7. Wettability Difference Induced Out-of-Plane Unidirectional Droplet Transport for Efficient Fog Harvesting

Abstract

Securing freshwater resources is a global issue for ensuring sustainable development. Fog harvesting is attracting great attention as a method to collect water without any energy input. Previous reports that were inspired by insects and plants have given insights such as the effectiveness of in-plane wettability and structural differences for droplet transport, which might enhance artificial water harvesting efficiency. However, further efforts to transfer droplets while maintaining performance are needed because droplet motion owing to these effects is limited to the in-plane direction. In this study, we report droplet transport between three-dimensional copper wire structures with nanostructured hydrophobic and superhydrophilic features. This mechanism enhanced the fog harvesting capability by more than 20% compared with the cumulative value of individual wires. In addition, the relationship between the droplet height and spacing of wires affected the performance. Our results show the importance of out-of-plane directional droplet transport from the wire surface assisted by differences in wire wettability, which minimizes limiting factors of fog harvesting including clogging and droplet shedding. Furthermore, the proposed arrangement reduces the overall system width compared with that of a two-dimensional arrangement while maintaining the amount of harvested water. These results provide a promising approach to designing large-scale and highly efficient fog harvesters.

Abstract

As the importance of advanced millimeter-wave diagnostics increases, the fabri-cations of high-performance devices and components become essential. This paper describes the development of millimeter-wave planar components, such as antennas using low-loss fluorine substrates. The problems to be solved for the present purpose are the low degree of adhesion between copper foil and fluorine substrate and the ac-curacy of device pattern using conventional fabrication techniques. In order to solve these problems, surface treatment of fluorine films and a fabrication method using Electro-Fine-Forming (EF2) are proposed. The peel adhesion strength between the metal and the fluorine films, and the value of dielectric constant of the fluorine films before and after grafting, are reported. In order to confirm the performance of the treated films, microstrip lines (MSL) are fabricated on the conventional fluorine sub-strates and on the grafted-PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) films. The prototype an-tenna using fluorine substrates with EF2 fabrication technique is also introduced

43. Equilibrium Disorder in Carbamazepine Toxicity

Abstract

Three cases of acute carbamazepine intoxication were evaluated neurotologically and neurologically. Findings included symptoms of equilibrium, gait and speech disorders, drowsiness, gaze nystagmus, depressed optokinetic nystagmus and disturbances of smooth pursuit eye movement. These findings, suggestive of a space-occupying lesion, disappeared after the cessation of the medication. On the basis of the clinical findings it is felt that carbamazepine affects structures within the brain stem and the cerebellum. It is well known that equilibrium disorders caused by anticonvulsant intoxication are due to cerebellar disorders but from our present study it should be noted that they originate not only from cerebellar lesions but also from brain stem lesions.

44. Alcohol and the Oculomotor System

Abstract

— The influence of alcohol on the oculomotor system was observed by means of the caloric eye tracking pattern (CETP) test, the visual suppression test on caloric nystagmus, and the positional nystagmus, eye tracking and gaze nystagmus tests. In Group A (nine cases whose CETP before the intake of alcohol was normal), the influence of alcohol consumption appeared regularly and consistently in the following order: abnormality of CETP ≥ positional alcohol nystagmus ≥ abnormality of the eye tracking pattern ≥ alcohol gaze nystagmus. On the contrary, in Group B (eight cases whose CETP before the consumption of alcohol was already abnormal), with one exception, the regularity noted in Group A was not observed. This phenomenon may be attributable to the presence of latent disorders of the oculomotor system. In both groups, the duration of the caloric nystagmus itself was slightly shortened and its amplitude somewhat suppressed after the consumption of alcohol. The results were confirmed by experiments in which the subjects kept their eyes open in darkness. On the other hand, when the eyes were kept open in light surroundings, the duration and amplitude of the caloric nystagmus were exaggerated in appearance because the mechanism of visual suppression was disturbed by alcohol.

Abstract

Caregivers in Japan experience a high prevalence of low back pain (LBP), with age, sex, individual pain experiences, and central sensitization symptoms potentially influencing its chronic progression. To determine the prevalence of LBP among caregivers, as well as its relation to age and sex, and explore work status, psychological factors, and central sensitization symptoms as contributing factors to chronic LBP (CLBP). A large-scale cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1214 caregivers in 35 geriatric healthcare facilities. The survey assessed LBP and CLBP prevalence, work status, psychological factors, and central sensitization-related symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors influencing CLBP. Among 936 valid respondents, the LBP prevalence was 69.2%. No significant sex differences were found in the prevalence of LBP and CLBP. Old age, higher pain severity, and severe symptoms related to central sensitization increased the risk of CLBP. However, work status and psychological factors did not significantly contribute to CLBP. There is a high prevalence of LBP among caregivers, age and individual pain experience significantly impact CLBP. These findings emphasize the need for therapeutic strategies to manage pain intensity, especially in the acute phase, to prevent the progression to chronicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
