Aegean extension began during Eocene-Oligocene times and led to the thinning of the upper plate into a retreating slab system. The style of extension during the Miocene remains controversial, with a majority of studies arguing for extension accommodated by low-angle extensional brittle-ductile faults, called detachments. In other hands, the present-day active seismic faults in the Aegean Sea are only high-angle normal faults and dextral strike-slips. We aim to constrain and date the style of faulting in central Greece by combining analysis of 19 offshore seismic lines with onshore structural observations on Syros Island and LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of calcite sampled in two major fault zones of Syros (Palos and Fabrika faults). Three main sets of faults have been identified in the Central Cyclades: NW-SE trending normal faults, NNW-SSE oblique (sinistral)-normal faults, and NNE-SSW trending dextral strike-slip faults. High-angle normal faults define regularly spaced horsts and grabens, suggesting a wide rifting-type of extension. Dextral strike-slip faults occur at Syros, mainly offshore, and are kinematically compatible with normal faults. U-Pb dating of calcite crystallizing in normal fault planes at Syros yields ages at c.a. 10 Ma for high-angle normal faults activity. On these bases, we propose that wide rifting with high-angle normal faults accommodated Aegean extension when trench retreat accelerated in the middle to late Miocene. At this time, dextral strike-slip faults formed as a response of the onset of Anatolia lateral extrusion.

