grids patterned through lift-off photolithography, emerge. Metal patterns are typically the current collector of choice for thin film studies employing electrocatalyst layers with limited electronic conductivity, as the one in this work. However, the placement of this type of current collector can heavily influence the analysis of the electrochemical performance, by introducing uncertainties and misinterpretation of the data obtained from the electrochemical measurements. Consequently, a third part of the thesis is devoted to the development of an alternative current collection strategy, consisting of an epitaxially grown mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) oxide layer underlying the ceria film. Two materials are identified as promising candidates, namely the perovskite materials Nb-doped strontium titanate (STN) and strontium vanadate (SVO), whose feasibility as oxidic current collectors for thin film studies on the electrocatalytic activity of ceria towards CO2 reduction and H2O splitting is assessed.
