Abstract

The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly-developed Python packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy Project is the core package $\texttt{astropy}$, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we summarize key features in the core package as of the recent major release, version 5.0, and provide major updates for the Project. We then discuss supporting a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages, including connections with several astronomical observatories and missions. We also revisit the future outlook of the Astropy Project and the current status of Learn Astropy. We conclude by raising and discussing the current and future challenges facing the Project., Comment: 43 pages, 5 figures. To appear in ApJ. Abstract

We present a neural rendering framework for simultaneous view synthesis and appearance editing of a scene from multi-view images captured under known environment illumination. Existing approaches either achieve view synthesis alone or view synthesis along with relighting, without direct control over the scene's appearance. Our approach explicitly disentangles the appearance and learns a lighting representation that is independent of it. Specifically, we independently estimate the BRDF and use it to learn a lighting-only representation of the scene. Such disentanglement allows our approach to generalize to arbitrary changes in appearance while performing view synthesis. We show results of editing the appearance of a real scene, demonstrating that our approach produces plausible appearance editing. The performance of our view synthesis approach is demonstrated to be at par with state-of-the-art approaches on both real and synthetic data.

Abstract

An image captured with a wide-aperture camera exhibits a finite depth-of-field, with focused and defocused pixels. A compact and robust representation of focus and defocus helps analyze and manipulate such images. In this work, we study the fine characteristics of images with a shallow depth-of-field in the context of focal stacks. We present a composite measure for focus that is a combination of existing measures. We identify in-focus pixels, dual-focus pixels, pixels that exhibit bokeh and spatially-varying blur kernels between focal slices. We use these to build a novel representation that facilitates easy manipulation of focal stacks. We present a comprehensive algorithm for post-capture refocusing in a geometrically correct manner. Our approach can refocus the scene at high fidelity while preserving fine aspects of focus and defocus blur.

4. A Flexible Neural Renderer for Material Visualization

Abstract

Photo realism in computer generated imagery is crucially dependent on how well an artist is able to recreate real-world materials in the scene. The workflow for material modeling and editing typically involves manual tweaking of material parameters and uses a standard path tracing engine for visual feedback. A lot of time may be spent in iterative selection and rendering of materials at an appropriate quality. In this work, we propose a convolutional neural network based workflow which quickly generates high-quality ray traced material visualizations on a shaderball. Our novel architecture allows for control over environment lighting and assists material selection along with the ability to render spatially-varying materials. Additionally, our network enables control over environment lighting which gives an artist more freedom and provides better visualization of the rendered material. Comparison with state-of-the-art denoising and neural rendering techniques suggests that our neural renderer performs faster and better. We provide a interactive visualization tool and release our training dataset to foster further research in this area., Comment: 10 pages

Abstract

Parallel computing using accelerators has gained widespread research attention in the past few years. In particular, using GPUs for general purpose computing has brought forth several success stories with respect to time taken, cost, power, and other metrics. However, accelerator based computing has signifi- cantly relegated the role of CPUs in computation. As CPUs evolve and also offer matching computational resources, it is important to also include CPUs in the computation. We call this the hybrid computing model. Indeed, most computer systems of the present age offer a degree of heterogeneity and therefore such a model is quite natural. We reevaluate the claim of a recent paper by Lee et al.(ISCA 2010). We argue that the right question arising out of Lee et al. (ISCA 2010) should be how to use a CPU+GPU platform efficiently, instead of whether one should use a CPU or a GPU exclusively. To this end, we experiment with a set of 13 diverse workloads ranging from databases, image processing, sparse matrix kernels, and graphs. We experiment with two different hybrid platforms: one consisting of a 6-core Intel i7-980X CPU and an NVidia Tesla T10 GPU, and another consisting of an Intel E7400 dual core CPU with an NVidia GT520 GPU. On both these platforms, we show that hybrid solutions offer good advantage over CPU or GPU alone solutions. On both these platforms, we also show that our solutions are 90% resource efficient on average. Our work therefore suggests that hybrid computing can offer tremendous advantages at not only research-scale platforms but also the more realistic scale systems with significant performance gains and resource efficiency to the large scale user community., Comment: 20 pages

Abstract

The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly developed Python packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy Project is the core package astropy, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we provide an overview of the organization of the Astropy project and summarize key features in the core package, as of the recent major release, version 2.0. We then describe the project infrastructure designed to facilitate and support development for a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages. We conclude with a future outlook of planned new features and directions for the broader Astropy Project.© 2018. 11. Activation of CDC25A phosphatase is limited by CDK2/cyclin A-mediated feedback inhibition

Abstract

ABSTRACTCyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 1 complexed with cyclin B is a driver of mitosis, while CDK2 drives S phase entry and replicon initiation. CDK2 activity increases as cells progress through S phase, and its cyclin partner switches from cyclin E to cyclin A. Activation of CDK2 requires dephosphorylation of tyrosine-15 by CDC25A. DNA damage activates the checkpoint protein CHK1, which phosphorylates and degrades CDC25A to prevent activation of CDK2 and protect from cell cycle progression before damage is repaired. CHK1 inhibitors were developed to circumvent this arrest and enhance the efficacy of many cancer chemotherapeutic agents. CHK1 inhibition results in the accumulation of CDC25A and activation of CDK2. We demonstrate that inhibition of CDK2 or suppression of cyclin A also results in accumulation of CDC25A suggesting a feedback loop that prevents over activation of this pathway. The feedback inhibition of CDC25A targets phosphorylation of S88-CDC25A, which resides within a CDK consensus sequence. In contrast, it appears that CDK complexes with cyclin B (and possibly cyclin E) stabilize CDC25A in a feed-forward activation loop. While CDK2/cyclin A would normally be active at late S/G2, we propose that this feedback inhibitory loop prevents over activation of CDK2 in early S phase, while still leaving CDK2/cyclin E to catalyze replicon initiation. One importance of this observation is that a subset of cancer cell lines are very sensitive to CHK1 inhibition, which is mediated by CDK2/cyclin A activity in S phase cells. Hence, dysregulation of this feedback loop might facilitate sensitivity of the cells.

12. Critical reanalysis of the methods that discriminate the activity of CDK2 from CDK1

Abstract

ABSTRACTCyclin dependent kinases 1 and 2 (CDK1 and CDK2) play crucial roles in regulating cell cycle progression from G1 to S, through S, and G2 to M phase. Both inhibition and aberrant activation of CDK1/2 can be detrimental to cancer cell growth. However, the tools routinely employed to discriminate between the activities of these 2 kinases do not have the selectivity commonly attributed to them. Activation of these kinases is often assayed as a decrease of the inhibitory tyrosine-15 phosphorylation, yet the antibodies used cannot discriminate between phosphorylated CDK1 and CDK2. Inhibitors of these kinases, while partially selective against purified kinases, may lack selectivity when applied to intact cells. High levels of cyclin E are often considered a marker of increased CDK2 activity, yet active CDK2 targets cyclin E for degradation, hence high levels usually reflect inactive CDK2. Finally, inhibition of CDK2 does not arrest cells in S phase suggesting CDK2 is not required for S phase progression. Furthermore, activation of CDK2 in S phase can rapidly induce DNA double-strand breaks in some cell lines. The misunderstandings associated with the use of these tools has led to misinterpretation of results. In this review, we highlight these challenges in the field.