The value of deep‐water sedimentary successions as reliable records of environmental change has been questioned due to their long response times and sediment pathways leading to complex responses to climatic change and tectonic signals over differing timescales. We studied the Gulf of Corinth, Greece, to test the value of deep‐water stratigraphic successions as records of external controls on sediment flux in a setting with short response times and transport distances. The confinement of the rift basin allows for a near‐complete accounting of clastic sediment volumes. The recent acquisition of high‐resolution seismic reflection data, utilisation of International Ocean Discovery Programme Expedition 381 cores and a robust chronological framework, enable evaluation of the stratigraphy at a high temporal resolution. Combining borehole and high‐resolution seismic reflection data, distinct seismic units can be correlated to multiple paleoenvironmental proxies, permitting quantification of sediment flux variation across successive glacial–interglacial cycles at ca. 10 kyr temporal resolution. Trends in average sediment flux since ca. 242 ka show ca. 2–9 times greater sediment flux in cooler glacials compared to warmer interglacial conditions. The Holocene is an exception to low sediment flux for the interglacials, with ca. 5 times higher rates than previous interglacials. The short and steep configuration of the Sythas canyon and its fan at the base of an active submarine normal fault results in deep‐sea deposition at all sea‐level stands. In contrast, adjacent canyon systems shut down during warm intervals. When combined with palynology, results show that periods of distinct vegetation re‐organisation correlate to sediment flux changes. The temporal correlation of sediment flux to palynology in the Gulf of Corinth over the last ca. 242 kyr is evidence that variability of sediment supply is largely governed by climate‐related changes in hinterland catchments, with sea‐level and tectonics being second‐order controls on sediment flux variability. Sets of marine terraces, sediments, and paleoshorelines are commonly found in forearc regions worldwide. A common assumption holds that crustal uplift prevents these features from littoral erosion. Here, we study the vertical deformation of Karpathos, a forearc island in the eastern Mediterranean, whose long axis extends at a high angle to the strike of the Hellenic Subduction System (HSS). We target three key coastal localities along the island to discuss spatial and temporal variability of vertical motion. We mapped sets of up to 19 marine terraces per locality, with elevations ranging from 1.5 to ∼350 masl. Ages for terraces and sediments are constrained by radiocarbon (<31 masl) and Sr‐isotope (2–310 masl) dating, and range from 2.4 ka to ∼4.3 Ma. Data analysis shows that average uplift rates are up to two orders of magnitude faster over shorter (⪅100 ka) than longer (⪆100 ka) timescales, in agreement with other local and global data sets. Further, we find evidence for multiple marine reoccupations of late Pleistocene terraces, indicating that carbonate beachrock is often resistant to multiple interactions with sea‐level. Neogene marine sequences that witness longer periods (∼4 Ma) show signs of alternating vertical motion. Using this novel data set, we explore the effects of various mechanisms (i.e., upper‐plate normal faulting, splay‐thrust faulting, basal underplating) on the spatial and temporal patterns of vertical deformation. Although the contribution of each mechanism to the net vertical deformation cannot be isolated with certainty, our results show that none alone could account for the observations. Plain Language Summary: In this study, we focus on understanding how the landmass of Karpathos Island, in the Hellenic Subduction System in the Mediterranean Sea, moved vertically over time. We focus mainly on marine terraces, which are wave‐cut platforms near the sea forming staircase‐like topography. The age of these platforms has been constrained by dating fossil shells, shell fragments, and soils that mantle the terraces: for young (closer to the sea‐level) markers we used the isotope Carbon‐14, while for older terraces (further inland) Strontium‐87. We found that the island of Karpathos subsided prior to ∼4.3 Ma, but since then it experiences uplift. From our analysis, we find that the vertical motion of the island is the result of, at least, three interrelated processes: (a) sediment underplating, that scrapes sediments from the down‐going plate during subduction and attaches them to the base of the upper plate, pushing it upwards; (b) large earthquakes that occur either at the interface of two converging plates or on large faults that splay from this interface; and (c) smaller earthquakes produced by the horizontal stretching of the Aegean crust. The accurate mapping of seafloor substrate types plays a major role in understanding the distribution of benthic marine communities and planning a sustainable exploitation of marine resources. Traditionally, this activity has relied on the efforts of marine geology experts, who accomplish it manually by examining information from acoustic data along with the available ground- truth samples. However, this approach is challenging and time-consuming. Hence, it is important to explore automatic methods to replace this manual process. In this study, we investigated the potential of deep learning (U-Net) for classifying the seabed as either "bedrock" or "non-bedrock" using bathymetry and/or backscatter data, acquired with multibeam echosounders (MBES). Slope and hillshade data, derived from the bathymetry, were also included in the experiment. Several U-Net models, taking as input either one of these datasets or a combination of them, were trained using an expert delineated map as reference. The analysis revealed that U-Net has the ability to map bedrock and non-bedrock areas reliably. On our test set, the models using either bathymetry or slope data showed the highest performance metrics and the best visual match with the reference map. We also observed that they often identified topographically rough features as bedrock, which were not interpreted as such by the human expert. While such discrepancy would typically be considered an error of the model, the scale of the expert annotations as well as the different methods used by the experts to manually generate maps must be considered when evaluating the predictions quality. While encouraging results were obtained here, further research is necessary to explore the potential of deep learning in mapping other seabed types and evaluating the models' generalization capabilities on similar datasets but different geographical locations. Shimming systems are required to provide sufficient field homogeneity for high resolution NMR. In certain specialized applications, such as rotating-field NMR and portable (ex-situ) NMR, permanent magnet-based shimming systems can provide considerable advantages. We present a simple two-dimensional shimming method based on harmonic corrector rings which can provide arbitrary multipole order shimming corrections. Results demonstrate, for example, that quadrupolar order shimming improves the linewidth by up to and order of magnitude. An additional order of magnitude reduction is in principle achievable by ultilizing this shimming method for z-gradient correction and higher order xy gradients.

High-resolution NMR spectra of materials subject to anisotropic broadening are usually obtained by rotating the sample about the magic angle, which is 54.7 degrees to the static magnetic field. In projected Magic Angle Spinning (p-MAS), the sample is spun about two angles, neither of which is the magic angle. This provides a method of obtaining isotropic spectra while spinning at shallow angles. The p-MAS experiment may be used in situations where spinning the sample at the magic angle is not possible due to geometric or other constraints, allowing the choice of spinning angle to be determined by factors such as the shape of the sample, rather than by the spin physics. The application of this technique to bovine tissue samples is demonstrated as a proof of principle for future biological or medical applications.

High-resolution NMR of samples in the solid state is typically performed under mechanical sample spinning around an axis that makes an angle, called the magic angle, of 54.7 degrees with the static magnetic field. There are many cases in which geometrical and engineering constraints prevent spinning at this specific angle. Implementations of in-situ and ex-situ magic angle field spinning might be extremely demanding because of the power requirements or an inconvenient sample size or geometry. Here we present a methodology based on switched angle spinning between two angles, none of which is the magic angle, which provide both isotropic and anisotropic information. Using this method, named Projected Magic Angle Spinning, we were able to obtain resolved isotropic chemical shifts in spinning samples where the broadening is mostly inhomogeneous.
